    Great video. I really like your use of shirring on the cuff. I have avoided shirring because I didn’t want to deal with winding bobbins. I will try using my coverstitch. Thank you

    Fabulous Alison. When you were telling us about the length of time to create the shirring I shouted out “40 minutes “ at the same time as you. It was so lovely to meet everyone on Sunday. All of you guys were such an inspiration to me. Will be challenging myself and taking myself out of the comfort zone I’m in to create something a bit more special. Thanks again

    I tried shirring with my machine (a pretty old computer machine) and didn’t work. Now I just bought a cover machine because I wanted nice hems and chain stitch for muslins because they are easy to unravel for alterations. I also had a nice overall with a too small bodice and it had a shirred chain stitch. I am sooooo happy to see it works as I imagined it. No more hand winding of the bobbin, just chain stitch and that’s it! ❤❤❤

      Yes Tina I altered the stitch length too to 4 mines auto tension so I didn’t have to adjust that, just change the needle position to the one that suits you. When you chain off leave a long chain so it doesn’t spring back through the looper x

    Don’t blame you for being excited. I did it recently on double gauze and regardless of setting tests could not get it tight. I wondered if I could use the serger with the blade disengaged. I don’t have a cover stitch machine. I do have a manual Brother from the 1990’s and it may work better. I did test the same settings on double gauze and poplin and the poplin shirred more as expected. This was fun to see. Great that you figured out a speedy solution.

      I’m not sure a server would work as it forms a different type of stitch to a coverstitch machine. But it works on a sewing machine it just takes longer

    I’ve done a lot of shirring over the years making sun frocks for 3 girls when they were little BUT I had no idea you could use your coverpro to shir. We didn’t have cover-row back then, but I do now and I now have 3 granddaughters to sew sun frocks for so WHOO HOO how good is that, I love my coverpro and now I’m going to love it even more! Thanks Allison for sharing this and while you were more serious - how else would you be when you’re imparting knowledge, I found everything you said so easy to understand. I’m going to have to raid my stash and try out all you’ve explained now, it’s going to be fabulous and so quick by comparison. 🌹❤️

    Found your U Tube on shirring very helpful. I have a combination overlocker / cover machine too, but when I used the cover machine chain stitch for shirring recently, I found it to be very non-stretchy compared to using a bobbin with shirring elastic on an ordinary BERNINA. Any hints?

    • @SewLikeDotty
      @SewLikeDotty  Рік тому

      Hi it’s defiantly tighter with the coverstitch I don’t tent to steam it. I find it best when doing a big piece then cutting the bodice from that

    Hi Alison, loved seeing your video and immediately went to try it on my babylock. Tried several times and also rethreaded a couple of times. When i start it goes allright, but after a couple of stitches, or sometimes a row, the upperthread doesn't catch the elastic anymore. Any idea what the reason could be?

    • @SewLikeDotty
      @SewLikeDotty  Рік тому

      Was that coverstitch - the only thing that happens with mine sometimes is the elastic doesn’t come off the spool as easily as it should I just release it x

    Greta video Alison, I'm still yet to try shirring. I don't have a coverstitch, but will give it a go on my sewing machine at some point.
    How do you know how much fabric to use for a bodice?? Also do you usually cut too pieces of fabric, one for the back and one for the front?? Xx

    • @SewLikeDotty
      @SewLikeDotty  2 роки тому +1

      The dress I make is 2 rectangles 1 front and 1 back but I just join it together and shirr it as 1 piece
      Generally people say 1.5 x your measurements I tend to leave a little extra you can run the seams in if needed
      Some use a rectangle for the sleeves but the gbsb pattern has sleeve heads and I like that shape
      Will drop you a message from the group x

    I have tried shirring with both of my machines and with several types of elastic thread. I never was able to get the tension right because I get no real stretch at all I spent days and gave up and just put in lines of narrow elastic instead.

  • @beccab6568
    @beccab6568 2 місяці тому

    How did you finish off your rows to keep them from unraveling? Same as for regular chainstitch or is something else required? I want to shirr a waistband on some lightweight (challis) pants instead of creating channels and threading thin elastic through.

    • @SewLikeDotty
      @SewLikeDotty  2 місяці тому

      On the flat just chained off as that’s ok with babylock - I can’t remember what I did in the round just ended the row as I normally would adjust the thread and pull out I think

      Elastic through the looper and regular thread in the needle mine has auto tension so I don’t adjust anything there. At the end of the row trim the threads but hang on to the elastic so it doesn’t ping back up the looper
