I don't have a RV, but endless hot water is NOT something I want--it is wasting water and these days water is not cheap. I love my regular tank gas heater.

I am leaning towards the same exact thought.

I recently purchased a new RV that is equipped with an on demand water heater and I really hate it. I don't have an issue with turning the water off when I take a shower to save on water. I do however, have an issue with turning it back on and having to wait for it to get hot again. It seems like I'm either freezing or getting scalded with no in between. I will change it out as soon as possible.

That is what we ended up doing. It's way better for boondocking / dry camping as well.

Tankless water heaters are computers with tons of components; each has the potential of something going wrong. Tankless has issues with clogging up so requires twice a year flushes that require a plumber since it is very complex to do this. Further, tankless will not operate when the power is down. My gas water tank water heaters will still deliver hot water with no power, and maintenance is a breeze yearly not requiring any special skill to do.

Funny how companies and even the government are pushing tankless. There is no way.

After long research, I saw your video. Once you said "I want to take off my tankless water heater and put the regular water heater", I said "STRONGLY AGEE"! If someone sees that the tankless is good for his Rving style, so its perfect. but we have to keep in our minds that the new technology is not always good for all conditions. The user who can judge, not the engineers, that's why engineers sometimes upgrade the new technology and make cars recall.

hello from the cool ozarks! did you make a video of your reinstall of water heater tank? what brand is itt? i uae heated wrap on sewer pipes and hoses that thermostaic contolled. tight lines!

I didnt make a video about reinstalling the water heater. I will look into highlights of the how to for that. I like the heat wrap idea. The biggest mistake I made was that I forgot to leave the tankless water heater turned on. It had a built in freeze sensor that would make it fire up and keep itself from freezing....MY VERY EXPENSIVE MISTAKE

You said you got solar and you got deep cycle batteries. Just put a heating pad on your tanks with a thermostat like a heated water hose. That way when the temperature drops it will keep everything just warm enough. I'm running into all the same problems I just bought a 35 ft Forest River hemisphere. I just turned on the gas heat to supplement the electric water heater. More than enough to take a hot shower if you don't leave it running constantly which is a waste anyway. I also had an air conditioner put in by the dealership and they obviously didn't seal it properly cuz now I have a squirrel living in the ceiling! I went to turn on the fan just to test it and it started banging and the blower did not work, brand-new! Just now replaced all the bulbs with LEDs and what a difference white bright light! I also just found out the campground I'm at Berkshire lake in Galena Ohio did not hook up the power correctly and AEP came out and found they had put the neutral wire instead of the power wire and it was barely hanging in touching a rusty screw they failed to tighten up! I was having all kinds of issues and now I know they didn't use a licensed electrician. I thought about adding an extra hot water tank but I really don't need it it's just me. We had a cold snap to and I forgot to dump the black and gray tanks and one of them has split open and now leaks so I've got to get in under the bottom cover and find the leak. For now since it's winter I just leave them open and drain right to the sewage. So I don't know if the power situation caused me to have almost $200 a month electric bills this past two months! That or this 1500w 100-foot heated hose plus the microwave plus the 1500w electric fireplace are killing me with the bills. It's a fun adventure everyday with this kind of thing but I prefer it to an apartment. Plus eventually I want to move it to a property somewhere to escape.

I hate to see when people have to fight through issues. Especially when they are out of their control. On the flip side though, we do learn a lot. I sure hope that you spit tanks won’t be to difficult to repair.

I'm in a unique setup. I'm a full-timer in a stationary toyhauler. I have a huge LPG tank (leased) with ability to check propane level from my phone and refill it once a year by delivery. I have 100 amps of 208V shore-power but I have to truck in water and sewage out. I dump my grey tank (french drain) anytime it's full but weather dependent. I've had cold-snaps of minus 25 C (-13 F) for ten days straight; too cold to dump the grey line then. I store fresh water in totes, one is under the fifth in an insulated and heated enclosure - and it works. I transfer to the RV when fresh tank is low - from the totes, using a pump mounted on the tote and a regular hose. I can transfer when temperature is below zero (C) but usually don't have to.
I had a 'on demand' gas water heater. I hated it. It took forever and a half to get hot water to the shower. And given I truck water in - I didn't want to waste that 18 seconds of water every time I turned the spray back on full - and it's nasty standing in there for 19 seconds before it's hot!
So I tucked a compact 23 US gal 208 Volt electric water tank in the storage locker below - it cleared by 1/2" and I tied the 208V supply from my conventional panel (also in the storage area). I added an electric area heater in there; the furnace has to deal with cold air from in there as its source so preheating that area makes the furnace more efficient and keeps the PEX pipes all warm and the shower hot water line stays warmer, longer. Sort of a win-win.
I intended to leave the on-demand system in-line (in case I go mobile or want continuous hot water for some reason) but I had to bypass it for now - found a leak at the cheap fitting on it and the electric tank works great so repairing the leak and reinstating the LPG heater is not a priority at all.
I am messing about with upgraded RV water pump for my setup with success. I use a higher flow and pressure SHURflo model and it's enough to make an RO system function, (a full-size domestic one I already had). So despite adding chlorine to my totes so that water stays clean - I drink near-perfect potable RO water without having to go out and buy it and I'm not 'settling for city water'.
The extra demand on the water pump is not without issues - it makes 'pump-noises' when it's running - takes about 3 hours to make a 5 gal jug and I do wear out the SHURflo higher flow pump faster. But I don't care! I rebuild the pump myself in 10 minutes and I keep a spare pump rebuilt and ready, and a spare rebuild kit on the shelf; I no longer have to go into town to buy water. And I have a fabulous shower - that's the other bonus from the bigger pump - higher flow and higher pressure = great shower. But yeah - I do go through more water.
In my opinion, the TANK hot water system - when all else is equal - uses WAY less water overall AND gives better temperature control than the 'on-demand' LPG system that was bragged about so highly. For me - the on demand is a fail and the electric tank is a win because it's a 208 V residential water heater.
    Cheers.
(PS - I've heard it recommended to adjust the flow on the pump to change the temperature of the water. Not ideal - but can prevent a burn.)

I see that you really put a lot of forethought in your builds and projects. I was thinking about the residential water heat, if I could find one that is 110v.
