I heard that when Leonard Cohen heard this he said,”That song never needs to be sung again.” A pairing of perfection. I love them both.
Bingo...
Two fine Canadians! 🇨🇦
Thank you both❤
She has a stunning voice....simply wonderful.
Totally Agree
This is the best live performance i ever seen.
Hands down, best opening ceremony ever. And this performance is incredible. 👏🌹
What makes KD so special is that she understands her voice completely. All the runs and flourishes she KNOWS she doesn’t need. The rich tone of her voice and the control she has is what resonates the most. This was just so so beautiful!
Beautifully said. 😭
Yes, beautifully said.
Y E S! Others could take some lessons
Many people don’t like her because she’s “different”. But with a rich voice like hers, you just close your eyes and LISTEN………
Agreed 100000%
This world needs hallelujah now more than ever. If u are watching this in 2024 u are a legend.!!!

I 💯 agree with you!((
greetings from Berlin Germany
Watched this so many times. For me this is the best version ever.
I am an American. I watched K.D. Lang perform Leonard Cohen's Hellelujah via the televison and was moved by the words and K.D's interpretation. In 2024, the song still resonates with me. A great Olympics, great opening ceremonies and great performers. Thanks, Canada!!
🇨🇦❤️
13 years later and I still get goose bumps listening to K.D. sing this rendition of Hallelujah. THEBEST EVER.
Me too
I watched this 10 times on opening night, simply awesome.
Agreed
Cohen liked it better than his own rendition...and he said ao !
BRAVO.!!!!
………will always be the………….BEST! Rendition to this song!!
What I find amazing is her ability to keep and hold notes without doing crazy runs and changes because she can actually sing them without all that...such a phenomenal Canadian talent!
well said!
Eww... Canada
@@jason4547 hoping that was a joke comment :P
Many singers today do unnecessary runs that take away from the performance. Myself, I think it is often done because they think they have the skill to do it. Just because you have the skill doesn't mean you should do it. Knowing when and how to do it is the key. For me, the simpler the better.
One of the best female artists ever
A song written by one of Canada's best songwriters performed by one of Canada's greatest singers. This is not just a national highlight but a high mark for anyone who enjoys beauty. Absolutely stunning performance.
@jane rae What this was amazing. Her vocals so pure and the way she sang it gave me goosebumps. Sorry cannot understand how you could say that. The comments she got everyone was blown away and truly moved..🤔😢
@jane rae HAHAHAHAH
@@thenoahzacky1 😂😂😂
@jane rae susan boyle 😂😂
@jane rae You should put your personal issues where the sun don't shine. This is a great performance....
I remember watching this on live TV and crying the whole way through.
A proud Canadian honouring one of Canada's greatest. It was so beautiful.
Still makes me tear up to this day.
Love it! Best ever!!!!!!!
Well, just think Mariah Bell will be skating to this in Beijing in like a month!
Me too
I was in the stands that night at the opening ceremony of the Olympics. One of those candle lights waving is me! It's of course amazing to watch this here, but I cannot tell you what it felt like to be there watching her sing it live. The energy of the Olympics. The pride of a Nation. We all had tears in our eyes and goosebumps. I will never forget it.
Awesome. I could only imagine. I remember rolling my eyes at the beginning to being obcessed at the end. She was such a surprise and high light.
I bet! It doesn't matter how many times you watch this you get the same goosebumps and the same choked up feeling in your chest. She mastered this song like no one else before or since. Her voice is a true gift.
Bloody Brilliant. Special always ♥
You lucky person. She’s simply spectacular 🇳🇿😀
🥺
In my opinion she’s the best on this song. It is baffling why she’s not a bigger star because she has one of the most beautiful voices alive.
Simple, she won’t play the “game” or change herself so she admits there’s no place to play her on radio… she’s not pop, not country, not any pre set genre…. She’s amazing! Seeing her live in a small venue is a transformational experience!
@@TheMummaneedles She was just getting started when I was at U of A; the first time I saw her she was performing outside in the middle of the quad, during orientation. Wedding dress and cowboy boots phase. I was supposed to be registering somewhere but stayed and watched the whole thing. Saw her quite a few times around town during those years and said to a friend once, "probably some day I won't be able to afford to go see her". She's so amazing, though I did love the rockabilly years.
Completely agree.
The.best.ever.rendition.of.this.song.EVER.
I absolutely agree.
Listening again in 2023 with absolutely nothing else but chills running down my spine. Such an incredible voice… what an fantastic start of the Olympics!
I saw her do this live at the final dress rehearsal in 2010. I remember my colleague saying afterwards "I just fell in love with KD Lang." Still brings me to tears every time i hear her sing this piece. What an absolute privilege it is to hear her sing.
Just perfect ❤ so under rated singer,,,so modest bless her ❤❤
I love how pure her performance is. No crazy visuals, no extravagant wardrobe, none of that superficial stuff. Just KD Lang singing, pouring her heart and soul into every single note. That's what music is all about.
No frills, nothing fake, and not even wearing shoes, because she doesn't need any props to make her 'seem' better. She's the real deal, no one does this song better than she does, and her voice is like that of an angel.
The only singers to touch this are Pentatonic. KD Lang is so underrated.
K.D. Lang is a one of a kindled with a beautiful voice. She is so special. I love her voice. She doesn't need all the extra trappings a lot of other singers use. I have loved her voice since I first heard her sing years ago and she just gets better every time I hear her. She has a God given talent.
Ohmygawd, this woman....that voice......what more will we ever need? I saw her perform in Louisville KY in the early nineties. She danced in bubbles and now I am complete. LoL
She is an Authentic creator- Leonard would have loved her!!
K.D. Lang is so underrated it's a freaking crime. Shes so amazing singing this like its her destiny.
💖🤩💖
She is not under rated in Australia. She has legend status. Saw her last year in Sydney and she was brilliant.
She is phenomenal and as stated very terribly underrated. No one has sung this better! I think of this performance often.❣
@@pamster9289 I watch this on a daily basis lately, beautiful, soulful!;💓
Her destiny and mine!
K.D., It’s 14 years later, but I will NEVER forget this! Thank you!
She, in Vancouver 2010 and Celine in Paris 2024. Both priceless.
11 years later and I still get choked up by her amazing performance.
I get chills when I watch it! That big venue and you could have heard a pin drop with the reverence of
listening to KD.
Chills
I was just bout to say the same !
One of the best female vocalists alive.
Forget "female."
Seen many performances of this song. THIS is HOW the song is to be sung! Beautiful, emotional, respectful. Still the best version out there.
She sang this to Leonard Cohen...
He cried.
Leonard Cohen achieved the miracle of his written song halaluja in k.d.Langs interpretation ,rendition.
I heard this live and still cry every time I hear ii again
2022 and still brings chills. Absolutely brilliant vocal masterpiece. Every nuance of her voice every note ..you feel the song. Unbelievable.
Goose bumps and tears, so moving.
yes!
And in 2023!!!
I have heard this song performed by many different artists but they can never come close to her performance.
YOU ARE SO RIGHT
I agree she is amazing, but no need to put other artists down
Wow, this is simply exquisite
@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 She's not putting other artists down, she's stating fact.
Jean Taylor it’s all subjective but I’m sure everyone will agree Jeff Buckley’s version is special.
Canada's first gold medal of the 2010 Vancouver games was for this performance by KD Lang. 🇨🇦
It's been 13 years and I still come back and have a listen to this regularly. Stops me in my tracks. The most beautiful version of a Canadian classic, sung by one of the most gifted voices on planet Earth.
agreed! and i do as well.
I absolutely LOVE her voice. You just close your eyes and listen ………
Me too~
That performance was the highlight of a lifetime… everyone that was there….were blessed!
13 years went fast
KD is the only one who does the subtle minor fourth before the major fifth and Hallelujah for that important addition. Very moving interpretation that I felt privileged to witness.
What I always listen for. Rare...
I totally, absolutely agree.
Celtic Thunder does a cover and the singer does it. It isn't anywhere near as noticeable as here. from what i have heard, she has the best interpretation of that part of the song, and i adore Jeff Buckley's version.
Can you please give me the time when she does this?

K.D Lang is a gift to human kind.
J024 truly!! Gorgeous voice.
Amazing voice
Incredible
Yes
Amen
One of the BEST female singers of all time. The emotion felt with her songs is breathtaking. Proud she is a Canadian.
You all are sneaky!! Had no idea she was, until I saw this moving performance she gave at the '08 Olympics.
Then again I didn't know Nelly Furtado was either, until that night! Haha
Canada rocks! (And I am from the US)
So true love her her voice is amazing!
By far the most emotional version I have ever heard of this song! Canada, you should be so proud. She is amazing. Much love from a huge Aussie KD fan! 🇦🇺💖 🇨🇦
The events leading up to the performance added to the emotion.
I'm 65 year old. This is by far the greatest Olympic event of my lifetime. Thank you k.d. lang
one of the richest voices I have ever had the privilege to hear
Hands down best Olympic opening or closing ceremony performance ever; unlike Pavarotti or Kylie Minogue (other faves), K.D. does something nobody else can do, something incredibly distinctive even our hearts get goosebumps.
She was also amazing during the Opening Ceremony of the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta. I was there and will never forget that day!
She could sing the operating instructions for a fire extinguisher.... I'd still cry.
lmfao....omg....so tue

Absolutely stunning version. Her voice is pure magic.

One of Canada's best!
Hes a girl?!
Oh yes, I'll never forget her song that put her on the International map, 'Constant Craving' in 1993. Just beautiful. I wish I was 23yrs again :(
Totally agree
I doubt this song will ever be done better than this.
Never. Never ever.
I personally believe Jeff Buckley’s version is the best.
Mashimaro please do yourself a favor by listening to Jeff’s version.
She's better than Jeff Buckley by a long shot.
Mark Scofkoe agree
This song will never be performed any better than this. It is sheer perfection!
Yes 100%
Agreed! 😊
Bon jovi does it well
Yes perfection
Raúl Esparza did an amazing version, definitely worth listening to.
Best. Rendition. Ever. Bar none.
ACS402010 Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But only after Leonard Cohen. The writer and composer.
@@ellendickson5523 - Leonard Cohen is quoted as stating that this was exactly what he imagined the song should sound like while he was writing it. Can't get a better compliment than that. :)
(Huge Leonard Cohen fan BTW)
@@BobSoltis1 So am I. And 🇨🇦 at that!
@@ellendickson5523 Here is what Leonard Cohen said after hearing k d lang sing it.
“After hearing KD Lang perform [Hallelujah] at the Canadian Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2006 we [Leonard Cohen & I] looked at each other and said, 'Well, I think we can lay that song to rest now! It's really been done to its ultimate blissful state of perfection. '” Anjani.Sep 28, 2019
Wonderful!!! Anyone watching this during covid? As a Canadian I'm overly proud.
Where is kd now
The best version imho
As a human, I’m overly proud!
You have a right to be proud. In my opinion, this is the most powerful performance of any Olympics opening ceremony. Still gives me chills.
Was lucky to volunteer during the 2010 Olympics. Truly, I've never seen my home town (and the world) united in friendship and happiness. It would be heaven to re-live the 2010 experience.
Hands down best music performance at any Olympics or sporting event. Its one of the best live concert performances in pop music ever. period.
Celine (ironically another Canadian) may just have succeeded.
I am 52 and have seen many hundreds of live performances. I am a huge music fan. I saw this opening on TV live for the Vancouver Olympics in 2010. Look folks......this performance is in my top 3 and I argue with myself being the best live vocal presentation ever. (And know this is very rare when not in studio and while live.) K.D. Lang is truly and without any doubt at the VERY top of her craft, and I continue to see her to this day whenever she is in Vancouver. While there are a very few other really really great singers who may be able to match her perfect pitch........there are very few great vocalists at this level who truly know how to also emote!! Such a rarity is K.D. Lang. Keep the faith peeps, and keep the faith K.D. Lang. It is sooooo noticed and sooooo appreciated.
Michael Tessler
Being the olympics, and the biggest live stage in existence, I agree it is arguably the greatest live performance of all time.
The best rendition of this song I've ever heard I'm proud to know she's Canadian
Leonard Cohen was overheard saying after listening to her sing this song "that's it , no one else needs to sing this song" .
Written by Leonard Cohen, a Canadian legend from Montreal, interpreted by an small town Alberta legend. We are so fortunate to experience their talent.
The moment the Rest of the World discovered our k d.....a voice they will Never forget or settle for any other one else's version
. She did Canada proud. Leonard Cohen would be in awe of her as we all are.
Seriously, Canada!! Gordon Lightfoot, Rufus Wainwright, The Junkies, Joni Mitchell, Rush, Neil Young LEONARD COHEN....AND KD!!!!!!!!! OK Celine too. each one's been a total fave at some point in my humble existence. Heck I even went for Ian and Sylvia back in the day. THANKS for CANADA
I never felt more proud to be a Canadian than that night.

She's just the best! Ive loved her voice since the first time I heard it many many years ago. This version of Hallelujah is the best I ever heard and brings me to tears everytime I hear her sing it.
One of the best singers in the world today. Utterly stunning.
Absolutely breathtaking and moving!!! Over the course of 9 years I’ve literally watched this version 100’s of times and it still moves me each time!!!

I just listened to a supposedly fabulous rendition on AGT. Had to come back to listen to the perfect one. My all time favorite.
This particular song and artist should be a part of the 7 wonders of the world.
Such an incredible voice! She sang that amazing song with such purpose, and it is by far one of the BEST performances of all time!!
Agreed. I come back often to listen. Best version. Thanks, KD.
I all ways enjoy K D Lang, she is my favourite singer, wish she would sing more
I'm at a loss for words. Literally. I could listen to her all day and never grow tired. Can't understand why she's so underrated.
She's not underrated in my book. I think she's absolutely fantastic.
@@suzannebowyer8752 she is defiantly underrated. She is the best voice of our generation and never gotten the super star status that she deserves. Even though somewhat ignored she’s made it. Where are all those that got the airtime. Her voice has stood the test of time. And what a voice it is. The Best!!!
People like KD Lang are put on earth to ensure all of us there is truly a heaven.
I watched her performance in 2010 and I still watch it in 2024 and it still brings tears to o my eyes and tugs at my heart. You are a legend KD ♥️

Such a nice thing to say!
Though I've heard this song many times before, by many different artist, because of how k.d. lang connected to, and performed Hallelujah, for the first time, I have an insight into what it is about. Or rather, for the first time, this song has gone beyond sounding beautiful, and now it speaks to my soul. Thank you k.d. lang.

If there was ever any doubt about KD being the best voice of all time, you only need to listen to this performance to understand why she is so loved by so many. Never get tired of listening to her.❤❤❤
One of the most unique voices to have ever walked our planet.
Still the greatest cover of this classic Cohen song. NOTHING will ever top this performance.
This has to arguably be the best performance in Olympic Ceremony history.

I got here from the video of Pavarotti in Torino. It was historical moment and to me a better performance.

This is by far the best rendition of Leonard Cohen's song Hallelujah! The range and clarity song by KD is unmatched ... perfection!

@jane rae sorry Jane. You know not what you speak. Susan's voice and style are not comparable to kd's.
I saw k.d. live decades ago at a small club in Cambridge, Ma. (The Nightstage) She was unheard of ànd tore the house down! Her voice flows thru your body like drums at an outdoor football game! Her voice was pure, alive, and intense! I've been in love with her ever since. Thank you k.d.
@jane rae aren't you nasty though.. We were talking about k.d. not Susan Boyle but I guess apple and orange comparisons fit your mental acuity since you seem to enjoy making disparaging remarks I assume you like to take them too.
What a love fest with KD’s beautiful voice?! KD owns this song & I’m sure Leonard would have agreed. 🙏🏻👏🩵

I love this song and always keep coming back to KD’s rendition. Just beautiful!
Agreed, listen to Jeff Buckley and Bon Jovi as well.
I had the privilege of working the lead up and the games themselves, including the opening ceremonies. I remember when K.D. came in and she insisted on doing it live with orchestra and not performing to a recorded tape for vocal backup. Her voice and the performance was amazing.
And her performance at the full dress was nearly as amazing. We didn’t have a full house. About 20 000 and no electric candles but when her voice touched us people took out their cell phones and turned their screens on. By half way through the bowl was filled by the light of the appreciation we had.

I was lucky enough to be attending Red Deer college at the time when she was a student in the music program. the students used to give free concerts at lunch time and when I heard her sing Hey jude OMG it was breathtaking. we all knew she was going to make it big time. I feel privileged to have been there and seen her at the very beginning of what is an amazing career
She started out singing country covers in Edmonton, Alberta, but soon proved she could do much more than the country stuff. Then on to Toronto and the CBC, where she had a wider audience, and was “discovered”.

KD sings this Leonard Cohen song just like it should be interpreted. She is and Mr. Cohen are treasures for us all! Thank you.
From a documentary about Leonard Cohen, he was asked originally to sing Hallelujah at the opening, he graciously recommended it be sung by KD Lang. You can see why, a monumental performance, the best ever.
This lady is so talented, her voice calm and relaxing, what a load of talent.
THIS IS THE VERY BEST VERSION OF THIS SONG.
PEOPLE DENOUNCE THIS VERSION, BUT I THINK IT IS
OF THE SOUL AND CANNOT BE OVERTHROWN.
THIS WOMAN GIVES ME GOOSE BUMPS. NOBODY CAN BEND A NOTE LIKE HER.
Agreed. Many attempt to do justice to this classic song. Few succeed. Even fewer triumph. This was a gold medal performance.
Her voice is so beautiful that even my ears are smiling.
I'm a RUSH fanatic as my moniker suggests so one might think that KD's voice combined with the very low key nature of the musical accompaniment would be lost on me however there is something about her presence, delivery and certainly her voice that sets her apart from others who might attempt this song. She, and this song are a one of a kind. If I didn't know better I'd think that Leonard wrote the song just for her. Very moving.
Still amazes years later. Best hallelujah performance of anyone ever.
Look up Helene Fischer and Rea Garvey They were amazing
KD Lang owned that song! Hallelujah! Her rendition is so beautiful, no one can touch it! I can listen to it over and over again and still get goose bumps!
Just the most beautiful version ever! Can watch it over and over leaves you with tears in your eyes, for many reasons.
K. D. Lang is a Legend! That's why Roy Orbison gave her the song 'Crying' as her own. She's just amazing! 💞💞💞 She can hold a note like noone else. I wonder if she sings barefoot to feel the music. I've seen several of her performances and she's usually barefoot. I know some do it to feel the music especially several deaf singers. 💗💗💗
I just read that Leonard Cohen was asked to sing it himself for the ceremony, but he recommended KD instead.
I have heard this song so many times but she is the best I have heard what a fantastic voice!

The marriage of music, voice and light is pure genius, and perfection.
Goosebumps every time I hear her hit that long note near the end. By far, one of my favorite Olympic performances in recent memory, although the London closing ceremonies do come a very close second.
Well, yeah, the _entire_ London closing ceremonies aggregated, maybe. But Neil Young's "Long May You Run" at the closing ceremonies deserves to be in the conversation as well.
