It was truly an incredible ride by Calvin, but Mine That Bird was also an incredible horse that had great speed and true heart. Loved that they made a movie about this story!
If you think about the 20,000 to 30,000 colts born each year around the world, only 20 three year olds are elected to go the the Derby. Bird was elected based on his wins in Canada as a 2 year old. Who cares if he only won one race, it's a great honor just to be elected to the big dance and he won it. He got 2nd in the Preakness and 3rd in the Belmont, he was the only horse to win money in all three races. I lived in Roswell when he won this race. we were so, so proud.
When the gates opened, nobody could imagine two minutes later, Mine That Bird would become the second-biggest upset ($ 102,30) in Kentucky Derby history behind Donerail in 1913 ($ 184,90). If Mine That Bird was a 50-1 choice, Donerail was 91-1! Greetings from Venezuela.
I know many feel this was a “terrible racing call” but there is a thrill in the fact that he completely snuck his way up to that lead in the final stretch. The fact that he was up by several lengths before he was even noticed gave me chills. Considering how far back he was at the start made that big spread at the end just extra amazing.

I still remember this race as if it was yesterday. I remember my parents telling me that we were going to Kentucky to see the Derby and Oaks that year. The day Rachel Alexandra won the Oaks with Calvin riding her-there was talk basically everywhere I went saying "Rachel is going to demolish this field" which she did. And then, Derby day. Everywhere I went people kept saying Zayat's horse Pioneerof The Nile "is going to win this Derby easily and go on to win the Triple Crown". My parents even said so. I was thinking of Mine That Bird, how he was getting overlooked and was the underdog. I finally persuaded my parents to place their bet on Bird instead of Pioneer. They thought I was crazy. But they changed their minds when they saw him shoot up to win. I still remember the rain that day and the race and could probably recite the race word by word, even with Durkin's screw up not saying Bird's name. But that didn't matter in the end. Bird proved them all wrong. So what if never won another race after this one. He did the impossible in this race. He proved people wrong.

Good evening. In a "50 to 1" scene, a gentleman during the Pre-Derby party says "This year we have owners from England, Dubai, France, Ireland and even from New Mexico" (laughs) You know who opened that door? Venezuelans Gustavo Avila (jockey), Juan Arias (trainer) and Juan Quintero (groom) when they traveled from Caracas to Louisville in 1971 to win, against all odds, 97th. Kentucky Derby with Canonero II, a horse born in United States and bred in Venezuela. His owner Pedro Baptista (RIP) couldn´t travel due to financial problems. Their performance was very similar to Mine That Bird´s one. Greetings from Venezuela.
I remember, when I was about 10 years old, my dad Billy McLeod would ride " Red Wing " his race horse, across or over mountains to Kamloops, to enter Red Wing in the July 1st celebrations.
But also one of the greatest calls ever as it adds to the magnitude of the upset. Early on when everyone gets a call he FORGOT Mine That Bird......and trailing them all is Mr. Hot Stuff....uh, uh, uh well behind the rest is Mine That Bird. And in the stretch its PIONEER OF THE NILE, Musket Man, Papa Clem....blah, blah, blah.....and coming through on the inside is uh, uh, uh Mine That Bird. He's three freaking legnths ahead when Durkin figures this out!The worst call ever and the best call ever.
My favorite race ever, I watch it at least 3 times a year. The race caller had such disdain for Mine That Bird and he ended up with egg on his face as Calvin and the Bird humiliated the field.
What a terrible call by the announcer. The movie, "50 To 1" was great and showed the race exactly this way. Bird was a modern day Sea Biscuit. And what a great story going back to the late 1990"s showing how the impossible never is.
Yea, awesome. Classic Calvin. The race Bird ran was like a videogame with difficulty set to 'easy-mode'... We all know it is hard to fly thru those holes along the rail.
one moment in time by Dana Winner, talking horse knows the emotions of his jockey he needs a wind and the horse request granted the wish they gave that space
He wasn't expecting anything from Bird. He wasn't anything close to the favorite. And those announcers all have their favorites so when they get beaten, these guys aren't happy about it either. The guy just made an ass out of himself then tried to cover it.
You guys should also check out the show "Jockeys." Season 1, last episode. where it shows the drama leading up to this Kentucky derby race. It gives me chills still when i watch this remarkable finish by this great horse. Mine that bird, thank u for winning me $20,000. Changed my life.
Tom Durkin, one of the best race callers EVER - and easily the most entertaining - made a mistake on racing's biggest stage. He's embarrassed by it to this day, but it does NOT detract from his immensely successful body of work. Not in any way.
I guess they forgot about the races in Canada. By two years of age the horse won some pretty big races. Supposedly without the use of a shocking device if I may add.
Definitely not the worst horse to win the Derby, it was a great run. The race call however, terrible. How could miss that beautiful inside run and call it so late? Horrible call.
two of my bets for this race were 1 dollar trifecta 16/2,5,7 and 1 dollar superfecta 16/ 2,5,7 the 2 and 7 were huge odds I think. the order came 8-16-2-7. ol Calvin cost me a monster Tri
first of all VIVA NUEVO MEXICO My family has racehorses and that's out life we live in New Mexico and I have winning pictures from the race signed by Calvin I have also touched the bridle used in the derby and I personally know chip
If you watch the over head view...It seems like the 2nd place horse veered out in the other two horses and held onto 2nd place...He should have been dq,ed and placed fourth..He held on cause the other two horses had to check up when he came out into them...

SI
Hermoso
I love you all!!!
Splashtastic!
Calvin Bo Rail!!
Y todavia tiene mas fuerzas para correr 🐎👏👏🫶
Swan Song ride, enjoy the fruits of the loom shirt brand and what we sow is what we reaped enjoy your retirement Sir
one moment in time by Dana Winner, talking horse knows the emotions of his jockey he needs a wind and the horse request granted the wish they gave that space
Announcer BLOWS the call !! And he tries to hide it.
20,000 ? How much did you bet on him
+PHX Master $24 bet. I put mine that bird in my four horse trifecta box bet.. Since he was 50-1 odds & he won the race, the pay out was ridiculous

*2019 ?*
Not even close. He was second in the Preakness, and third in the Belmont. He was a champion 2 year old in Canada. This was not a fluke.
Distance and mudder horse no fluke at all.
calvin borel the king
Mine that Bird is as calm as a pleasure horse like nothing just happened. 😄
BOREL GENIUS.COME TO US IN ITALY!!!!!
Todo es posible en la vida (everything is possible in life).
If you like mine that bird watch the movie called 50 to 1 which is based on his road to the Derby
Supposedly without the use of a shocking device if I may add.
ce cheval est incroyable!!!!
Definitely not the worst horse to win the Derby, it was a great run. The race call however, terrible. How could miss that beautiful inside run and call it so late? Horrible call.
my #1most cheished video on the net.... hooves down. hands down.
two of my bets for this race were 1 dollar trifecta 16/2,5,7 and 1 dollar superfecta 16/ 2,5,7 the 2 and 7 were huge odds I think. the order came 8-16-2-7. ol Calvin cost me a monster Tri
first of all VIVA NUEVO MEXICO
My family has racehorses and that's out life we live in New Mexico and I have winning pictures from the race signed by Calvin I have also touched the bridle used in the derby and I personally know chip
just goes to say ,n any Race, anybody can Win!!!!
If you watch the over head view...It seems like the 2nd place horse veered out in the other two horses and held onto 2nd place...He should have been dq,ed and placed fourth..He held on cause the other two horses had to check up when he came out into them...
Damn what a finish
