It's a natural thing - almost every single male vocalist has trouble hitting those higher notes as they get older. But Ray still has an excellent range that's far beyond what most people can hit comfortably. And I think he makes tasteful vocal changes, so you hardly miss the high notes imo.
Just by not getting enough exposure to enough people..... If they would have gotten a video on daytime rotation on MTV... or had a singe that was a nationwide radio hit... Fates Warning would have been HUGE!! But, there are many bands in that situation... getting a record deal is only half the battle. Getting your music heard by enough people is another challenge altogether.
It's the editor you need to be pissed at mate. Great performance though, music is note-perfect and Adler does OK too though I can't help thinking if he stopped jumping around a bit he'd be able to hold some of the notes a bit longer.
As far as progressive metal lead guitarists go, it's a real shame people have passed up on giving Frank the credit he deserves. He's very technically skilled, but also has a distinctive melodic style in his soloing that always lets you know it's him and I think he's definitely up there with guys like Petrucci and Romeo no offense to them.
I read an interview with Ray in which he admitted that he lost his voice due to singing with poor technique for years. He also went on to say he wasn't too fussed, and that he would feel silly singing high all the time.
One of my top 2 Fates songs, and one of my top 5 fav songs of all time :p

@Knuse Touring. It's easy to keep your voice when you're not singing, straining your voice every other night for decades.

That is my biggest complaint also, it drives me insane!!!!
@freethinkers15
etsi etsi!!!!!
they are
I miss some high notes at age 38 ... Ray misses them all the time now ... What did he DO with his voice? Even Gillan did better at that age ....
I don't think Ray looking bad on this video. He might cannot take highs, but the voice is quite prog-metal.
Think I read somewhere that he had bronchitis before this show

Ray was so fading .... How can a man get so bad in so few years. ... ?
Ain't nobody got time for that!
Too bad that Ray don't manage the higher notes these days. A band too much unknown in my point of view (Get it? POINT OF VIEW ... Hehe) ....
