Hammock Happiness on the Superior Hiking Trail, Minnesota PART 1

  • My Summer show season is winding down so I headed up to the Superior Hiking Trail here in Northern Minnesota for a couple of nights of sweet and long hammock sleep in the piney woods.
    Filled a gap between Gooseberry River and Split Rock River that I have never walked yet.
    Some walking, some talking, show my hammock, JRB Hudson River TQ, Frankenquilt and some general hammock chit-chat and palaver.
    Filmed with my Canon ELPH 110HS and a bit of GoPro.
    Whoooooo Buddy))))))

    I truly need need to give this more than one thumb up. Not only did Shug help me get through my first hammock camping experience the other night (hello underquilts vs. sleeping pads...yup, I need an UQ)...I detect that he can do an excellent Robin Williams impression. Thanks Shug!

    Great as always Shug. Id like to particularly thank you for another hammock tutorial. I know you have dozens of these videos, some of which you have already went through the setup- but for someone like me who is in the process of switching over to the hammock system- I have to admit all of the components that make it up can be overwhelming. It's so nice to have a seasoned pro like you to glean all of this knowledge from!

    You went to bed at 1am, woke up at 5am, drove 3hrs. and walked in 8 miles and still took the time to make a vid to entertain and teach hammocking. So, on that note I just want to say thank you very much. I've learned a lot from all your vids (They're like backpackers gold) and can't wait to get a hammock or maybe make one. I'm still sleeping on the ground... "like a worm", lol.. but I love my ground shelters too. Thanks again for your efforts and entertainment. Looking forward to seeing the next one. WooHoo Buddy :)

    Greatly appreciate the videos--the knowledge and perspectives of the trail. Been hammocking for about a year. It revolutionized my travel capabilities. I see more places I never would have. Instead of having to hang out in expensive places I can't afford, I hang out in the bushes. Great Lakes has always been one of my favorite areas. Never been anywhere tropical like Hawaii--maybe try to get there someday. Heard kayaking around South tip of FL is great scenery too--if you want to be a snowbird--Thanks again and take er' easy.

    That was a lot of fun Shug. Sometimes I wonder if you ever think to yourself, "ya know, I kinda already did a video series talking about just this subject." Well, I'm going to tell you right now that all of this information is great to hear again, even if you already covered it a year or two ago! Another small thing but something that I really like is that you show your all of your snacks and meals. For me, hiking and hammocking are the cake and the food is like the frosting. We should all be reminded that a meal on the trail is a highlight to be thankful for. :)

    Hey Shug, another great video - thanks for sharing.
    I've always wondered how you leave your coffee setup at night - from your videos it seems as though you wake up and you have you cook pot and coffee right there next to your hammock ready to go.
    Any chance you could share that setup with us in one of your next videos? I figured leaving my coffee out would be a no-no - I put all my "food" stuffs in my bear bag at night and hang away from my hammock.
    Cheers!

    One of the funniest stories I ever read was called When a three chilli cook off goes horribly wrong. Two men decide to try three different chilli meals on a camping trip. They agree all three are good. But then the night sets in and its starts to rain and then they have to sleep in a tent. Need I say what happens next? In the middle of the night they have to leave the tent. Staying inside the tent is just not an option. Its a damn funny story. Thanks for sharing your trips with us. I always enjoy watching.

    So do you keep a fire going all night nearby? How do you handle the bear situation besides hanging food far away?

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  4 роки тому +1

      I usually don't make a fire when solo. If I do it is a small one for a short time. As far as bears go I stay vigilant to signs of bear, keep a clean camp. About the best I can do. I don't hike with worry.

    Thanks for sharing this, looks like a blast. I think that first mushroom was a fly amanita wasn't it? I believe it's hallucinogenic and possible deadly, but not sure. They are very cool looking though, haven't seen one in a while.

    • @coast2coast00
      @coast2coast00 10 років тому

      It's poisonous but not really deadly.. you would have to eat more than a full meal of raw mushrooms to be killed by them, just boiling them removes all the poison as it is water soluble. There hasn't been a reported death from this mushroom in over a hundred years.

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  10 років тому +1

    • @coast2coast00
      @coast2coast00 10 років тому

      ***** If you boil them they are just a food.. I heard they eat them in the old country as some traditional food, but I've never heard about anyone eating them over here.
      Edit: I just looked up how to cook them correctly, they boiled them for 10 minutes, changed the water and boiled for 10 minutes, then sauteed with butter and salt. No ill(literaly) effects.
      also someone posted this comment which I thought was funny
      "I nibbled on the raw mushroom in the forest because I saw animals had been doing the same. I got great energy and was bounding through the forest in an excellent mood from a single nibble!"
