Sadly, Mike's distant cousins from all over Europe (Michail from the USSR, Mikael from Denmark, Mika from Finland, Michel from France, Michalis from Greece, Mikkel from Norway, Michele from Italy, Michał from Poland, Mihai from Romania, Mykolas from Lithuania and Miguel from Spain) didn't want to participate.^^
For another couple of this tune, try Glen's Smokin' one (stick with it to at least 2:28) ua-cam.com/video/GUBhE00h9U0/v-deo.html , and the Schmutzdorfers (it was them playing, not those you see) ua-cam.com/video/dwhGlrZOfFI/v-deo.html (I now _expect_ the baby at 1:02!).
This was 1977. The multi-layering seen here was nothing new at the time, people had been doing it on videotape since VT was invented in the 1950s (and of course on film for a very long time before *that*), but it needed a lot of VTRs available to minimise analogue generation loss, and a lot of careful pre-planning - you couldn't just alter the relationship of the layers on a whim.
This guitar tone is called "woman tone". Eric Clapton pioneered it in the 1960's. It is achieved by cranking your amp and setting it fairly bright, but turning the tone knobs on a guitar all the way of. It results in a soft almost flute like tone
That is indeed. And the way he plays them is staggering. Also even the "easiest" of instruments is palyed with earnesty,... I wonder whether he had Asperger, or a different form of Autism? But wonderful version of the Tell'sche Ouverture.
In the 1970's musicians didn't have the technology to record different instruments at different times in the recording studio.. they only had the technology to make 3D duplicate prints of themselves..
Amazing how people do stuff like this(visually I mean) on youtube all the time, but back then it was so novel and new. and such a wonderful performance!
Anderson is a talented man in a different way. Room for many talents, the more the better. Both a bit under recognised, although, Tull were huge around 71 just before 'Bells.

What cracks me up about this video, for the longest time, is how he plays the jingle bells as if it the most important instrument in the world. He just is a musical genius.
I found this single in a bargain bin in early 1980 and played it over and over. It sounded like a simple little tune. Only now, seeing this video, do I realise how much went into it. That bargain bin (35p each single) was a godsend for Mike Oldfield fans. I remember Cuckoo Song b/w Pipe Tune, Portsmouth b/s Speak tho' you only say farewell, a single b/w Argiers (might have been In Dulci Jubilo). I can't recall what was on the other side of this single. Anyone remember?

There are very few artistes that are so many talented, Mick Oldfield, David Bowie and Roy Wood, it's fantastic to her them and although I love the other two, Mike Oldfield eclipses them both with his musical skill.
Hoping the kids who loved Mike's Nuclear, found this and enjoyed. He may not have sang on 'most' of his tracks, but his musical talent that even makes cover versions (Rossini) his own.

I am more amazed by the fact that they were able to overlay videos already at the time when Mike Oldfield looked like this. Late 60s or what?

He is a true multi instrumentalist!

Mike Oldfield has a really unique, soft guitar tone.
Sometimes it sounds more like a double reed than a guitar, it's very unique
And annoying.

Oldfield has a level of multi-instrumental professionalism that I can barely even dream of.
Check out the Swedish band Wintergatan. They are all multi-instrumental - amazing.

Mike Oldfield genius musician and bloody funny as well.
This guy seems to become very famous on UA-cam.
Der hatte schon ne geile Band, damals :-)

I've always loved the way he approaches lead guitar, usually just switching that tone control off and wobbling the shit out of each note. Magical.
Love Mike oldfield xx
i recognize only one person as talented as him, Ian Anderson.
I am a Oldfield Fan and Jethro Tull, too. Yes, Ian is famous, too
