Yep.. there is a bit of perpetuating a self-made myth and image of Oldfield being a pioneering multi-instrumentalist, who did everything himself, and played it all by multi-tracking., All credit to the contributing musicians who didn't get a look in with the videos.

But it looks like it's just one person playing. Mike didn't write it, though as they are very old medieval folk tunes, just modernised and arranged with guitar.
Alan Ross It's an arrangement of I Saw Three Ships. As someone who plays precisely no instruments my admiration for Mike Oldfield knows no bounds - actually I can do the intro to Smoke on the Water on one string ( which I gather is not how it should be done )
Indeed, it's not made perfectly clear in the video - but look at the final shot. The centre 'window' shows a wind-instrumentalist relaxing... With no beard or moustache, unlike Oldfield.
My children who are now 29 and 32 love this song. We used to play it in the car on the way to our holiday in Devon. Mike Oldfield isn't just for Christmas he's for all seasons

When I told my mom about this 'newly' discovered song a couple of years ago, her answer couldn't be more surprising. Apparently when I was about 4 years old, any time Il Dulci Jubilo played, we danced around the table with cloths in our hands. Waving and skipping 'till the song ended. Haven't stopped listening since. A magical song! With a memory I never knew about.

When I was 10 y.o, the year 1998-99, my Music teacher show us this video... Inmediately I was completely impressed. One only man playing all those instruments. When I was come to my house i told my father that unreal experience, he goes to his music box and show me Tubular Bells II in a cassette. I heard that masterpiece and I begged my parents to buy more music by Mike Oldfield, my new God. We bought (on CD) Tubular Bells I, remasterized, Tubular Bells III (one of my favourite albums ever) and Guitars. The rest is history. Thanks for all this music and for making lot of people dream.
To be fair, Mike isn't playing all the instruments. The wind instruments are played by Les Penning, whose face never appears except partially near the end. I'm not sure about on the video, but the drums were also played by someone else on the record. Oldfield and Penning were both responsible for the arrangement of the song. That's not to take anything away from Mike Oldfield - but just not to take anything away from Les Penning.
This is literally the only 'Christmas' song that I listen to any time of the year. I mean, it's not 100% festive but it is usually heard around the Christmas holidays. But still I listen to it whenever I want to, it's such an amazing rendition!

We bought (on CD) Tubular Bells I, remasterized, Tubular Bells III (one of my favourite albums ever) and Guitars. The rest is history.

To be fair, Mike isn't playing all the instruments. The wind instruments are played by Les Penning, whose face never appears except partially near the end. I'm not sure about on the video, but the drums were also played by someone else on the record. Oldfield and Penning were both responsible for the arrangement of the song. That's not to take anything away from Mike Oldfield - but just not to take anything away from Les Penning.

This is literally the only 'Christmas' song that I listen to any time of the year. I mean, it's not 100% festive but it is usually heard around the Christmas holidays. But still I listen to it whenever I want to, it's such an amazing rendition!
