Neal Darnell and his truck Shockwave Jet Truck racing at Toronto Motorsports Park, Cayuga, Ontario, during the weekend of the Canadian Nitro Nationals. Powered by 3 Pratt and Whitney J34-48 jet engines. These jets are usually found in U.S. Navy's T2A Buckeye plane.
Following is a reply to a question on Shockwave's FB page about the white smoke during the preliminaries. Regarding the afterburner and whether there is fire from the exhaust which creates the flame or creates a cloud of white smoke/unburned fuel. He said there is a button on the steering wheel that powers the spark igniters which creates the fire and when that button is not pushed, the fuel is not burned which creates a white cloud of smoke.
"Afterburner is either on or off. There is a button on the steering wheel to light the burner. If you don't Iight the burner, it makes smoke."
I also asked what kind of fuel it burns, ie Jet Fuel, Diesel Fuel, etc he says it can burn anything but gasoline or alcohol. Mostly oily fuels. Jet A, JP 4, JP 8, Kerosene, Diesel, BioDiesel, etc.

I asked if they could spray water into the exhaust to create a vapor cloud and he says water would not work.

I was there that day. Mr. Shockley is one amazing driver. That liquid oxygen makes for quite a show.
Shockwave pit on a better show than any jet powered car that I have seen in New Zealand.

Imagine it! Turbos are driven by exhaust volume not speed.This is why turbos are so effective on diesels. Look at the power and torque that Common Rail Diesels develop with unheard of fuel economy.

I remember this unit coming by our local drag strip probably 10+ years ago and tore a part of the surface up

Saw shockwave 25 years ago. Never gets old.
I remember the original Shockwave at the Cayuga oval in the mid 80's and if you think it's cool on a video then you should really try to see it in person. The heat, noise and the ground shaking is incredible and I was about 300 ft away.
There is nothing like being at the venue of any motorsport, no video ever does it justice. It is not just the visuals, but also the sound, the feeling and the smells.
Shockwave is back at Cayuga this year, 1-3 July.

@@MrSid54 yes, I remember the afterburner blew the car about 20 or more ft back.
I saw the Green Mamba and one other at meridian speedway in Idaho it's a quarter mile oval it was quite a sight to watch those two cars go around the oval but in doing so it kicked up all of the pebbles and put them into the crowd and it was the only time they ever had the jet cars at meridian speedway but it was pretty cool.

This is actually good for the environment, trees need exactly what that jet engine spouts out and it's called C02. Plant more trees and you'll end up with more oxygen.
Carbon Dioxide is still a greenhouse gas. Hopefully we can plant enough trees to sequester the gas, but this only works while the tree is still growing.

CO2 is invisible to the naked eye. Most of what's seen as exhaust is heated aerosolized jet fuel, forming cores for condensation of (mostly) water vapor. Anything but good for the environment, or for the audiences respiratory systems. I realise it's done for show but if any of the engines I maintain startled performing like that it would be pulled for overhaul in a flash. :-)

Is this Les Shockley's Shockwave, or a Copy Cat?? The Shockley's are from Kansas, and did Almost ALL of their Test Runs here in Bloomington, IL at the Central Illinois Regional Airport, after they added the 3rd Engine!!! They also set the World Record Here!!!

What camera do you use? The quality is great!
Nikon D7000, 70-200 f2.8 lens, Rode shotgun mic and Manfrotto tripod with video head. Camera has a DX sensor making the lens the equivalent of 105-300mm.
I too am happy with the quality, except for the wobbly nit at the end when I could not see the truck in the live view screen on the back of the camera toward the end of the track.

A large bank of batteries would be required to provide the thrust, only a matter of time I guess.
Battery power may end up quicker down the strip but would lack the fantastic spectacle Shockwave puts on before it gets to the line. Compare a video of a diesel locomotive hauled train with an electric locomotive

So the first 3 min of this video, the smoke, and the fire, is it part of the preparation to run or just for show off?
And what is the percentage of staying alife while driving this Jet Truck? looks so risky. I mean flying to the moon looks safer than this one. I loveit but it's so risky and it produce a lot of pollution, I wouldn't say cut it out but I hope such sport happens only a few times per year in a way so we don't actually hurt the evniroment.
It's all part of the show, if it just staged then took off it would be not as exciting.

180 gallons of fuel per run x $5 per gallon (if they are burning Jet Fuel) = $900 for fuel only. Turbines can also run Diesel Fuel if they are set up that way.

This truck alone contributing more than 10% of our annual CO2 Emission
Interesting that you say that. The amount of CO2 is directly proportional to the amount of fuel burnt, the commentator said it was 180 gallons. Without doubt these are US gallons not standard gallons but in the real language 681 litres. Out share of the JetA1 from AKL to YYZ via LAX would be far higher.
