Today I spent a few hours with Moses at his studio and man, this guy is such a pure soul.Extremely competent yet humble,I would love to work with him again
He has published an e-book called The Alternative Workbook - Or How To Pimp Your Practice Room, where he gives practical tips on how to make professional recordings in the rehearsal room.
This was really great to listen to and watch. The gent really loves his life and his work. It has kept him young it seems. The part about recording "CREATOR" and that them being a 25 year old band who are fun to work with for when you record an old band like that who have been with each other since their teens meant that you can really hear "friendship"... dyamn that was deep.
I've been watching amazing recording engineers and producers on youtube and all of them are amazing but this guy is the only one I would really really want to meet and get a beer while talking about music!!!!!!!
Super-inspiring this video, because I guess everybody is fighting to record drums at home in a small room. I actually prefer this sound to 80s-90s big room, bombastic, roomy drums. This is how rock drums ought to sound like.
I recorded my band this summer. We played the music live, a second guitar and vocals overdub. I, as the drummer, was the only one that had a click playing in my headphones. It helped soooo much in the editing phase because I could align the individual takes of one song and comp every mistake out. The feeling is still there and it was fairly easy to work with.
+ConcreteKOS He is definitely a music lover though. That might mean more. Musicians are sometimes blind [or in this case, deaf] to certain "inconsistencies".
well, many musicians don't really know what they are doing. for me as a drummer it was kind of a natural step to start recording myself. recording and producing sound is a difficult and very broad topic that involves as much physics as creative freedom. IMO a clicktrack doesn't really make or break a record. it just makes it easier to work with and many people (including myself) are used to a steady groove.
klick2destruct Yea I think that not needing a click is probably reserved for super tight bands that have been together for years and know each other really well. The dynamic gives the sound something that you can't get with click. However this doesn't mean that not using click will give you this level of synergy. Again he said "you can really hear friendship" when advocating for no click. You know for that "live sound".
You are really amazing and driven by your passion to your art thank you for your insight into your personnel creative process, well done and keep up the great work.
"wurst" Wish i thought of that one. Moses comment/s on- Stimulate the recording artists, in headphone mix.. Absolutely!!. going to try the Wurst mic technique on my drums tomorrow, i have done similar but not such a close sound....cant wait!! i love using gates and compression.. is the way i like it..
Working with my first band called 'Gentle View' at Ulli Weigel's Sinus Tonstudio back in the day surely must have been one of his very first productions, maybe the first one? ;-)
had never heard of this guy...first impression "who did he produce for? I bet he worked with the pixies" I always loved there drum sound. somehow I was right.
I had the same feeling as him regarding quantization. I mean, especially a live band. You want them to create the energy. Let them dictate their own tempo and feel. If it's a bad take, then it's a bad take. Maybe they need to practice more, or get the arrangement down better.
Names of both songs? Second one is a Tocotronic tune, but don't know which one. On the first tune there's no info in the video, but that drums are huge so I need to listen to the whole piece! Help me!
"You get some control but you lose some music" is an incredible statement, what a legend
What a cool guy, no diva behaviour, just true love for music, refreshing !!
Never seen an audio professional laugh so often and have so much fun. Moses teach me audio!!!

This guy is absolutely brilliant! Real wisdom in the digital age about getting character out of recordings

+klick2destruct Yea i don't think this guy is a musician all the best bands recorded final takes to sequencer tracks or some kind of metronome

Damn that drum beat got me pumping with the Wurst mic
One word for Moses Schneider. Awesome!!!!! 👍😎
He really wraps it up at about 28 minutes onward. Police, AC/DC, "You can listen to the friendship!" 1st chorus/2nd chorus. What a great perspective.
Moses is a legend. Epic dude! Love this vid. Love his stoke for music.
Very cool! I love the rant against tracking separately and using a click track, so right!

Superb, I love this. I think I may have misheard the mic positioning instructions at 8:22 . If not, I'm going to try small diaphragm condenser first.
