Have you ever expierienced the starting procedure of an Auto-Union V16 Engine? I was on my knees whith tears in my eyes, and blood running out of my ears!
Worked at Watkins Glen as a corner / flagger from 70-83 . 10 USGP and all the 6 hour races. The Matra was the loudest , exciting, shivers thru your core of anything I’ve seen live .
Only saw this car compete at Watkins Glen at the 6 hour. In person it sounded like a really mean charging elephant. Very distinctive, you could tell what it was with your eyes closed.
I was at Le Mans in 1974 to see Graham Hill drive this car to victory. The greatest V12 sound I've ever heard, greater than the red V12 cars from Moderna.
I visited the Matra museum at Romorantin, a little south of Orleans some years ago and behind the till was a screen with a video of the Matra V12 at full beans on a loop! I wonder if the girl on the till knew what a great job she had! Probably, yes!
Got to see/hear the Matra F1 car at Watkins Glen and Mosport; Matra 660/670 at the Watkins Glen 6 hours. Have them on cassette tapes...still play them every once in awhile to remind myself why that V12 had the best engine sound ever. Fortunate enough to meet Francois Cevert and Jean-Pierre Beltoise at Mosport.
1970's heading towards Mosport Park F1 Track Canada to cover the race Your pulse started to race miles outside the track when you heard Matra V12 there was NO other sound so beautiful thank you for this
Have been listening to this video lot of times. To me is still the best engine sound video on you tube. Le Mans track...classic race cars...various sounds....the Matra V12.. I love to run it full loud in my work shop when I'm working !
This has to be one of the greatest engine notes ever. This V12 is up there with the Judd V10, Cosworth DFV, Chevy V8 used in the Lola T70 etc, Alfa Busso V6, the BMW V12 used in the McLaren F1 and the Mazda R26B. I know there are lots of other great engines out there but those are the ones that always spring to mind first.
Mercedes-AMG M120 in the Pagani Zonda (especially the Zonda R and similar iterations), Ferrari F140 in the FXX Evoluzione, Ferrari Colombo in the 250 serie, 275 GTB and 312P Berlinetta, Ferrari flat-12 in the 512M, BMW M88/1 in the M1 Procar, etc...
I saw and heard the Matra at the Watkins Glen 6-Hour Endurance Race. Inbloodycredible engine sound. Pescarolo and Beltoise won that day and I'm proud to say that I got sprayed with champagne in the Winner's Circle.
Is the best sound I ever heard of a car engine and the first time I heard it, after a half hour I was with a headache cause by it,can you believe this,I think it was from the sound vibration of the V12,it was too hard for my ears
bobbytorgue You can never see the Matra MS670C too often as it also provides one of the most wonderful sounds a car can make! Thank you for the kind words :)
+HistoricRacingHD Hello. At 1.35, just after the smoking Porsche, is it a Chevron or a Lola T70 ? Backside, it looks like both, but the sound is not Lola.
+HistoricRacingHD I know the NSU-Wankel, but I have never heard of a Wankel on a sport car. Is it a rotor one ? or a rotative engine ? How do you say in english ? :-))
+Marc Ghesquiere Hehe it's a rotary yes ;) Think it was a 2 rotor if I can remember that correctly. I was actually stunned too that it had a wankel engine :o
What is the greatest ride of these Matra engined screamers. Probably Amons solo effort from I imagine midnight to 7am at Le Mans 24 hours, 7 hours at the wheel, he had gone into the zone and flying in the 3 litre G6 sports car and he was up to 2nd running flat out at warp speed against the Porsche monsters and 512. He was into the zone and could have gone up any speed but of course being Chris the fuel metre failed he ran out of gas and lacked the puff to push it tothe pits
Back when we actually turned up the volume to hear the cars... Now it's just the commentators doing their best to keep the race alive and frankly without them I would stop watching racing altogether.
Yep , nice car , y have been working on the ignition system...When i was working at Matra Velizy.Et j'y etais quand ON A GAGNE...BTW , the noise of the Ford...awfull!!!
I'm here after Gordon Murray said this was the best exhaust note he'd ever heard...he wasn't wrong
Great, I know I've got the right video!
Thanks!
I thought of this video after hearing the Cosworth on the test mule. I hope Gordon's just as enamored with the sound the T.50 will make.
he wasn't wasn"t wong !!
he was right :)
Wow cant disagree, I also like the Sauber c9/11. I like the Alfa Romero tipo 33 as well.
I was smitten by the V-12 Ferrari at Sebring and Daytona, 1964...
Thru 1973...
But this is the best ever sound...
PERIOD!
J.C.
I'll never forget the sound of the F1 Matra echoing off the Hockenheim grandstands. It would make your neck hair stand up.
Two of the sweetest sounds you will ever hear. A Merlin V12 in a Supermarine Spitfire and a V12 Matra
I was at Brands Hatch when Chris Amon spun his Matra out in front of me. Hearing it start up and roar away was just the greatest sound ever.

1972.
Well done seeing that race live .
Named Stradivarius. Wonderful sound¡¡¡¡
Mario Andretti commented that the Matra was just pure power and the sound was as you can see "brutal".
I visited the Matra museum at Romorantin, a little south of Orleans some years ago and behind the till was a screen with a video of the Matra V12 at full beans on a loop! I wonder if the girl on the till knew what a great job she had! Probably, yes!
The Matra is the best sounding engine... ever.
AlexMacIsKING i think you right, ferrari's 312t werent bad either but the echo on this souns so much deeper without losing that distinct v12 sound
toyota prius sounds better
Xerro No Vatimo idiot
*Obviously Doesn't Get the Blatant Sarcasam*
I've always been a fan of the Ferrari 312PB
That's the single greatest noise I've ever heard.
Heard the Lola t-70 ...its awesome..
I had the privilege of watching these cars race at Kyalami. I had grandstand tickets right opposite the pits. That sound pure magic.
Got to see/hear the Matra F1 car at Watkins Glen and Mosport; Matra 660/670 at the Watkins Glen 6 hours. +George faartz No problem! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Same experience heading into Watkins Glen. Although I loved the Ferraris, nothing came close to this sound.
Same here! I'll never forget the 3.0 Matra at The Glen
Love Mosport when you pull up to the gate and you can hear the engines screaming down the back straight into 8 and 9
Came here after watching Gordon Murray speak about these things regarding the new T50s sound. What an awesome sounding engine!

Matra V 12...
I’m here after I reading about racing V12 engine history, Oh my heart what can I say about that sound!
Gives me actual goosebumps

Got to come second only to the V16 BRM. A stunning engine noise, gorgeous.
The nicest sound i heard being a child in Monaco.
The Matra sounds like a group of people blaring into trumpets, except 10000000x more glorious.
Mitica vettura. Campione del mondo Marche 1973 e 1974
those high speed flybys are UNREAL
watching this far more often then I should.
bobbytorgue You can never see the Matra MS670C too often as it also provides one of the most wonderful sounds a car can make! Thank you for the kind words :)
simply the best sound for a car
The best sound in the history
What a sound!
Incredible sound!!
Fabulous sounding Matra.
Shadowboost It is indeed :) Love the car
George Martin : the sound of the Beatles

Wins In 72,73, 74 a great triumph for his superb engine.

+Marc Ghesquiere You're welcome :) Glad you enjoyed it!

you have a brilliant taste in engine sounds ;)
Best engine sound ever

Matra ❤
1:31 WOOOOW
Matra by far is the best sounding engine.....ever
Music to my ears! Thank-you.
You're welcome :)
Bellezas mecánicas, que hermosa época!!!
It was called the Screamer back in the day....Because you could hear it all lap round at Le Mans
this is true ASMR
So GREAT!!!
Thank you!
Un bruit le V12 matra ... Mieux que n importe quel orchestre philharmonique
Quel son !!!!
What is the best lap time of these 70's cars on the actual track of Le Mans ?
What cars are howling at 1:35? Have been searching but cannot find it..
Many thanks!
Nice - other than its not a 670C - they weren't out until 1974. The Graham Hill car is a 670.
Le chant du coq... The sound
matra simca managed to make a v12 sound better than f1 did 20 years later...
I am always surprised at how deliberate the road racing guys make their shifts
What kinda engine size it that engine a 3 or 4 or 5 liter v12
3.0
only one other car sounds this good and that's a Porsche 917
+geddy1972 yes and a Mercedes C9 Group C monster
And Mazda 787B
BMR16. 1.5L
Fantastico 12 cilindri
Another great video my good sir :)
Well thank you very much! I really appreciate your comments :)
Love it ! 👌
+historicracinghd do have videos on ford gt40 mk.IV?
Sounds almost as good as the AAR Eagle V12 engine that I worked with back in the late 60s.

My favorite engine sound is Audi S1 but this sounds amazing!
490 bhp / 366 KW @ 11,500 rpm
nice sound
Thank you very much!
0:39-0:56-1:11-1:45-2:22-2:54-3:03-3:26-3:55
Its sound exactly as old F1.....good timens....
Voilà comment Matra a rendu le sport automobile populaire
moteur fantastique super bruit
Yep , nice car , y have been working on the ignition system...When i was working at Matra Velizy.Et j'y etais quand ON A GAGNE...BTW , the noise of the Ford...awfull!!!
1972 le mans winner folks....
This engine screams. And then the Mazda came along in the '80s!
Mazda 787B
ua-cam.com/video/OjwwV20iZYE/v-deo.html
i made a model version of this car by myself
If this doesn't get your engine revving then you don't have high octane fuel flowing through your veins.
What cars are 1:31 & 1:35??
Porsche 906 and Chevron B16
Georges Martin was the designer of this engine
another howeller is a lola 282 with dfv ford v8
1972? so its MS670B.
MS670C
and then elephants went back in india and africa :)
Take away that green stuff on the sides, and the Matra is wearing the same colors as Bugatti! And, at 3:35 a 914!
Kind of sounds like Louis Armstrong
NO SOUND BEST EVER!!!!!!!!!!!
BMW in line 6 sounds pretty much like this. Godly.
No.
No.
mmmmmmmm no.
Rien a voir avec les V6 'mobylette' de F1.
