- Driving the Shockwave Jet Truck. I took this at the Capitol Air Show in Sacramento CA 9-11-11.
Here is what it is like driving the fastest Jet Truck in the world, Shockwave.
There are 5 levers he will be using. Starting from the right.
The red handle is for directing the thrust up wards. This is done to not melt the track when the fire show is put on. Next are the throttles for the 3 jet engines. The long one with the knob is the chute and engine shut down. The one closest to the driver Kent, is for the fire show. He dumps raw diesel into the after burner. When you see him put his right hand up to the roof he is adjusting the fire that comes out of the exhaust stacks. This is one hole show. It is from the time they stopped at the end of the runway all the way through the full power run. When you see Kent adjust his gloves he is ready for the 300MPH run. Don't blink or you might miss it.
Enjoy
Thank you Kent and Bob for allowing me to put in the camera.
PS : Everyone loves your Chalupa.
I watched this for the first time a couple years ago.. just had to see it again.. Lord have mercy, what a tragedy.
RIP Chris and Shockwave...
Condolences, Thoughts and Much Love to you and your family 💜
yes I remebered I heard it went up in flames, he was not old eaither, and the truck was a ledgend, saw the shockwave 2 at the dayton airshow and on tv many times.sad days, did they ever figure out what really went wrong and caused the wreck yet
@@manga12 steer tire failure i heard
@@jonnie2bad ohhh ouch yea that will do it at that speed, wonder if they are even going to be able to put the thing back togather like they did the green mamba to put in a museum at least, it was a famous racetruck.
Correction: Front steer tire blew causing loss of control.
RIP Shockwave? It's kinda tasteless to mourn an inanimate object alongside the actual man who lost his life.
Rest in peace, Chris Darnell. You were one hell of a performer.
The video was nicely done. I would’ve expected the camera to move a little more, because the only way I knew it was over was when he popped the chute and killed the engine.
But chris is a photographer right🤔
Rest in peace my Hero! My dads name is chris like mine and hes a truck driver. I always thought of him as Chris Darnell driving the jet truck after my dad took me to the air shows many times as a young boy. I fell in love with the truck. Always told my dad your my shockwave truck driver! I made little labels for all my toy trucks as a kid that said shockwave. My dream is to drive a jet truck with my dad. Its my dream ): thank you chris darnell for being my favorite truck ever. You have no idea how much i loved this truck as a kid
Seeing how amazing jaw dropping this truck performs if seen from outside, we never knew what goes on the inside. Thanks for this video. This guy for sure was too busy but puts on a great show and does a great job driving this truck. bravo
Just loves the energy he put in when pulling that fire lever!
10:45 😀
@@oliversundstrom1806 He was probably looking at someone and was like "BITCH IM IN A ROCKET TRUCK FIRE FIIREE FIIIIREEEE"
Uhh that's the sheer force of the engines lunging him forward. If you look at an outside video you see the whole truck move forward 2-3 feet everytime he hits the flames.
uuh that's not what makes him forcefully pull that lever... First off the lunging doesn't happen BEFORE he pulls it, does it?!
It was like the first time everytime Chris made a pass although he had been doing it for so many years.
God Speed my friend
Wow! What a heck of a ride. I have had the honor off seeing Shockwave run in person a couple of times in my life. Thank you for sharing this awesome video of what it takes to make it all happen. Never get tired of watching this.
Very much respect and thank you my uncle bought a Jet dragster from him and the way it was design it saved his life my uncle was Ron Hoover shaking n bake
RIP Chris..Thanks for the great memories
350+ mph. One hand on steering wheel. Like a boss
As a drag racer we are always taught to drive with one hand. Less jerky movements if the vehicle gets out of shape. Better chance of keeping control.
@@dragracer266 - This stunt driver recently crashed during a performance and lost his life...
@@opo3628 incorrect. Chris Darnell passed away. This is NOT Chris Darnell
This is Kent Shockley. The original owner of the truck. This was the second truck. The one before it crashed.
Probably why he lost controls when the thing exploded a few days ago n died
13:20 is about when the run itself starts
Romulus Conagher people like you give me hope thanks
Thanks so much
Thank you so so much Claudia single father here I was nervous to try this but I trust you so I did wow it came out perfect you have helped me reach one of my dreams I wanted to give my children something I never had and that is good cuisine and variety words cannot describe how I feel we did it together much love keep up the good work again thank you ❤
Brings a tear to my eye,,good friend Chris died in the same truck doing what he loved!!..God Speed Chris...
I've seen this truck several times and always enjoyed the show. My condolences to all the people who are affected by this tragedy 🙏
DUAL Roll Cages and fire suppression system. Still wasn't enough to save him when he crashed on July 4th. RIP Chris; you were the Greatest Showman.
Got to see this man and machine a few times at the Cleveland air show. Still one of the most impressive exhibitions on earth. Strapping yourself to 36,000 hp and see what happens when you flog it wide open!!! No sanity lol!
He will be seriously missed 🙏
Should have made a split screen cockpit view a exterior view
@l FacelessBuckle l- Why not ? 🧐
Exactly
@@haraldpettersen3649 its 400 mph winds the opposite direction on top of the gs of blasting off
How about just add the music so the driver doesn't look like a teenage rock band wannabe.
Seen him before at the World Series of Drag Racing in Cordova Illinois many years ago. Great Show he puts on.
Lucky bastard, to have that kind of job! I fly jets for a living but this, this looks like WAY more fun!!
Great job. Thanks for providing the video and description. Saw the truck in San Antonio this year.
He recently crashed and died...
@@opo3628 I heard the news. So sad.
I have seen this truck many times in USA. Very cool to see he is as animated as his fans. Awesome vid.
Can never get tired of watching this truck....a mean plane man wateva it is...its awesome
I loled when he jerks the handle around and starts head whipping 😂😂😂😂
😂
RIP. Died going godspeed. what a chad chris was 🕊
There is a lot going on for just a few seconds of runtime. . . Well done. . .
I know its a great show. Never knew just how much work was going on on the inside.
Must've been an awesome experience piloting this crazy machine.
That lever that he is spazzing out on has to the one that unleashes the smoke before take off. Just judging by the past shows I've seen with him and his motions
It's been years ago, but I've seen Kent a couple of times in North Carolina with my girl friend. It's been many years later and I would like to share that amazing experience with my wife and three children. This video was fascinating to watch, I've never knew how Kent operated such a beast or anything about the set up inside the cab. Thank you for making this video of this unique perspective and thank Les & Kent Shockley for doing what they do!! God Bless The USA!!
I don't get it why 181 trolls don't like this from all their negative comments. This is an exhibition machine only, not a top fuel dragster. Showmanship at its finest. Enjoy!!
The large red lever controls a flap on the rear of the truck. When it's pulled back it directs the jet blast and fire slightly up away from the track. When pushed it's to put more down force on the nose of the truck. The small red lever close to him that he pulls on through out the show is for dumping diesel into the after burner and into a ring of spray nozzles to make even more fire. This is the only video of what Kent does in the truck during a hole show. I was lucky to get the video
He was like the Wizard of Oz behind the curtain pulling all those knobs and levers triggering flames, smoke and noise to dazzle an audience. RIP
This is the dad on this video, thought it was his son that was killed.
This is Kent Shockley. The truck was sold to a different race team. I don’t know who the driver that died or his relationship to Kent.
@@CrazyMarty Chris Darnell. He died on Saturday, July 2 at a Michigan air show. He was racing a couple of planes. From the footage, it looks like the Shockwave Jet Truck owned by Darnell Racing Enterprise show team suffered a mechanical failure; possibly a blown tire which caused the truck to tumble and roll. RIP Chris Darnell. Vids like yours, even though old, are popping up because of the algorithm.
Rest in peace chris. You were a rlly goodman. Prayers to the family.
This sucks I grew up watching this guy and went to his shows, he inspired me to build my own homemade jet engine with a working afterburner...... rest in peace my friend😔
for someone who has seen shockwave inn person multiple times this video was awesome..thx for sharing..loved the victory dance at the end haha
God bless this freakn guy.
That was really cool!!! I saw my first Jet Truck in Vidalia, GA a long time ago and it was fun to see. I always wanted to know how it operates inside and this video was a perfect demonstration. Thank you!!
RIP Sir. You were loved by many.
Great to see what goes on inside the truck love it when he come to lebonon valley.
I miss this guys I miss working on that truck and I miss those shows
I wish starting and driving my car was like this...
Turning a key can be boring, I think 5 people and 45 minutes would be far more interesting, such as when exiting the car park from getting my bread and milk.
Stopping for fuel would be a whole day.
Better get up a hour earlier so you won't be late for work.
That would get old fast
Hey great explanation of the controls, that was a huge help for understanding what was going on! That gets to have wayyy too much fun driving (or piloting) that beast... lucky, lucky bastard!
That's a man who enjoys his work.
He didn't even leave the couch. Wow, that was smooth.
11:52 He is straight up spitting fire for the crowd with the first red handle, He is straight rocking it too. Putting on a show, that was what he loved! Note: The fire happens on the downward full pull, not the up. Look at his body movements, loving it!
Up is go. The afterburner are actuated on the up stroke. His handles are designed so when he pulls the large black one at the end of the run, it cuts the fuel to the engines, the afterburner and deploys the chutes in one motion.
holy crap, I would get claustrophobic just with that helmet
xxcv
85???
Tf
During the show as he runs up and down the track he is actually checking how much the cross wind will push the truck across the run way. So when he does his 3776 MPH run the truck will actually go from one side of the track to the other. The 2 extra chest bets he uses were installed after the truck had a blow out and he crashed the truck.
Crazy to think this exact situation happened again , rip
The first three minutes looked like he driving around a grocery store parking lot looking for an open stall
Enjoyed the video, cool to see what actually goes on in the truck while he's putting on a show, I'm from Akron Ohio where the jet powered vehicles where born, thanks to Walt and Art Arfons.
Rip chris 🙏🙏💔💔💔🙏🙏🙏💔💔
Wow , talk about loving what you do for a living!
This was the one thing Cleetus McFarland was afraid of and pulled the plug on Mullets jet engine project.
Rest in peace 🕊️
I am beyond impressed..that truck is awesome!
The wait of 13 mins to see this dude one hand on the wheel at 376mph ended in 5 secs but still pretty cool
Yes a split screen outside a d inside view would have been epic
Cool. .. All the time I was thinking just toggle switches that was controlling the afterburner, fuel and jets with a brake pedal. . Lol
The badd-assery in the sequence starting at 13:28 is off the charts.
How to drive the Shockwave:
1. Push all three throttles to full power.
2. Check RPM's and temps.
3. Thumbs up.
4. Open afterburner fuel valve.
5. Visor down cuz $hit$ about to get real.
6. Release Brakes.
7. Ignite afterburner fuel with thumb switch on wheel.
8. Ride that dragon all the way down the strip with one hand on the wheel like a BOSS.
Does this man has the greatest job in the world or what??
This never gets old.
Was there 2 different drivers of Shockwave ? This excellent vid mentions "Kent" but in the comments there are several RIP "Chris" ?
The truck has had several different owners over the years. The guy that died was not the guy in this video. It was the new owners.
I go to the airshow every year up here in RI JUST to see shockwave!! Get up right on the fence on the flight line and ya feel the heat whenever he pumps the AB's....lol LOVE IT!
Rip Chris God speed
This guys more busy then the Wizard Of Oz behind the curtain 😆
RIP, Chris. What a ride.
These new Prius's are really nice...........Impressive indeed!
i miss having fun with those guys had more fun rebuilding the truck
Now THAT....is what you call strapped in!!
Love that happy dance looks like he's 21 behind the wheel
you can tell he loves doing that...after seeing him at the miramar airshow a couple months ago, i know exactly what hes doing in there...very cool video
Thank you for safety first. 2 hours prep...yeah, really try 6-8 hrs. just to make sure this man goes home in one piece, even if he's crazy-as-a-loon. Man, I miss being young!!
14:03 when you’re living your best life 👍🏽
He recently crashed during a performance and died...
The flames 🔥 the jet truck drag race
End of the run...who cares about N1, lol he hammered the throttles to the stops right before shutdown. Beautiful.
GREAT Vid FRP!!! I live in Bloomington, IL and the Shockley's did a lot of their Test Runs here at the Central Illinois Regional Airport!! We were Always glad to see the Shockley's pull into town!!! When they were getting ready for the World Record, Les said Let's Take it to Bloomington, cause it has the Smoothest Runway at just the right Elevation, and the Right Wind Conditions!!! They ran BOTH Shockwave and Super Shockwave here MANY Times!!!
God speed Chris. Rip.
jokes on you, he just has a throttle pedal. The levels are just for him to play with to pass the time before the run.
actually there's only the brake pedal in the truck. the levers in the truck are for throttles to the engines, the red one directs the thrust off the runway, and the one he plays with is for the afterburners, the one with the black ball on it deploys the parachutes and shuts the engines down.
drev1 why is he stupid? He’s right
It’s a freaking joke lol
You guys don’t understand sarcasm do you?
It doesn't always translate. In these comment streams we lose voice inflection and body language, ya know, sometimes a smile makes it ok. ☺ see?
Curtis Petit he is way down for some burner pops!🤣
After he checks his gloves he make a run at 376 MPH. With one hand on the wheel.
Thanks you so much for showing us this.. im just.. i have no words!
At 9:38 what was all that rapid shifting for lol
My favorite truck fast jets any I like that one of four jet engine
I think another view would come in handy, this just looks like a senior inmate who's escaped and now driving a truck with 1000 cats giving birth.
Shockwave is bitching!!! Cheers for the clip ;) and hi from New Zealand
Wow thats way cool man! Must have been one hell of a ride!
What a hell of a job!
Bobs seems super concerned about the driver, From the looks on his face to the way he talked to the driver you could tell bob doesnt think this is all very safe lol.
You can tell he Loved It!!!!!!
I looove listening to a jet engine start up. Sounds so wicked
Hooolllyyy!!! Emotions better than in the movie Interstellar
What is he doing when he is jerking the handle around I assumed it was the afterburner but I don't know For sure
Yep. You can always see the reflections of the flames in the center of the truck whenever he flings the tiny lever as he drives around to show off for the spectators at any airshow. Poof poof poof poof poof.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The things America does to entertain. Gotta love it
Ive seen your truck at Texas State Techcical College Waco 1miler air strip.. Bad ass show
LOVE THE VIDEO I SEEN SHOCK WAVE AT KIL-KARE IN DAYTON OHIO WISH THEY WOULD DO MORE INSIDE VIDEOS LOL NICE JOB
I got you we used to come see y'all in MO can and Missouri border drag strip back in the 80s finally got to see you throttle all three Jets to help turn cool
*Mo-Kan
Like a little kid in there haha! Love It!
This is Kent driving not Chris
I saw Shockwave at the 2013 EAA airshow and I am a KID
amazing how much set up goes into a 30 second run, and just how fast the run is over
