- The oil pump idler and driven gears on the 450/500 Austrian four stroke dirt bikes are plastic and warped gears and broken teeth have been the cause of motor failures for years.
Taco Moto has developed our own race ready solution to this issue.
CNC cut from aerospace grade 7075 aluminum and hard anodized in high wear areas like the center of the idler gear bore and the pump driven gear these Baja 1000 ready metal upgrade gears are works bike quality and proven race winners.

That’s how you do a tutorial.

9:14 Bolt with the thick copper washer - is that still the crank TDC locking device ?
Yes
Hey, could you make a video on how to mount the horn tucked up behind where the kick starter would be? Or even make a specialized mounting arm and vid?
Good idea
So It seems KTM did update the plastic gears to metal for the smaller displacement engines. The big bore bikes have larger gears that they left plastic for the 2023 model, so I think the only choice for the big bore bikes are aftermarket. Right?
Hey mate where would I be able to source some ktm 530 upgraded oil pump gears? I mean to say do you know if they make upgraded gears for this model still? Thanks.
Where did you get that “T-handle” torque wrench? The red handle one.
Was thinking the same thing. Like it!
Does the 23’ 450 XCF-W have the plastic gears? Different forums say yes and no 🤔
See video description for fitment 🤘🏽
Another great video by Taco Moto. Nice job!
Does 2022 KTM 500 excf has plastic gear as well or they fixed it for these new ones
See video description for fitment 🤘🏽
What’s that torque T handle you are using?
Search the Google for t-handle torque wrench. Forget where we got ours
Guess I’ll add this to the winter time To-Do list😅
What's with a lot of the bikes having those stupid plastic oil pump gears?
Low cost, low weight, low torque demand
Do the plastic gears fail??
@@lonestar27 they can and they have
Beta recommends to change the plastic gears at 80 to 100 hours of use. They are not good for long term durabilty. @@lonestar27
Just to clarify, water pump gear is timed 1 to 1 with the crankshaft, it's not timed to the camshaft. You don't need to find TDC, just line up the marks.
Do you have those for the 2012-2016 bikes as well?
Why would these be plastic in the 1st place? It is mind numbing as a mech design engineer to think KTM thought this was ok.... And to repeat doing so after engine failures have been reported....
Because there aren't any serious torsional/mechanical forces on them and gthey want to save on weight. Heat seems to be their major enemy.
After the engine is properly timed,Do i just pull out the balancer shaft gear?
If you need to
Excellent!
2024 fe501s still plastic gears ?
Cool. I was just wondering if the 450/500 had these gears. I replaced them on my 250 a couple years ago. I’ll do this when I install my kickstart kit 👍
My friend just had his 530 rebuilt. 200hrs and the valves were still in middle spec. The gears broke and blew it though.
When the motor is apart def time for new gears 💪🏽
From what I've read, it's not an issue on the Big Bore bikes. Only on the 250s and 350s 2015 - 2022. I have a 2022 450 and I don't think I'm going to mess with it.
Checked my 500exc 18 at around 200 hrs and the tooth were starting to be deformed.
