    if you dont want the red to bleed the best thing is put the white coat on let it dry really well , tape it up then do another thin coat of white over it, let it dry then do the red coats. This will 'seal' the tape edges and stop the bleeding - nice work

      This exactly! It's an old painter's trick I learned painting trim. That's IF you don't want the bleed. You'll get a nice crisp line.

      100% you will have to put 300 coats of white paint before it is actually white depending on the paint type.

    When that paint starts to peel and flake, and it will, it will look even more authentic. Don't forget the cigarette burn. Nice job!

    Cool bro, the VH striped guitars are fun to paint! I have done a Frankenstrat, the original B&W one and I also have the Bumblebee one. Just a friendly piece of advice for doing the stripes I learned from my own experience. On my first one I used "Frog Tape"masking tape and they all got those little bleed under edges like you got, no matter how well you burnish down the tape edges. Frog Tape is supposed to be the best masking tape for painting but I was really upset to see my edges were not clean. I am exceptionally picky when doing my paint jobs and ended up stripping off all of the paint and starting over - which REALLY SUCKED! I then tried using vinyl pin striping material you buy at automotive shops and it works AWESOME! You can bend it easier for curves and when you burnish it down, zero paint gets under the edges and when you peel it off, your lines are super crisp!
    I just wanted to pass this along, as it worked great on all my other guitars. I hope you all find this useful.

      rickpd2005 thanks for that tip! I noticed ya always get bleed thru around the tape...why I hate using it for household painting... trim and other stuff. Thought about doing some striping on a guitar I'm working on now. If I do, I'll surely try it! Thanks again!

      rickpd2005 you wont get much bleeding if you apply paint in thin mist layers

    • @bucknaked31
      @bucknaked31 6 років тому +4

      Karlo Klanac Good tip with the misting paint... you can also lay a barrier coat to seal the tape edges by shooting a light coat of the last color you sprayed before you taped off and letting it dry. If this coat bleeds, it matches the color of what was underneath it.

    • @TheBigwillistyle
      @TheBigwillistyle 6 років тому +1

      Paint stores sell good tape with the perfect widths for this stuff. I think it helps to go thin coats as well. That keeps bleeding to a minimum. Plus, it wears better.

    I think you and your dad did a fantastic job on this and it looks great. I painted a Tele with the similar red paint and it's been fine! No chipping or flaking! I didn't want a factory clear coat look and it's holding up! Only one thing. Not trying to be critical, just trying to help. I have a lot of experience with solder. When you were installing the ground wire, I noticed you dabbing the pencil. You got it backwards. Hold the heat on and dab the solder, till you have enough. The only place you need to be careful of getting too much heat is on the pots. I hold the heat to the back of the pot and quickly dab a blob of solder, heating it just till it spreads out. Remove the heat. Tin your wires with a little solder. Then touch the wire to the solder already on the back of the pot. Heat till solder flows, maybe dabbing a little more solder. Don't heat for too long. I tin all my wires before attatching them to anything. Good luck and I hope this helps!👍😎🎸🎶

    So I bought one of these but a cheap Chinese brand off eBay for $225. Out of the box it actually played good, neck was straight, intonation was right on. The only thing that needed to be done was the frets needed to be polished, when bending a string it felt like sandpaper lol but I just used polishing wheels on a dremel with polishing compound from a hardware store it was like a wax compound and the frets were mint afterwards didn’t take long at all. I then took the guitar apart to paint it. When putting it back together I installed a EVH tone pot because I love them. The tuners are crap but since it’s a locking Floyd I didn’t bother replacing them. I had to add a 4th spring for the bridge because 3 were not enough to play in standard tuning because of how the body is routed, you would need to route the body out more if you wanted to use less springs to play in standard tuning. The strap pegs are junk and use very small screws so for sure need some strap locks. It has a cheap Floyd rose but it actually works just fine I’ve used a bunch of cheap Floyd rose bridge’s sometimes they work great like this one and sometimes you just need to do some work to make them work good usually just need to file down rough spots and where the strings lock in the bridge then they work just fine but again this cheap Floyd needed nothing it works great, also don’t be an animal when tightening the bolts down they don’t need to be super super tight just snug so if they strip out don’t blame the manufacturer you over tighten them. The pickup actually sounds really good and doesn’t not squeal when playing loud I figured I would have to replace the pick up no way it would be good for that cheap of a guitar and I am the type of guy that replaces pickups in pretty much every guitar because I’m a tone chaser but I’m leaving this one for now. So bottom line the Chinese eBay Kramer is a great buy. If ur gonna play it at gigs I would replace the tuners, volume pot and strap locks then it’s definitely gig worthy. Because it’s a cheap Chinese guitar maybe they don’t put the same pickup in every guitar or maybe the quality is hit or miss so its possible you might want to change the pickup plus everyone has different taste but again I am all about tone and the pickup I got sounds great! If you go to guitar center to buy a new guitar this one is every bit as good as many new 500-1000 buck guitars. Oh last thing the Harmonics are super loud on this guitar, it’s just a loud guitar over all. If you don’t plug it in it’s super loud compared to almost anything I’ve ever played so the sustain is amazing!

    I just got my Kramer kit guitar but I don’t think I can do the standard evh colors I want to but I have a hard time playing somes guitar. I’m either gonna do black or some flashy 80’s colors! I’ve always wanted to do big metal flakes maybe orange like that super 70’s metal flake that was on the jet boats back then.

    I am an electronics engineer but I know nothing abut guitars. I started to do a little research after being given a broken guitar and decided to fix it. One thing I noticed is the common practice of soldering a cable to the claw surface with a big blob of solder. I know noise is often picked up on joints like this so why not drill a small hole in the claw to make a neat connection. Also there is often poor soldering on the pots

    • @yallevereatenbeans2723
      @yallevereatenbeans2723 5 років тому

    Well done. I loved doing mine, but I wished I would have gotten the wood from musicKraft like you did. Much more accurate. If someone is interested in building a 5150, just do it. Screw paying 1000s for one. It stays within the spirit of the actual one just being put together. It's rewarding to create something yourself and rock out to it also. • @edwardmonsariste4050
      @edwardmonsariste4050 5 років тому

      The 5150 and Musicman Axis (EVH) are top mount Floyd only. When you’re setting up your guitar, I can personally tell you how much of a pain this type of mount can be. To get low string height at higher frets, you have to shim the neck angle, over and over. A luthier tried to do a setting screw underneath one of my guitars, and it sucked the sustain away by not having the neck fitting the pocket correctly.
      Once you do get it set correctly, a top mount Floyd Rose is much better than floating. There’s extra sustain from the bridge mounted directly on the body, and it doesn’t thin the sound. Also, if you break a string, you can get through a song with 5 strings without the strings being way off pitch.

    Not sure what you were after, but no primer, no sanding, no clear coat and a lot of bleeding on your lines. As long as you’re happy with it, good to go.

      @e.l.norton 3 роки тому

      The original did not have perfect, sharp edges to the lines even when it was new. The new EVH replicas have perfect lines, but they look "off" as a result. Too clean. No vibe. These guitars were like the Millennium Falcon. Rough around the edges and thrown together. But, they got the job done.
      One thing people always get wrong is the color. The real one is more orange-ish than red. I've seen it up close. The original Frankie is very red. But, the 5150 definitely leaned more orange by comparison.

    • @RobNY5150

      I believe the neck and body were around $500. The entire project ran me around $650-$700.

    im just curious and dont mean to correct, question or criticize but why did you end up outside where there is wind bugs pollen debris of all sorts flying around when you had a nice enclosed paint room?

    • @RobNY5150
      @RobNY5150  6 років тому

      Scott Patterson that's a good question honestly I got tired of working in the confined space of the garage and even with a mask it got very misty so I took it outside. The paint actually came out ok no issues with pollen etc (just some running due to me inexperience)

    How much did the whole project run you? Meaning how much did it cost for the guitar, paint, and decals? Also what type of paint did you use? Did you use any clear coats?

    • @RobNY5150
      @RobNY5150  6 років тому +1

      I would say it was around $700 for the total cost including the spray paint, decals, floyd special, pickup, Dtuna etc. The spray paint I used is in the video. I ended up not using a clear coat because the paint already has a finish built in and I kinda wanted a homemade feel and look. The original didn't have a clear coat.

    How long do you wait to remove the tape? I made a frankenstrat build and I found pulling it off after a day made the paint lift up with it and it looked very jagged. What were your methods ?

    • @acedvulpes2759
      @acedvulpes2759 3 роки тому +1

      I pull mine off roughly 1 hour after all coats of white or red were put on. The paint remains tacky so it won’t pull up, just pick off the tape not the paint

    What kit do you suggest for a 5150 build, because musikraft is not doing bodies anymore?

    • @RobNY5150
      @RobNY5150  3 роки тому

      Actually I'm not sure who makes bodies right now that are musikraft quality. If you are looking for a cheaper kit, BYOGUITAR has a decent budget kramer kit but again, not of musikraft quality.
