  • Richard Hammond's jet car crash shook the world back in 2006, and in 2022 the car has returned from its once-wrecked state to be back in working order. With permission from Richard, Mike Fernie investigates this infamous drag racer and tentatively goes for a start-up.

    8 yrs after his accident I too had a serious accident and acquired brain injury. I'd love to let Richard know his story and recovery was and will remain to be my inspiration and I put most of my recovery down to seeing him do so well. Great video and to Richard, Thank-you.

    It's amazing how they managed to rebuild it. It's even better that little Hammond made a full recovery. But a great shame it's never going to get the chance to stretch it's legs & have a go at increasing the British land speed record. Am afraid if I got the opportunity I'd be wanting to have it do what it was built for.

    Great to see the old girl restored to running condition. The engine is out of the tiny Folland Gnat that the Red Arrows used before switching to the Hawk they still use today. Great to see a set of ex Honda Racing F1 overall's, ex Arrows and Prost F1 Driver Enrique Bernoldi by my guess

    • @gweilo8888
      @gweilo8888 2 роки тому +1

      I'm glad *someone* noticed this, I thought we were all just going to ignore it. And yes, it's definitely Bernoldi's overalls, it's easily legible on the waistband. It's not Honda Racing F1, though. The overalls are from 2005 when the team was still called BAR-Honda and Bernoldi was test driver. So they're not race-worn, but they're worn by a guy who had previously started 28 Grands Prix, and who would've used them when helping develop an F1 car, making them at least somewhat valuable as memorabilia.
      And there has to be a story here, which I'd love to hear! Does Mike own these himself and if so was he a fan of BAR, Bernoldi or both? I can't imagine that Andrew would just happen to have an ex-F1 driver's ex-F1 overalls in just the right size for a random visitor. Nor does it make any sense for the production team to have supplied an at least moderately-expensive piece of F1 memorabilia when they could've supplied something just as effective for a fraction of the cost.
      Random trivia: Bernoldi in an Arrows was the guy whom David Coulthard's much faster McLaren once famously spent 35 laps stuck behind, causing a deeply-entitled Ron Dennis and Norbert Haug to blow a collective gasket at the temerity of his not simply surrendering his fairly-earned position instantly.

She is an amazing woman. A fantastic uplifting listen.

    It’s funny people in the comments saying how it compares to a top fuel dragster etc. How they’re faster/quicker to accelerate. A jet takes time to get off the line.
    That being said the world quarter mile record was set in the UK, by a rocket car.
    But a top fuel car can’t set a speed record. They aren’t designed to drive long or far enough for a record. Plus a record has to be set over the same course in both directions and averaged. A speed record isn’t a simple top speed. Drag strips are designed to be driven in one direction.

    • @Dr.Spatula
      @Dr.Spatula 2 роки тому

      This car only went 300mph. Top fuel is 335mph. Miller went 386mph. No matter how you look at it Top fuel is still faster than Vampire even if it's geared to 1,000ft rather than the 5 mile stretch Speed Demon used to go 469mph (also v8)

    I want to point out, this is an Orpheus Engine, this thing was first used in the 50;s, the most famous fighter to use this kind of engine is the FIAT GR.1 which was used both by west Germany and Italy, this thing puts out 12,000hp with a modern British Tornado afterburner bolted on, can you imagine the RAW POOOOOOOOWAH, TO QUOTE Clarkson, that would come out of this thing is if it was using a more modern engine?
