Start of 7MM for Big Game

- Randy talks about some of the history about 7mm’s being used for big game hunting. He was great friends with Les Bowman, who was instrumental in starting the use of the caliber for hunting big game in North America and later around the world.
Les worked with Remington to bring the 7MM out in 1962.
In 1984 Randy also created and developed his own 7mmx.404 Wapiti Express.
This is a longer video, watch it in segments if you must, to take full advantage of information shared.

Ive hunted California for the last 30 years and I live in a cabin in the Sierra nevadas. About ten years ago I started noticing more wounded deer around. Last year I saw a man glassing a ravine and he put his rifle on his tripod and shot at a deer at least 1200 yards away. He hit the deer. It ran several hundred yards and up over the ridge never to be seen again. This long range hunting campaign is unethical and totally wrong. I don't shoot anything past 300 but I think if your a great shot and choose your bullet 500 isnt insane but 1000 yards or more? These hunters are just stroking thier ego and its destroying the wildlife. Ty for bringing attention to this. Not that anyone will listen. It makes me very sad. What happened to learning to stalk and being a hunter? These guys are just shooters who wound and maim our majestic creatures.
Game assassins, not hunters
I agree with you, I think it’s disgusting, if they want to shoot distances like that, go to a target range !
Agreed. I've only taken one shot out to just over 500 yards once. The innovations in glass and BC of bullets makes everyone think they are snipers.
You know what makes me sad? It’s Californians, grandstanding and spreading their elitism everywhere they go, and not worrying about the real problems hunters face, oh, like the anti-hunting campaign that’ve been launched from the liberal hubs in the states Californian hunters are grandstanding from.

Thank you Randy,
One again you are 100% correct.
I love and have hunted the California Sequoias, Sierras and Coastland.
And have lost many well hit animals using many different bullets in my Winchester M70 chambered in 7mm RM. 20 years ago I rebarreled all my 7mm RM to 300 Weatherby Magnums. I haven’t lost any game since then. Thank you for educating the new kids on the facts of life and hunting. I hope they listen, hear and learn from your years and wisdom.
May God bless and Mary keep you and your family.
We need more people like Randy with practical knowledge that are willing to educate the “experts!”
Been shoot n Elk since 1988 with a 7mmSTW.. 175gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claws..
7MM on a 8MM Rem Mag, 👍 same performance as a 7mm-300 Wby. Fine cartridge. For new rifle buyers the 28 Nosler will do the same
Absolutely Riveting Lecture PROFESSOR. I couldn’t agree more. Thank you for sharing your Knowledge, Wisdom and Experiences.
You keep talkin Mr. Selby, people and those like us will keep listening, thanks for continuing to share your wealth
Our local gun shop, is a morning coffee hangout.
Like religion & politics, the feller talking the most & loudest about guns, ballistics & hunting/shooting, surely knows the least.
All the old boys who know their business, accomplished marksmen & hunters, just stand there shaking their heads. Things have become utterly ridiculous.
If I hear words like Tacti-cool, mil rads, freedom seeds or someone calls a gun a pew pew, I gotta go.
I cannot stay or I will get triggered.
So much garbage content on You Tube.
Thank you Randy, for putting solid quality facts out there. 👍
One of my biggest TURNOFFS regarding firearms talk is the word "sexy". These things are tools, they are inanimate, anyone who thinks about sex while discussing them is a deviant, or a rapist, or both!
It may have good lines and be comfortable in the hands, but sexy it is not.

Thanks again Randy and Cathy. Absolutely another amazing video. I’ve been saving up for Randy to build me a 7-300 weatherby or 300 weatherby on a sako or Winchester action for my bighorn sheep hunts in Alberta Canada. Absolutely can’t wait! God bless.
Thank you for sharing your in-depth hands on knowledge of this subject. Newer is NOT necessarily better. thank you again for sharing your experience .It's truly appreciated.
Could not agree more! Thanks again Randy and Cathy you guys greatly bless us with your time and knowledge. I hope and pray that one day I'll be able to have a rifle and cartridge made by Randy as I believe he makes the best in the world. God bless and thank you again for this wonderful video
Oh I dream of a custom Randy rifle…… aaaaahhhh
Good luck getting that rifle made by Randy. I would like the same 👍
Randy, you are the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for educating the masses!!!!!!
Thank you Randy and Cathy for producing another video. I love hearing the back stories of cartridge development and Randy you have participated in development of many cartridges with key people of the time. I appreciate hearing the history of your experiences. Thank you!
What a great advocate for the hunters and great calibers thank you sir for your experience and knowledge.
Thank you Randy, I just watched my first one of your videos. I agree 100% with your comments on long range big game shooting.
My first centerfire rifle was also a Herter's Model U-9 barreled action in .30-06 and a Herter's semi-inleted walnut stock blank that I bought in 1967. In 1977 I had Les Bauska in Kalispel re-chamber it to .30 Gibbs. That rifle put a couple dozen elk in my freezer, all with less than 300 yard shots.
Such a great video and you are stating what needs to be said. I have been preaching this as well for a while. Love your videos Randy and Cathy. Keep it up. We need to keep this recklessness in check. God bless.
Thank you for the knowledge.
Your 100% right,, thank you for bringing this to light,,,the longest shot I ever tried was 3 hundred yards at a caribou,, with my 280 express,,140 gr.nosler,,one shot,,
Was that back when Remington was trying to revive the 280 Remington by renaming it the 7mm Remington Express? I’ve been a 280 Rem and 7mm Rem Mag fan and user since 1984.
Thank you Sir. In central Louisiana we have no need for 900 yard accuracy and I don’t like punching paper but I do love reloading and teaching my son and grandson this hobby. I’ve never been a fan of Nosler ballistic tip bullets but I do love the partition in several calibers and have never had one fail me. Thanks for the mater of fact way you address a problem. WB
thank you for another great vid. paul
Thank you Randy, always love your information.
Interesting information, when I start running out of powder I get some good coffee. 2x speed works well also!
Your description of Grizzly behavior helps explain a few tragedies and near tragedies that have taken place here in Montana in the last decade or so, some of it very near my home.
I truly appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and keep your videos coming please.
Another outstanding information and well said, on point about these wiz kids know it all. I'm not a hunter I'm a target shooter and to listen to this content is gratifying. More people should take the time to listen on what you have to say
I must add to my comment if you were to shoot a ballistic gel elk body, you would have to tightly wrap cowhide around it cowhide is tough and any soft skin bullet would explode immediately hitting tough hide but thanks again I’ve learned so much from you Randy thank you
As always valuable information for a 7mm fan
My note pad is getting full. I need a three ring binder if Randy keeps up dropping all these Nuggets. Thank you Randy.
Just imagine how many cheat books Randy has, probably as many as the Catholic Church lol
I feel the same way, every time randy does a new video I get the notepad out. He ought to be glad I’m not his neighbor, I’d be over everyday wearing out my welcome with questions. The guy has REAL WORLD experience and knowledge.
Randy, I believe you need to write a book
Randy, I absolutely love the information you share with us. I am not a long range shooter I always say someday I’ll go out west but the reality I may never make it there. I’m a Midwest Whitetail deer hunter I agree with you with the ethics of all these hot shots. We have them in the Midwest to. I would love to see some testing done. They have these targets now that people shoot that are real life like human bodies but you can get them in animal bodies and study how the bullet functions on impact, I would love to see you get some of these targets and make shots at it at long distance and actually show what certain bullets on ballistic targets do and measure vital impact I am just mentioning this just to show the know it alls.
I just love this guy.
Love your no bullshit content Randy. Keep it coming. Id like to come down and meet you. I'm outside Billings so it'd be worth the drive to meet you
Ballistic coefficients work for me 😮
I agree anything over 500 yards should be left alone, or get closer
Get closer …. Thats hunting !
The HORNANDY INTERLOCK is a fine fine bullet like the Nosler . Have used them.for years and they JUST PLAIN WORK.
Thanks for all your nolege
Thank you for your knowledge and stories. I truly enjoy them. I am curious if you have any stories/opinion on muzzleloaders or other traditional hunting methods. I’m wanting to get into hunting with a 54 cal. Hawken
@The Real Gunsmith Randy do you have plans of making a video for the 270 Winchester?
Excellent caliber.
In other videos I've talked about the .270 Win, with various powders, bullets and barrel lengths.
I will take the idea under advisement, a .270 alone video.
Thanks for watching.
@The Real Gunsmith
I am wondering what the best case dimension/capacity is best for use in short barrels ie. 20-22” rifles that are fitted with suppressors. This is something I am interested in; but can be difficult to find the sweet spot for. I am not talking about a 1000 yard rifle, but a reasonable, lightweight rifle with decent ballistics for 500 yds and in. Thank You for your contribution to the hunting and shooting community.
Randy thanks for sharing your knowledge and insight I don't know if you did any talks on the 28 nosler if not iam interested in your opinion on that caliper thanks
Hey Randy, I have a 7 mm rum and I shoot the 175 grain speer Grand slam. I've always loved speer bullets. They've made good hunting bullets in my opinion. Most of them anyways, but what I found is I have to clean my damn gun all the time and when I say all the time every six shots is that normal for a caliber of this size? Thanks for your videos brother
Speaking lots of truths in this episode.
Agreed. I would never take a shot past 500 at game and I haven’t even bothered attempting that. I’ve always been able to get to at least 350.
Im the same but mine is 350y. I struggle getting 1moa at the range and its not ethical for me personally to shoot at majestic animals furher. If I cant stalk in I still recall an amazing encounter! I mainly bush stalk here in New Zealand
Second time watching this. There are no words to express how blessed we are to have you. The PRC world is wrecking our sport. Incredible. Hunting is going down the drain. I live in Idaho and our good tags are becoming “once in a lifetime” hunts. It’s easier to draw sheep the Owyhee’s than it is to draw the best mule buck tag.
Thank you for being exceptional. I refuse to watch anyone else. They are all on the take from Hornady and the like. I would not even entertain the notion of purchasing a Hornady product. I have some old 140 BTSP in .277 that I wouldn’t part with. But the new stuff is a ruse.
Please keep up the good work! Your fans have your back!

Thank you Randy for the great videos that you put out. In my eye's if some one has to shot at an animal at a 1000 yards they are extremely shity and unethical hunters. Not to mention that they are damn lazy. Thank you for all of your knowledge on rifles and reloading information. I have changed some of my reloading techniques. Thank you Randy & Cathy for putting out such great videos. Stay safe god bless.
Great info as always randy.... you ought to build a 7mmx378 Weatherby
Send him a check.
Of course he can. But not a very efficient cartridge. You can Neck down a 338 Lapua and do the same. But who does. The standard 28 Nosler(in a 3.6-3.8" Mag action) about the ideal as FPS and availability
I own a 378 Wby and looking at that case as a 30-378 it’s already too overbore. I chronographed my 300 RUM 26” barrel hand loads vs a 30-378 28” barrel hand loads and they were within 50 fps. The Wby uses a lot more powder for nothing.
A 7mm-378 would be wasting powder when we already have the 7mm STW and 7mm RUM.
wowzier, pointed right at the wiz kids and wanna be elk hunters! I love it. what happened to the fair chase stalking? many of the young hunters that are drinking the eld-x bullet hipe, are going to be tick off with randy speech, but it is the truth!
Sir you are so relevent and needed in an age of marketing BS and sales driven hype. These new cals are fun and have merit but you truely see the big picture!
I just watched the hornady podcast on the 7PRC a few days ago. They said they couldn't neck down the 300PRC to make the 7PRC because the pressure would be too high. And if they dropped the charge in the case enough to drop the pressure than there would be too much space, causing inconsistent muzzle velocity. I'm not a handloader, what do you think about this?
You have to remember they need to build something that will shoot in virtually in any rifle package. It has been said that once you get a 7mm above 3050 fps with a 180 class bullet it gets finicky. Doesnt mean you can't get it to shoot but this is factory ammo. It has to shoot well for everyone's rifle. I have experienced this myself in other chamberings.
As Wiliam Bendex on the Life of Riley show said. What a revolten development this is.
Would a 7mm be your go to for moose and grizzly also?
No. A .338 with 224 Nolser Partitions.
Thanks for watching.
@@TheRealGunsmith is it possible to load a 45-70 up enough to work on moose and grizzly out of a lever action, or, would it never be powerful enough?
Hornady didn’t want to neck a 375 Ruger to 7mm they talked about it in a podcast. I believe because it wouldn’t offer anything over the 28 Nosler. They wanted a medium action caliber it’s basically an improved 7mm rem mag. I don’t know anyone at Hornady that said here is the 7mm PRC go shot elk at 1k.
There was a video I watched 2 guys compare the 7 PRC vs 7 Rem Mag. The PRC didn’t win.
I thank you for sharing your information. What books or materials would you recommend for reading about ballistics and other information.
Nosler reloading manual and Sierra. I've not seen a bad one. Just keep in mind their data is not set in stone, but caution and knowledge have to be combined.
Thanks for watching.

I have worked up and loaded for many, many .270's, Win and Wby.

I never shoot at any game animal farther than the point blank range of my rifles. I never pull the trigger unless I am positive that I can make a humane kill. 300 yards for my standard rounds and 350 for my magnums. My newly bought old BDL 7mm Remington magnum shooting factory ammunition is just over minute of angle at 100 yards.
I am positive that I can work up a load to better my groups using the fireformed brass. I wish the Selbys a very happy new year!

Please explain hydrostatic shock.
Also A fascinating study by South Carolina’s Department of Natural Resources backs up Quinlan’s recommendation. Researchers collected data on 493 harvested deer to determine the most successful firearms and ammunition. Among their findings, they determined that deer shot with soft-pointed bullets traveled an average of 16 fewer yards after being shot than deer shot with heavier monolithic bullets (27 yards vs. 43 yards). In addition, 58% of deer shot with soft bullets dropped in their tracks, compared with only 40% of deer shot with hard bullets.
Hydrostatic shock explained: It is a made up term. There is no such thing. If you do not believe me, I challange you to find the term in ANY published physics book.
Also, the term it self makes no sence. If they had called it hydroDynamic shock, than at least it would make some physical sence.

Yall still ain't got this grizzly bear issue sorted out ? Every time I listen to one of your fantastic videos and talks I am anticipating good news and sound game management practices to be shared... I'm so sorry that's not the case. When will the corruption be squelched back to tolerable levels? Thank God for your voice and ability to discern rightly. God bless you and yours...
"Sound management" is overshadowed by greenie activists and liberal judges, from people all around US and other countries crying to them that if there is a season they will all be killed and be no more. As it, the Feds kill off a # of problem bears each year. If tags were sold, and bears hunted, there'd be fewer problem bears.
The big "cry" is that we are living in their territory and their habitat is shrinking. Yet the National Forests and National Parks aren't shrinking at all and the area these bears have to wander is huge. But with more and more bears, they are expanding their range, into habitation that hasn't seen them in over 100 years. And while there are people there, IF the bears were hunted, they would be leery of people and not as apt to cause problems.
And boar griz kill a great number of young cubs to get the female to cycle earlier than when she has them with her.
I'd like to say we'll see an end to this, but the way things are going, I am not sure it will happen in my life time or ever.
Thanks for watching.
@@TheRealGunsmiththere has to be rich ranch owners paying off politicians to keep the elk numbers up on the other side of Wyoming. Either for their own personal hunting parties or they’re leaf licking tree huggin’ Kamala voters.
My current hunting cartridge is the 7mm REM Mag. I have many 30 cal cartridges that I have used in the past, and I guess like many others, love to switch to other calibers just because I can. In my hunting tenure, the longest shot I have ever taken has been just over 400 yards with a 300 win mag. That 5 point bull was a welcome addition to my freezer. With these new cartridges, the idea of accuracy out to 1000 yards and beyond is deceptive. That cartridge may be able reach out that far but can YOU? There is no need to take that chance and I would challenge anyone to prove that that animal even knows you exist at that range. So, don’t be lazy and stalk that animal within an acceptable distance for a humane kill!
AMEN brother, preach it!! It's a shame to see what has been going on with all these longe range advocates.
I asked Ron Spomer if he included your 7x404 Wapiti Express in his book on 7mm cartridges that he’s publishing. I didn’t get a response
Lolol , that ain’t gonna happen 😂
No because that 7x404 is a full on wildcat cartridge. May be a great round but no standardization. Handloaders dream, that's it!
Ken Waters said the 7mm balances out at 160 grains or so. Can't argue with that. But..175 grain really puts the punch on big animals as long as you aren't pushing for extreme distance. 2900 FPS isn't exactly slow, and those Interlocks from Hornady really are a decent game bullet. But building a rifle and cartridge to do a special job can never be a bad thing.
Depends on the cartridge, For 7-08, 145 Grns, 7Rem Mag, 168 Grns, 28 Nosler 175-180. But you can interchange. Bit heavier and slower or lighter and faster. Endless combinations. A 175 in 28 Nosler about 3200FPS, right there with Randys 7MM-404 Wapiti
John Wayne reincarnate. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.
So what are your thoughts on 28 Nosler and 7 RUM? Then can you settle 7mm v.s. 30 cal efectiveness on elk? Is 7mm adequate?
28 Nosler almost identical to the 7 RUM. But the 7 RUM scarce, and the 28 Nosler gaining up. Got a RUM? You can rebarrel for 28 Nosler. Reloading cheaper. 28 Nosler 175 Grns about 3200FPS and the 7RUM faster (Bigger cartridge) both about the same as Randys 7MM-404 Wapiti. You didnt't pay atention to Randy about the 7MM vs 30 Cal. Both are excelent. Back in the day, there weren't good 7mm bullets. Today a 175 Grns 7MM vs a 180-190 Grns 30 Cal driven at over 3100 FPS perfect performance for whatever to way out yonder. Bullet placement. A 30-378 Wby won't bring down any game faster if hit wrong
28 Nosler, 7 RUM, loaded with correct bullets for game, of 175 gr weight. In normal game ranges inside 400-500 yards they are both good. Of course, with proper shot placement.
30 cal, .300 Mag loaded with game bullets of 180 to 200 gr weight.
Thanks for watching.
@TheRealGunsmith OK, but I thought you favored 1800 fp Energy on elk? The 7 Rem Mag does that at 400. So, for normal hunting ranges, what's wrong with the Big 7? I thought you were saying one needed a bigger 7 Mag at 1800 fp Energy at longer ranges? That's why I asked about 28 Nosler/7RUM. I'm not into sniping at animals anyway. I do like 7 Rem Mag as a do lots cartridge with less recoil, and guess what I really want to know are your 7mm thoughts. Is the 7mm really enough gun? Every elk I've shot with 338 Win was 1 and done. Those shot with Big 7 took multiple hits. 3 to be exact! These examples are within 100 to 400 yards. Makes me think about giving up on 7mm, and regardless of energy? Nearly 25 years ago, at an outdoor seminar on hunting Alaska, the talkers all said Alaskan hunting calls for 30 caliber and up, with the 30-06 the starting point. They said lesser calibers were slow to kill. I guess that's why I chose bigger guns for my hunting in Africa, Canada, Alaska, Montana, and Washington. 300 Win, 338 Win, 375 H&H/Ruger, and for a while, 416 Remington. Ethics require I kill as quickly as possible. I do not like having to shoot an elk 3 times. But as I get older, I must admit heavy recoil is less fun! (I never use Sissy-slots for hunting) I keep thinking about the 7 Rem Mag and wonder if I should give it another go? Elk, deer, black bear, moose. But not if 7mm is marginal. So, based on your experience, HUNTING, is 7mm really enough, which 7mm cartridge? Or does 30 caliber and up really outclass 7mm? I have several rifles and could settle on my 300 Weatherby, along with its thunder!
I prefer the 7raum and the 28nosler. I use a 7rsaum in unlimited class 1000yd benchrest and it is not only an extremely accurate design but is also one of the most efficient cartridges made. I push 183smk out its 30" barrel at 3020fps with 61gr of H4831sc barrel after barrel which I specifically use Brux barrels for my 7mm cartridge builds and i get 1200 to 1400 shots a barrel. The 28nosler long range hunting rifles i have built and tuned for customers using berger 195eol at just over 3200fps with reloader 33 have been nothing short of amazing either. As for 7rem mag i always preferred the .264win and even more as 264cal bullet options became better
Randy sir, i dont know the details of the smart aleks and sierra... but posterity is incredibly important to avoid tempting insecure children to falsify the value of arguments.... i suggest the BC of a bullet.. never changes due to the physics of what BC is... but the product of the BC is directly effected by many factors at all ranges down range. i am a 300 ultra mag kind of guy, so i certainly agree with you on all these things. when I was at TSJC.. ... i was the RA at Romero hall... i was a poor boy.. it was the only way i could make ends meet ... i also took care of the library... what a library. they had a willow tree outside of romero ... and an incredibly beautiful maple tree on the walk up to the cafeteria. some of the best memories of my life. the cotton woods and english ivy... ... well ... just gorgeous.... cheers
You do the gunsmith course? Supposedly one of the best in the US.
I’m a 338/50BMG Improved fan. Shoot hand swaged 360 grain bullets in a 12” to 4” gain twist 32” barrel @ 5800 fps. Great elk cartridge out to 2700 yards. Only problem is the four horse team it takes to lug it up and down the mountains. Not satisfied with the limited energy, my next rendition will be a 25 mm on the 40 mm improved bofors case. Calculations says it ought to be good out to two miles with a 3600 grain bullet. Haven’t figured out how to get it up the mountain yet, but it looks like a camel will be the best option. Okay…enough sarcasm 😂. When you said shots at 400 yards and less, you recaptured my attention. That also made me realize the 7mm rem mag more than ample for the job.
the course has changed a lot since i was there from what im told, modernized a lot of the machining instruction, which is probably very good.... yes I learned how to make just about anything from scratch with little to no tools... what it really takes to do stuff right... like i said... it was one of my best life experiences by far.@@brianhoxworth3881

No big deal, Specially the 5.8 K Fps(Guess miss tipped 5 for 3 K 🤔. Still pulling my leg at 3.8K) You can alway build a light 338. 225 grns Bullet cartridge for whatever walks on earth. Bit lighter than the BMG
These new PRC cartridges are designed for what they're named after, PRC (Precision Rifle Competition) and nothing more... All the Sitka camo'd, puffy coat wearing, tripod "hunters" are the ones that are promoting these cartridges for hunting. Most of them do this because they're afraid of recoil, and were not spanked as children...Get a pair.
Hornady has a huge advertising budget to pay these dudes. I’ll never understand why they don’t promote their excellent all copper hunting bullets.
300 Weatherby two hundred gr. Nosler partition or accubond
What ever happened to closing the distance. I’ve hunted Elk and Moose with a 6.5x55 with 155gr Lapua bullets. The shots ranged from 100-250yds all one shot kills. No sense in decreasing your odds of an ethical shot whether you can make the shot or not.
Based on hunting big game since 1981 I agree.
hammer 7mm 160-170gr copper?
Ballistics coefficient point at 16:40
Is it even hunting anymore when the animal is 500 plus yards away?
It is if you practice at those distances, and it really helps to increase your range for filling the freezer.
Real rifleman appreciate bullet design and choose proper bullets for the task at hand. If it’s for targets it doesn’t matter how the bullet performs after it hit a target. But hunting bullets are designed to perform and kill within a certain window of velocities.
These born yesterday long-rangers either forget the killing factor or have never killed a big game animal. Real hunters want the quickest, cleanest kill possible. So they know from experience you have to use the skills learned through hunting to get closer or call the game closer. We bugle in moose, call in elk or grunt & rattle in deer.
My main hunting rifle for 15 years is in 300 RUM and I always bring my 7mm Rem Mag backup. That 300 RUM has killed 14 big Alberta bucks and 2 cow moose. Longest shot 350ish closest 35 yards. All with 180 grain Swift Sciroccos or 180 grain Nosler Accubonds. Even with a laser if it’s 400 yards I know I can get closer.
I’ll leave my disgust for Hornady’s cartridge/bullet whoring for another day.
Edit: My hunting is in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
What exactly is 7mm wapiti express?
It is a cartridge I developed around 35 years ago. I've spoken of it before, along with development, and there is a video about my .338x.404 Wapiti Express on Patreon. It is a multi-step process to form brass. Brass companies don't take it on, so I can't offer it for anyone at this time.
I believe if you watch the .404 Jeffrey video, and some of the 7MM videos I've done you can learn more. [Links can't be shown here, or I'd post that.]
Thanks for watching.
7 Mag still hard to beat. Guns are loud and they kick. If you don’t like that, get golf clubs.
And now you can't find anything in 7 STW or 7 RUM...which are about the same and are close to what you are talking about. I get it. If you handload you can do it but there is not anything in factory loadings that will come close. All of the promotion of high BC bullets with not enough energy at range is not responsible.
If I only hunted bull elk or moose I’d probably use a 340 weatherby mag although my 7STW with 160gr Barnes at 3100fps would probably work too.
Whilst I really appreciate this man’s ethics towards animals and what he says about energy on target is absolutely correct. But if you put a 175gr interlock sp up against a 175 eldx at the 700yds that he claimed all 4 bullets were the same drop, the difference in these two bullets at this distance is 16inch of drop, and a difference of 523ftlb of energy!! I can’t help but think the only difference in these two bullets is the ballistic coefficient,
The fact is, comparing B.T. high BC and flat base bullets is not what you compare. And the ELDX 175 is a poor game cartridge, so it is immaterial.
I compared 175 gr Hornady SP, 175 gr Speer GS , 175 gr Nosler Part, semi PT and 175 gr Nosler Spitzer. There was around 100 pts difference in so-called computed ballistics.
But proof is in the pudding, my results are face value, not computed.
With todays scopes and data, one can correct for BC, of what it is up to a point. But the BC changes many times over distance and situations [Hornady had a good article on it] and so relying on computer generated drop values is a crap shoot. Only shooting will give you the values. AND that will change as conditions change.
Thanks for watching.

I understand everything your saying about BC and yes you should definitely check computerised data against real world data ie shooting for yourself, problem is 75% of people out there don’t have the skills to shoot far enough to check the real difference between the two, also if your not hand loading with nice single digit SD there will be a difference out far as well, depending on weather the wind is blowing from left to right or right to left has a huge influence in bullet drop, again 75% wouldn’t understand, but for the most part people shouldn’t be taking shots at game at distances where all this comes into play anyway! Its a joke that people think they can put a scope on with elevation dials and think they can shoot animals at long range, they have no morals and are straight up wankers!! I run the Hornady app for my drop charts and aslong as you have all the correct data it asks for I have found it very accurate out to 1500yds for target fun, as far as the eldx being a poor game bullet I can’t agree sorry, I’m in Australia and we don’t have elk but we do have 6 different species of deer some of those being tuff animals and I have used lots of different bullets over the years and in the cartridges I’ve tried the eldx in they have worked great with most of the times complete pass threw and the animal dropped right there, when they haven’t passed threw they will turn the chest cavity into soup and again the animal will drop right there!! My favourite bullet is the nosler accubond which I use in 257 weatherby 110gr, 300 weatherby 180gr, and 338 win mag 225gr, all are 1/2moa loads and work great on all animals I’ve taken with them but they will also blow up sometimes, it’s all fun tho and I love hunting and ballistics thank you for trying to keep people real about the distances they should be shooting at game, I would love to hunt an elk one day and when I do it will not be shot at one ridge to another and will be hit with a proper size cartridge!!! Cheers
7mm Mashburn is the best. Holds 5 more grains of Retumbo than the 7mm Rem Mag holds. Nice Long neck. Perfect with Nosler 175 grain partition. Better than the 28 Nosler.
On paper 7mm past 300 yard has more energy the 300 Winchester but that just what charts show
Show me a man that can put 10/10 shots into a vital sized target in hunting conditions at 700yds…. and how much energy does the bullet still possess. Sad ethical state for 90+ % of hunters to do
Carlos Hathcock is about the only rifleman that I know that could do exactly that.

Paw paw has good knowledge, but he has some old timers.
You have a lot of puzzle pieces, you know how to put some of them together for a part of the picture that works. There are a lot more pieces that can make the picture complete.
Can you explains please. I want to learn. Thanks
@@Hunter4Life. so listening to a lot of his videos, he prefers a harder bullet going really fast. This is once combination of puzzle pieces that kills game. High BC bullets will kill game as well. There are three big advantages to high bc match quality bullets: retained velocity, better at resisting deflection in the wind, and a higher focus on a consistently built bullet. The higher retained velocity translates to more energy down range, less drop in vertical and less wind drift. All good things for a hunting scenario. You put those bullets in the right spot and the animal will die and can die quickly. A good podcast to listen to is one Hornady did on terminal ballistics. They go over what we are trying to effect as hunters to kill an animal. There are some other good channels out there like Long range hunting-the group on his bullet-gel analysis videos. Just some short takeaways, shot placement is #1, understanding how different bullets behave is crucial for picking shot placement. There is a lot of information out there. I could spew a lot more, but there are people out there that can put it in a way that is better than what I can in a UA-cam comment.

I appreciate your response. I’ll have to dig deep into that theory that a high bc number (can kill anything) that translates to a more aerodynamic projectile, with a thinner jacket, presumably, as they usually are to make them seem more consistent in construction, although a well constructed game bullet such as a Nosler Accubond Long Range, Barnes TTX, or perhaps a Federal Fusion, with the Nosler ABLR bullet having a high bc and is constructed strong enough to take large game at longer distances such as the distances Randy suggests seems to do all a Hornady high bc target bullet can do except actually penetrate deep and hold together creating a deep wound channel aiding in the expiration of the animal, such as a majestic Rosevelt elk or maybe a Shiras Moose that deserve a quick ethical kill and can buck the wind like any other high bc bullet.
I’ll stick to what has been proven time and time again. A well constructed consistently produced time again Nosler type bullet. I can correct for elevation with the quick dial of my custom dial of my scope that has been repeated dozens of times in the field practicing shots over and over preparing for my ek hunt in the near couple years.
@@Hunter4Life. I agree, it’s a big benefit to know your equipment and understand how to use it. For some reason it’s a big debate on what’s the best in a industry of few wrong answers. Instead of this bullet is terrible, it’s here is what it does, here’s how you need to aim on game to have best results. An example of this is my own 300 prc. I get an 8” group with factory 212 eldx ammo, I get a sub 1” group with the 225 eldm factory load with most being in the 1/2” group range. Personally I see that shooting the 212 would be irresponsible to shoot at game because of how the group it, so I need to understand how the eldm works and behave and aim accordingly. Behind the shoulder, in the ribs where it will fragment and tear the lungs and heart apart. Truth be told, any bullet can named and it’s probably killed some game animal at some point. It comes down to understanding your equipment and limitations of the equipment you use. Knowledge and confidence in your equipment is one of the intangibles that can really make a difference for any hunter or shooter.
Mr Randy, I would surely enjoy seeing you drop some of your knowledge and opinions on the 7mm RUM. I have just newly acquired one and am interested in your thoughts on it. Thanks for putting out your content. It's refreshing to listen to someone who shares the same aspects of hunting and shooting that I was taught and still adhere to yet today.
Please ask Randy if your 7 RUM barrel could be set back and rechambered to 28 Nosler(The 7 RUM is excelent, but not readily available)(If you reload, 300 RUM cases can be rezised for 7RUM) . The 28 Nosler about the same performance as the 7RUM but more available. In a Magnum lengh Action 3.6-3.8" you can seat out those long bullets(28 Nosler) in your action/magazine and gain performance. The simplest way around the lack of cartridges is Reloading. Simple, Fun, and Cheap. You can buy a reloading set for $250-$350 or $1000 if a loaded pocket. I started reloading back in the 1970's-1980's because factory ammo wouldnt shoot tight in my old US 1917 Enfield 30-06. Reloading got me my under 1". I have a project for a light weight cheap modern rifle build in 7MM . I have 3 choice cartridges 280AI, 7Rem Mag or 28 Nosler. Your 7 RUM would be the Ideal platform for such project. All you would need is a new barrel in 28 Nosler(Carbon Light weight?) The action is perfect, the magazine will take the 28 Nosler, Bolt face identical. A new Barrel $500 SS Steel to $1000+ for carbon wrapped. Pluss gunsmithing $. Reloading a Cheaper and fun proyect. Rebarreling $ more than the reloading. Nosler Reload Data 7RUM 175n Grns Bullet 3100+ Fps. 28 Nosler 3200+Fps. . BUT that can't be right(they raise the 28 performace over the RUM). The RUM is a bigger cartridge and should be a bit faster. If you get(7RUM) cartrtridges to buy, it's a Hotrod. Equal to Randys 7mm-404 Whapiti
@WillyK51 this guy is pooping on prc being failed cartridges. 28 noz, hahaha
I personally have a 7mm project. But it won't be any PRC unless it becomes as avalable as the 7 Rem Mag. The 7PRC, 7RM and the 7Weatherby are identical in performace. I even like the 280 AI (About 100 FPS slower than the 7PRC)(got plenty 30-06 cases arround)The only advantage I can find with the 7PRC is its shorter and with the same powder cap as the others and seats out longer bullets in a Std long action. For hotroding the 28 Nosler if the fastest(7RUM faster if you can find ammo) @@Jezus42
Thanks for the info. But, I already have a good supply of 7RUM ammo and all the supplies and reloading components to keep me in business for a long time with my RUM. I was just curious on Mr Randy's thoughts, seeing as how I can't remember him talking about it before. I do like the way you think though.@@WillyK51
The RUM family is based on the same case as the 7mm404 Wapiti he’s talking about, which is the 404 Jeffries case. Anything he says about that is in effect the 7mm RUM
👍
Nosler makes good hunting bullets but they are essentially unavailable. To be relevant they must be available. We really need to speak about alternatives. Speer still makes decent bullets at fair prices but they have actually cut back their selection.
Ups, End of getting ready for hunting season. Bullet stocks low right now, but Midway had the 7mm Accubons recently. If you get on the notiffy list can reload for next season. There are several 7mm options in loaded cartridges, Dependig where you live, they deliver to your door
So now i have a nice brown bear to go with my elk
There seems to be a confusing message here talking about muzzle energy/velocity. Hunting is all about terminal energy/velocity, the cartridge and bullet’s ethical capabilities, thus making maximum range limited to ensuring the elk’s vitals remains within the intended target area.
It appears that Mr. Shelby’s intent is to sell his Wapiti Express based on unethical ranges, (ranges over the time it takes an elk to move the intended impact point to the gut, such as a @1/2 second quartering movement during the bullet’s flight,) but he’s not, his better performing Wapiti Express reduces the chance that the intended impact point doesn’t get shifted into the gut.
👍👍
Lucy hunts paper with B.C. and she hunts game with nosler..
Wonder how many use their tags if
A bear gets there first?
A good question, but if they do they aren't talking, obviously.
Thanks for watching.
First thank you for all your knowledge.
2nd. I have a whole h*** of alot to learn.
I would love to hunt a grizzly. That would be such a lifetime adventure
Should be able to get within 250-300 yards that's as far I would be comfortable
Very well said , you know as you been there and did kill Elk at those ranges , if anyone would know what works you would !
