The first thing I think of is his warm, resonating tone and the way he makes you feel he is singing to you. The emotion he brings to a ballad is an experience and you are hooked from the first ‘Wait for me, wait for me.’
He is a singer/song writer/musician/producer/performer. He puts his heart and soul into every song. I've watched a few documentaries on Hall and Oates putting together a song together in the studio, I saw how the song Private Eyes first started and was turned into what it became, I also watched their true story and other bios. Although Daryl can exist as a singer/musician/performer on his own, the coming together with John was meant to become another thing altogether - Another entity of its own. They each came together and added their individual complementary talents to create the best selling duo of the 80's. Daryl isn't egotistical when it comes to his band. He knows they are important to the music. He also has a great ear and knows not to push his voice passed it's limits causing damage. He has to deal with any effects Lyme disease and age has had on his vocals, if any. He can take a song from any album and sing it live sometimes making it sound even better. I'm just a huge fan. I love to sing to Hall and Oates music. I recently have been delving deeper into their early music (70's) and later (90's). In 2018 John put out a solo album Arkansas and his memoirs called, A Change Of Seasons.
What I really like about Daryl's singing, apart from the sound of his voice, is his ability to sing extemporaneously at the end of a song - to play around with variations on the melody and words. For example, at the ending of 'Out of Touch'. I think he's one of the best singers in this respect.
I sing predominently Classic Rock live with our band, and my pre gig warm up songs are Daryl . He's the Man so much soul and to me you can't sing rock without Soul . So much can be learn't for Daryl for any singer regardless of genre . I wish more Rock singers would learn from him . He's the Man.
I think it would be very cool if you did a video comparing Daryl Hall's vocal technique now to his prime in the 70's and 80's when he was REALLY hitting the high notes. Nowadays he still goes for em, but you can tell he changes his technique a bit to "appear" to hit them. Great video, love that he's one you did in your series!
As you age your vocal chords change and your voice lowers. Those high falsetto notes were great, but his voice has other attributes now; there is more weight and depth and a different sexiness.
Ken!! thank you so much for covering Daryl Hall! He is my all time favorite vocalist and in my opinion he is a musical genius! I grew up on Hall & Oates. I think the vocal for “Do What You Want, Be What You Are” is the GREATEST male vocal ever laid down...ever!!!!!
That Daryls House episode was one of the first and the best. Smokey and Daryl are perfect together and should make an album together… if they havent already that I am not aware of.

Daryl has a beautiful voice and a deep soul he expresses the lyrics so well, and his musicianship is so professional, he loves music and he's got soul check out the O 'Jays and Todd Rondgren at Daryl's house they had a blast and the music was amazing I love it
Hearing Daryl Hall next to Smokey Robinson shows how great of a soul singer Daryl Hall really is. I love listening to Hall & Oats when I am tuning a PA system just to hear the dynamics of Daryl’s voice. Another really great white boy pop singer from days gone by is George Michael (RIP). No gazillions of plug ins. Just a really great singer!
I’ve watched many interviews with Daryl hall and I’ve heard him say, he really hates the term “Blue eyed Soul” I agree it does describe him but he wants to be known as just a soul singer. I just watched hall and Oates from either Jamaica or the Bahamas. Wow can he sing and I’d love to sound like him.
Kid or teen growing up to the hit machine that was Hall and Oats, to finding "The Musician's Disneyland" at Darryl's House.. the amount of love of music and free vocals is a gem!
Daryl Hall&Paul Rodgers are two of the best singers in rock. So was Freddie Mercury. Perfect pitch. Perfect breath control. Individual style. Totally excellent! And if you haven't yet seen the Ceelo Green/Daryl Hall doing "Fuck You" and "One On One," those are both absolute life changers.
I admire Daryl's voice control, his smooth transitions. Great vocalist! ~ Also, recently heard a clip of John's bluegrass... It's cool to hear him do a completely different style. He sounds very natural with it! ~ I also enjoy your crisp voice. It's also quite strong. I bet you could sing a football stadium with no mic! Lol
That was a great video Ken Tamplin!! Hall and Oates is probably one of my favorite bands of all time and they have made so many amazing songs!! I think you should do a video on either Brad Delp from Boston or Terry Kath from Chicago.
DHs backing vocals in INXS' Original Sin and Rolling Stones' Ruthless People are underrated. DHs Dreamtime was great! Everytime You Go Away is also great!

Don’t forget about the other serious talent and Daryl s arranger Tom Tee Bone Wolk. I thought he was just a great bass player but he also plays acoustic and sings great back up. He will be missed from this world.
This is the kind of music I can listen to with folks that we both enjoy. For some strange reason when I put on some Pantera I get that mom look. You all know what that is
The 80's produced such a renaissance of music - from new wave to hair-metal and all points in between of which Hall and Oates were a part - Darryl has such a good voice... good music and good times.... thanks for posting, Sir Ken of Tamplin !!

I do like Daryl Hall, but it was a bonus to see Smokey! He's a favorite of mine and I got to meet him a couple of times--such a humble and warm guy for a Living Legend. I think you should point out that the singers in Smokey's generation did not have advanced vocal training like singers today. I have come to feel that good singers today are a dime a dozen and am less and less impressed by good singers (compare the contestants of the first few years of American Idol to those of the last few years). I do enjoy singers who have unique, identifiable voices.
Guitarist Robert Fripp, who collaborated with him in the late 1970s and early 1980s, has written, "Daryl's pipes were a wonder. I have never worked with a more able singer." ~ Wikipedia
thanks for showing this Ken. Wonderful tone. Speaking of Blue eyed soul....Bobby Hatfield invented it. I would love to see you react to him. But in his own right, Daryl is pure Gold. Makes it look easy, which it isn't.
Ken, do you remember the song Lonesome Loser by The Little River band? I'd love to hear your rendition on that song. Heard it this morning watching the movie, "The Loved One's". Crazy movie. It opens with a high school kid and his dad in the car while the dad is singing along to Lonesome Loser. I loved that song in my early teens. Lol 😆

Just discovered this awesome channel and I´m binging all the videos now. Keep pumpin' them out cause I´ll run out! Suggestion: Soda Stereo's Gustavo Cerati
First of all I have a feeling I'm going to like this series of videos. Thanks for talking about Daryl Hall. In my house we also like Smokey Robinson and my mom I believe has some of his records. I just can't remember which ones at the moment. I think about all those hits you mentioned as well, "Out of Touch" and so on. I also happen to live in Philadelphia (not in the same area as where he grew up) but Daryl of course went to Temple University where he met his singing partner so it's just awesome to live in a city that has an important Hall and Oates connection. 7:10 Ken: "wouldn't you like to be in a cafe hearing this stuff?" Me: Yes, I would.
I love Daryl Hall! I’ve seen him in concert with John Oates a dozen times throughout the years. I know he hates his music being referred to as blue eyed soul. He’s talked about it on talk shows before. He grew up in Philly and soul was soul. What makes him special to me is his looks LOL! That, and his songwriting and beautiful voice with all the textures. His high range is nearly gone now due to age but he still sounds great. Smokey’s voice has gone downhill as he has aged but it’s rare when singers’ voices don’t fade. He needed your course to learn how to preserve his voice. My two cents worth.
its interesting to hear you speak & see your enthusiasm about people doing their thing. We like them, & its fun to find out more about what they do. DH is great 🎶
Private Eyes and Maneater were the first songs by Hall & Oates that I have ever heard. I really enjoy both songs. I have even managed to learn how to play the Saxophone solo for Maneater! It's a very fun solo to play!
I remember being young enough that when I heard the name Hall & Oates, my little kid mind thought it was one person named Holland Oates, lol. Safe to say, they were a staple of my life courtesy of my parents and I thank them for that.
Thanks Ken for explaining his vocal range and how he goes about using his voice. Was very interesting to hear your breakdown of how he sings. I never thought of it and that's why he's so great. I can't remember which manager, very famous, said that Benny mardones had the greatest voice since he heard Daryl Hall. In other words, Daryl Hall's voice was so great he had not heard another great voice until he heard Benny sing. So that's a real big deal for Benny and for Daryl. Oh I wish I could remember who said it.
One can only hope Daryl will start this series again. He had a falling out with the town he lived in. I figured that had something to do with the end of the recording. I hope he lands somewhere he would want to start again.
It could have been Hall & Tamblin cuz your adlibs fitted right in. I had to look and see when it was you or them singing. I love I Can't Go For That. And you could also do Michael Macdonald. I love everything about the song Keep Forgetting & it has been sampled so many times in rap songs.
Ken its so true the point you made regarding how musicians use to let a song breath. This was such a special thing that was part and parcel at one given time which is unfortunately not done so anymore in today's music. So much can be learned in those "breakdowns" when the music is just "stewing" Ah man there's just no music being made like this anymore and it's such a tragedy in my opinion. I can't thank you enough for your vast wisdom regarding music in general. Thank you so much my friend!
One of my earliest memories is my mom listening to Hall and Oats and singing along to this song. I always thought it was played just for me. Lots of songs with the name “Sara,” but this one I consider mine (even though they spell it wrong 😉). This version is amazing and still feels personal.
Thank the Righteous Bros. for Daryll. I love the time Ojays went to his House, and they were doing Love Train. He offers to chime in on harmony, tells these bad dudes he'll find a part. They look at him skeptically. Song commences, he picks some tasty R&B harmony chops, and adds for good measure at the end: "I told you!", as if to say, "You expected the Ofays, and got more of the Ojays"! Remember also his Temptations connection without which the writer of My Girl probably wouldn't be sitting there; this means his education in the David Ruffin school of Rock n Roll/ R&B, to the point where Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks took the stage with the "Class Act" of Hall & Oats.
Thanks for the suggestion, Patricia! I wanted you to know that UA-cam no longer sends email notifications about new releases. If you would like to know when a new video is going to drop you can sign up to receive updates at: kentamplinvocalacademy.com/get-notified/
I thought Hall and Oates were so corny when I was a kid, wearing my "Appetite for Destruction" t-shirt and trying to be cool. But grown up now, I'm a huge fan of Live at Daryl's House. Guy has a killer voice on him.
Omg all that love - Maurice Wright - Eartth Wind & Fire, was the one that started it all in the 70s , my first song live , Reasons trust me I have a falsetto that brakes glass! So people cried actually , I still do it live today! Fabulous thank you ....looking great Ken blessings 🥁 PS You have an artist thumb do you draw ? I notice everything trained! 😊
Darryl sounds in a very subtle way like he has distortion in his voice, just a very subtle raspy/distortion in his voice, the subtleness is like tasting a bourbon and picking out certain flavors, lol
Nice analysis! Was trying to figure out who the Clarence was that you referred to for Sara Smile. The one musician that died relatively recently was the producer Christopher Bond, who Leland Sklar mentioned on his YT channel last month. He may have been instrumental in getting that sound. Leland had good things to say about Bond as I recall, but H&O dropped him (or eventually her) after The Beauty on the Backstreet album, which they admit was their least favorite in all their discography. Btw, Leland Sklar was the bassist for that album
I think it was Tom “T-Bone” Wolk you may have been thinking of. He was their bass player for decades. He’s in this video as Musical Director and lead guitar. Daryl and John referred to him as the “&” in Hall & Oates. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack a year or so after this. An incredibly talented musician and an amazing person. 😇
A while ago on my H&O fanpage channel a made a vocal evolution video for Daryl, I feel like you or your viewers would be interested in it since you can see some of his best vocal moments and how his voice has changed over the years, here it is: ua-cam.com/video/7obCCYRDCMs/v-deo.html
The first thing I think of is his warm, resonating tone and the way he makes you feel he is singing to you. The emotion he brings to a ballad is an experience and you are hooked from the first ‘Wait for me, wait for me.’

Daryl is definitely one that brings up a lot of chest in his vocals. I love that about him. You can hear it in the "We are the world" tune or his covers. He has a rich, resonant voice. I believe his mom was a voice teacher.
Thanks for listening!
Yes his mom was a vocal teacher.
Daryl was also a music teacher, at least for a little while, prior to forming Whole Oats with John in 1970. He was a music education major at Temple.
Hall and Oates, to me; are so unique. They’ve always stood out. Great songwriters. Killer voices. Hall looks 35-40 and he’s what pushing 70? He seems also to have great repertoire and peer respect. Love those guys.
Yeah, he looks great!! He's a busy guy, it appears to agree with him.
Daryl will be 75 this October 2021.
Always loved Hall and Oates. Great tunes.
Me too!
I think Daryl Hall is one of the most in tune and complete singers of all time❤
Sara Smile is just the ultimate slow jam. LOVE IT!!!

I think that the best song for analize Daryl's voice Is the live versión of "wait for me" that apears in their Rock and Soul part 1 , greatest hits. Truly amazing.

It is!

Daryl Hall, Hall and Oats more familiar great songs with good story telling in the lyrics and nice to hear Daryl in that live performance
Vocality 👍👍👍
Daryl is pure soul and R&B; he feels every note and can sing various genres - just watch LFDH. BTW, Daryl hates that "blue-eyed soul" label.
DHs backing vocals in INXS' Original Sin and Rolling Stones' Ruthless People are underrated.
DHs Dreamtime was great! Everytime You Go Away is also great!
Thanks for mentioning his contributions! Cool!
Daryl co-wrote Ruthless People as well.
Daryl has a very unic sound of voice.
He sure does!
As a more hard rock/classic rock/ glam metal kinda guy, hall and oates popped out in the middle of nowhere, their groove and soul struck me, i like to add that R&B and soul to my rock taste. I really want to see Hall and Oates live. Maybe soon. Miss Daryl's House. Great episode and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
One word: effortlessness
He’s doing what the very fewest people on earth can do while making it look just pure easy and fun...
Ray Charles could do that too.
Stevie Wonder.
Prince.
Joe Cocker.
Boz Scaggs.
And Stevie Ray Vaughan id say too including guitar
These are who come to mind…sure there’s others.
Anyway I feel like Daryl (at 77 no less!) is up among these guys in having that magical inborn artistic gift.

John Oates is great too. Just give "Possession Obsession" a listen. Guy can throw down.
It would have been great if I was invited to sit in, watch and listen. 😁
This is the kind of music I can listen to with folks that we both enjoy. For some strange reason when I put on some Pantera I get that mom look. You all know what that is
I know exactly what you are talking about, Never Enough Cowbell!😆

Great example of "blue eyed soul." I would also love to hear your thoughts on Michael McDonald
Maybe one day.

I saw Hall and Oats live back in the day. They sounded studio perfect or the fooled me into thinking so. Good stuff. Thanks.
I'm sure they did! Thanks, Jeff!
His name is spelled Oates btw
Awesome!
What makes this singer great? Only everything!!
Thanks for listening! Rock on!
Songs from his solar plexus. Mom taught him well.
Daryl is fantastic!
Thanks for weighing in, Debbie!
its interesting to hear you speak & see your enthusiasm about people doing their thing. We like them, & its fun to find out more about what they do. DH is great 🎶
Thanks for listening!
Private Eyes and Maneater were the first songs by Hall & Oates that I have ever heard. I really enjoy both songs. I have even managed to learn how to play the Saxophone solo for Maneater! It's a very fun solo to play!
awesome, Wally Gon-Con!
I remember being young enough that when I heard the name Hall & Oates, my little kid mind thought it was one person named Holland Oates, lol. Safe to say, they were a staple of my life courtesy of my parents and I thank them for that.
Good job, mom and dad! Rock on, Dracus!
I think it was Tommy Mottola. Thank you.
@@kentamplin yes. Correct
Daryl HATES the blue eyed soul, Thang. LOL. But, I know where daryl "goes" when he adlibs...I do the same thing. I enjoyed...thank you.
One can only hope Daryl will start this series again. He had a falling out with the town he lived in. I figured that had something to do with the end of the recording. I hope he lands somewhere he would want to start again.
I hope so too, Jan!
they killing it
great react buddy
thanks
It could have been Hall & Tamblin cuz your adlibs fitted right in. I had to look and see when it was you or them singing. I love I Can't Go For That. And you could also do Michael Macdonald. I love everything about the song Keep Forgetting & it has been sampled so many times in rap songs.
Thanks, Princess Francois!
Ken..i dont know..but i very much love you!
💜💜💜
Ken its so true the point you made regarding how musicians use to let a song breath. This was such a special thing that was part and parcel at one given time which is unfortunately not done so anymore in today's music. So much can be learned in those "breakdowns" when the music is just "stewing" Ah man there's just no music being made like this anymore and it's such a tragedy in my opinion. I can't thank you enough for your vast wisdom regarding music in general. Thank you so much my friend!
My pleasure, Louis!
One of my earliest memories is my mom listening to Hall and Oats and singing along to this song. I always thought it was played just for me. Lots of songs with the name “Sara,” but this one I consider mine (even though they spell it wrong 😉). This version is amazing and still feels personal.
Sounds like a great memory, Sarah!
Love Hall and Oats! Their songs make me feel happy 😊. Was just thinking how much I love their songs last week while painting lol.
Heidi Stutzman 😃
It's Oates, not the breakfast food :)
I've seen that performance. It's great! He was right. "Told you!".
Daryl Hall is a musical genius!
Cover Daryl Halls "I'm in a philly mood".
Thanks for the suggestion, Patricia!

I thought Hall and Oates were so corny when I was a kid, wearing my "Appetite for Destruction" t-shirt and trying to be cool. But grown up now, I'm a huge fan of Live at Daryl's House. Guy has a killer voice on him.
ApplachiaMarv 👍
Nice piece Ken..... thanks
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Sgt. V!
Nice idea to do videos like these! I 've watched almost all of them. Ken please next do Tom Jones... Thanks..

@@kentamplin Great! Sorry I haven't noticed....
Thanks kelly! 👍
Darryl sounds in a very subtle way like he has distortion in his voice, just a very subtle raspy/distortion in his voice, the subtleness is like tasting a bourbon and picking out certain flavors, lol
Love smokie Robinson so awesome
Indeed!
Thanks for watching, Mount Light!
Thanks for sharing, Jayheartsjonas!
He and George Michael my favorite blue eyed soul of all time!
Lana Martin 👍
