A bit RPG heavy and those are great games. But I would like to mention CAPCOM's MegaMan X series. These games, especially X1 and X2 (which featured the SUPER FX) are like incredible sci fi Action movies. Non stop explosions, robots, guns and lasers permeating superior level design are just amazing along with the stellar plot involving Zero.
Its still one of my Favs to this day. The Story twists blew my mind as a Kid and showed me that Games could tell an amazing tale. The music was also the best and still is my Fav FF Score by far.
It's hard to put into words the feeling of how good Final Fantasy VI was at the time. The story was mesmerizing, and the graphics were second to none. The music sealed the deal. You simply had no idea what was coming next, and you WANTED to know, and that's what kept you playing. 100% agreed; you can tell there was a tremendous amount of passion and heart put into developing the game.
Totally agree with your thoughts on ffVI being the best game of all time, the music and characters are top-notch. Crazy how they made me feel connected with little pixel art sprites, something even modern games have a hard time accomplishing. With the survey about HD 2D games that square enix put out, I hope people will vote for it to be at the top of the list. Would love to see that game in octopath style.
Fantastic list, most I have on my top 10 as well. SimCity is also a personal favorite that I still love. The OST is in my car on a snes plaaylist and it still invokes nostalgia of hours spent making crazy cities. Such a wonderful system, its really hard to narrow it down to 10.
Here is mine. 1. Super Mario World 2. Megaman X 3. Legend of Zelda : A Link to the Past 4. Final Fantasy 6 5. Chrono Trigger 6. Final Fantasy 4 7. Donkey Kong Country 2 8. TMNT : Turtles In Time 9. Kirby Super Star 10. Super Punchout / Street Fighter 2 / Mortal Kombat 2 / Super Metroid / Castlevania 4 / Super Gouls n Ghosts / Super Adventure Island / Ogre Battle / Final Fantasy V / Tactics Ogre / Sim City / Joe n Mac / Breath of Fire 2 / Dragon Quest #'s / EarthBound / Super Mario Kart / Super Mario All Stars / Starfox / Donkey Kong Country 1&3 Super Nintendo easily has the greatest library of all time.
My brother sent me the link to this video. We are now in our 40s and grew up with the NES and SNES. This list is fantastic except for one thing, you keep mentioning that the games were the best for their era or up until that point and that's true but I feel that almost every game you mentioned here are not only all that, but they are truly some of the greatest games of all time. Cheers buddy.
Hey Kevin, thanks for chiming in! Great point, this was a golden age of gaming, at least for our generation, so I can definitely understand your point of view!
I Came in the End! But when you talks about Final Fantasy VI!! Fiiuuu. It pulls the heartstrings!! What a classic!! For some years it was my driving force of inspiration!! It took me about 2 years to get a Japanese version here in Brazil! Until then. So much adventure trying to find this masterpiece. I was so thrilled by it, that all of the rest of the RPGS felt like nothing to me!! Of course they were classics!! But no one of them could be of any mach, to what I've experienced in FFVI !! I did not settle down until I found the game!! Them I beat it in Japanese and then in English!! It is a life changing experience!! Thanks God to help me find this game and so much more!!
@@Xygor Exactly!! Locke saving Terra. Edgar's moving castle!! And so on!! It is such a rollercoaster!! A true adventure!! And the music! My GOD the music!! The best in any game!! It fits perfectly with the atmosphere!! The game is a blueprint of how to make an engaging RPG! And I am almost certain that the best games to come after it. Took inspiration at least for the rhythm of the narrative!! Always putting you in so much different situations!! Phantom Train!! I better stop! I'd like to recomend you listen to HardcoreGaming101 podcast about FFVI!! The host of the show regards it as his fave game alongside Metroid! So he defends it with so much passion that it is like watching an football final!! Kkkkk
Making a top 10 list for the SNES is a brave move considering how many really amazing games there are for the system. Your list was perfectly acceptable as they are most of my favorites. I am not as big of a fan of Metroid as everyone else even though I concede that it is really good.
Believe it or not, it has been the _Link to the Past /Super Metroid_ randomized-item crossover videos here on UA-cam that have started getting me to see how good the Metroid games can be. Thanks to MetalSmasherGaming...!!
Glad I've recently found this channel as a kid growing up in the late 80s and 90s in the UK. SNES was probably my favourite console to. This channel just fills me with nostalgia, so thank you for your content dude. Love it.
Pretty good list. Here are some of my favorite SNES titles: -Mario Kart -Turtles in Time -Zelda -Star Fox -Donkey Kong -Mario World -Mortal Kombat -Yoshi's Island -Illusion of Gaia I only played sim city on the PC never the snes version. That game was fantastic. After you save your giant city you would load it and spawn disasters and watch everyone die. Pretty great.
Every single game you have on your list I have played through and absolutely loved. I can't even pick a number 1 from this list. They are all number 1 in my mind.
I have so much awe towards this community that shares the same love for these timeless classics, sincerely, it's endearing as these childhood times were truly the golden years. Only those who lived it can know and express what is written in these comments, true gold, much
I was so conflicted when we were getting into top 3, not knowing how SMW or DKC would figure into the list -- but I fully endorse this top 10, you got it spot-on. Still never played any Castlevania games, but besides that, sequencing and everything is right on for me too.
Yea, i agree with your assessment in regard to FF6, The story is excellent, the music is unique and the game mechanics is at the top of what a Snes rpg can offer. One of the best RPGs ever made.
FF6 literally: let's just throw in every single type of game mechanic there is that we can think of... which is good and bad, lol (great/bad, lol, especially if a power gamer, as its very complex and confusing on what's best/optimal/etc, and lots of different choices/characters/etc to do as well too) but ya, FF6 is TOP TIER, but for me, it is beaten out by Lufia 2, the PERFECT rpg (and not just for the snes, it's the best rpg of all time, only tied with TES: Morrowind, for the computer, laughs) ------------------ my top 5 best snes RPGs of all time: 1. Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals 2. Final Fantasy 6 3. Breath of Fire 2 4. Chrono Trigger 5. Ogrebattle: March of the Black Queen none of the other snes RPGs compare to these 5 snes RPGs, they're just in lower tiers than these top 5 snes rpg
Pretty decent list. Here's my 10 (not like anyone asked): Battle Cars Bulls vs Blazers and the NBA Playoffs Krusty's Super Fun House MechWarrior Monopoly Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures SimEarth: The Living Planet Ultima: The Black Gate Young Merlin
I would have moved a few around and swapped out some in the list with some from your honorable mentions but honestly I cannot criticize any of your choices other than adding Illusion of Gaia. Bravo. Absolutely Bravo.
I remember playing so many games on the SNES and a lot of them are still better than most games out today. It is a massive achievement of the 90s that we were blessed so much with the SNES. EDIT - One could argue that you could easily rank the Top 50 SNES games and there would be favorites for everyone.
Awesome list! Really enjoyed this video format. I think this might be the first top ten list for the SNES that has not included Mega Man X. So many great games on this system. Many many hours. Thank you for the nostalgia trip!
Agree with the top 2! Especially with number 1 being my favorite on not only the SNES, but all time! 👍 Also agree on the soundtrack! I love that you had a lot of Squaresoft titles on there. The golden era of RPG’s IMO
Wow. Your top five are my top five. Just an incredible line up. It was a good time to be a kid in those days, watching the progression and passion of these stories evolve. I still come back and play these every few years. It's like visiting old friends.
@@Xygor My thoughts exactly. Final Fantasy VI in particular has inspired and shaped many of my own creative endeavors ever since those early years. Your channel is great, Good Sir. Keep it up!
I totally agree with your list as far as all the games you mentioned. SNES was my favorite system as I was born in 1985. The only ones I would disagree with is that I would probably switch castlevania with Super Mario World. Otherwise your list is perfect. I love all the games you mentioned including the honorable mentions.
I haven't thought too much about it, but I think most of your top ten would also be in mine. One game you did not mention that I loved was Space Megaforce. I know the SNES wasn't as renowned for its shmups as say, the TurboGrafx -16, but Space Megaforce stood above even Gradius III and Super R-Type
"And on that day the world was changed forever." Playing Final Fantasy 3 (6) for the first time when it came out has never left me. It's tied with Lunar: The Silver Star for Sega CD as the RPG I've replayed the most in my life.
It's tough to not have Super Mario World near the top of the list, it is still my favorite Mario game, the graphics and gameplay still hold up incredibly well today. It's one of my go to retro games that is in constant rotation on my switch and SNES.
This list is pretty much my top 10 SNES list as well! The only things I would change would be ranking Secret of Mana much higher, (top 3 for me!) replace Ogre Battle with Mario Kart and Super Castlevania IV with Earthbound. I too poured a TON of hours into Sim City back in the early days of the SNES, it was the 3rd game I ever owned after SMW and FF2 right after the SNES launched.
Right on, glad you liked the list! Sounds like we were the same when it came to Sim City, I can't tell you how much time me and my friends poured into it!
Secret of Mana, Illusion of Gaia, Link to the Past, and Final Fantasy 2 and 3 will always be some of my all time favorite games. FF7 and the Resident Evil games on the PS 1 (especially RE 1) would also be on that list. But yeah, the Super Nintendo seemed to be the golden age of adventure RPG games.
Excellent list. All of those games deserve to be in there. For me in no particular order: Super Mario World Castlevania IV Secret of Mana Final Fantasy IV Final Fantasy VI (probably my favorite too) Chrono Trigger Super Metroid A Link to the Past Donkey Kong Country II Terranigma
FF4, FF6, Chrono Trigger, Secret Of Mana, Super Mario RPG, A Link To The Past, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country Trilogy etc….Are straight goated! 🐐 Aww to be a kid again 🤤
I totally agree with your choice. This video makes me to play the game again. I only miss Megaman X from your choice. Thanks for the video of retro gaming. Long live Retro Gaming Community
Illusion of Gaia is one I remember buying the day it came out and getting a crappy shirt that I loved, and then pouring hours into it and loving every minute of it.
That list was RPG heavy. No problem with that!! The Super Nintendo made some of the best role playing games, some of which are still regarded as best of all time after thirty years. I like that ActRaiser was put in the honorable mentions as Quintet games are pretty much my personal favorites. I don't think I ever would have given the RPG genre a chance had it not been for Soul Blazer and Gaia
yes, i never had such emotional ties to a game since ff3. i can remember searching the world for ways to bring back general leo and rachel, locke's girlfriend, and seeing if there was one more dream that shadow would have. then someone mentioned chrono trigger and when i played that one, i could not believe it was older than ff3, it was also very fun to play, especially when you can play through with all your previous stats and items. and all the different endings
FF6 just has that epic (and very dark) scale and great gameplay too (especially if like power gaming, lots of choices, as that's literally what they did with FF6: let's just throw in nearly every single type of mechanic into the game, laughs, which is both good and bad, lol), that can't be beaten by any other RPG, though BoF 2 comes close to it however, Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals, beats out FF6 for me, as it's just the best RPG of all time, as it's the only RPG that really has some really deep life lessons, including with love and etc, that you can only truly appreciate when older, it's really emotional, and got great life/love lessons, which is what puts it over FF6 for me, along with its amazing game play and features too, it's just truly the perfect RPG, and that's the only reason it beats out FF6 and BoF2, laughs Chrono Trigger is very good, but it's got some issues for me, which is why it gets beaten by FF6, BoF2, and Lufia2 --------- my top 5 best snes RPGs of all time: 1. Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals 2. Final Fantasy 6 3. Breath of Fire 2 4. Chrono Trigger 5. Ogrebattle: March of the Black Queen none of the other snes RPGs compare to these 5 snes RPGs, they're just in lower tiers than these top 5 snes rpgs
One thing: Chrono trigger came out after FF3 (6) on the SNES. I remember finishing FF6 and eagerly checking each month for when CT would be released. I had to import them both into the UK as they were never released there. I loved Secret of Mana and it got me interested in Square Soft games. That game hasn’t held up well, but at the time was ground breaking. Importing FF 3 (6) meant I had to deal with numerous bugs and saves getting corrupted/deleted using the fire adapter, including the ending going blank when Gogo’s eyes came on the screen. It was like having an engrossing 60 hour book having the last few pages ripped out. Super Play magazine actually printed out the whole ending for people to see. I still bought an American SNES a few years later to see the whole 20 minute ending. It was worth it. I agree that FFVI is better then Chrono Trigger, and my all time favourite RPG. At the time the magazine scores reflected that, and CT whilst scoring highly, was criticised for having a lighter story and characters in comparison to FF3. But over time, many actually prefer Chrono Trigger to FF 3 (6). I think that’s largely due to it being re-released on PlayStation 2 and the FF6 release having horrible load times. As well as random battles not being as accessible as CT’s battles where you can see the enemies.
I get why you narrowed it down to NA released games only but for me Tengai Makyou Zero is my favorite hands down. Getting my copy in japan and making way my through it was one of my most fun studying/gaming experiences. A lot of the cultural references would have made it a pain to localize in a timely manner but damn wish this game had a western release so more people could enjoy it. The best sprite work on the system imo
Snes had such a mind blowing amount of 10/10 games. Hard to make a list even with a top 25 and if you included games not released in North America a top 50!
No.10 0:56 secret of mana No.9 2:12 super castlevania 4 No.8 3:35 sim city No.7 5:09 ogrebattle No.6 6:17 super Mario rpg No.5 7:41 final fantasy 4/2 No.4 9:18 super Metroid No.3 11:12 the legend of Zelda link to the past No.2 12:37 chrono trigger No.1 13:58 final fantasy 6/3
Your list is great, hard to disagree with anything on the list, but my top 10 personally also includes Megaman X, Donkey Kong Country 2, and Yoshis Island, but not sure which of the ones on your list would need to be pushed off to make room for them. The best thing about the SNES is it had so many incredible games, and they almost all hold up strong some 30 years later
Thank you for not adding Super Mario World on here. So many people seem to stick it in their lists by default or out of some sense of obligation. Not to take anything away from it. Also, nice dig at Soul Blazer during your Secret of Mana talk as you called Mana "the best action RPG". Made me chuckle. Poor Soul Blazer.
I think that the SNES Mini started out with the games "Super Mario World", "The Legend Of Zelda - A Link To The Past" and "Super Metroid"; that feels like a very solid list of launch titles to me.
Great list. the SIM addition was out of no where.. I didnt even know it was on the SNES lol. But for me Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger and Terranigma are my TOP3, with Zelda, Lufia 2, Mario RPG, Megaman X, the 3 DKCs rounding up the TOP10. But honestly surprised at the lack of Lufia 2, Megaman X and any of the DKCs @_@...
After playing video games for over 20 years including modern gaming, Super Mario World is still the most important game of my life. It introduced me to art and game design which my favorite part of gaming.
Sweet top 10 list. With so many excellent games on the SNES, it's fun to look at the top lists from different people. I would put Mega Man X2 and Mega Man 7 on my list.
The emotions when hearing Secret of Mana's music, ohhh... Zelda 3 is the best. When I look for a traditional rpg (turn based usually) I want them to have all those secrets/exploration discoveries etc...Some of the first pokemon games had them a bit. Chrono Trigger is a mastepiece. I love it's music even more than Secret of Mana (Frog's theme, Magus battle theme...) and the multiple endings (since you mentioned the new game+ : "impossible" fights that became possible). Breath of Fire 1 and especially 2 are my favorite rpgs after Chrono Trigger. The maze-like exploration was a bit too much to my taste but I prefered the characters "archetypes" compared to Final Fantasy where 'everyone can do and equip everything'. Super Mario World is like Zelda 3 : the best. Awesome to play in coop : Zombies ate my Neighbors, Mario Kart (birth of a legend). Special mention to Lufia 2 and it's 'roguelike tower mode' :P
Pretty good list. Somewhat predictable, and standard. But fine indeed. I appreciate that you were concise and somewhat detailed with the games. Glad to see EarthBound didn't get more attention than it deserves. And I'm glad to see Mario RPG on it. For me, That's not a top 10 SNES game. That's a top 10 game straight up. I think I probably would have knocked off a couple like SimCity and Metroid, and put on super Mario world and super Mario kart. I know it's kind of a cheat to put that many games from the same franchise, but I can't deny how much fun they were. Would you ever consider a hidden gems or underrated games video in this format?
Thanks! Earthbound is great I just didn't think it was quite as great as the other 10! I can understand others not having stuff like Sim City in here, that's a personal pick! I do have a 10 SNES Hidden Gems video, it's linked at the end of this video!
Dang im really a SNES kid, played almost all of those on SNES, and a few on emulator around the GameCube era. Only one I never played was Secret of Mana. SM RPG was my first RPG and things like equipping characters made me fall in love with rpgs.
It's impossible to make a top 10 SNES list with all the literal gold of gaming it had. Though some note worthy games that you didn't bring up would be Mega Man X, Demon's Crest, F-Zero, X-Men Mutant Apocalypse, and The Adventures of Batman & Robin. Almost everything Square, Capcom, and Konami did for the SNES was godly though. What an era, I wish gaming today had this level of quality and heart put into it.
Great video thanks. So hard to only do 10 for the SNES. I could do 50 easily. My favourite console of all time. I enjoyed games before it but it made me a gamer for life.
Glad to see Ogre Battle and Sim City on the list! Its impossible to only pick 10 games since the SNES has dozens of classics, but I would say DKC2 and Yoshis Island deserve honorable mentions.
Super Castlevania is a great game indeed but I actually think I like Bloodlines more! I kind of wish the devs or some fans of the series would make a hack or new game implementing both aspects of the 2 games!
Great video, man. I agree with your top 5, but I would take out Secret of Mana, Sim City and Ogre Battle. Although good games, they are beaten by Megaman X, Donkey Kong and Super Mario World, at least in my book. But it's cool to see diversity!
I'd have a hard time picking between Chrono Trigger and FF3. I definitely poured more hours into Chrono Trigger, but FF3 was just so well done. The music is just fantastic. Too many good RPGs on the system 👍
My BF has the SNES while I had the GEN. No matter the game he'd show me I knew a port to my console would be possible with some tweeks.. But not Secret of Mana. That game broke my heart. The music, scaling sprites, use of colour, transparencies could never be replicated on my console of choice. To this day that little game has a place in top 10 games of all time.
Secret of Mana is good the first time, learning/playing-through its story/plot, but after that, it's really not a very good game (action-rpg)... Secret of Evermore really is completely better as a game/rpg than SoM, but it can't compete with SoM's epic story/plot for the first time, as SoE just doesn't much much of a story/plot, but its game play and etc is so good, making it the better game
Great list. I definitely agree that every pick you made deserves to be in the conversation for best SNES games of all time and a few on the best games of all time regardless of system. FF6 was nothing short of revolutionary for me as a kid when I first played it. So a game that i personally have a lot of nostalgic feelings for but would likely never make it onto most top 10 lists would be Sunset Riders. (sadly never released in Japan so I cant find a super famicom version to play while i live here in Tokyo!) I had a lot of fun playing this with my brother or friends over and over again.
My top 10 1) Chrono Trigger 2) Zelda a Link to the past 3) Super Metroid 4) Final Fantasy III 5) Super Mario RPG 6) Turtles in Time IV 7) Super Castlevania IV 8) Donkey Kong Country 9) Super Mario All Stars 10) Super Mario World Honor mentions to: F-Zero Contra III The Alien Wars Secret of Mana UN Squadron Super Punch Out Seiken Densetsu 3 Star Ocean Act Reiser Yoshie's Island Donkey Kong Country 2
My own top 5, very biased and includes JP releases: 1. Fire Emblem Geneology of Holy War 2. Tactics Ogre 3. Front Mission: Gun Hazard 4. Lufia 2 5. Final Fantasy 6 Picking 10 is tough for me. I have certain taste for games that portray a war in somewhat serious manner, have unique art style, appealing plot/world setting, memorable characters, fun/fair/balanced gameplay, and mostly importantly, I still feel the urge to replay them once in a while. I have many criteria so I can only pick 5 lol
Can't argue with much of the list. My top 2 would be the same as well. I still remember buying those games new as a kid. A friend and I played FF3 until the floating continent in our first play session (24 hours!). I always bounce off Mario RPG though. Not sure what it is about that game but I can never get into it.
It's a good list and we have a lot of overlap (and your list reinforces that I need to try FF 2/4). For me I go #1 Zelda a Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Super Ghouls N Ghosts, Star Fox, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Contra 3, Donkey Kong Country, Wild Guns and Super Castlevania IV to finish the top 10 with Super Mario World, ActRaiser and TMNT Turtles in Time as honorable mentions that I still almost feel need to be squeezed in.
for the "hack and slash" side scrollers, my fav is: knights of the round (snes) // this like many, were also (originally) arcade games too, back when you'd go to pizza places (or where-ever) with them, sighs... miss those days... and rushing straight from school to the video game rental stores, lol it's a really good and fun game (there's quite a few other such type of games, but a lot of them are too hard, and it'll take some time/work to look them all up, but it's something I should do, get a list of all of these types of games, as there's quite a lot of these action/"hack-n-slash"/magic-etc side scroller games)
@@redmoonbloodmoon3161 It's a good game. I tend to classify Knights of the Round and similarly King of Dragons as beat em ups and something like Magic Sword as the hack and slash but they all have that similar game style and arcade background with really good ports on the SNES.
Very good list. I would've had to have added DKC and Mega Man X in there myself but can't fault any of the other inclusions. Totally is hard to narrow it down to just ten selections.
I just finally finished Lufia 2 and I really am trying to figure out what RPG to play next…but watching. This makes me want to play through FF6 again…what a game.
My top 10 in no particular order: Chrono Trigger (still the one and only to this day that I'm aware of, a time traveling JRPG, from the paleolithic to post apocalypse and practically everything in between, nothing before or since was this wide in scope, not to mention its diverse and lovable cast of quirky characters (a talking frog, robot and a cavewoman??? How's that for diversity!), rich, epic soundtrack and dynamic combat system that revolutionized the JRPG genre). Final Fantasy 6 (introduced me to RPGs, still in love with it for its cinematic story and soundtrack, large roster of colorful characters, customization, steam punk world of balance and post apocalyptic world of ruin). Illusion of Gaia (it's been over two decades since I've played it and memories of it are starting to fade, I gotta go back and play it soon). Legend of Zelda ALTTP (a young nerd's dream, swords, sorcery, puzzles, monsters, two parallel worlds to explore light and dark, a ton of gadgets and gizmos at your disposal, and a princess, what's not to love? Secret of Mana (not just a game, a work of art, with its rich, lush and organic world teeming with life and energy, its graphics and music are simply gorgeous). Act Raiser 2 (while Act Raiser may've had its Sim Cityish mode, I preferred 2 for its graphics, music and most of all its deeper and more versatile combat and platforming). Either Street Fighter 2 Turbo (preferred its sound, music and speed) or Super Street Fighter 2 (for its larger roster of characters). While I had a lot of fun playing Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct they felt a bit gimmicky by comparison and MK's difficulty was way too imbalanced. Super Castlevania 4 (Castlevania is one of my favorite video game series for its spooky atmosphere, challenge and aside from the Metroidvanias 4 had the best control). Super Mario Kart (played battle mode waaay too many times with friends for it not to be here, was practically a ritual with some of them every time they came over). Super Metroid (also one of my favorite video game series for its exploration, upgrades, smooth control and sense of isolation and immersion in a strange and subterranean world). Man sometimes I forget just how amazingly groundbreakingly trailblazing the SNES was, best console forever, for me, bar none.
Great list! I'd have to include ActRaiser, DKC and Demon's Crest in there somehow, though. I might bump SimCity, OgreBattle and FFIV for them, but that's nitpicking.
My personal list: 1. Chrono Trigger 2. Final Fantasy 6 (3) 3. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 4. Earthbound 5. Final Fantasy 4 (2) 6. MegaMan X 7. Super Metroid 8. Super Mario World 9. Donkey Kong Country 2 10. Breath of Fire 2
Nice list man! Snes system had so many great games.. Still play them today, i'm so close at finishing mario rpg! *Hey i thought your favourite FF game was FFX :D
Great picks! Chrono Trigger is the one I would put at #1, however. The pinnacle of 2-D graphic art on the SNES, in my opinion. Ever notice that both _Trigger_ and _FF6_ have player skill sections that are infamously hard to get through--and on the SNES original console, you couldn't save in the middle of them?
BoF 2 for the snes (and BoF 3-4 on PS1) also has really amazing art too, rivals (BoF 1 is also on the snes, but it's just not as beautiful, and not as good as a rpg, it feels almost more like a NES rpg, but that's insulting to some nes RPGs, which are really good, laughs, BoF 1 was like capcom's trial run at making a rpg, as it likely was their first time making a rpg, laughs) Also, Trials of Phantasia (snes), is really one of the top tier snes rpgs for its art/visuals/etc ("anime like scale") Seiken Densetsu 3 (snes) also has better art/graphics too, much better than SoM, it looks really good too (not talking about the recent remake of it as "Trials of Mana", as that's totally different art/etc, lol)
Did I miss any of your favorites on the SNES? Let me know what I got right and wrong.

Solid Top 10 list. I would swap Secret of Mana with Terranigma
@@bw2273 That is a truly great game and I wouldn't blame you, but I only considered games released in North America for this.
@@ConejoZing true! I am an RPG heavy guy, that's for sure. No question how good the MegaMan X games are!
@@Xygor I disagree, it's a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.
Final fantasy 3 (6) changed my life. I played through it so many times as a kid. It was my gateway to all the other great rpgs on the system.
We both loved it then!
Final Fantasy II was so amazingly groundbreaking to me. I went from an RPG fan to completely hooked.
It totally was, especially for when it was released!
Its still one of my Favs to this day. The Story twists blew my mind as a Kid and showed me that Games could tell an amazing tale. The music was also the best and still is my Fav FF Score by far.
@@nobalkain624 I play that game (ROM file in emulator) once every 3 years.
Same same same! =D
It's hard to put into words the feeling of how good Final Fantasy VI was at the time. The story was mesmerizing, and the graphics were second to none. The music sealed the deal. So true, well said!
The memories of Secret of Mana, SMRPG, Chrono Trigger, FF4 and 6 here... just superb.
So true!
Great list full of amazing games.FF3 is also my favorite - still listen to the ost today and the game aged really well.
Couldn't agree more!
Totally agreed, would love that!
Great list! Final Fantasy 2(4) is my favorite game in the franchise. Super Metroid is an absolute masterpiece. It never gets old!
It's such a classic, FF4 in many ways is the epitome of Final Fantasy. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic list, most I have on my top 10 as well. SimCity is also a personal favorite that I still love. The OST is in my car on a snes plaaylist and it still invokes nostalgia of hours spent making crazy cities. Such a wonderful system, its really hard to narrow it down to 10.
Thanks! I know many top 10 lists probably don't have that one, but man, I put so much time into it.
Here is mine.
1. Super Mario World
2. Megaman X
3. Legend of Zelda : A Link to the Past
4. Final Fantasy 6
5. Chrono Trigger
6. Final Fantasy 4
7. Donkey Kong Country 2
8. TMNT : Turtles In Time
9. Kirby Super Star
10. Super Punchout / Street Fighter 2 / Mortal Kombat 2 / Super Metroid / Castlevania 4 / Super Gouls n Ghosts / Super Adventure Island / Ogre Battle / Final Fantasy V / Tactics Ogre / Sim City / Joe n Mac / Breath of Fire 2 / Dragon Quest #'s / EarthBound / Super Mario Kart / Super Mario All Stars / Starfox / Donkey Kong Country 1&3
Super Nintendo easily has the greatest library of all time.
Great list! I can understand these choices. With your number 10, you can see how hard this was for me!
Great, glad you thought so! I have such a strong connection with that game. There really was nothing like it for me when I was young.
Kkkkk
I can't tell you how much I agree with your list. I had an amazing childhood because of these games
Excellent, glad you approve!
Making a top 10 list for the SNES is a brave move considering how many really amazing games there are for the system.
Your list was perfectly acceptable as they are most of my favorites. I am not as big of a fan of Metroid as everyone else even though I concede that it is really good.
It really was hard for the exact reason you noted!
Love it.
Thank you, glad you love it! We were in the same boat!
Pretty good list. Here are some of my favorite SNES titles:
-Mario Kart
-Turtles in Time
-Zelda
-Star Fox
-Donkey Kong
-Mario World
-Mortal Kombat
-Yoshi's Island
-Illusion of Gaia
I only played sim city on the PC never the snes version. That game was fantastic. After you save your giant city you would load it and spawn disasters and watch everyone die. Pretty great.
Yours is a great list too! Thanks for the feedback. I actually liked Sim City more on SNES than PC!
Every single game you have on your list I have played through and absolutely loved. I can't even pick a number 1 from this list. They are all number 1 in my mind.
Great, you can see how difficult it was for me then!
When it comes to the SNES, a top 10 leaves you wanting, you need at least a top 20 or 25, such a wonderful console
I have so much awe towards this community that shares the same love for these timeless classics, sincerely, it's endearing as these childhood times were truly the golden years. Only those who lived it can know and express what is written in these comments, true gold, much
Glad you liked it! That’s our era!
I was so conflicted when we were getting into top 3, not knowing how SMW or DKC would figure into the list -- but I fully endorse this top 10, you got it spot-on. Still never played any Castlevania games, but besides that, sequencing and everything is right on for me too.
Thanks, both of those games are honorable mentions for sure!
Yea, i agree with your assessment in regard to FF6, The story is excellent, the music is unique and the game mechanics is at the top of what a Snes rpg can offer. One of the best RPGs ever made.
Right on, glad you agree! Who was your favorite character in it?
FF6 literally: let's just throw in every single type of game mechanic there is that we can think of... which is good and bad, lol (great/bad, lol, especially if a power gamer, as its very complex and confusing on what's best/optimal/etc, and lots of different choices/characters/etc to do as well too)
but ya, FF6 is TOP TIER, but for me, it is beaten out by Lufia 2, the PERFECT rpg (and not just for the snes, it's the best rpg of all time, only tied with TES: Morrowind, for the computer, laughs)
------------------
my top 5 best snes RPGs of all time:
1. Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals
2. Final Fantasy 6
3. Breath of Fire 2
4. Chrono Trigger
5. Ogrebattle: March of the Black Queen
none of the other snes RPGs compare to these 5 snes RPGs, they're just in lower tiers than these top 5 snes rpg
Pretty decent list. Here's my 10 (not like anyone asked):
Battle Cars
Bulls vs Blazers and the NBA Playoffs
Krusty's Super Fun House
MechWarrior
Monopoly
Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures
SimEarth: The Living Planet
Ultima: The Black Gate
Young Merlin
Haha, for real? Can't tell if troll or....
@@Xygor 😉
I would have moved a few around and swapped out some in the list with some from your honorable mentions but honestly I cannot criticize any of your choices other than adding Illusion of Gaia. Bravo. Absolutely Bravo.
Fair enough, I can understand the love for Illusion of Gaia!
I feel like SimCity doesn’t get enough love on the SNES. that game had me entertained for hours.
Exactly! Such an overlooked classic. I think it was better than the PC version because of the special gifts you get.
Chrono Trigger is still the one game I really want to play! I still haven’t found a SNES copy or DS copy. I gotta hope it gets a switch remaster.
It's still worth playing all these years later! I hope it gets an HD-2D remake!
@@Xygor: That would be so cool if it did!
@@nathanbyberg let's cross our fingers!
@@Xygor: 🤞
I remember playing so many games on the SNES and a lot of them are still better than most games out today.
It is a massive achievement of the 90s that we were blessed so much with the SNES.
EDIT - One could argue that you could easily rank the Top 50 SNES games and there would be favorites for everyone.
So true!
@@Xygor Oh darn, I lost the heart because you replied just as I was adding to the comment.
1. Chrono Trigger
2. Final Fantasy III
3. Donkey Kong Country 2
4. Super Metroid
5. Legend of Zelda: ALTtP
Great list! All fantastic games.
Awesome list! Really enjoyed this video format. I think this might be the first top ten list for the SNES that has not included Mega Man X. So many great games on this system. Many many hours. Thank you for the nostalgia trip!
Thanks a ton!
Agree with the top 2! Especially with number 1 being my favorite on not only the SNES, but all time! 👍 Also agree on the soundtrack! I love that you had a lot of Squaresoft titles on there. The golden era of RPG’s IMO
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Wow.
Your top five are my top five.
Just an incredible line up.
It was a good time to be a kid in those days, watching the progression and passion of these stories evolve.
I still come back and play these every few years.
It's like visiting old friends.
Right on, good taste!
@@Xygor My thoughts exactly. Final Fantasy VI in particular has inspired and shaped many of my own creative endeavors ever since those early years.
Your channel is great, Good Sir. Keep it up!
@@JohnDWJ thanks a ton!
I totally agree with your list as far as all the games you mentioned. SNES was my favorite system as I was born in 1985. The only ones I would disagree with is that I would probably switch castlevania with Super Mario World. Otherwise your list is perfect. I love all the games you mentioned including the honorable mentions.
Fair enough, I appreciate your view!
Space Megaforce was one of the best shoot em ups on the system, no doubt, but I like Axelay more!
"And on that day the world was changed forever."
Playing Final Fantasy 3 (6) for the first time when it came out has never left me. It's tied with Lunar: The Silver Star for Sega CD as the RPG I've replayed the most in my life.
Such a great game!
It's tough to not have Super Mario World near the top of the list, it is still my favorite Mario game, the graphics and gameplay still hold up incredibly well today. It's one of my go to retro games that is in constant rotation on my switch and SNES.
I understand how that would be a big omission. It's my favorite Mario game ever!
Super Mario World is the goat in my opinion.
Super mario world is still my favourite gane ever even at the ripe old age of 44 😆
@@CraigMead. it's a classic!
It really was!
It’s so hard putting a top 10 together. I have so many great memories with the Super NES!
It really was! Hope you enjoyed it!
Excellent list. All of those games deserve to be in there.
For me in no particular order:
Super Mario World
Castlevania IV
Secret of Mana
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VI (probably my favorite too)
Chrono Trigger
Super Metroid
A Link to the Past
Donkey Kong Country II
Terranigma
All great games that deserve attention!
Solid list! Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma notably missing 😁 am I the only Gemfire lover out there?
Terranigma wasn't released in the US, but yes, both were great! I have reviewed Gemfire.
FF4, FF6, Chrono Trigger, Secret Of Mana, Super Mario RPG, A Link To The Past, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country Trilogy etc….Are straight goated! 🐐 Aww to be a kid again 🤤
So many great games on this system, weren't there?
I totally agree with your choice. This video makes me to play the game again. I only miss Megaman X from your choice. Thanks for the video of retro gaming. Long live Retro Gaming Community
Glad you liked it! Mega Man X is great too!
@@Xygor Yes. This is your choice and your opinion. I appreciate it. This top 10 is amazing...
Illusion of Gaia is one I remember buying the day it came out and getting a crappy shirt that I loved, and then pouring hours into it and loving every minute of it.
That's a great game too!
Glad you liked it!
The SNES is My favorite console of all times and it has my two favorites JRPGs of all times , Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger , pure gold.
Sounds about right to me!
Thanks for your inputs, this was a hard list to make!
Thanks for the list man it's a really fantastic one. The nostalgia rush was awesome.
Glad you enjoyed it!
yes, i never had such emotional ties to a game since ff3. i can remember searching the world for ways to bring back general leo and rachel, locke's girlfriend, and seeing if there was one more dream that shadow would have. then someone mentioned chrono trigger and when i played that one, i could not believe it was older than ff3, it was also very fun to play, especially when you can play through with all your previous stats and items. and all the different endings
Right on, glad we have the same great memories of it!
FF6 just has that epic (and very dark) scale and great gameplay too (especially if like power gaming, lots of choices, as that's literally what they did with FF6: let's just throw in nearly every single type of mechanic into the game, laughs, which is both good and bad, lol), that can't be beaten by any other RPG, though BoF 2 comes close to it
however, Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals, beats out FF6 for me, as it's just the best RPG of all time, as it's the only RPG that really has some really deep life lessons, including with love and etc, that you can only truly appreciate when older, it's really emotional, and got great life/love lessons, which is what puts it over FF6 for me, along with its amazing game play and features too, it's just truly the perfect RPG, and that's the only reason it beats out FF6 and BoF2, laughs
Chrono Trigger is very good, but it's got some issues for me, which is why it gets beaten by FF6, BoF2, and Lufia2
---------
my top 5 best snes RPGs of all time:
1. Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals
2. Final Fantasy 6
3. Breath of Fire 2
4. Chrono Trigger
5. Ogrebattle: March of the Black Queen
none of the other snes RPGs compare to these 5 snes RPGs, they're just in lower tiers than these top 5 snes rpgs
@@redmoonbloodmoon3161 Lufia 2 was great. First game I can remember that ever made me cry. That ending was quite unexpected back in that era of rpg's.
@@redmoonbloodmoon3161 all of those RPGs are great!
That’s such a great overlooked RPG! I really had fun reviewing that one.
Agree. Tengai Makyou Zero is amazing. I recommend Treasure of the Rudras and Terranigma.
@@TVans-vs3gn TERRANIGMA BABY!
Snes had such a mind blowing amount of 10/10 games. Hard to make a list even with a top 25 and if you included games not released in North America a top 50!
So true, such a great library, so this was tough!
No.10 0:56 secret of mana
No.9 2:12 super castlevania 4
No.8 3:35 sim city
No.7 5:09 ogrebattle
No.6 6:17 super Mario rpg
No.5 7:41 final fantasy 4/2
No.4 9:18 super Metroid
No.3 11:12 the legend of Zelda link to the past
No.2 12:37 chrono trigger
No.1 13:58 final fantasy 6/3
Awesome list. Sure you didn't have one of the more classic names in there, but rhat is also what makes the list good.
That's true!
Awesome review! My personal list would have included Megaman X, and possibly Illusion of Gaia
I can understand that, both great games!
Right on, that's a great couple of games I didn't include also. So many fantastic ones on the SNES.
I love your picks, dude. I have such fond memories of these games. The soundtracks alone give me goosebumps
Thanks man, glad you think they're at least respectable! And yes, so many good soundtracks.
It's a great game, but got edged out! I definitely think Super Mario World deserved an honorable mention though.
I think that the SNES Mini started out with the games "Super Mario World", "The Legend Of Zelda - A Link To The Past" and "Super Metroid";
that feels like a very solid list of launch titles to me.
It is!
Great list. the SIM addition was out of no where..
Yeah, I bet that throws people off the most! Thanks for the compliments, all of the games you listed are great.
@@Xygor Your next TOP10 should fan translated games and pal only region games =D.
After playing video games for over 20 years including modern gaming, Super Mario World is still the most important game of my life. It introduced me to art and game design which my favorite part of gaming.
That's some pretty high praise! I'd say it's the best Mario game ever!
@@Xygor Nah fam, the masterpiece of all platformers

Great list Dave. I’d probably put Chrono at 1, Super Mario World at 2 and FF6 at 3.
All great games, this is understandable!
Man I think you pretty much nailed the lineup.
Thanks, glad you think so!
Sweet top 10 list. With so many excellent games on the SNES, it's fun to look at the top lists from different people. I would put Mega Man X2 and Mega Man 7 on my list.
Both are great games so I can understand that! Glad you liked it.
Thanks for your thoughts and memories of these great games!
Growing up in the 90s was awesome, thanks in part to this game console.
Thanks for watching!
Dang im really a SNES kid, played almost all of those on SNES, and a few on emulator around the GameCube era. Only one I never played was Secret of Mana. SM RPG was my first RPG and things like equipping characters made me fall in love with rpgs.
Excellent, that was such a great game that blended Mario with Final Fantasy perfectly!
man that top 3 must have been so hard to debate on.. seriously!!! lol props on that.. i say chrono trigger #1, zelda #2, and ff6/3 as #3.
That really was hard for me!
Great list - but as an RPG fan, what is your take on EarthBound?
I liked it a lot, included it in my honorable mentions. I've reviewed it and done a storyline video on it!
Just 10? Snes is arguably the greatest of all time should’ve been a top 700
It was so tough to make, too!
It really was hard to!
Great video thanks. So hard to only do 10 for the SNES. I could do 50 easily. My favourite console of all time. I enjoyed games before it but it made me a gamer for life.
Thank you, you're right on how difficult it was!
Overall quality list. I personally place Super Metroid at #1 though because its probably in the top 3 games ever made on any platform.
Fair enough, it’s great!
Super Aleste is my favorite SNES/Super Famicom game. One of my favorite shmups of all time, and on my top 10 favorite games of all time list.
That's a really good one, but I prefer Axelay as far as space shooters go!
Glad to see Ogre Battle and Sim City on the list! Its impossible to only pick 10 games since the SNES has dozens of classics, but I would say DKC2 and Yoshis Island deserve honorable mentions.
Yes, so many great games on here!
I am playing the remake of secret of Mana through Steam. Beautiful and fluid graphics.
Right on, I haven't played the remake but lots of people agree with you!
Super Castlevania is a great game indeed but I actually think I like Bloodlines more! I kind of wish the devs or some fans of the series would make a hack or new game implementing both aspects of the 2 games!
Bloodlines was really great!
Great video, man.
I agree with your top 5, but I would take out Secret of Mana, Sim City and Ogre Battle. Although good games, they are beaten by Megaman X, Donkey Kong and Super Mario World, at least in my book. But it's cool to see diversity!
Thanks for your feedback, those are some great games also, so I understand!
I'd have a hard time picking between Chrono Trigger and FF3. I definitely poured more hours into Chrono Trigger, but FF3 was just so well done. The music is just fantastic. Too many good RPGs on the system 👍
Yes, both are just so darn good!
A solid list Of which i agree with , would add a honorable mention for Star Fox for pushing the limits of the SNES .
That's a great game too, good call!
I know I’m in the minority, but I loved Secret of Evermore! After playing SOM I was craving more and SOE hit the sweet spot for me🍺
It was really good, I need to review soon!
I liked Secret of Evermore more than Mana personally.
I had to post after he said that Mana was the best action RPG on the system. Evermore is so great and unique!
crazy list. no earthbound or ActRaiser? Zelda higher than metroid. You mad lad!
also thanks for including ogre battle!
It was a tough list to make!
(sadly never released in Japan so I cant find a super famicom version to play while i live here in Tokyo!) I had a lot of fun playing this with my brother or friends over and over again.
also - perhaps Megaman X
Thanks! Yes, Sunset Riders was really fun! There were a lot of titles that were so good and I don’t blame people for having substitutes.
Great list! I probably have 10,000 hours sunk into all those games on your list💪
Haha, nice, sounds like we loved a lot of the same stuff!
I probably got... 10,000+ hours sunk into... *EACH*.... rpg/game, laughs.... :P
Not only do I agree with your top 2, but they are 2 of my favorite games of all time in general. Ogre Battle is up there for me as well.

2) Zelda a Link to the past
3) Super Metroid
4) Final Fantasy III
5) Super Mario RPG
6) Turtles in Time IV
7) Super Castlevania IV
8) Donkey Kong Country
9) Super Mario All Stars
10) Super Mario World
Honor mentions to:
F-Zero
Contra III The Alien Wars
Secret of Mana
UN Squadron
Super Punch Out
Seiken Densetsu 3
Star Ocean
Act Reiser
Yoshie's Island
Donkey Kong Country 2
Great list, thanks for your feedback!
My own top 5, very biased and includes JP releases:
1. Fire Emblem Geneology of Holy War
2. Tactics Ogre
3. Front Mission: Gun Hazard
4. Lufia 2
5. Final Fantasy 6
Picking 10 is tough for me.
Right on, those are all amazing games!
Can't argue with much of the list. My top 2 would be the same as well. I still remember buying those games new as a kid. A friend and I played FF3 until the floating continent in our first play session (24 hours!). I always bounce off Mario RPG though. Not sure what it is about that game but I can never get into it.
Thanks, glad you liked it! Do you think FF6 or Chrono Trigger was better?
Pretty similar to my best of list, I would take out Secret of Mana, put Earthbound at #3 and move everything under 3 down one.
Right on, I can understand that!
Came to check that FFVI was the end. Was happy. Have a like.
Thanks!
@@Xygor hey thank you for producing the quality content I crave on a long car ride. Keep up the good work and have a great one. ❤️❤️❤️
Chrono and FF6 are always tied for me. Which one wins out largely depends on how I roll out of the bed feeling that day. Both just pure gold.
Yep, it's hard to pick between those two!
Right on, I can understand those rankings instead. That's a great list.
for the "hack and slash" side scrollers, my fav is:
knights of the round (snes) // this like many, were also (originally) arcade games too, back when you'd go to pizza places (or where-ever) with them, sighs... miss those days... and rushing straight from school to the video game rental stores, lol
it's a really good and fun game
(there's quite a few other such type of games, but a lot of them are too hard, and it'll take some time/work to look them all up, but it's something I should do, get a list of all of these types of games, as there's quite a lot of these action/"hack-n-slash"/magic-etc side scroller games)
Yes, it was hard! Both of those are great. Thanks for the feedback.
I just finally finished Lufia 2 and I really am trying to figure out what RPG to play next…but watching. This makes me want to play through FF6 again…what a game.
So true! Lufia 2 was awesome too.
My top 10 in no particular order:
Chrono Trigger (still the one and only to this day that I'm aware of, a time traveling JRPG, from the paleolithic to post apocalypse and practically everything in between, nothing before or since was this wide in scope, not to mention its diverse and lovable cast of quirky characters (a talking frog, robot and a cavewoman???
All great games! Thanks for chiming in with your favorites.
@@XygorThanks for sharing yours, FF4 and SMRPG nearly made my top 10, Sim City was great too and I've been meaning to give Ogre Battle a try.
Great list!
I'd have to include ActRaiser, DKC and Demon's Crest in there somehow, though. I might bump SimCity, OgreBattle and FFIV for them, but that's nitpicking.
All great games, thanks for your list!
My personal list:
1. Chrono Trigger
2. Final Fantasy 6 (3)
3. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
4. Earthbound
5. Final Fantasy 4 (2)
6. MegaMan X
7. Super Metroid
8. Super Mario World
9. Donkey Kong Country 2
10. Breath of Fire 2
Thanks for sharing yours!
Great list duder, I 100% agree with your number one spot.
Great, sounds like we have similar taste!
Nice list man! Snes system had so many great games.. Still play them today, i'm so close at finishing mario rpg!
*Hey i thought your favourite FF game was FFX :D
Thank you, glad you liked it!
I can totally understand putting Chrono Trigger at #1, it was fantastic!
BoF 2 for the snes (and BoF 3-4 on PS1) also has really amazing art too, rivals
(BoF 1 is also on the snes, but it's just not as beautiful, and not as good as a rpg, it feels almost more like a NES rpg, but that's insulting to some nes RPGs, which are really good, laughs, BoF 1 was like capcom's trial run at making a rpg, as it likely was their first time making a rpg, laughs)
Also, Trials of Phantasia (snes), is really one of the top tier snes rpgs for its art/visuals/etc ("anime like scale")
Seiken Densetsu 3 (snes) also has better art/graphics too, much better than SoM, it looks really good too
(not talking about the recent remake of it as "Trials of Mana", as that's totally different art/etc, lol)
