Hammock Happiness on the Superior Hiking Trail, Minnesota PART 1
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 жов 2024
- My Summer show season is winding down so I headed up to the Superior Hiking Trail here in Northern Minnesota for a couple of nights of sweet and long hammock sleep in the piney woods.
Filled a gap between Gooseberry River and Split Rock River that I have never walked yet.
Some walking, some talking, show my hammock, JRB Hudson River TQ, Frankenquilt and some general hammock chit-chat and palaver.
Filmed with my Canon ELPH 110HS and a bit of GoPro.
Whoooooo Buddy))))))
Shug
Thanks for taking us along Shug. I love it!
I truly need need to give this more than one thumb up. Not only did Shug help me get through my first hammock camping experience the other night (hello underquilts vs. sleeping pads...yup, I need an UQ)...I detect that he can do an excellent Robin Williams impression. Thanks Shug!
I'll take a pinky up! Glad to help. I have been compared to him a lot though I don't set out to be a copy of him. Thankee.
As always my friend great stuff. Thanks for taking us along.
***** Thankee fller...
Thing o' beauty, those woods. Thanks as always for bringing us along. You had a nice spiral on that tarp toss. Karl's always a treat! Mmmmhhmmmm
lckeeper1 I was a long snapper. I thankee.

Looks like a great place to get away from it all, Thanks for taking us along :)) Outstanding video Shug
***** It did me right. Thankee.
Great as always Shug. Id like to particularly thank you for another hammock tutorial. I know you have dozens of these videos, some of which you have already went through the setup- but for someone like me who is in the process of switching over to the hammock system- I have to admit all of the components that make it up can be overwhelming. It's so nice to have a seasoned pro like you to glean all of this knowledge from!
BuckeyeHiker There is a learning curve but easy when you get it figured out.
I always enjoy your videos they have helped me alot with what I'm going to do for my hikes and over nighters.
Rafael Soto Good to hear that.
Wooooo buddy. Shug is back in the woods. I feel ya on the solo hike, it's a great way to clear your head. To see you fooling around in the woods is funny, it's like your kid. Although we all have to grow old, some of us never grow up.
Rob Marley I am 56 but feel 23....until I glance in the mirror! Thankee.
As I buzz through your films here sir, I am quite in awe as to your musical talents. An unexpected gift. I like it.
I am taking a bow here.
Shug, the happy giant pickle guy frolicking in the piney woods...all is well with the world!!
Brian Mowers Had to amuse myself out there!
Awesome to see ya out Shugster! Thanks for letting us tag along!
TomsBackwoods I thought I felt someone behind me....
Thanks Shug. I wish it was that cool back here in NC! Sitting here listening to the audio and catching glimpses of the video as I answer phones and shuffle paperwork makes me want to hit my head on the wall! I appreciate the vicarious thrill as always. Gotta get my hammock at least in the back yard!
Lynn Clark String that thing up...post haste!
Awesome! Can't wait to see the rest. Nothing like getting out there to clear the mind and reset.
David Byrge You speak truth.
You went to bed at 1am, woke up at 5am, drove 3hrs. and walked in 8 miles and still took the time to make a vid to entertain and teach hammocking. So, on that note I just want to say thank you very much. I've learned a lot from all your vids (They're like backpackers gold) and can't wait to get a hammock or maybe make one. I'm still sleeping on the ground... "like a worm", lol.. but I love my ground shelters too. Thanks again for your efforts and entertainment. Looking forward to seeing the next one. WooHoo Buddy :)
Don P Want to make one...here are the best instructions. Made Greenbean from these....www.tothewoods.net/HammockCamping.html.
Thanks for the good words.
Sweet!, Thanks for the link, Shug. Take care, Don P.
Great video. Glad to see you back out on the trail and in the hammock. Can't wait to see part two. I've been waiting all summer for your first video from the woods. Thanks!
Ben F Had to get some work done first......I thankee.
Every backpacker has a guy they follow on you tube that they get tips from and talk about, your my guy. Thanks for being the guy. As strange as I am I don't think It could have been anyone else.
MobyDickHead Glad to be there for ye'.......Whooooooo buddy))))
Wonderful as always Shug. Can't wait for part 2 :)
latitude918 Thankee.
Love Gooseberry in the wintertime. b-a-utiful!!
***** Might pretty place that.
I love those birds, pine cones, views on the Minnesota, the split rock and falls (watch out for the ledge!) and those mushrooms photos! Loved to see interactions with Karl! Whoooooo buddy!
I am glad I found your channel. I use to come to Minnesota State fair from Texas for a number of years and remember seeing your show. Great videos.
87jstep Right good to hear from you...Whoooooo Buddy)))))
9:22. Haha. So funny. Nice costume Shug.
We have missed ya Shuuuuuuge great to see you out and about.
Love the videos Shug! You crack me up and motivate us to get out and hang in the woods. Thanks! We need it!
Georgia Hanger I need to get out myself soon...you have now motivated me))))
Greatly appreciate the videos--the knowledge and perspectives of the trail. Been hammocking for about a year. It revolutionized my travel capabilities. I see more places I never would have. Instead of having to hang out in expensive places I can't afford, I hang out in the bushes. Great Lakes has always been one of my favorite areas. Never been anywhere tropical like Hawaii--maybe try to get there someday. Heard kayaking around South tip of FL is great scenery too--if you want to be a snowbird--Thanks again and take er' easy.
Livin'Large Still much to see here in Minnesota. And NC. Thankee.
whoo buddy! shore does my heart a ration of good to see yall out in them pines. your vids really help get me over the threshold and out there campin' in the hammock, and not just swingin' in the yard. it's starting to chill off a bit in the evenings down here in Ga, time to get this whole underquilt thang figured out. with my budget, i'll be working on piecing one together out of scrounged stuff at first. can't wait to see yours n Hickrey's Linville adventure this year. those are my faves. anyhoo, greetings from Georgia and thankee!
RasBuyaka Hickery and I are planning now! Thankee.
Well well, always good to see your set up in the piney woods. It looked about good enough to sleep in for about...12 hours or so.
Always a treat to see Carl out there with ya. Need you to make a little detour though TN when you head south again.
Come on part 2!!
Got one.
CampfireTalk Karl snuck up on me.......
I do love some Tennessee
DixieLiving Everything makes Karl a might nervoust.....
Man I enjoyed that! Thanks for always having informative, entertaining video's!
Shanon Copeland I thankee.
Good one, Shug, thanks for posting. Super intro.
skwatupu I thankee.....Whooooo Buddy))))0
Enjoyed the vicarious trip to the MN wilderness. You are a gifted entertainer and teacher. Always amazed at your ability to make the viewer feel like they are there with you. Hard to believe that you are out there all alone with a camera. Whoo buddy from another old guy wishing to be in the woods
Dean Kirby I want you to feel like your out there with me. I appreciate your comment. I thankee.
That was a lot of fun Shug. Sometimes I wonder if you ever think to yourself, "ya know, I kinda already did a video series talking about just this subject." Well, I'm going to tell you right now that all of this information is great to hear again, even if you already covered it a year or two ago! Another small thing but something that I really like is that you show your all of your snacks and meals. For me, hiking and hammocking are the cake and the food is like the frosting. We should all be reminded that a meal on the trail is a highlight to be thankful for. :)
Patriot36 Used to get asked about what I ate so now I always like to feature it. Thanks...it is good to go over stuff again. I thankee.
Nice Shug! Good to see fall kicking in up there. I bet that really was a relaxing trip.
nohill4climber It so was. Needed a break from everything!
Man this was great! All the elements of a great Shug video. I couldn't agree more on the solo trips, sometimes you just gotta get out there and enjoy it. I'm about to head down to the Gorge for my own solo trip. And a big thanks to you for sharing it with all of us, all your videos helped me pick where to go and made me just giddy to finally see it myself. Looking forward to the rest of this trip. Whoo buddy!
Ian Young Be vigilant in the Gorge and have a great time. Remember the Gorge ain't about miles.
Thanks! I will be, I'm always a little slower and more careful by myself. Not planning a lot of miles, just taking ,my time and enjoying it. Looking forward to the next Hickery Bros trip!
Awesome video, Shug! Entertaining and informative! Your camp set-ups are A+! Looking forward to part 2! :)
boggycreekbeast Mucho obligato!
I always refer new hammock campers to this video for a quick expansion of the gear and setup...good stuff!
Well I do have a lot!! haaaa studio.ua-cam.com/channels/27nqmEhKzD9YHK1IFwG7qA.htmlcontent/playlists?o=U
Hey Shug, another great video - thanks for sharing.
I've always wondered how you leave your coffee setup at night - from your videos it seems as though you wake up and you have you cook pot and coffee right there next to your hammock ready to go.
Any chance you could share that setup with us in one of your next videos? I figured leaving my coffee out would be a no-no - I put all my "food" stuffs in my bear bag at night and hang away from my hammock.
Cheers!
Much thanks for the Vid. Just bought a Hammock and a friend recommended your vids!
As usual, entertaining AND educational. I'm now at the point in my hanging quests that whenever I'm faced with condondrum, I just ask myself "What would Shug do?" Glad to see you were able to get out and hang in the lonely woods removed from the press of humanity :-)
Don kellogg Whoooooo Buddy)))))
Bravo..... Bravo....
Great to see you out hangin around.
Don Milligan Thankee feller.
Wow 8 miles on 4 hours sleep after doing a show. You deserve a good meal and a nice long snooze in the hammock. Looking forward to part 2.
DC Rickerson And how. Went into a light coma.....
Those lil pine cones at 3:00 look like Mother Nature's Christmas ornaments. Sweet shot.
AugustHawk Yes! You noticed. They really struk me on the trail. I stood and stared a while there. One of the best moments on this trip.
Great vid and new subscriber.... i hit that trail back in 94 as the assistant editor of the Cook County News Herald. I remember seeing a beautiful red fox on the trail. A blessed experience...
For sure. Always a treat.
Glad to see you back in your natural habitat!
TheOutdoordude Thankee.....
Great vid! I was just up the north shore! Last weekend. The weather was great.
Way to go Shug!! No Seriously, it looks like you picked the best way to go.
GREAT video. I like the instructables toooo.
Sebastopolmark Mucho obligato.

1IdeaAhead I hung it out for all to see.......fiddly to rig up though.

I happened upon this older video of a great mentor of hammocking and backpacking............the GREAT SHUG! Quality of videography and audio was very good, especially color. I would like to see more of your cooking, whether at camp or group.
Thankee. It is shown in some, way, shape or form in my Trip Videos.

Very good Shug. I was having a hard time driving to work this morning, someone cut me off, had to circle around to my favorite doughnut store because I have a sinus infection. Doughnuts will cure that you know. But I got to work a little early so I started watching your video and I calmed down. I felt centered again, oohhmmm.
guyfihi Feel better. Those infections are horrible.
Hey Shug,
I would sure enjoy an in depth look at your water filter if you ever get a chance. I'm thinking about trying my hand at a diy attempt. Great quality entertainment as always! Thanks for taking the time to include us on your adventures!

Thank you so much! I looked around and could not find the female piece for the coupling! That is exactly what I need! Have a very Merry Christmas!
One of the funniest stories I ever read was called When a three chilli cook off goes horribly wrong. Two men decide to try three different chilli meals on a camping trip. They agree all three are good. But then the night sets in and its starts to rain and then they have to sleep in a tent. Need I say what happens next? In the middle of the night they have to leave the tent. Staying inside the tent is just not an option. Its a damn funny story. Thanks for sharing your trips with us. I always enjoy watching.
When you mentioned Mountain House chilli mack I thought of that story. Have you tried Mountain House Chicken breast with mashed potatoes? Thats a really good one.
David Kovachi No Sir. Not yet.
David Kovachi ...and the tent rose from the ground to the Heavens.....
Oh the humanities. Maybe they left the tent behind. At the very least they had to air it out.
I am going to get up there some day to hike and hang. Great video, thanks.
Steve Vincent It lays there awaiting your arrival.....
Can't wait to get out this spring on the SHT and have some brrreaakfast in the haaaammock, myself. I'm right there with ya Shug.
Brian Olsen I can't wait to get back out there too.
Love it shug look forward to nxt part gb
Steven Cavana Thankee.
Great video! Loved Gooseberry falls when I went, but it is crowded at times!
CMBUnlimited One of the more crowded parks as it is the first one folks arrive at.

jdefriess I am getting picky about my woods time.......only share it with a few! You know.
*****
as long as you got "me" "myself" and "I" the three of you should be fine.
I wish we could get them sachets of peanut butter in the UK 😔 thanks for sharing buddy, keep them coming!
That is fantastic buddy! As my school teacher once said on my report...'must try harder'! Thanks for that Shug👍🏻😉
Nothing like toasty Metatarsals if i do say so myself;) Great Vid as always .
atommachine and phalanges.....!
Good stuff as always!
Have you ever hammocked/camped on the superior trail section of the porcupine mountains?
Planning on heading there in a few weeks, wondering how it is.
It's good to see you getting some well deserved woods time. From a wee lad to present I have always liked fruit cake. I have never come across the Claxton brand but darn sure looked good to me.
MrPoppabear255 It is my favorite brand.
Shug, you really are Upney!!
Which, if you check the London Underground map, you will find that Upney is the next stop after Barking!
Best wishes, Chris.
cnb1971 Is it like Hackney? I have family there!
So do you keep a fire going all night nearby? How do you handle the bear situation besides hanging food far away?
I usually don't make a fire when solo. If I do it is a small one for a short time. As far as bears go I stay vigilant to signs of bear, keep a clean camp. About the best I can do. I don't hike with worry.
shugemery Thanks Shug, I will keep that in mind when I go- and thanks for the other great videos, too!
had a great fun time watching you as allways ! i have a few weeks left (lot to do at work) untill i can take out my new ultralight DD hammock, that i just got :) take care Shug
Zeth Linder Have a right goodie of a trip then!
Great void Shut... Thanks you deserve two ponies. 🐎🐎
shippen2010 Thankee.
On ole green bean how did you gather the ends for whipping? Did you pull up the sides a bit to make them more taunt before whipping or just gather ends straight across? Love the vids amigo!
Sure would be nice to see Shug back on the trail soon...
Sure would.
Good to see you get away in the woods!
camembert101 I thankee.

Shug, you are the coolest guy on youtube. I had to subscribe! keep making the awesome videos!
The Bassinator24 Whoooooooo Buddy and thankee.
Shug, I got a question for you. How do I put a ridgeline on a store bought hammock?
The Bassinator24 Like this....www.tothewoods.net/HomemadeHammock4.html
Thanks Shug. I am definitely gonna use this a lot!
Love how you always go Scottish when you talk about breakfast in your hammock, where did that come from. Really enjoy your videos, keep on hiking. Ellis
Ellis Moncrief Just seems right to say it that way. Not sure why. Thankee.
Great video as usually Shug.
Got a couple questions if you have the time… How tall are you and what are the dimensions ol' Green bean.
"As usually"? Wow, either I was more tired than I thought while posting that comment or the auto-complete on my phone made me look like, "I dun never got me a good ejimakashun."
you are good :) and you have there beautiful nature
SharkxXxc Thankee and Whoooooo Buddy))))
Awh sucks Shugrow ... I been awaitin' this video since the morning you left! I feel the tension leaving the body pal! Think I need to get out here soon for a little solo me'self! Looking forward to "the rest of the story" as old Mr. Harvey use to say!
***** I hope you get a wee solo. I'll do you right.
It's good to get away and be by your self sometimes.
I am STILL working to get all my bits together, need my treestraps, rainfly/tarp and net...using a GT hammock a lot like your greenbean with Whoopie Slings. What net do you use on this hammock? Not sure if I should sew one on, or get a wrap around. I also don't have a sewing machine lol..
Thanks uh...Gumby... wow. hah.
Scott Veirs I use that hammock in bugless weather. If buggy I use my Warbonnet Blackbird XLC.
Very cool how you shot the first 30 seconds of this video.
Wes Kanoy Thankee...my backwoods string-cam.
Thank you for all the demonstration of how to setup top and under quilts. I appreciate it! You missed the camera by an inch on that throw! ;)
Y'elcome.
Always enjoyable.
Dan Watts Thankee.
Is this the section that is closed down now? It looks to be? I just discovered the trail a few years ago...it’s a shame there’s such a giant section detoured.
That was Split Rock River Loop if I recall....open as far as I know.
You are the uncle I have always wanted
KingThallion Whooooooo Buddy psuedo nephew....
Been a minute since you published this but you are as much a part of me moving out of CA to MN as Jerry Brown and Gavin Newsom. Looking forward to clear skies, deep snow, and honest folk.
I know who Gavin Newsome is.
It is nice here.
Thanks for sharing this, looks like a blast. I think that first mushroom was a fly amanita wasn't it? I believe it's hallucinogenic and possible deadly, but not sure. They are very cool looking though, haven't seen one in a while.
It's poisonous but not really deadly.. you would have to eat more than a full meal of raw mushrooms to be killed by them, just boiling them removes all the poison as it is water soluble. There hasn't been a reported death from this mushroom in over a hundred years.
coast2coast00 Do they make one trip?
I don't want to risk it, the trip might be to the morgue!
Gotta go, I see you posted part 2 and I've been waiting to watch it.... :)
***** If you boil them they are just a food.. I heard they eat them in the old country as some traditional food, but I've never heard about anyone eating them over here.
Edit: I just looked up how to cook them correctly, they boiled them for 10 minutes, changed the water and boiled for 10 minutes, then sauteed with butter and salt. No ill(literaly) effects.
also someone posted this comment which I thought was funny
"I nibbled on the raw mushroom in the forest because I saw animals had been doing the same. I got great energy and was bounding through the forest in an excellent mood from a single nibble!"
ur so awesome man hahaha cracking me up!!!!
***** Haaaa....easy to be awesome on a mighty fine trip))))) Thankee.
Hey Shug, I have noticed that I never see you use a bugnet. Why is that? And if it's simply because there are not any creepies when you camp, what do you do when there are creepies?
Josh Holbrook There wern't no bugs! I do when needed though...ua-cam.com/video/gH6VOFvuXDQ/v-deo.html
Getting away from life. I'm about due... happy trails
SoulSurvivorX2 Life did not miss me whilst I was gone.....the trip was a soul-soother. Go Girl....go)))))
***** I thankee
Split Rock is AWESOME!!!!!!
Wes Kanoy Yes it is...
