For the first 2 years of my career (2020-2022) I didn't understand how to use the tools in my camera to expose correctly, and even though everyone said "expose correctly", I didn't know HOW. I knew the screen wasn't trustworthy, and finally figured out how to use the histogram and zebras, and now waveforms and false color on my monitor. If you use zebras, set Z1 to 55 and Z2 to 85 or 90, as the clipping point for Clog3 is around 94 IRE. I always set one of my thumb buttons on my R6 as toggle zebras on and off, so that I can check during a recording.
Super helpful video, thank you! If you wanted to push the Color grade further, do you have any luts that you could recommend for the R7? There seem to be 10 trillion lut packs out there and as a relative newbie to video, not sure where to start. 🙏🏻
I usually don’t use luts, as they are usually just crushing the footage so badly and there are always things that just don’t fit my needs 😄 i usually do the color grades myself, but there really are not that many cases in which you would actually need to do huge amounts of grading. Just basic CLOG3 -> rec709 and then color correction for natural colors.
Don't know if you're still looking for this, but honestly the LUTs you can download from the camera body's support page on Canon's website are really good. Just use the right one for what Color space you're using (e.g. CLOG3 Cinema Gamut => Rec.709) or whatever is appropriate.
Timo, I understand that each person has their own way of doing things, but personally, I believe that a monitor would be very helpful, maybe not convenient for anyone looking for a running and gunning configuration.ñ but I've learned the hard way not to rely solely on the histogram, so perhaps utilizing other proper video exposure tools like waveforms or false colors would be beneficial. If you happen to use a similar configuration, I would love to hear your opinion on it. Perhaps you could do a pros and cons video about it.
Monitor is absolutely one of the most helpful tools you can buy for your filmmaking, and I use one myself constantly. But this is for the ones who are just starting out with making videos snd dipping their toes into world of LOG profiles 👍🏻 And yes, the video about my R7 filmmaking setup is on its way 👍🏻
Hi, hope you read this. I film my videos in my Canon R7 in Clog3 and when I do, no matter in what light conditions, daylight and night, the camera introduces me a terrible color noise… Do you have the same issue? Even shooting in his native ISO 800.. Maybe because the codec of clog3 in that camera that is H.265? I really don’t know. Hope you can answer, thanks! 🙏
It is made possible with an variable ND filter placed in front of the lens 👍🏻 That is what I am using on that video. When you are shooting video, the framerate and shutterspeed should always be matched with the 180’ rule (1/50 with 24fps, 1/125 with 60fps and 1/250 with 120fps) and the amount of light is controlled with aperture or an variable ND filter 👍🏻

@@doughgarcia6086 Take a look at your histogram :) if it is crushed all the way in the left, it is too dark. Those kind of situations are hard for any camera, but if you want some light in the shadows, you have to adjust more for the shadows. If you have even some data there, you can try lifting the shadows in post, but if there is no data, it doesn’t help.
I have an R5 and use the light meter all the time. No issues with it. The histogram disappearing is why I don't use it. In a run and gun situation I can't rely on exposing for one scene only. The best thing I have found to do is expose for the most harsh sunlight area then if you move around your highlights won't clip. Canon clips very easy on highlights opposed to Sony where you can recover it. Canon is better on the shadows then Sony. Just my experience with owning my R5 for over a year and owning a A7SIII for 2 years.

@@timovehkaoja Yeah it is not that much better. I wouldn't go more than 20 on raising the shadows. I have noticed that Clog1 does much better in low light then Clog3.

Question: have you ever used LUT's to do the correcting with the R7? I have the downloaded LUT from Canon and the free version of DaVinci Resolve (V16). I sometimes use LUTs but most of the time I just make my own adjustments. I used an variable ND filter from NiSi. Check it here: amzn.to/3Tw2Zm3 👍🏻 Let me know if you need any help!
@@timovehkaoja Thanks for the offer. A variable ND is one filter in all my decades of photography I've never used. At $199 that's pricey and then some. @@musicman8942 The exposure compensation doesn’t work in manual mode, as your shutter speed is determined by the frame rate (24fps -> 1/50, 60fps -> 1/125), and your base ISO is 800 for CLOG3. You can adjust the amount if light with aperture, but with bright conditions you quickly end up shooting f/8 thus losing shallow depth of field.

@@edulitix the exposure compensation is meant for modes such as AV and TV, in which camera has control of one key element: ISO, shutter speed or aperture. Camera uses those values to compensate the exposure. If you are in full manual mode, camera can’t control any of those key elements. Shooting without noise is near impossible if you want to use CLOG3. There is always some noise as the base ISO of CLOG3 is 800 and the R7 is a cropframe camera with high megapixel count.
