I went to many Oakland games in the 80's and he was the greatest, most impactful player I ever saw play the game. You win a game by scoring more runs than your opponent. The stolen bases put him in position to score runs and he scored over a hundred runs 12 times including the 3 seasons I saw him play in Oakland. But the intangible often overlooked is the effect he had on opposing pitchers any time he was on base which as much as 46% of the time. Time after time I saw pitchers implode after he ended up on first. The high lights don't show how many times pitchers threw back on him and that was insane, often 3 or 4 times in a row (I saw over 10 throwbacks a couple of times, what the fans booing like mad, followed by a steal) This would kill their concentration on the hitter and the batters behind rickey would feast. Several times I saw what I can to call the "walking triple". A pitcher would merely walk Rickey and then find him on 3rd base 2 pitches later. He struck fear in pitchers just as much as any power hitter you ever saw because they knew if he got on base he was going to embarrass them. He regularly hit over a hundred singles and walked over a hundred times and stole over a hundred bases which led to over 100 runs scored. So he's on the first 200 times and steals a base about half the time. He's on first around 200 times and scores half the time. In 82 he was on first 235 times (singles plus walks) and scores 119 runs. (forget about the SB's, runs win games) partially because pitchers blow up when he's on. Has to be in the conversation of the all-around best player ever!
You talk about Rickey Henderson...better get used to the term: All-Time!
Legendary player!
Lead-off legend.
A guy who's fast and throws left but bats right, in the "slow" box. I can't think of another player like that.
My favorite player of all time
Ricky runs! Walk, steal, steal, pop up home he comes. Carney Lansford would take pitch after pitch fouling off the strikes while Ricky stole base after base. My all time favorite player.
Almost everything he did was a highlight
If I live to be 1000 Rickey Henderson will always be my favorite player.
Happy 65th birthday Rickey.
Rickey Henderson was beast on stealing bases.
He was a great ball player.
I loved watching him steal third base. Fun baseball.
