As a Lexus Service Technician, I do agree on the new GX being poorly made and cut a lot of corners. I already seen a few common defects on these. Toyota/Lexus quality is just not there anymore sadly.

Interior is very fague, dash and door panel material is cheap. Many customers complain about squeak around the dash around due to plastic and dash material overlapping and rubber against each other. You can literally move the whole dash around.. All these new models look exactly the same interior wise

@Ghxst_Tx762 Thank you for your honest perspective as a Lexus Tech. That's means alot to the people on this channel. As a Tech, I'm sure you see 470s, 460s, 550s and many other legacy Lexus products daily... I'm sure you can clearly see the interior quality differences across the generations. I was and still am a proponent of Toyota/Lexus products... but the lack GX550 interior quality is simply objective unfortunately. As someone said, Lexus might be aiming for the "It's new and looks kewl!" market... will it work? Time will tell. But the 550 does not feel like a Lexus inside... the LX600 does...

Lexus isn’t stupid. A very tiny percentage of those who buy these new could care less what the approach angle is. They want it to look good, have good tech, handle inclement weather, and be reliable. It’s a specific group of people who buy them 10 years old for half or less of MSRP that care about that stuff.

I bought my 2023 GX460 in December of 2023, picking it up literally 2 days before Christmas.
I got a massive discount on it (about $15k off MSRP), and Factory 2.49% financing, which was about 5 point below prime rate, IIRC.

@@EchoTangoSuitcase I was on waitlist for the GX550. Don’t know why I did since I’m smarter than to buy first runs lol. I think I was just excited because I just sold my 4Runner. But when I finally got to see and test one out I loved the look but getting inside and driving it left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Just wasn’t impressed, then they told me about the mark up prices. I had doubts and didn’t purchase and as weeks went by more and more reviews came out and they were pretty much the same thoughts I had. Then the Tundra engine issue exploded and that affected the 550 sales and marketing a bit, atleast to those who do their homework. With all the hype on the 550 I started looking at the 460 in May and found one barely used for a month or so with only 2200 miles and saved $10k. I after first impressions on the 550 and getting in the 460, the 460 was a dramatic improvement inside and truly felt luxury while the 550 to me felt like a slightly nicer and newer version of my 4Runner.

Congrats! That interest rate is impressive to get. I also owned a 2023 GX 460 Luxury with Sport Package. It came with second row captain chairs and factory installed tow hitch. I got a great deal - $10k off MSRP. I got it for over a year now and had little over 7k miles. I didn’t wait that long because your choice and option will be limited to what the dealer has in stock. The lower trim like premium seems to be in higher stock than the Luxury trim.

I test drove a GX550 and it was pretty baller. The next day I took home a 23 GX460 😂
The spiritual successor in the US market at least to me jumping from the GX460 is the LX700H Overtrail.
What won’t make me buy one are the following:
    1. Forced Overtrail interior trim that is not as luxurious as the other interior choices on the other trim.
    2. Forced Hybrid model to access Overtrail specific trim.
    3. High price to segment the vehicle above a failed US “250” launch in the LC250 and GX550. Yes the LX700H barely eclipses pricing over a new LC200 of yesteryear, but customers will still lose out on specific off road/on road advantages such as omitting KDSS.
Aside from the disadvantages and price gouging for a lackluster modern off road offering, I am a fan of the increased articulation on the new models. The added electronic KDSS and technology inside is attractive.
I think where Toyota messed up was being lazy and using every SUV on the same platform. But I digress, get your 460s before it’s too late. It’s priced right and has just enough to keep you going for the next two decades. If the world market can somehow avoid the EV revolution and Toyota is forced to make the next generation land cruisers more akin to the 150, then us enthusiasts will have some hope for the future

Last August, I went in to pick up a 23 GX with 16k miles. There was a 550 on the lot, so I decided to test drive it, and oh man, I fell in love. The pull was a night and day difference. I just loved the quickness. I ended up buying an Overtrail+ in incognito. To be honest, luxury wise, it was the same, especially with the massage seats. They used darker wood trim, so it blends in more than a lighter wood. I love the look. These new ones are very capable just look up Dissent offroad and see what they did with this frame

Really enjoyed hearing your perspective and everything you said rings true. That said, I'm planning to grab a 2025 GX 550 OT when they hit dealers. The approach and departure angles do bum me out a bit. The extra inch of ground clearance and the factory installed air compressor are what have me waiting for the 25. I'm one of the guys that isn't prepared to stretch to pay $100k or $120k for a 300 GR Sport. $80-85K is pushing my comfort zone, so Overtrail is it for me. I've owned Wranglers, Defender 90s, Broncos and drove a 4Runner for 7 years. To me the Lexus will be a big upgrade in the comfort department and I could not care less about wood trim in the interior. I'm driving a new Bronco now, ha! I loved my 4Runner and to me the GX 550 OT is what the new 4Runner should have been plus plus. I'd say also the 550 looks a lot better than the 460, but that's me. I wish there was a front locker, but EKDSS has me excited and the 6 cyl engine felt real good when I went for a test drive. I'll be happy if Toyota gives you something to be more excited about and I'll have fun watching your future video.

to be fair everyone was fooled by Toyota because the _implication_ of TNGAF is same platform = same frame... as thing get rolling it's now evident that the LC250/GX550/Tacoma/25 4runner have compromises vs. LC300/LX600/Sequoia/LX700... different bumpstops (or missing).. different control arms... lighter frame materials... and what else is left to be discovered... it's fair to say Toyota isn't going out of their way to be forthright about TNGAF frame differences...

I always was super excited every time I saw a Land Cruiser 200 in the nearby dealerships show rooms while waiting for my Toyotas to be serviced. I always said - nothing can beat this thing, that's so classic and with new features at the same time. Until last times when I saw it in 2022. And price was very good starting 82,000 and ending in 90 something thousands for top trims, almost like an LX570. People didn't know what BS is coming with new generations. Or every time when I saw it on the highway always said - this person knows very well what he/she bought.

There is always some UA-cam edgelord saying this about the new generation of literally any car whenever it comes out, it's the most predictable cycle ever. Toyota comes out with the 5th gen 4Runner, "It's not a real 4Runner anymore because it doesn't have a V8 in it". Then the 6th gen comes out and then it's "LOL RIP, the last gen was the last real 4Runner because it had a NA V6 and now they're putting a 4 banger in it".
Cars get better and more efficient every year. The engine issues on the GX notwithstanding (don't buy the first gen of any car if you don't want to deal with potential recalls/wait for Toyota to iron out the kinks, and so far its been attributed to machining debris anyway, not a fault of the capabilities of the engine), it's a V6 that makes maximum torque at under 2k RPM and outperforms the outgoing engine in every way. The vast minority of people buying a GX care about literally anything other than "Does it fit in the Starbucks drive thru", In the same way that nobody, and I truly mean nobody, buying the new GX is going to be able to quote the breakover angle much less actually put it to use. Even 90% of the people who kit it out with rotopax, maxtrax and a widdle wadder aren't gonna do anything other than drive to and from the mall and occasionally on a paved campsite access road while they go "overlanding".
A Land Cruiser is whatever Toyota says it is. Just like the people screaming that a mid-engined Corvette "Isn't a real corvette anymore", or the new WRX isn't a WRX because they hate the styling. Progress marches ever onward and people who hate change stick their heads in the sand and insist that the model they bought is the last one that was ever worth anything. Lmao.

The Prado will get up to 25 mpg. My dealer’s brochure says it has KDSS on our luxury trim. Idk if you can take a look for me to make sure I’m not tripping. Because why would Toyota give our tiny little country KDSS and not have it on the US versions and Australian versions. My only guess is because Lexus is not officially sold here and we don’t get the GX. Hence we get the luxury Prado with the old school grille. Some markets also have rear seat entertainment in the roof in the back. Decisions decisions. Also none of our prado’s have a rear locker. Not base and not luxury grade. Simply just a center locker. Guessing Toyota sees that A-Trac embedded in MTS and Crawl is superior. Lol

From the very beginning Lexus/Toyota made a huge mistake introducing the 460 as a luxury vehicle, which it most definitely is not!
They compromised on the styling so much they almost ruined one of the best off-road vehicles of all time.
Fast forward to the 550,which is such a huge cost cutting let down it's almost insulting,to those who know. The younger generation will love the 550,those who know the 460 & know what real quality is, will be so angry , saddened & insulted by the new 550.

Do you really need KDSS when LX has AHC? I don't think so. I don't think a vehicle was ever produced with both systems present (feel free to correct me if that's not true). And yes, I know these are two very different systems, but I think they overlap in regards to anti-roll bar adjustability. Specifically I'm talking about the ability of AHC equipped trucks to adjust the damping force (both manually with a switch and actively through different sensors inputs) and the fact that left and right "shocks" are hydraulically connected. So there definitely is an effect overlapping KDSS to some extent with the bonus of height adjusment.

    • @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD
      @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD  23 дні тому +2

@aleksyanev ACH is "spring height adjustment" via airbags or hydraulic extension on the spring or rod extension via thr shocks
AVS is shock absorber oil flow adjustment
E-KDSS is a hydraulic swaybar disconnect via collapsing a hydraulic end link
Only e-kdss will disconnect the sway bar.. changing the ride height will never disconnect the sway bar and increase articulation... which is why the flagship LC300 GRS was engineered proudly with E-kdss... when Lexus go it they basically said "nobody will take the LX offroad so give it AHC instead"

    • @aleksyanev
      @aleksyanev 23 дні тому +1

@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD Correct, I should've used AVS, but instead I used "AHC" as an umbrella term for AHC & AVS. Left and right with AHC/AVS are hydraulically connected. Oil flow adjustment affects body roll, which is somewhat similar effect to stiffening/softening the swaybar. Total articulation between KDSS and AHC/AVS equpped trucks seems to be almost the same. Not making that up, I promise :) Lookup "Wheel Articulation with AHC vs. KDSS" on mud. A slight egde for KDSS.

Until demand and quality falls to a painful level, which it may, given current inflation, subpar quality (ie., engine failures, cheaper interior materials), greedy US market markups...Toyota/Lexus may not a course correction. Nissan/Infiniti was forced to make this correction - perhaps too late, absent Honda's support - but they have produced some promising new competition in the QX80, and especially the Armada Pro4x. Nissan obviously got the "memo" and have brought a true Patrol (with optional lockers) to the US. Maybe this will be enough to entice Toyota to bring the LC 300 (GR) to the USA. One can only hope...

I agree with you on all points of the GX 550. I don't find it Lexus like at all. I picked on that the moment I saw it at the Washington Auto Show. It lacks refinement everywhere. I also find that the fact that the seats don't fold flat and even is terrible. It's like an 8 to 10 inch drop behind the second row seat when it's down. Plus the third row is as worthless as in all GX vehicles. I keep mine in the down position so it might as well not exist. Your second GX460 video 3 years ago addressed the very same insufficient approach angle as on the GX460 when you 🌮 it, so I have to say nothing new here and if anything lets call that point a draw with the new GX. With regards to interior luxury I think we all have to agree that the GX 460 takes the point there vs the OT, but in all honesty I think you have stated that you have never even washed the interior of your GX so is that really even a valid issue? GX broke out the Luxury trim level and made the OT somewhat more purpose built while still upscale. I thinks that the OT and OT+ is fine... clearly more luxurious than the McLand Cruiser and the 4Walker. Price... well it's priced to perfection it's true that it's fair game to be selective and critical for this kind of money. The LC is definitely 10-15k overpriced and a better comp isn't the previous LC300, but the FJ Cruiser. Toyota should at least give the base model the off-road drivetrain options and trail cameras. The LX 600h OT is missing KDSS otherwise that would be the ichiban model at almost $120k. Keep up the good work, and I'm looking forward to buying a GX550 OT for my dirt roads and steep driveway on the AZ side of the Mohave desert...just not looking forward to that price. Do you have a Highlander nice Prius. They looked at me totally confused and I stated well it’s on the same platform isn’t it? And of course they said oh yeah it is I guess. Obviously I was just proving satire at the moment, but it shows that just because a company says it’s on the same platform doesn’t really mean anything. The QX 60 is a unit body when they say platform they basically mean the struts and suspension components and that’s really it. Like you said, those who’s owned a Lexus will know the difference and should be smart and informed enough to stay away and not fall for it and those who’s never owned a Lexus might be “wow’d” and like it purely based on its exterior looks. Regardless of approach angle or whether you off road or not, the GX550 is such a “cut cost” rip off vehicle for consumers. So many quality issues and very questionable engine reliability that will surely arise in the future. I don’t expect this vehicle along with many new Toyota trucks and SUV’s to last like the older generations. Unless you lease it stay away!

The newer model uou mention will come vloser to $100k. Then all people will complain about the price. Personally I like gx550 and wished it was $10k cheaper but most cars now a days are $50k out the door.
I have put my deposit for scout traveller. Toyota is too slow with the EV game. I know a lot of folks dont like EVs but most probably they never driven one.

I really wish they just the 300 series. Lexus design language is just so ugly and gaudy but the cars are great.

I agree. I'm not at all interested in the new Land Cruiser or GX. My 19 GX is such a nicer vehicle.

Today I saw a 550 and a bronco sport next to it. From the side they had almost identical profiles. Boring

@ for us commoners, what would you suggest we move to if we can’t afford Lx nor 550?
      Find a 4Runner 5th gen with KDSS or 460?
