I grew true black brandwine in the open field last summer . Very little fruit set and very sensitive to root diseases. Not worth it for a few fruits .Yield can be obtained if tried as grafted.
I’m sorry to hear that. Although the Pink Brandywine grows great here we are switching over to Beefsteak tomatoes. I noticed I get less splitting.
I've grown more different varieties of tomatoes than I can count over the years. I'm a small hobby gardener so I grow only about 4 different varieties every season and I've done this for more than 10 years. Each year, my wife and I do an informal taste test of each variety.
About five years ago we tried Brandywines. It produced well and the fruit looked good. But we found the taste bland. I was surprised by our finding since it conflicted with most other popular opinions. Of course, taste is subjective but it got me thinking that possibly tomatoes are like grapes. That is, certain types of tomatoes or grapes are affected by their growing conditions - soil and climate. I believe in wine producing areas they classify that as the terroir.
The Brandywine being an heirloom variety are not always the nice looking tomatoes 🍅 like you find in stores. Growing up in NJ this was one of the original tomatoes grown. I’ve been eating them all my life so I guess certain flavors from your childhood bring happiness. Sadly the Garden state as we are called has lost most of our farmland to housing and the tomatoes that are grown are not heirloom. They are grown for shelf life not taste. This is why I love gardening. No pesticides, no herbicides and no GMO.
I grew them too. Best looking tomato in the garden and the worst tasting. Haven't grown them since
@@BackyardFoodGarden I don't understand all this concern about GMO. To me, it's all about marketing hype. Retail fruits and vegetables that are GMO are extremely rare. And retail GMO seeds are non-existent.
GMO is a highly debated topic for sure. We grow heirloom varieties so we can save the seeds for next season.
Salt and pepper directly on tomato.
I eat them like apples. So good
Forgot to season the tomatoe 😬
Hope you like these tomatoes have a great growing season
I have nothing against g,m,o, tomatoes, they're just tomatoes, infact this year I bought GMO,seeds from my grocery store and I will plant few just to compare, besides there's lots of other GMO products we eat every day, like apels bananas.and so.happy gardening.
Hey from the UK ! were growing these on our allotment for the first time this year really looking forward to trying them !
Sounds great. Just so you know. My plants get 6 feet tall so they need a strong support. I hope you like them. 🍅
