In my opinion, "Two Cathedrals" stands out as a particularly exceptional episode. Martin Sheen's performance in this episode was truly remarkable and worthy of recognition.
Two cathedrals was the absolute best hour of television ever written. There will never be anything that will have the grace, the heartache and the intense pain that that hour showed.
Just saw Sorkin say, "If you wanna get something past Standards and Practices, use Latin." (he used bad words😁) Also said he wrote that episode backwards - started with Dire Straights music (his fav in H.S.) and worked his way back to the the story and images...
It was the opposite for me. I rewatched the entire series countless times before 2016 but couldn’t since because it was too painful to see contrast between a decent fictional administration and a decent if ideologically different opposition; and the deplorable divide that has grown since Trump.
West Wing is my husband's favorite show of all times, and he introduced me to it. That show made me cry so many times, and this was one of them. Tomorrow, I'm going to watch Joe and Jill, and I'm going to sob like a baby. I will always be grateful for his long service, and most especially of his term as POTUS. People are already forgetting how he helped us through the dark days of the pandemic, and all he's done for us since. But history will never forget. Thank you, President Biden.
No, I believe that most of us know that President Biden was there at the most crucial time and he definitely saved us when we really didn't know how bad it was. He may be stepping down but I believe he'll continue to serve our country in other ways. He's very passionate about a project that he feels will help cancer patients, so he's not done.
I will never forget what President Biden did for us! I get emotional each time I think about how he saved us after his mentally ill predecessor attempted to ruin our democracy!
How refreshing to read a comment section so positive & respectful. I've watched The West Wing at least 3-4 times all the way through. Such a well written & acted show! And I can't help thinking about it at Thanksgiving. The Butterball hotline segment was comedic gold.
I'm on my 4th or 5th run through of the West Wing right now. And boy, seeing Martin Sheen tear up got me pretty good in the feels. It's incredible to hear that he had never seen this footage before, as well as hearing that it was John Spencer's last scene filmed. Thank you Martin, Mary Kate, Stockard Channing, Allison Janney, the rest of the cast, and Aaron Sorkin for such a wonderful and entertaining show! In the darkest moments of the MAGA/Trump years you have been a shining beacon on which I have locked on to guide me to a feeling of hope.
I'm with you, my friend @ApolloCDR . I run it on loop and have these last years. My wife is undoubtedly sick of me referencing episodes, lines, and parallels to real life!
Aaron Sorkin has such a distinctive style, especially with dialogue. Just a masterful story teller. Add to that a stellar cast that could actually play their parts without being over shadowed by the incredible talent of Martin Sheen. That has got to be a serious challenge to put together an ensemble cast that can shine as individuals while supporting the other characters so authentically. There were no "duds" in the cast. The sets were marvelous as well, not to mention the unique and effective camera work. All those walking scenes with long traveling camera shots must have been so challenging.
I live in a country on the other side of the world and have loved the show ever since I watched the full series on dvd. It's still is my favourite show ever.
They got me with that clip of John Spencer and Martin Sheen at the beginning and I cried the whole way through this segment. The West Wing, the characters, their stories, and most importantly, the depiction of government and how it works are all responsible for my love (and sometimes disdain) of American politics. Watching TWW was quite literally a transformative experience for me. I will forever and ever be so grateful for this show and the change it brought to my life. And it wasn't just the characters on the screen. This cast - Martin Sheen, John Spencer, Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, Janel Maloney, Dule Hill, Richard Schiff, Josh Molina, and Mary McCormack - have walked the walk on and off screen, by being very present and vocal about our political circumstances. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, Aaron Sorkin, for this amazing gift!

I'm a Brit, I'm fascinated by US politics. I love the West Wing. I've watched it 4 times now from start to finish. Finishing my latest run about 2 weeks ago.
Only 4? Amateur! 😉😀 7 and still counting! The best TV show ever.I don't think there was a weak portrayal, nor bad actor in the whole programme. UK telly has never come anywhere near it, when it comes to political shows. I think I might have to start on 8 now, this has got my juices flowing another hit of "Bartlett for America"!
@stetomlinson3146 😂 I remember watching it when it was on telly (Ch4 I think?) the first time. I binge watched it the first time during lockdown and will continue to go back to it every year or so.
My 10-year-old son was introduced to politics by The West Wing, and he has voted in every election since he became eligible. What I appreciated about the show, is that although the Bartlett administration was liberal, the show did not automatically depict the opposition as bad. The show promoted characters who had integrity, no matter which side of the aisle.
As a Brit I wished that America could run that way for real. People who were actually trying to do what they thought was best for the country as opposed to themselves or vested interests. The UK currently sorely needs some of that too. But, I have little hope.
Thank you for this interview. I’m in New Zealand and worked in our Parliament for a time, and just loved serving our tiny nation. This show always reminds me of how special and important that is.

The opening scene of the news room should also be used in her campaign. I am not American but every time I watch Will lecture about the spirit of the US, tears coming down my eyes.
Between The West Wing and The Newsroom, Aaron Sorkin quite literally on his OWN changed my entire worldview about politics and what it means and what it means to look at it through different lenses for the better (imo). Pretty sure my personal lense of liberalism is nearly entirely based out of the attitudes of those two shoes looool!!!
Some time ago I purchased the entire series and have watched it several times. I still get inspired and chocked up when I watch the individual West Wing shows. Indeed, the program makes us rediscover hope and possibilities, not so different from the past few weeks.
The lotus grows in thick, deep mud....symbolic of the circumstances under which Kamala grew up. The thicker and deeper the mud, the more beautifully the lotus blooms. Kamala will "bloom" with golden brilliance when she hits that convention stage and officially accepts the Democratic nomination. There won't be a dry eye in the venue. We haven't seen this since 2008.
"Never again." to the human race was a gift of compassion. "Never again." to the Israeli government means study and improve on the previous methods because they weren't sadistic enough. "Never again." to Biden means "never again to humans, not Palestinian animals.". Kamala has the opportunity to be something better and different. Let's fix the judiciary in the US and show that America stands by international humanitarian law as well, including the Leahy Law. Otherwise, we are going to live a world driven by the lowest common denominator of barbarism.
Just started re-watching The West Wing this month Seeing the Harris/Walz speeches reminded me. As a newly widowed mother with three toddlers back in 1999, I missed the show when it first aired due to working long hours on the job and freelancing to support my sons and did not discover it until after I was disabled and tripped over the series in 2010 on Netflix. Have wanted to vote 'Bartlet for President' ever since and the upcoming Presidential election of 2024 feels like the closest I may come in my lifetime.

“What’s next” is something Bartlet says at the end of an episode that indicates that even after all the complexity and high stakes of what they contended with in the episode, the work is never done. That’s why Sheen said “what’s next” at the end of this interview.
My fave instance is in S02E2 - in a flashback, Governor Bartlet explains to Josh, "When I ask 'What's next?' it means I'm ready to move on to other things" - at the end of the episode when Josh wakes up in hospital he whispers to President Bartlet, "What's next?"
I was so lucky and blessed to work with Martin Sheen back in 1983 in the filming of the BBC-NBC mini-series Kennedy. He was the most gracious, kind, encouraging and wonderful man and great, great actor. I was a 20 something actor on the very threshold of my (varied) career in the performing arts. I was in many scenes and in two of them I had dialogue and monologue, one of these was with Martin. I was terribly nervous and excited waiting to shoot the scene. I will never forget him, before the scene he came to me and asked me if I minded if he changed a couple lines. I nearly fainted! Here was the great actor Martin Sheen asking this young neophyte actor if I minded him changing lines! Not only was he incredibly considerate, approachable and kind, his changing lines ended up giving an actor friend a line and snagged him his SAG card. We were both members of AFTRA and I was also a member of AGMA at that time. For actors back then, getting SAG (and Equity) union cards was a big deal. Martin also hung out with cast and crew and one night at our hotel in Hyannis we all got buzzed buying rounds of drinks. He, treating everyone, as he was very kind and generous. All of the principal actors were terrific on that shoot. I even had dinner one evening with the beloved Geraldine Fitzgerald, whose last name was my late mother's family name. She told me we were very likely, along with JFK's mother, distantly related, as the clans (families) were broken up during the Irish potato famine and they lost touch as people left Ireland for CA, US, AU and elsewhere. It was indeed a truly wonderful experience. I remember Martin & Blair Brown (Jackie Kennedy) at the film wrap party in NYC and they greeted me like an old friend. When I moved to NYC I would run into Blair from time to time and she was always very sweet to say hello. I am so very grateful for those experiences and wonderful memories.

His emotional scene lol…..he’s just a good “ACTOR”
In my opinion, "Two Cathedrals" stands out as a particularly exceptional episode. Martin Sheen's performance in this episode was truly remarkable and worthy of recognition.
Two cathedrals was the absolute best hour of television ever written. There will never be anything that will have the grace, the heartache and the intense pain that that hour showed.
Agreed. All I can think of is that cigarette hitting the floor and him stomping it out.
Just saw Sorkin say, "If you wanna get something past Standards and Practices, use Latin." (he used bad words😁) Also said he wrote that episode backwards - started with Dire Straights music (his fav in H.S.) and worked his way back to the the story and images...
just decided to watch this episode.
"Richard Schiff was saying last night" - I love that they're all still pals, that is wonderful.
Anyone else been binge watching West Wing since 2016 for political sanity and integrity?
Yes it is my therapy! Many times I break into tears watching it. I can’t wait to get the book!!
I like it too, but frankly, we need to see it in REAL life not REEL life, Sorkin’s idealism.
It was the opposite for me. I rewatched the entire series countless times before 2016 but couldn’t since because it was too painful to see contrast between a decent fictional administration and a decent if ideologically different opposition; and the deplorable divide that has grown since Trump.
No. I live in reality
@@MaryBarlow-f2g Well, bless your li'l 🖤!
I couldn't agree with you more.
President Biden will go down in history as one of our greatest presidents! 💙🇺🇸 I will definitely be shedding more tears tonight.
I will never forget what President Biden did for us! I get emotional each time I think about how he saved us after his mentally ill predecessor attempted to ruin our democracy!
Biden: "where's Jackie"? Biden: " i defeated medicare" Biden: "I ran corn pop away from that swimming pool"
Waiting for those episodes
Mr. Sheen is not the only one who choked up while watching that. 😢
I rewatch The West Wing every four years during the presidential election season. It is indeed a tonic, a balm for my idealistic soul.

West Wing was the BEST thing to ever grace our TV screens.
Madam Secretary was pretty good too
Agreed !❤
Aaron Sorkin has such a distinctive style, especially with dialogue. Just a masterful story teller. Add to that a stellar cast that could actually play their parts without being over shadowed by the incredible talent of Martin Sheen. That has got to be a serious challenge to put together an ensemble cast that can shine as individuals while supporting the other characters so authentically. There were no "duds" in the cast. The sets were marvelous as well, not to mention the unique and effective camera work. All those walking scenes with long traveling camera shots must have been so challenging.
Top 3 for me along with The Wire and Battlestar Galactica.
It really is!!
I cried too Martin Sheen! Seeing John Spencer. I definitely had a moment. Very moving scene
Indeed. And, only eyes. No speaking. ❤❤❤❤❤
I binged the entire series in early 2017, and I think it kept me sane. Reminded me what service in the Presidency was really supposed to be.
O MY, Martin Sheen is volunteering his valuable time for the country! That's patriotism! Rich, famous, and selfless.
He's always done that!
I love Martin Sheen. ❤❤
Me too!!❤❤
Yes, he's a wonderful actor and person.🥰
Too bad Charlie is a dirt bag like hunter
I have been since 1969 the first time I saw him!
Good actor but Greg Stillson would have made a horrible president!!!
I've followed Martin Sheen's career forever. ❤ 😊 Thank you for featuring him.
I have too. Remember Badlands? I’m 72. Seen every Martin movie.
He was AWESOME Playing Greg Stillson in THE DEAD ZONE!!! Much more entertaining as a political figure in THE DEAD ZONE instead of THE WEST WING!!!
No forgiveness required, Mr. Sheen. 😊💙🤍❤️👍🏾

yeah, acting is not a crime; nor is being crazy
West Wing remains one of the best ever! Every American should watch it.... YES!
Totally agree!!!! 👍
I never watched it. But will now.
I live in a country on the other side of the world and have loved the show ever since I watched the full series on dvd. It's still is my favourite show ever.
@@wisdomcloud57 One of the head writers for that show was Lawrence O'Donnel
I’m going to You Tube it!
I fell in love with West Wing from the very first episode. Between Aaron Sorkins writing and the cast....it was MAGIC❤
l have no idea how many times l've watched The West Wing since Dicktator De L'Orange slithered down his gaudy escalator. lt was a palette cleanser for the nightmare we were living. Martin Sheen is a national treasure, that show never loses it's lustre!
I watch Veep lol I imagine that’s how trumps campaign is…. full idiots
Little nitpick - it's not about cleaning a (painter's) palette, it's about cleaning one's palate from a bad taste 🙃
Donnie actually started his run for office with the birther lie. Once he confirmed he was racist he had his cult.
I just keep watching it....I can speak the dialogue as it's on
Me too. Those 4 years I rewatched on repeat
Watching the West Wing now for the third or fourth time. Yes, John Spencer will live forever in our hearts.
Watched THE DEAD ZONE tons of times and Martin Sheen NAILED IT as Greg Stillson!!!
I'm a Brit, I'm fascinated by US politics. I love the West Wing. I've watched it 4 times now from start to finish. Finishing my latest run about 2 weeks ago.
MSNBC is a propaganda channel, just remember that.
3 times here recently
Only 4?
Kamala and Tim bring such joy. You can see it in the expressions on their faces.

I had the chance to spend some time with Martin Sheen earlier this year. Seriously one of the kindest, most genuine people I've ever met. I will never tolerate a negative thing being said about that man in my presence. I was blown away by his generosity with his time and with people.
The opening scene of the news room should also be used in her campaign. I am not American but every time I watch Will lecture about the spirit of the US, tears coming down my eyes.
Yes!!! Amazing speech, made me cry too!

''Kamala'' in India means fragrant Lotus flower.
''Kamala'' in the USA means POTUS.
So well said. Thank you
Thanks. Now lotus potus is stuck in my little brain! Lol
We haven't seen this since 2008.
well said .
It's AWESOME to see and listen to both Martin Sheen & Mary McCormack ....... LOVED them on The West Wing .... GREATEST SERIES EVER on TV !!!!! 😉❤❤👌👍👍👍

The West Wing was my grandma’s show. Towards the end of her life, she told me she wished Toby, Josh, and Sam were her sons. I am so glad I made West Wing watching night with her a priority. That time helped me shape my own real life political interests and opinions. The West Wing series was, and is, truly a gift.
And Joe Biden… he’s a national treasure! 🇺🇸

i salute and respect Martin Sheen for his integrity, his strong activism for peace, and his stalwart support of Democracy and HUMANITY❤❤❤❤

The question is whether Americans love America and democracy as much as President Joe Biden does.
