Just popping to say that vacuum sealing wool might not be the best idea for long term storing as wool breathes, absorbs and releases moisture as needed so storing it in non breathable storage might lead to it molding... If it's only for a season it's probably fine but too long might degrade the fiber. Thanks for all your amazing videos.
All of this seemed excessive untill I thought again how much time, effort and money in good quality yarn and it totally makes sense. Those are beautiful knits (and yess vintage clothes dereve special care like hell yes they do). I never know how to dry hand washed stuff living in my tiny dorm room so I mostly hold off on pure non superwash wool for now haha I hope you are well now and managed to fight off covid well!
It also is really good for knits out of synthetic yarns to hand wash them by hand. The piece looks like new longer, there are less knots and stray strands. The downside is that you either have to wear something under syntehtic knits (to keep sweat/body oils out of the fabric) or to wash them more than half a year.

Years ago my friends mother told me that the easiest way to dry sweats was to hang them on the line with an old pair of pantyhose. You put the pantyhose in the sweater with the legs coming out the arms and waist coming out the neck then attached the pantyhose to the clothes line. It works really well and they don’t stretch out you can even sort of block them. I’ve been using this technique for both handmade and industrial made for years it works really well and cuts down the drying time.

Clip the waistline of the pantyhose on the clothesline and the toes out each side. It takes up a lot of line. The sweater looks like a T hanging from the pantyhose. They dry super fast with a great air flow. Hope that makes more sense! My friends mother would be pleased to know her wisdom lives on!
I do my hand laundry in a basement laundry room, using the old-fashioned laundry sink and a few plastic wash basins. But the hot water tap on the laundry sink broke almost ten years ago so the water is so cold it burns. I started wearing rubber gloves which helps, but I still procrastinate hand laundry more than I should.
I found that when drying sweater, aiming a box fan towards the sweaters makes them dry faster. The air circulation helps evaporate the water. I don't have that wrack so I'd lay them on a towel on the floor with the fan blowing on them. It kept my thicker sweaters from smelling like an old towel. I'd also flip the sweaters.

Another thing that can help things dry is pointing a fan at them; even just a teeny bit of air movement helps them dry faster. Also, thanks for the reminder that it's probably time to put away my heavy knits for the warmer weather!

I’m Australian so I use tea tree oil wool wash. Bugs hate tea tree oil. It’s also a disinfectant. I don’t put as much care as you do into my knits though. I wash them on a delicate cycle in my machine but I do avoid washing them unless they’re smelly and I dry flat

One of the best soaps I have found for my woolens is Tufts. The bars last forever (I've had mine for over a year now) and you can lather some in a basin of water for a soak or use it directly on the fabric for stain removal or spot cleaning.

The good old sweater burrito! XD I like to sandwich larger pieces between two towels and then roll, I've found that it helps to get a lot more of the water out and really speeds up drying time, especially for larger and/or thicker pieces. It's so fun seeing how other people care for their handmade items. Love the little sachets you made for repelling pests!
I saw another video and I was wondering if I could use my regular detergent rather than the special one for hand knitted stuff. So glad I saw your video! Love the scent bags ❤

Only been well for about 6-8 weeks all together! So this year's been really frustrating for me so far. 😓

Arne and Carlos are Norwegian knitter/designers on UA-cam and they don’t wash wool sweaters. They hang the sweater outside to air out. They only “wash” if something has spilled on it. Check them out 🤶🏽

How would you go about baby/young child sweaters, which needs to be washed much more often due to getting physically dirty? My 8 month old especially, he gets his VERY dirty with.. well.. everything.
One reason for putting sweaters (and yarn and garments in general) in the freezer is to kill any bugs that may be in the fiber, especially ones you can't see such as mites and carpet beetles that could destroy natural fibers. I've seen advice ranging from freezing one day to one week. Some advice also recommends freezing, thawing, and freezing again to kill any bugs that would be able to survive freezing in a dormant period.

Why add vinegar?
It kills moth eggs, so no chemicals are needed.
It’s also a good fabric softener.
