I said this before, this is best in class guys. Very rare to get such insight from a member. Most are associates who can discuss a crew, quickly run out of stories and then start attacking each other. Michael is a wealth of information and a gentleman. Very refreshing. This show and John Panissi's are both head and shoulders above the rest. When can I join his patreon to listen to Michael's stories??

Hey, Roger and Michael, I grew up in Chicago in an Italian American family. My parents were originally in New York after coming over, then came to Chicago. I still have relatives in New York and I have been going back-and-forth every two or three years when I was little through my teens, and still go in my adult life with my own family. I believe I read somewhere joe massino said he wanted guys to make their sons because they'd be more trustworthy but also because he thought it would stop people from cooperating. That if a guy went into witness protection he could retaliate(implied or not) on the father or the son, whichever one he could still get to.

Many would argue that the transition in Sicily -- between the violent frenzy of Riina, to the more business-oriented and "quiet approach" of Provenzano -- only made Cosa Nostra more dangerous than ever. They were no longer dealing with international endeavors (drug-trafficking), became able to focus more at-home, and because Provenzano wasn't greedy with the sharing of POWER -- not just funds -- the families across Sicily became happier than ever. Many would also argue, that with the smooth transition from Provenzano to the new boss -- Matteo Messina Denaro -- it only helped further emphasize the future of Cosa Nostra in Sicily... It will remain integral and part of Sicily -- for better or worse -- for as long as Sicily continues to exist...
P.S. Some guys who escaped from Riina's wrath did make their way into the Gambinos, but they also made their way into a few of the other families too... Like the Bonannos. All and all, they were referred to "gli' scappati" aka "The escapees" in Italian lol

Hello RJ and Michael hope you both are well. Great content as always. I have a pretty long question and asking for some possible clarity of timeline of events if both of you could possibly weigh in. Now in my understanding Giuessepe Morello was the first known Mafia member to emigrate to the U.S. through New Orleans in 1881 but was extradited back to Italy after killing some landowners. But then it says in 1892 Morello must have come back but this time to East Harlem and form "The Morello Gang" or truly the 1st family in La Cosa Nostra "The Genovese Family" So first question what happened between 1881 and 1892 in Morello's life and how was he allowed back to the U.S. Now fast forward a bit to Masseria/Maranzano times but before the Castellamarese War in 1931. Do we know of any input of who and whom were at certain Omerta ceremonies? Such as Luciano, Gambino, Genovese, Profaci, etc. Any input of any accounts of ceremonies you guys might know of would be interesting to hear. Mikey - you touched on it briefly, but I would love to hear more about how relations worked with Sicilian Cosa Nostra. According to Selwyn Raab, when the Commission was formed in 1931, a rule against double membership between the US and Sicily was brought in. And I think I read you saying there was a rule against double membership in an article a few years back. So when, as RJ mentioned, the guys came over from Sicily fleeing the war there in the 80s, and some joined up with you guys, were none of them made “on the other side”? You read even today that links between the Gambinos and the Sicilian Inzerillos are strong. And also, what about relations with the other Italian mafias - the Camorra and ‘Ndranghetta, from Naples and Calabria? Are they viewed the same was as Sicilian Cosa Nostra? Or does American Cosa Nostra consider the relations with the Sicilians as stronger? Thanks man 🙏

Great show. I think there have always been some members coming in without heritage. Given that American Cosa Nostra came out of the Sicilian Honored Society, only Sicilians could have heritage originally. So all the mainland Italians who joined did not have heritage originally. And the likes of Lucky Luciano, who was Sicilian, was not descended from people in the life. He even came up running with mainland Italians and Jews. Joe “The Boss” Masseria was Sicilian, but apparently not descended from the life. According to Mike Dash in his book The First Family, as early as the 1910s the Morello Family (formed by Mafioso from the Sicilian town of Corleone, later to become the Masseria/Luciano/Genovese Family) was recruiting members from outside Corleone, and even outside Sicily (Eugene Ubriaco, a Calabrian, was in a senior position by the time of the Mafia-Camorra War of 1914). So some outsiders were being brought in from the very beginning of the American Mafia.

The Donnie Brasco situation is interesting in that no one seemed to check out his family background, I mean in the book I think he just says he was an orphan but if he was actually going to be proposed (which might be debatable), surely that would have come up. Then again the 70s/80s were much different than the 40s/50s. Excellent show fellas.
Edit to Add: there is an interesting symposium of sorts of an academic woman from the Calabrian region giving a presentation on what they know (or think they know) about the N'Dranghetta and they spoke out the stages they use which includes a lot of inner family stuff like bringing kids in and assimilating in new countries and marrying into local families there and having their children brought into the life to try to keep things extremely tight. All of that sort of goes back to the old Monarchy days of Europe where the royal families all married cousins and what not who were royalty in other countries (I guess the thinking was it would keep their position stronger), whereas having family only these days theoretically might cut down on snitching.
Then again in the 80s and 90s weren't bosses wanting to have sons straightened out so if the father was thinking about ratting then the son would potentially be in danger?
