They don't have full authority, they are still under the legal jurisdiction of China. Also 90% of women's "oppression" under patriarchy were just terms of the marriage contract. Women could go it alone or chose to surrender some of their freedom in return for being taken care of. Men in this culture simply don't have this option, that's why they aren't "oppressed."

In Sweden there's a term called Särbo. It means two people are a couple, but decide to live on their own. Sometimes they spend a lot of time together, do vacations together and spend the night together. But at the end of the day, this is my house and that is your house. You are merely a guest in mine, a welcomed guest, but still a guest. For many elderly couples this works well, they might've lost their spouse or divorced, but found a new partner. You both have your own families, homes and lives, but you still want someone special to spend your days with. I know a couple like this, and they say they haven't fought even once. It works great for them.

    • @Dixxi91
      @Dixxi91 5 років тому +128

@@chotuitailieu8345 No, they aren't with other partners. They are maybe divorced, and the children have grown up and moved out. So the two people are living completely alone now. But for some reason they choose to continue to live alone instead of moving in together. Moving in together with your new partner might save money on rent, but they have the money to pay for two apartments and they like to have that space to be alone.
Does that make it any clearer?

"They seem like a glorified housewife, doing all the work."
First of all, it is stated that the men stay with their families and help their sisters and aunts raise their children. They don't lay around doing nothing and dating girls, they most likely help their own families and should they choose, most likely go and visit their own children "at night". Also, I have seen several comments stating that the men have built many of the buildings in that area. They don't do nothing, they just aren't the leader of the household. And it is said that they also take care of politics and such, but the grandmother and high ranking women have the final say. This interviewer is very judgemental and not very thorough and she left me with several questions. I wish there was someone else interviewing.

This interviewer I don’t know why, she just annoys me a lot. “Glorified Housewives” I feel like it was rude and insensitive, these women are the same as those not in matriarchy’s but they actually get recognition. I feel like the interviewer just took to this from a tourist view. The point was to learn about their culture, not bring Britain into it. I also feel like she painted it as they were forced to stay there and continue their culture. This was just my opinion but the interviewer really did annoy me A LOT.

I saw another german documentary about it and they too said that women are responsible for everything while men are fishing, drinking und playing games. one woman from that culture in the documentary said that they dont like the men bc they are lazy and have no real responsibilities and only enjoy themselves while women have to do everything. I think thats quite unfair and due to men not having a father role in that society. they are just fucking aroung in every house and spend the womens money. so this culture probably missed the point of matriarchy or is just crazy unequal. I mean sure we don‘t know what matriarchy really means but that culture definetly is not the best example. so it‘s not her fault but your little insight.

also younger women in that documentary said they just keep up tradition bc of their family but dont want to live like it. the women she talked to were like that too. so it seems to be a dying model for a reason, them having no chemistry with the village boys. also the walking marriage might lead to forms of incest.

It seemed to me she simply does not appreciate the value of independence in terms of industry and hard work. Also later in the video she stated that she thought their culture would die I thought that was a very awful way to end the video, just because the young people want to venture out certainly does not spell doom for the entire cultural tradition. Seems she denounced the views of the older people and just took the desires of the young people at face value, not much of a balanced nor even remotely unbiased presentation of this fascinating and inspirational culture.

But even then it's not true that this happens in all families, in some families it's the wife's brother (a man) who gives the last word inside the house. I like that lineage and inheritance is tracked through the woman. Children always know who their mother is and take her family name. I have always found it weird that we track ours through our fathers who can deny parentage as they are not the ones whose body we come from. As for hard work, well life is hard work, at least these women maintain ownership of the fruits of their labor.

That is true! My mother, who is a genealogist, is shocked by how many children were raised by non-biological fathers with no one knowing (except for the mom) in the old days. Today, with all the DNA tests, it's harder to keep secrets.
Logically, it would make a lot more sense to pass on the heritage line to someone you are certain!

I was kind of disappointed in this documentary. It seems like the host really jumped into this project with an agenda. Her comments and questions and closing thoughts really showed that she was projecting her frustration with her own western culture onto the Mosuo people rather than just reporting on their lives. Finding out whether or not they have a feminist issue (or rather a solution to her cultures feminist issue) seemed to be her goal. Which, even to me, a proponent of equal rights among genders, seemed a little unfair and unprofessional.

Very well said! Also the way that she said "have you heard of a company called Burberry" bothered me. It seemed to me like she was equating a modern British company's style to traditional garb and belittling the culture (" we have that, too!") as opposed to acknowledging that the design could be in a long list of things the British have appropriated from their territories. If promoting the history of colonialism was her goal, it wasn't explicit.

In cities you can find women and men both work hard for economic pressure but in countryside, male do take exploitive advantage of female in working, farming, breeding...So this Mosuo culture is cool to some extent because women work for themselves and inherit property from their mons to their daughters. In their culture, responsibility and authority are tied, as it should be. Their culture, roles reversed, will be men being responsible for income and meals ( which most of OUR cultures already do ), but men get to sleep with whoever they want, ask their women to leave before morning because they need to get back to work, and moms have no legal or parenting rights over their kids. In our culture, men get the responsibility but women get the authority, which, doesn't work. It's either shared, or one side gets both. There is no such thing as patriarchy. A patriarchy would be men protecting men at the expense of sacrificing women. It doesn’t work. Imagine two tribes of cavemen. One sacrifices men to prosper women, the other doing the opposite. After a few huge hit from natural disasters or resource war from other tribes, which will eventually die off? We all have the genes to protect women at all costs and treat men like shit, which, you call “patriarchy”? It has nothing to do with who is stronger or smarter. Healthy wombs are limited. Sperms are of no value as 1 can do the job of 20. Which is also why women are allowed to be selfish, or even encouraged to be egocentric, while selfish behaviors of men are frowned upon, and self sacrifice of men are seen as good act. 5% of men rise to power because they are great at securing resources against other tribes. Women taking those responsibilities, again, would be risking wombs. That was what survived.

No one is jealous, please. Being able to stay home is a luxury. The more underdeveloped and impoverished a region is, the more female labor you see. You think women breaking their backs working at tea plantations under the sun feels empowered that they are strong enough to do hard labor? And sees staying at home as being locked up as slaves? You should stop reading books on trash ideology and talk to them. Go visit non first world countries, you’ll witness a lot of “empowered” “strong” women working typically men’s jobs, and like male peers, working 12hrs a day. So, just screw up U.S.’s economy into depression and women will start “becoming strong” to do male labor.

You obviously know nothing about archeology of civilization and human evolution. Problem with women like you is you see only the top 5% of men, envy what they have and the rest of men working the mines, sewers, furnace, are just invisible to you. 98% of deaths from working hazards are of men. Must be patriarchy being sexist because dying at work is a male privilege. There is no such thing as patriarchy. A society that sacrifice the ones who carries wombs can’t populate the entire Earth. Maybe now we can, but in the past we can’t, so our genes carries that tendency to value young women over resources and value resources over lives of men. The funny thing is you want men to turn off this switch, but when they do, it’s not what you think will happen. Those men already exists, it’s MGTOW. They want nothing from women.

+sj4389gee The west is most definitely a patriarchy. Women earn 79% of the dollar that men earn for the same exact jobs. This doesn't mean they aren't working as hard, they are literally doing the exact same work, but aren't paid the same. And you act like the men of the west are forced to work in office settings against their will to support their family which is most definitely not the case.

The wage gap is calculated based off annual salaries, but you are just contradicting your own claim by proving how it is calculated. Regardless of whether or not women and men earn the same for a particular job, if you are telling me how it is calculated, you are admitting that there is in fact a gap on a national level.

And you keep on saying 'biology' like I am supposed to drop my stance just because of 'science' but 1) you are using the science to back up facts, not your opinion. So I do not disagree with the science, just your opinion. 2) Testosterone and brain function based on gender would be considered chemistry... not biology...

***** I've never said they purposefully pay women less. There are no laws that say women and men have to earn the same for the same job, but there are no laws that punish companies if they don't give equal pay. That's why there is such a large gray area. They aren't breaking the law because there is no law. And to further answer, firing women to cut costs is blatant discrimination. If you fire all women working for a certain company, somebody will need to fill those vacancies, and if woman were fired to cut costs, then the company probably won't hire women to replace the fired ones.

I agree with the weaver lady; Mosuo IS the most progressive culture in the world. Just think: no male domination, no lying, cheating, stealing, hitting, intimidating, wars; bombing. Just peace, quiet, and getting on with the daily living. Wow! I love it!!! And another thing, the children aren't being traumatized with fighting, family break-ups, or having to leave their homes, or be dragged from pillar-to-post as the single mom tries to find work, a safe living environment, babysitters, and schools while dad indulges his ego and refuses to pay child support. This is MUCH better. The kids stay with their moms, and the dads can visit. The kids get grandmother, mother, sisters, aunties, and lots to eat in a stable, safe environment. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Mosuo isn't only or last matriarchy group in China, they are the most famous one because the "walking marriage". I know there are few Miao and people from native of Hai Nan are also been somewhat matriarchy, but the point is the same, women have the power because they work more, so much more than their men, take care of the whole family, power comes from that.
My family is from a lost matriarchy family group from Si Chuan, we lost our origin and family record in last 100 years wars, but we are well integrated into modern world, still keeping some of the traditions, in our family, women are usually having the higher achievements in everything, and doing more for the family than their husbands, for my grandma's generation, nearly every female is teacher or professor, my mom's generation, every female is engineer.
So women make every big decisions in family, every child in my family, specially the female, take the mother's family name, their marriages and educations are most important things in family, but I do enjoy living in the family as a male, because it's less pressure from family.

Even if the responsibilities were equally shared between men and women in the mosou society you can still ask yourself why women takes care of the household work and men takes care of the slaugther and fishing. That seems like a stereotypical remnant of women's chores and men's chores.

budi RJ prostitues arent happy. you realise scientificially men are wired to enjoy sex right. they are more physical than emotional. women are more emotional than physical. so our emotions are first before the physical side. a womans emotional side is so strong their brain can freze and they actually will not feel anything when having sex. litterally. their whole physical side gets shut down. some women do not get jobs as easily as men. so they have to go for prostitution. I also cant believe you are judging all prostitutes that way... a majority of prostitutes are depressed. you need to look at yourself and think, where are these prostiture getting their money from? a person getting a prostitute is not better than the prostitute her self.

I feel bad for those younger girls who are likely being influenced by Chinese media, falling for the romance crap in the movies. They'll end up wage slaves with a factory job or something and feeling bored with their husbands of the future.

This is really fascinating. There is oddly something quite comforting about their way of life. It is so different to what I am used to and I cannot bring myself to judge based on my own life. They seem so happy but I see the pull of our way of life on the younger generation and sadly I feel the rest of the world encroaching on them. I cannot put my finger on it but I felt really happy for them and didn't want them to lose this way of life. There seems to be a really strong feeling of community and I can imagine loneliness would be rare in this world of theirs.

true, and they have the support of their large families and communities. The fact that the young man at the end said he would choose to return home even if he lived in mainstream society because "home is better" says it all. You don't see any of these men being arrogant aggressive f*ckboys. They look rather happy.

    • @gorgecunth1581

@@AstroMartine The only reason you see "arrogant aggressive f*ckboys" is due to it apearantly working.
These men would return home, due to easy sex and not needing to do much.
Likely men, who look worse have left the tribe long ago, since there is no possibility to prove themself to get a partner.(In the dancing scenes for excample it looks, at least like there are rather few men, which also was the initial reason why they started that way of life, according to a diffrent documentary on them)
In other documentaries, the young women seem to acctually be less fond of that lifesyle.
Also you arguably see more "arrogant aggressive f*ckboys", since we acctually became more like them.

  • @Lucinda_96

I liked this documentary up until the point where she talks about how its "lost its charm to her" because it feels like its just a "way of glorifying housewives" -- are you serious? You obviously have no depth of understanding their culture.
"I GUESS they have found some sort of gender balance" -- My god you are so white. Sorry. I'm glad you are learning. Keep reflecting on your experiences and decolonize your mind. Us tribal folks have to work hard at it too so its not just a white thing. But i guess this is a documentary for people who don't come from our background so they find it extremely strange to see other ways of life. This is why Mosou and other tribal/indigenous youth have such a hard time adapting to the "new world" if you must categorize it that way. It is just so unaccepting of our ancient traditions and cultures. There's always room for change, but lacking a sense of understanding just leads to subtle forms of degradation and loss of diversity.

What a fascinating culture! I'd be interested in seeing some studies on how the young boys in this community who have no relationship with their biological father compare to those that do. I think its a wonderful that this unusual ancient tradition has survived, but I can't see how it could hold up in a modern urban environment.
