Scene that always sticks out to me is when Sam and Quora are fighting in the club, and Flynn comes in. Suddenly, those on the side of Flynn are empowered, and begin to defeat CLU's troops, badly. When Flynn passes by in his robes, other programs weep and kneel before him, and it looks like he is blessing a few as he passes by.
This makes me wonder, since there were many programs on the Grid who thought of Users negatively (evident by the basics booing at Sam when Jarvis called him a user), does this mean atheists exist on the Grid?
@@BrutusWasntTakenShort answer is yes. With hundreds of cycles having passed under Clu's reign many programs may not recall what it was like under Flynn. With Clu's intense need for control, I would assume one of the first things he did was to stamp out any with allegiance to (or even belief in) the users.
@@BrutusWasntTaken That's an intriguing thought, but it's undercut by Flynn's actual presence in The Grid. A better comparison would be that the programs are apostates; they know he exists, but choose to turn their backs on him. All that said, programs in the Grid that are straight-up atheists would be an interesting subject to explore, especially now that Flynn has sacrificed himself to stop Clu (assuming he doesn't somehow respawn, of course)
@@necrosunderground Considering Tron Identity will take place in alternative Grid, one where Flynn promised to return, but was prevented from doing so due to the events of Evolution, I'm sure he might be considered a myth by few ISOs in that Grid. Prinz, one of the characters in the game, also uses the plural "Users" instead of "User", presumably meaning their might have been more users controlling the Grid rather than just Flyn.
Tron was first released when I was 10. One of the biggest complaints about it was that if you weren’t a computer programmer you wouldn’t understand it. I’ve never felt that way, but now that I am a programmer I understand it in more detail. It’s multilayered with great depth. I love Tron and it’s sequel and never get sick of seeing it.
Love this underrated movie at the time. I come back to it regularly and uncover new layers all the time. As all good sci fi does. Love your channel. One of the few UA-camrs I’d actually be excited to meet. Excellent work as always.
I saw this movie twice in the theaters when it was released - first in 3D (and I was blown away by it) and then in 2d and was STILL blown away by it. I still watch this religiously every year as I own the special edition on Blu-Ray which also came with the original Tron movie, which I also saw in the theaters when it was first released. Excellent video and I also felt that Tron Legacy definitely hit on many religious type philosophies and for that, I love this movie more than the original, which I still love as well.
Thank you Nerd Cookies for another great video to enjoy (while sipping my coffee).Excellent points made and I LOVE it when a video makes me *think* about a movie and it’s themes.
I really hadn't thought about the more spiritual aspects of tron and tron legacy. This video was intriguing and well made. I also think of the light grid (battles) as the ancient roman collaseum battles. Now I am going to watch them both again 😊
Tron has been an inspiration since I was young. I thought about religious ideas on several movies and series, ie: Battlestar Galactica and you expressed my ideas clearly. Thanks
This is one of your best videos yet. I also completely agree with your interpretation of the symbolism in Tron. I think the second Tron movie needed some help in the script and editing as the movie was kind of confusing the first couple of times watching it. All these neat allegories and subplots were hard to pick up as you spent most of your time just trying to figure out what was going on.
Transhumanist themes are embedded in legacy, Sam and quora becoming one on the motorcycle into the light. 666 themes on the transportation scenes, triple helix code of quora, the replacement of God's disc (flynn) with quora's (new being) at the end.
I think Flynn thought the perfect system meant order but to much order becomes tyranny (clue) and the isoes represented chaos to clue the opposite of order which is uncertainty but the chaos of the isoes Flynn saw was potential.
Orange 🍊 is a color that can elicit hunger, CLU and CLU’s followers have orange in their color schemes. A yearning a lack of balance and nourishment. That is my comment ❤️🔥
Another great video, I haven't watched Tron 2 nearly as much as the first. However, I was always struck, growing up in an Irish Roman Catholic house, at the concepts of the first Tron. Flynn would very much be a God like being to the Grid, and he is human and flawed. Then you have the MCP, which takes the human concept of hubris against the divine to a very real level. To find "God" turn them mortal and try to destroy them to become a God yourself. It definitely led to me questioning my own doctrines and seeing what others had to offer.
It seems unlikely that Programs would somehow mysteriously develop human-like emotional, metaphorical, and spiritual characteristics. Their coding is too simple. Unless... Unless it is not humanity from which their essence is derived. While it is true that humans built their digital environment, humans do not imbue the Programs with meaning. To me, that suggests that there is something underlying about the Tron universe itself; that the capacity for consciousness grants all minds access to some deeper field or illimitable well of moral and intuitive being which is not specific to humans, but which is present in their universe as a whole, irrespective of an individual's form. Humans merely draw from the same well. The digital ecosystem itself might see Flynn as a creator figure, but the Programs should only see Flynn as a fellow traveler, albeit one who is substantively fragmented into two halves - one fanatically driven by the pursuit of perfection, and the other old and wise enough to embrace the reality of imperfection and mortality.
This is personal bias but Ive always liked to view Tron through a Christian Biblical lens, as a mirror of the Fall of Man and the coming of Jesus. You have a world that has fallen away from its intended design, ruled by one of the Maker's servants who rebelled, populated by beings who have been manipulated to believe the Maker is the real oppressor, save for a small resistance, and salvation comes through the arrival of the Maker's one and only Son, etc.
Tron (1982) has plenty of mentions of faith and belief. Sark says "those of you who continue to profess a belief in the users...", "those of you who renounce this superstitious and hysterical belief..." for two, but there's more.
Programs don't have souls if you think theistic, so it seems a little strange to compare it to a religious concept, but it's perhaps a good way for us viewing the world of TRON so we can conceptualise ourselves? The visual world is made, so that part is easy. I still have issues with the theistic aspect because I am an atheist, so I always thought it was like a virus in the system.

I love the video. And I have to admit, you have the most soothing voice.
Amazing video, can you do a video on Jet Bradley from Tron 2.0

Interesting to think about the religious and spiritual themes in the Tron franchise. Keep up the great work!
If Disney was not so distracted by redoing all their classic films into modern retreads maybe we could have that third movie to complete the story.
I love the scene with flynn in the club when he comes to save his son to daft punk . . And the reaction of everyone

I never thought of the deeper meanings of these two films. It does make sense after watching this video. Thanks.

Brilliant video. I have had a similar idea planned for a long time. I'm so glad you covered this. Keep up the great work.
Thank you Rali!
In retrospect, Tron is basically a techno version of Buddhism and the Bible.
Thanks for the vid. Great work as ever.
Another fine video Nerdie. My first video of the day.
Another fine video Elaine
Great video!!!
I really hope they make Tron 3.
Love your videos thank you.
Awesomeness. Love me Tron Cookies. 🤩🤩🤩

Here's hoping they keep these themes in the new movie instead of making it a platform for modern ideas.
However, judging Disney's track record of late I don't see any hope. :(
Behold! the son of our maker!!
@Nerd Cookies does this mean you watched all the TRON movies now? Now Blade Runner =P?

I just miss Tron Uprising.

Since watching this video I’m now starting to see Sam Flynn as Jesus Christ
The concept of "Faith" is never mentioned though ? . . . Bible has ~800 instance including "Believe", e.g. Luke 18:8
Zuse said he believed in users once before.
