OhMyStars! I was gifted 30 sample books wondering how to get the fabric out 😂 Thank you for the tips! What size needle did you use? What shears do you use? They look huge & vintage 💖 Who digitized your logo? How about a zipper bag using fabric samples?
Catherine, love this video, I grab these anytime I can, any more ideas on what to make, I am addicted to these! Thank for the cutting pliers, didn't know about these. I always depended ony husband to take care of that also. One day, I just soaked these and the paper came all off, no problem.
I had some beautiful fabric books from a London Designer Nina Campbell and Sanderson of `London and the fabrics are stunning and `I have made many gifts of bags and items with them. The fabric is o substantial and the items come out really well! The bag looks great! Thanks for the tutorial!
I found water generally separates the paper/glue from the fabric. I sprinkled water (heavily) on the paper back and let it soak in for a few minutes. Most of the time it peeled right off. I would sprinkle a dozen or so then peel off, then continue to another "batch". If any glue residue is left, you can usually swish the piece(es) in a bowl of water to remove most of it. Kind of messy but I thought it was worth it
I tried water but I think it depends which fabrics you use and some fabrics look different or dry out of shape once they've been wet. I prefer iron/steam heat but even then when pulling on the fabric with stubborn glued p-on paper, the fabric can end up out of shape. So now I do less paper removal, cut off the hard glue edges and leave it at that, I just go slower through the thick layers and need to change needles more often :)
Hey Catherine, love every video! Tip, I use a chop stick to turn out the corners, pointy side works well and the stick has length so it goes deep into the corners.
Another amazing one, It's very difficult for us to find those books in our area - too many creatives battling for dibs. We use all of our scraps in our scrap bin to make a "crumb quilt" that students make bags, shorts, pillows, and all sorts of things. It keeps the scraps from the land fill, keeps them sewing, and they LOVE them when they are done.
@@CatherineSews I used to just call them "scrap quilts" but then one of the upcyclers from England called it a "crumb quilt" and I can't go back. The term cracks me up every time.
Nice lesson! I currently have been gifted 14 5’ bolt rolls, roughly 20 sample books of assorted sizes… trying to store and keep them is going to be the biggest challenge!!!
Great video! Beautiful fabric in a beautiful bag! I thought that you made the boxing corners so that the bag will stand up. So therefore shouldn’t you have used very heavy interfacing?
I have made at least 10 of these bags and they come out great each time!! My friend gave me a ton of upholstery fabrics off of the books some have paper (ok) beautiful stuff! Thank You so much for this pattern I'm having so much fun!
Hard to believe, but a friend just offered me a whole box full of sample books and I wasn't sure what I would do with them. I almost said, no thanks, but then I saw this video... how timely!!
Oh, that's so perfect! You'll have tons of fun with them. I'm planning a couple more videos on other projects with sample books because the possibilities are endless!
Your idea of approaching interior design shops for outdated fabric sample books is awesome! I’ll either be careful with polypropylene or maybe use cotton webbing for straps.
I love this low hassle, relaxed way you have and this helpful tutorial thank you - and wow your fabulous embroidered pocket! So terribly frustrating when something goes wrong right at the end, I hate having to unpick and redo, but sometimes there's no option but grit your teeth and get it sorted haha!
Hi Catherine great video there’s nothing better than a few free sample books, I love using them, thanks for mentioning and linking my channel I have subscribed so can’t wait to see your next video, happy sewing 🧵🌼
I like to use the services.but I clip every inch, inch and a 1/2 which means it has give. Or cut thru 1/2 of length- usu. works great.good moves stitching it all together.
Loving all your videos they are so informative and inspiring. I would love to know how you go about getting one of the sample books as I think they would make a great throw for the sofa or bed. xx
Hi Jacqueline, I really just got lucky! An interior designer donated a bunch of them to my classroom. I've heard some viewers say that they have to pay for them in their area. I'd start with a phone call to a local interior designer and see how it goes!
@@lorainemacdonald517 That is not bad I paid about the same they also had wallpaper too and as a designer have found literally tons of things to make with them! I love using my skills so that I dont waste anything.
Wow, what a difference. Here in Canada, designers are happy to find someone who can use them so they don't end up in the landfill. Thanks for watching, and happy holidays to you in South Africa!
@@CatherineSews When you showed that melted strap, I FELT that cr*p! Totally reminded me of when I messed up by buying the wrong shrimp on my $100 sushi video.
What type/weight of thread do you use to sew upholstery fabric and what machine settings do you use? I am sewing my first bag using upholstery fabric and I'm using a heavier weight thread (Home Decorator), but I am having trouble maintaining an even upper and lower tension using this heavier thread. The thread is mildly looping on the underside of the fabric. Thank you!
Sorry for missing your comment until right now! I used my go-to regular cone thread and standard settings. The decorator fabrics I was using were not heavy enough to require anything special in the needle, thread or settings! If you're getting loops on the bottom, it means your top thread needs more tension. Or, it can also be that your bobbin is not inserted correctly. Flip your bobbin over and try again.
You need the gap so be able to turn the bag right side out, but you can sew the gap closed any time after you turn the bag out. I tend to wait till the very end just in case I see something that needs to be corrected!

Right!!??
What a sweet bench for a family portrait with your gorgeous cut flower garden as a backdrop!!! Couldn’t be more beautiful!
It is wonderful that you share problems and solutions such as melting the webbing with the iron. This is how everyone learns. Thanks for sharing.

That sounds like a good process. I'll be doing more with sample books soon, so I'll try that. Thanks for the suggestion!

If you didn't want to cut off the part of the fabric where the holes from the staples are you could add some trim or buttons to cover the holes.
Yesterday I watched your video, today I had made 2 bags!!!
Amazing! That makes my day!

Thank you so much! I needed this one because I have soooooooooo many fabric sample books ☺️
Glad it was helpful! They're such a great resource.
Where do you get these books? Please
Are the fabric sample books from future stores?

I have some of these, but could not figure out how to remove the paper. Thx for the tip.
Hopefully it works for you! I find with different sample books, it's 50/50! But even if the paper doesn't come off, I still get a nice bag out of it.

Where do I get the fabric samples from. Those are what I am looking for and I only get 3x3 squares or 4x4 please and thank you
I love it💯💥✨🌟
Thank you
How do you get these samples? I would love to get one we make small quilts for the nursing homes🤗

Each of my sheets have a sticky tag on the front and leaves a dreadful little sticky patch when it is removed.
Oh, what a waste! That's too bad. You could try using a product like Goof Off to get the sticky stuff off.
Have you tried orange spray that helps get the sticky off
couldn't you just wash the material to get the paper of
