I love how Japanese children eat such healthy food and really seem to enjoy it! Here in the U.S. most kids I know only what chicken nuggets, French fries, and ranch dressing. I can't imagine my nephew willingly eating edamame, etc.
Here in Italy it's kind of halfway between the two opposites . I'm not a kid anymore but when I go to a Japanese restaurant I always order a dish full of Edamame, they bring it still warm with some salt over it, so so delicious

She speaks English so well, for a child who has a different native language. I've hardly known any American kids who could fluently speak a foreign language (the only ones I have known are ones who have parents or other relatives from another country who taught them the language). I wish we taught kids in America foreign languages in school when they're young. They always say that the younger you learn a language, the easier it is.

It's pretty cool, but not that surprising. A lot of people are bilingual like that, it's no different from people who can speak both Spanish and English equally well. My Japanese friend and I are the same way since we have Japanese moms and American dads. :)

9 or 10 y/o, I can't remember but there is a video on her talking about her third grade homework. The family lived in Canada before shifting to Japan. (that was a few years back) Which her English is better that most Japaneses around at her age, although you do see that it is decreasing.
It's hard to judge if we understand the country's background. I think our country has a generation of teachers who wasn't taught or didn't find the right way to learn english :). And mine is bad, too.

In Japan when you go to a restaurant and you slurp on your noodles or whatever you're really eating it's actually kind of like a sign of respect, as the louder you slurp the host takes it as your really enjoying you food,I mean you don't wanna let the whole restaurant hear u lol,and at Japanese restaurant's your supposed to shout(in a respectful manner OBVIOUSLY) at the waiter or waitress when you're ready to order or if u need something,when I went on vacation to Japan both of those things were really hard to get use to lol. Oh and 1 more off thing, you're not supposed tip (usually)when u eat at a restaurant!!! I did anyways and they reacted almost as if they were offended,like I was calling them poor by tipping them. So my Japanese friend told me:NO MORE TIPPING LOL 😂. ATLEAST THATS THE EXPERIENCE I HAD WHILE I WAS THERE.
FAQs (Thanks for all the questions!) ¥3864 (~$40USD) for the food? That's for two adult meals (Aiko and I), one kid's meal (Shin), three drink bars, and three desserts. If you took out the drink bars and dessert it would have been about half the price. Do you have to pay for all the drinks? No, the water and green tea are free. Those are on the left side of the drink bar and you can get them yourself. In restaurants water is always free and often tea (usually green) is as well. Paying for food. Every time you order food, you're brought a new receipt and leave it where the ordering button is. When you're done, you bring it up to the cashier to pay, and they usually scan a barcode or QR code to pull up the order on the computer. You don't tip in Japan and only pay the price shown on the screen. You can split bills if you like. This restaurant is part of a company that owns many different family franchise restaurants, so you can pay with credit card and cash. If you go to smaller restaurants, they may only take cash. How do you write your name on the wait list if you don't know Japanese? If you stand around someone will help you (at least that's my experience). If not, just gesture to some staff when you see them come by and I'm sure you'll be able to get buy. These franchise family restaurants all have great picture menus, so you can easily point and get by. How do the wooden keys work for the shoe lockers? If you watch the video again, you'll see how they work. You take it out of the slot to lock the door, and put it in the slot to open it. Can an adult order from the kids menu? You're not supposed to. Some have the age range written on the menu. If you have kids with you and want to order something for an adult, I'm sure you can get away with it. Does everyone share the bathroom slippers? Yes. I was surprised that there was a smoking section in the restaurant. Yeah, that's one of the things that really gets to me when eating out at restaurants in Japan. I'm allergic to smoke, and don't want the kids exposed, so we end up eating at franchise restaurants a lot as they tend to have divided areas that have OK ventilation. Where is the mom? She wasn't at the restaurant this time, otherwise we probably would have shown her food. She was chilling at home.
Thats about as much as my family pays for resturaunt food in California (Lunch, not dinner, and not including desert. We dont buy desert. Too expensive for ice cream)

Of all the Japanese videos I watch (and it's a LOT) I think the thing I find the most interesting is the 'no shoes' issue (i.e., no shoes in house, different shoes in bathroom, outside shoes, school shoes, etc) Here in the USA, almost without exception, restaurants usually have a sign: NO SHIRT/NO SHOES/NO SERVICE. So, for me personally, seeing somebody walk around a restaurant barefooted looks odd :)
In Poland you have to take shoes off when you come into the house and you get slippers to wear. We dont have higher/lower levels or bathroom slippers though. I live in UK now and it baffels me that ppl actually wear shoes indoors. I wear panda slippers at mine and others prefer to run around in socks.
lucy girl parents must spend a lot on shoes..in Canada we wear shoes in public unless stated e.g: an indoor children's play area in the mall. We don't wear shoes in the house and ELEMENTARY school kids MUST bring a used pair of shoes to the class and it stays under their hanger. The reason is we have rainy weather in the the fall/winter and we can only carry so many things, so if my daughter wears her boots when she is in class she can choose to change shoes, but she needs to remember to wear boots outside..its alittle of back and forth changing of shoes. The used pair of shoes is thrown out each year.

2:59 when in japan, don’t be afraid to slurp noodles a little. It’s polite and show you really enjoy the food. Of course don’t go overboard and slurp until you get annoying, but you get what I mean.

In Canada (as I'm sure you're aware) "Family Restaurant" has many meanings ... Swiss Chalet is a mid-range rotisserie chicken place. The Keg, is a steak place, mid-range prices. Milestones, Moxies, are 'high end' places with prices to match. There are dozens of fast food places which like to consider themselves 'family' - McDonalds, Arby's, Harvey's, Burger King, Dairy Queen, Taco Bell/KFC, etc. etc. Then there are the mall food courts which have dozens upon dozens of places. :D
Depends what part of Canada you're in, but I think the equivalent would be places like Perkins, ABC Country, White Spot, Denny's and that sort. I don't know the popular restaurants out in the East though, so those examples may not work for you. Swiss Chalet probably also fits in the "family restaurant" category that I consider Yumean to be in. Miletsones, Moxie's, Earls, those are all higher end casual dining (in my books).

I think Asian food is quite a general term. You can find Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, etc... restaurants. The regular ones over here would simply be referred to as restaurants or family restaurants. There are many that specialize in one type of food, such as ramen, udon, soba, tempura, gyoza, tonkatsu, and so on. The family restaurants may carry a good number of these menu items though.
Life Where I'm From I think they were more meaning that you couldn't go to a "Japanese" restaurant in the states and order food like that that was just kind of a hodgepodge of stuff. Shin's meal especially isn't something you could find here (I'm in the northwest in a city with a massive Asian population)

the main entree was mostly noodles though which is cheap. Each bowl of noodle cost the restaurant like $1 lol.
You'd get paid differently for the same job in the USA vs Japan. Eventually it kind of evens out.

In Japan when you go to a restaurant and you slurp on your noodles or whatever you're really eating it's actually kind of like a sign of respect, as the louder you slurp the host takes it as your really enjoying you food,I mean you don't wanna let the whole restaurant hear u lol,and at Japanese restaurant's your supposed to shout(in a respectful manner OBVIOUSLY) at the waiter or waitress when you're ready to order or if u need something,when I went on vacation to Japan both of those things were really hard to get use to lol. Oh and 1 more off thing, you're not supposed tip (usually)when u eat at a restaurant!!! I did anyways and they reacted almost as if they were offended,like I was calling them poor by tipping them. So my Japanese friend told me:NO MORE TIPPING LOL 😂. ATLEAST THATS THE EXPERIENCE I HAD WHILE I WAS THERE.

¥3864 (~$40USD) for the food? That's for two adult meals (Aiko and I), one kid's meal (Shin), three drink bars, and three desserts. If you took out the drink bars and dessert it would have been about half the price.
Do you have to pay for all the drinks? No, the water and green tea are free. Those are on the left side of the drink bar and you can get them yourself. In restaurants water is always free and often tea (usually green) is as well.
Paying for food. Every time you order food, you're brought a new receipt and leave it where the ordering button is. When you're done, you bring it up to the cashier to pay, and they usually scan a barcode or QR code to pull up the order on the computer. You don't tip in Japan and only pay the price shown on the screen. You can split bills if you like. This restaurant is part of a company that owns many different family franchise restaurants, so you can pay with credit card and cash. If you go to smaller restaurants, they may only take cash.
How do you write your name on the wait list if you don't know Japanese? If you stand around someone will help you (at least that's my experience). If not, just gesture to some staff when you see them come by and I'm sure you'll be able to get buy. These franchise family restaurants all have great picture menus, so you can easily point and get by.
How do the wooden keys work for the shoe lockers? If you watch the video again, you'll see how they work. You take it out of the slot to lock the door, and put it in the slot to open it.
Can an adult order from the kids menu? You're not supposed to. Some have the age range written on the menu. If you have kids with you and want to order something for an adult, I'm sure you can get away with it.
Does everyone share the bathroom slippers? Yes.
I was surprised that there was a smoking section in the restaurant. Yeah, that's one of the things that really gets to me when eating out at restaurants in Japan. I'm allergic to smoke, and don't want the kids exposed, so we end up eating at franchise restaurants a lot as they tend to have divided areas that have OK ventilation.
Where is the mom? She wasn't at the restaurant this time, otherwise we probably would have shown her food. She was chilling at home.

Of all the Japanese videos I watch (and it's a LOT) I think the thing I find the most interesting is the 'no shoes' issue (i.e., no shoes in house, different shoes in bathroom, outside shoes, school shoes, etc) Here in the USA, almost without exception, restaurants usually have a sign: NO SHIRT/NO SHOES/NO SERVICE. So, for me personally, seeing somebody walk around a restaurant barefooted looks odd :)
Well dirty socks /feet are definitely cleaner than outdoor shoes, so to me the Asian way makes much more sense.
In Poland you have to take shoes off when you come into the house and you get slippers to wear. We dont have higher/lower levels or bathroom slippers though. I live in UK now and it baffels me that ppl actually wear shoes indoors. I wear panda slippers at mine and others prefer to run around in socks.
In Canada the only places you can't wear shoes I've found is houses and Dance studios but you have to wear shoes in public places
In Philippines you definitely have to wear shoes in public. But you have to remove them when you enter any house unless instructed otherwise.
lucy girl parents must spend a lot on shoes..in Canada we wear shoes in public unless stated e.g: an indoor children's play area in the mall. We don't wear shoes in the house and ELEMENTARY school kids MUST bring a used pair of shoes to the class and it stays under their hanger. The reason is we have rainy weather in the the fall/winter and we can only carry so many things, so if my daughter wears her boots when she is in class she can choose to change shoes, but she needs to remember to wear boots outside..its alittle of back and forth changing of shoes. The used pair of shoes is thrown out each year.

2:59 when in japan, don’t be afraid to slurp noodles a little. It’s polite and show you really enjoy the food. Of course don’t go overboard and slurp until you get annoying, but you get what I mean.

In Canada (as I'm sure you're aware) "Family Restaurant" has many meanings ...
Swiss Chalet is a mid-range rotisserie chicken place.
The Keg, is a steak place, mid-range prices.
Milestones, Moxies, are 'high end' places with prices to match.
There are dozens of fast food places which like to consider themselves 'family' - McDonalds, Arby's, Harvey's, Burger King, Dairy Queen, Taco Bell/KFC, etc. etc.
Then there are the mall food courts which have dozens upon dozens of places. :D
Depends what part of Canada you're in, but I think the equivalent would be places like Perkins, ABC Country, White Spot, Denny's and that sort. I don't know the popular restaurants out in the East though, so those examples may not work for you. Swiss Chalet probably also fits in the "family restaurant" category that I consider Yumean to be in. Miletsones, Moxie's, Earls, those are all higher end casual dining (in my books).

Makes me realize how Asian food in American restaurants is NOT Asian food at all! :-)
I think Asian food is quite a general term. You can find Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, etc... restaurants. The regular ones over here would simply be referred to as restaurants or family restaurants. There are many that specialize in one type of food, such as ramen, udon, soba, tempura, gyoza, tonkatsu, and so on. The family restaurants may carry a good number of these menu items though.
Life Where I'm From I think they were more meaning that you couldn't go to a "Japanese" restaurant in the states and order food like that that was just kind of a hodgepodge of stuff. Shin's meal especially isn't something you could find here (I'm in the northwest in a city with a massive Asian population)
