It’s great to hear from an experienced hunter and realize that game harvesting takes patience and effort. I’ve throughly enjoyed your posts over the years but this one may be my favorite hunting story yet, especially the bit about how age affects your abilities… I nodded my head as you spoke, lol! Love to listen to this gentleman talk what a great outdoorsman with the knowledge and experience he tells it like it is and that is hard to find anymore when it comes to big game loads thanks for all your videos .
Good information. I am a huge 7mm fan, particularly the 7mm Rem Mag which your friend Les Bowman helped create. I set 600 yards as my limit, with 500 and in preferable. Thank you for taking the ethical stance on long range shooting of game. I think much of this trend is ego driven. Good detailed information on the 7mm 175 Partition bullet as well! I have tested them in my 7mm Rem Mag at 2950fps in a 26" barrel and they shot very well, but that's almost a full 300fps behind your 7mm-404 Wapiti Express. Certainly a noticeable difference there. 3240 fps for a 7mm 175 Partition sounds like a hammer! I only imagine Mr. Bowman would have found this round very interesting.
Thank you Randy and Cathy! Congratulations on the successful hunt, your hard work and perseverance paid off! Thanks for sharing your lifetime of experience and knowledge.
Not only a real gunsmith but a real hunter also. You really deserved this. As a true hunter myself this goes to the soul. Im sure you understand. Thanks for all you do. God bless.

Thanks for sharing your hunt Randy glad you got one already this year.always enjoy y’all’s videos I have learned a lot from y’all’s videos keep up the good work God bless
Nice public land bull. Glad to see that there are plenty of survivors, after last winter. I shoot a Rem 700 adl in 7mm Rem Mag. I tried the 175 gr Partition but my rifle didn't like that bullet much. I never found a load that shot under 1". I settled for the 160 gr Partition flying at about 2925 fps. If I keep my shots under 350, it has performed well for me. I'm grouping around 5/8"-3/4" at 100. It kills fairly quickly. Haven't had a bull just shake it off yet... I know you prefer the "big 7's". If you had to hunt with a 7mm Rem Mag, would you stiil try to use the 175 gr or would you go to the 160 gr?
Having never met him, I had no idea Randy was nearly the same age as me :) I also have been shooting the 7mm 's for a LOOOOONG time, but I have the 'classic' old all steel 9 lug Browning BLR with a loooong barrel :) Just a thought, I've had no problem killing anything I've aimed at with this 7 Rem Mag, but instead of the 175, I've been shooting the 160 Nos partitions in front of oh, 75.1 grains or so of IMR 8133 which spits em out at just at just a hair over 3050 fps from my rifle on a good day. For sure that load is a smidge compressed, and has a bit of kick (but I'll bet a lot less than Randy's homebrew 404 :) Anyway, it's proven reliable and accurate as hell. Now I'm a ' stalker' by nature, so my shots are generally less distant, sometimes ridiculously so, but I am curious about one thing. When I''ve hunted bull elk, its been in the early morning , shortly after the big boys bed down and are becoming a bit drowsy. This more often than not gives me the opportunity to not only track em, but to get a lot closer, and giving me the rest of the day to dress one out. Randy must still be one helluva stud to recover, dress, and pack out a big elk bull all by himself. For those readers who have not yet done it, if you're alone, you're probably not going to enjoy it- big bull elk, are, uh BIG lol. One last thing, trying to dress one out while losing light at the end of the day, at least where I've hunted, is inviting unwarranted 'competitors, most of which are intent on contesting ownership of the carcass- NOT a game I'd choose to play in the dark while at work, alone. Let me give you an example. Now I''ve spent considerable time in Alaska, and once had a freshly dressed Bull Moose, which I had then covered with the requisite netting etc. for the night as it was growing dark, and it had been a long day. Next morning I returned from camp only to find he'd gone 'missing' in the jaws of a BIG Brownie who had simply picked him up and walked off with him leaving huge tracks and freshly furrowed ground behind him that looked a lot like old covered wagon tracks where the moose's legs had dragged through the moist ground. Simply put, I would NOT have wanted to have been there alone in the dark when THAT old boy came looking for an easy meal. Oh, btw, some years ago I was trying to find a knowledgeable source of 'reliable ' information on loading for my 7mm, when I asked a friend of mine (remember the old 'hillbilly' mountain man expert character in Wahlberg's "Shooter" movie? -yes he really existed). He told me that I should give Randy a call, which I did, though I doubt Randy would remember now lol. We spoke for some time and let me tell you, I learned a LOT about the 7mm, the best bullets, powders, cases, primers, AND, how to determine the appropriate COL for one's individual rifle. Now I was once a not entirely incompetent shooter myself ;) and let me just tell you, Randy knows what the hell he's talking about- his counsel and advice made me and my rifle, better. Been a long time, but once again, THANKS Randy .
A great story, thank you for sharing it with us. I hope to go hunting out west someday (north Arkansas here). Thank you for another great video. Sure is nice to see things like this to kinda air my mind out from all the mess going on in the world these days. God bless you and your family.
Well done Sir and congratulations on a fine hunt. Y'all will be enjoying some wonderful meals with this Elk meat. And Cathy, thank you so much for sharing your recipe! I can't wait to try this with my Deer meat and heart. Stay well and God Bless you both.
That’s really great that you’re still out there hunting like that. I hear so many people who are half your age saying they don’t have many years left to hunt.
This is Cathy, The Real Gunsmith's Wife: I need to work on my video skills, figure out how to do that successfully. So far I've been way less than happy with my attempts. It is something I do plan to do, but want it done well enough to watch! ;) Thanks for watching.
Thanks Randy for taking us along on your Elk hunt. Which would you pick Barnes or Nosler Partition for accuracy in a 25-06? Thanks Cathy for your recipe. 👍
Nice work Randy. Those side by sides sure make life easier. I have one out here on my place and it sure makes taking care of things easier. I have never taken it hunting but I suspect I will someday.
Our Pennsylvania Muzzeloader season came in today it’s doe only. As luck would have it a massive 10-12 point walked past my blind at 35-40 yards and stood there. Im thinking about a crossbow and carrying both
Great video, thank you for sharing! The partition is excellent. I also think the Barnes TSX, TTSX, and LRX are as well. Honorable mentions that perform just as well: Swift A-frame, Hammer, Federal Terminal Ascent
I’ve watched a lot of elk, deer, and pronghorn die to LRXs, TSXs, TTSXs, and GMXs. I’m now using 180 grain CXs in 30-06. Recently euthanized a moose for work with 127 grain LRXs in 6.5 creedmoor, as it was what I had, but it worked very well. I like the CXs and LRXs best due to higher BCs which leads to more retained velocity and energy down range. I’ve never killed anything over 350 yard’s though, so it’s really a wash for me.
@@phild9813 in 2005, 2006, 2007 my brother and I euthanized pronghorn with the 110 Barnes TSX from our 270s using IMR4350, 25 inch barrels. More than impressive. all pronghorns dropped. I can't say that for the tipped versions. I've had some drop some run a little distance but every game animal with the TSX was DRT. I'm guessing expansion was just better, quicker?
Thank you for sharing your story of the hunt. I too am a well seasoned hunter myself. Every year as I get ready I’m thinking will this be my last? I have some health issues myself as do all of us seasoned hunters. God bless and good luck!
As whippersnappers, how many of us thought that far ahead to "wonder how old I'll be before I have to stop hunting?" Not until age creeps up on us and we see friend after friend either have to stop hunting because of health issues, or death, does it start to enter our minds. Cathy can hunt, but not like she used to, as she's had chronic health issues for 24 years. But, when able to draw a cow elk tag or antelope tag, she's still out there. Thanks for watching.
Dandy bull! Sometimes when your working up bull you wish they were the size of a deer. Then when you go to the freezer for backstrap you wish it was an elephant 😂
Randy sir here in Tn we have a draw a tag elk hunt but the way people talk about it a person has a better chance of winning the lottery than getting drawn for this hunt in East Tn. You know me having the triple bypass surgery last year and then finding the cancer in my back has made me start thinking about something like a bucket list of mine. I’m going to try to get out and do some stuff that I’ve wanted to do for a few years now. I don’t know what the future holds for me but I’ve had a hunt I’ve wanted to do for several years now and that’s go to Canada and grizzly or Kodiak bear hunting with my bow. LORD willing that is Amen 🙏. We’ll see before long if it’s possible or not.
From Randy and Cathy: We are sorry to hear about your health issues. Cathy is a cancer survivor. Our suggestion is to look up Chris Wark "Chris Beat Cancer" and his Square One series on healing cancer naturally, as he and many, many have done, is available free on FB this month. Even if someone follows standard Western Medicine protocol, his advice will be so very helpful. He was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer over 16 years ago, told he had 6 mo to live even with slash, burn and poison protocol. He declined. Stepped out and did a lot of research. He is amazing as are the others he interviews who have reversed their bad prognosis. I didn't know about him when I went through my ordeal 10 years ago. God bless you and keep you strong. May you fill your bucket list with joy and adventure.
I used to use Nosler Partitions, as well as my brother, and then something changed, and they would no longer kill like they did, and wouldnt bleed. I started using other bullets that work
Here in Utah my son just killed his bull elk at 75 yards with a 7 mag and I loaded his bullets with big partitions he took it down with one shot then it stood back up and he shot it in the neck hit the bone and it went back down but it made cutting the head off pretty easily
Oehler, not only for their fine craftmanship and excellent readings, but the very few times I've had to send in for repairs the turnaround time has been outstanding! I've used it for decades and it is as accurate now as when new. Thanks for watching!
Do you shoot with a loop sling? Hasty? Seated? kneeled? Offhand? Shooting stick? I used to shoot without aide of my sling but missed a couple, since I have started using my Leather Military 1903 sling looped for longer shots and hasty for my usual 100 yard shot.
Hi, You are a great story teller- and a teller of great stories. Will you mount the elk head? or will you sell it to a taxidermist ? or? AND how much is that mount worth?
We don't have room for more full head mounts. Cut the rack off and will mount the rack on one of the beams in the house. Not sure how much the mounts are worth these days. Thanks for watching.
The 175 Partition will work well at 850 yards, starts out at 3200 fps. That said, that far is really pushing the boundaries, as there are too many variables, despite what all the gadget people will have you believe, for a shot that far to be a good choice. Watch, for instance, the video from a few years ago titled "Dancing Clouds" that Cathy posted on this channel. There are currents exactly like that, with no clouds to give any indication. No way to adjust for that. Good shooting and thanks for watching.
Yes, H4831, IMR4831, RL22, H100. Work up gradually. Some of these are getting harder and harder to find. Cathy suggests putting your search in quotation marks and add for sale, so, for instance, "IMR4831 powder for sale". We are a lot more apt to find something by searching that way. Oh, we still get a lot of "out of stock", "no backorder", but we've found components a lot easier this way. Thanks for watching.
Hey, I am happy that you are succesful, hunting and gunsmithing Congratulations! I enjoy your " get of my lawn" rants😂. You have my respect. But you are wasting your time making fun of or complaining about " these new cartridges". Take a deep breathe, turn off fox news, turn off the radio. Pour your favorite beverage, and enjoy the views you have in those mountains. You are very blessed but are focused up on what others do to much.
From The Real Gunsmith's Wife: First of all we don't watch mainstream news nor listen to the radio except for music. Randy was asked to start the channel to focus on the things he has a passion for. The huge majority of people thank us for his time and information, so I guess he'll keep on keepin' on, talking about his passion, educating, enjoying the family, the views, the animals, the sport and vocation he was blessed with. Thanks for watching.
He's tough, on the downhill side. But with tenderizing, he's good. Cathy cooked the heart, not corned though, in the Intant Pot, pressure, and because of our altitude of 6,000 ft, for 1 hour, 10 min. Succulent, fork tender. Thanks for watching.
The women in my family are not only good hunters, they are all very supportive of hunting. And my wife, Cathy, can make a better cow call with just her vocal cords than with any commercial call. But I get your point. Thanks for watching.
When you finally retire or sadly pass away as I remember you said no one will own it but may I buy everything that has to do with your 7mmx404wappati express ? That is one of the best summations I've ever heard. Well done sir and every hunter here will have a chuckle reading it.
HEY RANDY -What chronographs do you recommend?
Oehler, not only for their fine craftmanship and excellent readings, but the very few times I've had to send in for repairs the turnaround time has been outstanding! I've used it for decades and it is as accurate now as when new.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing,Good job! Take care of yourself and keep shootn!
Mr. Selby. Question on the 7mm-404 Wapiti Express. Is the round named for the town of Wapiti Wyoming, or the animal, or possibly both? Thank you!
Both. "Town" is a stretch. A scattered community, though it is filling up, especially the last few years.
Thanks for watching.
Good. Hunting. Story.
Do you shoot with a loop sling? Hasty? Seated? kneeled? Offhand? Shooting stick? I used to shoot without aide of my sling but missed a couple, since I have started using my Leather Military 1903 sling looped for longer shots and hasty for my usual 100 yard shot.
I don't use a loop sling to shoot. I shoot off hand or use some rest, backpack, limb, tree, rock, etc.
Thanks for watching and Happy New Year!
Great job to
WOW That's Awesome Randy! Thanks for sharing your story and wisdom as always and thanks Cathy for the recipes!!
So what is the minimum velocity the 175 gr Partion needs to fully work?
A 300 win mag necked down to .284 would still shy in the speed dept?
The 175 Partition will work well at 850 yards, starts out at 3200 fps. That said, that far is really pushing the boundaries, as there are too many variables, despite what all the gadget people will have you believe, for a shot that far to be a good choice. Watch, for instance, the video from a few years ago titled "Dancing Clouds" that Cathy posted on this channel. There are currents exactly like that, with no clouds to give any indication. No way to adjust for that.
Good shooting and thanks for watching.
@@TheRealGunsmith OK, so in doing the math.... or trying to do the math, this Partion works down to around 1800 fps?
Great video once again. @Randy in your opinion what is the best twist rate for the Big 7’s with 175gr Nosler Partitions?
1:9".
Thanks for watching.
Turn playback speed up to 1.25x.
Looks like hes gunna be some good eating 👍
I'm loading 7mm rem mag with a 160cx running 3250fps how do you think this will work for elk
Yes, they are good for elk. Good hunting.
Thanks for watching.
So what you’re saying is my 7mm rem mag I may as well get rid of and buy a bigger gun if I want to hunt elk?
From my years of experience, yes.
Thanks for watching.
Omg I'll help you brother ! I'm 63 year old I live Michigan Dearborn
I’m a Nosler feller myself
Is there a safe load to get 180 grain 300 win mag to 3100 fps
Randy's cartridge must be a screamer. I hope he does a video on it.
I be driving and popping out caps at deers. Pop pop pop yah boy
You wouldn’t believe how a 100-120lb deer can wear a feller out. It will wear anybody out in no time.
I pick 7 RUM over STW any day
How is the meat on this age elk
He's tough, on the downhill side. But with tenderizing, he's good. Cathy cooked the heart, not corned though, in the Intant Pot, pressure, and because of our altitude of 6,000 ft, for 1 hour, 10 min. Succulent, fork tender.
Thanks for watching.
Female throwing a wrench in the gears of your hunt. Elk cows sound like they are related to human cows…😂
The women in my family are not only good hunters, they are all very supportive of hunting. And my wife, Cathy, can make a better cow call with just her vocal cords than with any commercial call.
But I get your point.
Thanks for watching.
Just plain common sense
They stole your technology sir
Yep, they did. Water over the bridge.
Thanks for watching.
