Moses Schneider: Drums With Character
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 чер 2024
- This month we step into the studio of Berlin-based engineer, producer and author Moses Schneider. Moses got his big break working at the famous Hansa Tonstudio with Pixies and has since worked with big-selling German acts Kreator and Tocotronic. He has also worked with The Strokes’ producer, Gordon Raphael, who calls him “the Einstein of live recording.”
In our video he talks about his approach to production, and demonstrates how he records and processes drums to give them the most character - and specifically about the intriguing ‘wurst’ mic technique.

"You get some control but you lose some music" is an incredible statement, what a legend
What a cool guy, no diva behaviour, just true love for music, refreshing !!
Never seen an audio professional laugh so often and have so much fun. Moses teach me audio!!!
Today I spent a few hours with Moses at his studio and man, this guy is such a pure soul.Extremely competent yet humble,I would love to work with him again
"maybe you took the wrong drugs, i dont know!" what a funny character, i like his philosophy on recording/mixing as well!
This man is incredible...what passion for his art...using simple techniques to create magic.
Ein musikalisches Genie mit einem so großartigen Charakter. So was gibt's (leider) viel zu selten auf diesem Planeten.
He has published an e-book called The Alternative Workbook - Or How To Pimp Your Practice Room, where he gives practical tips on how to make professional recordings in the rehearsal room.
Tracktour Music Library thanks!!
I love this guy! Can you imagine how much fun it would be to be his assistant! Hearing him say 'I love it' everyday ha!
Seems like a really genuine guy. This is what we all should aim for IMO.
This was really great to listen to and watch. The gent really loves his life and his work. It has kept him young it seems. The part about recording "CREATOR" and that them being a 25 year old band who are fun to work with for when you record an old band like that who have been with each other since their teens meant that you can really hear "friendship"... dyamn that was deep.
it's "Kreator" btw
Super-inspiring this video, because I guess everybody is fighting to record drums at home in a small room. I actually prefer this sound to 80s-90s big room, bombastic, roomy drums. This is how rock drums ought to sound like.
Can we have a list of songs used in this video? They're all so killer! Are these all Moses work?
He really wraps it up at about 28 minutes onward. Police, AC/DC, "You can listen to the friendship!" 1st chorus/2nd chorus. What a great perspective.
Everybody needs more Wurst in there music Moses! Great video and such a great guy!!!
I've been watching amazing recording engineers and producers on youtube and all of them are amazing but this guy is the only one I would really really want to meet and get a beer while talking about music!!!!!!!
His recordings are simply amazing, He is like a modern day Phil Spector.
soulagent79 minus the whole murder thing.
@@jamiedavie91 lol
First sound engineer I saw blowing smoke on his equipment.
You don't know Lee scratch Perry ?
@@eugenielama981 hahahaha... good one!
Hell yes! A KREATOR shot out. This is the best interview/insight from producer/engineer ever. So glad I stumbled across this.
I really enjoy Moses' attitude; A refreshing take on recording.
I recorded my band this summer. We played the music live, a second guitar and vocals overdub. I, as the drummer, was the only one that had a click playing in my headphones. It helped soooo much in the editing phase because I could align the individual takes of one song and comp every mistake out. The feeling is still there and it was fairly easy to work with.
+klick2destruct Yea i don't think this guy is a musician all the best bands recorded final takes to sequencer tracks or some kind of metronome
+ConcreteKOS He is definitely a music lover though. That might mean more. Musicians are sometimes blind [or in this case, deaf] to certain "inconsistencies".
well, many musicians don't really know what they are doing. for me as a drummer it was kind of a natural step to start recording myself. recording and producing sound is a difficult and very broad topic that involves as much physics as creative freedom. IMO a clicktrack doesn't really make or break a record. it just makes it easier to work with and many people (including myself) are used to a steady groove.
klick2destruct Yea I think that not needing a click is probably reserved for super tight bands that have been together for years and know each other really well. The dynamic gives the sound something that you can't get with click. However this doesn't mean that not using click will give you this level of synergy. Again he said "you can really hear friendship" when advocating for no click. You know for that "live sound".
One word for Moses Schneider. Awesome!!!!! 👍😎
What an enthusiastic and talented guy!
I love just how happy and smiley he is talking about music
This guy is absolutely brilliant! Real wisdom in the digital age about getting character out of recordings
His passion for music is infectious :)
"Whatever it is... Wow! Let's distort it!" Love this guy!! 👍🏼
How incredible is to see him enjoy what he do so much, so much PASSION in what he is doing, is pretty remarkable yet inspiring at the same time!
What a chill nice guy

Very cool! I love the rant against tracking separately and using a click track, so right!
Love his attitude. This is brilliant!
What a lovely chap - really infectiously enthusiastic.
Nice to meet Moses. This open minds are so enjoyable.
Amazing interview. Please do more with Moses, i would love to hear him talk about vocals and drums specially.
That gated 'wurst' mic is so good. Cool video
Absolutely wonderful

What a great guy I ,love his passion for creativity ,would love to work with him
such a bright guy!
holy shit - those distorted tracks - in a way liberating how unconventional approaches & thinking out of the box will lead to interesting stuff.
This guy is too nice, awesome!
lol the 'Wurst' microphone …:) love it
8:38 this is the 'crotch mic' set up. Love it! I use this method on my recordings lots of times. It just works!
Perfect imperfection.
such a cool guy! very inspiring
Not actually the sound I'm producing, but awesome tipps and a very smooth guy! Cool :D
"wurst mic" - love it ;)
Wow!! It’s just awesome!! So much ways to make music!!
What a great attitude.
He rocks... A real love for music...
One of the best videos on youtube.
that was awesome. i just learned oodles. best 30 minutes of advice
im 100% with the click theory. I've experienced that already .
I had the same feeling as him regarding quantization. I mean, especially a live band. You want them to create the energy. Let them dictate their own tempo and feel. If it's a bad take, then it's a bad take. Maybe they need to practice more, or get the arrangement down better.
Amazing video
Well this was enlightening
i wanna do coke with this guy
fuckin top man, hilarious
...and dance!
He'd prefer weed tho, at least he did when I worked with him 20 yeras ago :D
He's a music producer, you know he definitely smokes weed
Working with my first band called 'Gentle View' at Ulli Weigel's Sinus Tonstudio back in the day surely must have been one of his very first productions, maybe the first one? ;-)
What a wonderful dude
Great Mighty Boosh episode! Thanks.
"wurst" Wish i thought of that one. Moses comment/s on- Stimulate the recording artists, in headphone mix.. Absolutely!!. going to try the Wurst mic technique on my drums tomorrow, i have done similar but not such a close sound....cant wait!! i love using gates and compression.. is the way i like it..
Ein so toller Trick, echt super Moses :-)
This dude is great, speaking the truth!
Just saw this for the first time, this guy is totally cool.
he seems honest!!
Such a nice guy!
This seriously kicks ass.
Awesome lad!
This guys enthusiasm reminds me of the passion in Jodorowksy when talking about 'his Dune'.
Really liked the video.
This cat is one jovial Deutcher! Great stuff, thanks!
Superb, I love this. I think I may have misheard the mic positioning instructions at 8:22 . If not, I'm going to try small diaphragm condenser first.
i love this guy!
I will never stop watching this video.
Fun stuff Moses! 🥰🥰🥰😘😘😘
had never heard of this guy...first impression "who did he produce for? I bet he worked with the pixies" I always loved there drum sound. somehow I was right.
