President Bartlet's oratory was really Martin Sheen's (and Aaron Sorkin's) oratory 🙂
Apparently, the way Jed Bartlet flung his coat around himself was because of a shoulder injury Martin Sheen suffered in his youth...

If you enjoyed The West Wing, try The Newsroom, written by Aaron Sorkin a few years after The West Wing it presages the current sorry state of US politics from the point of view of a TV newscaster and his team. Jeff Daniels is excellent in the leading role - a quick UA-cam search will throw up his opening monologue that sets the tone for the show as a whole.

I love The West Wing, I rewatch it every election cycle as a tradition. In some ways it’s a little outdated and pretentious (it’s also borderline fantasy these days) but it makes me nostalgic for a time when politics was more about standing up for beliefs and less about calling people out for owning cats! When being intellectual was lauded and not a liberal agenda. For a time when a President stands…nobody sits.

We are rightly called to find something in our lives worth fighting for, something deeply personal and uncompromising, something that can unite the will of the spirit with the work of the flesh, and when we find that, we will discover fire for the second time.
And then we will be able to help lift up this nation and all its people to that place where the heart is without fear, and the head is held high,
    where knowledge is free,
where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow, domestic walls,
where words come out from the depths of truth, and tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection,
where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sands of dead habit,
where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought, and action into that heaven of freedom, dear Father, let our country awake.
