- There was a player so fast that a pitcher attempted to pick off an MLB record 17 times in a single inning - and it didn’t work! This same player also holds a few stolen base records that might never be broken! In terms of longevity, Rickey Henderson has everyone beat by a landslide when it comes to stealing bases. But if we’re looking at peak capabilities, there may not be anyone better than this forgotten stolen base king. The INSANE Prime series will return next week, but today is the start of a new series. It will be known as “In The Shadows,” where I highlight an individual player, streak, or accomplishment. For episode 1, we’ll be focusing on Rickey Henderson’s shadow, a player not in the Hall of Fame, but one that was a menace on the base paths, and did so from day 1. That player is Vince Coleman.

Rickey Henderson was a complete leadoff hitter in every sense. Vince Coleman was just an extremely fast athlete.

Rickey’s on base numbers are absurd!
And Coleman was a hothead who scrapped his career with a bad attitude.
Turns out speed is pretty much all you need.
Vince was a hell of a base stealer but couldn't hit for crap. Wasn't quite as bad as Billy Hamilton (the modern one, not the OG) but definitely nowhere near as good a hitter as the other base stealing greats (Rickey, Raines, Brock, Wills, ect).
This a really good idea for a series.

Rickey Henderson's shadow was so huge that it also stretched up into Canada, hiding away Tim Raines' brilliance as well. Raines was amazing, but still took 10 years to get into the Hall, even though his skills should have put him in immediately.
I remember it being pointed out when people were advocating for him to get into the HOF that his caught stealing % was actually lower than Rickey's. Obviously Rickey made more attempts to steal, but still.
Dalton Pompey was as fast or faster but wasn't much of a player and got cut by the Toronto Blue Jays. He was as fast or faster than Ricky both played for the Blue Jays in different eras.
Remember Otis Nixon...?? Crazy underrated base runner.
As a braves fan, I love Otis Nixon. I do think it's funny both him and Coleman were known to dabble in the nose candy...wonder if it helped them steal bases

I loved the Rickey/Vince stolen bas3 battle when I was a kid. I watched the A's as a kid with my dad, and Rickey was his favorite player. I always remeber Vince Coleman being almost equally as amazing as Rickey when he reached base. I believe stealing bases will always be the most exciting play in baseball. Love the video!

Do one of these on guys who were generally under appreciated or had injury hampered careers like Eric Davis, Joe Carter, Howard Johnson, George Bell, Chili Davis, Pedro Guerrero, Steve Sax, Tim Raines, Julio Franco, Andy Van Slyke, Danny Tartabull, Cecil Fielder, Kevin Mitchell, Ruben Sierra, Wally Joyner, Bobby Bonilla, John Kruk, Ellis Burke or Ron Gant.
David Wright.....But damn, you did mention some of the best players of my childhood who don't get mentioned enough when it comes to guys who just don't get their due. Bonilla has been turned into a Mets joke but that's only with people who don't remember that he played much of that first year with them hurt. And then they ignore the 2 All Star caliber seasons he had for the Mets. They also ignore that EVERYBODY was trying to sign Bobby during his prime free agency year. He just did AND SAID a lot of knucklehead stuff. If people were honest then they'd be happy to see a guy who hasn't played in a couple decades - STILL GETTING PAID. Especially as much as people just LOVE to talk about players who've gone broke. But Bobby had a lawyer who was smart and basically got Bobby (and most of his other clients) an AWESOME PENSION! Great comment though. Had Eric Davis had a career where he was mostly healthy - he would be mentioned in the same breath as Bonds, Griffey, Mantle, Mays and Trout.
I was a baseball-obsessed 12 year old in 1987. Eric Davis that year was on another level (as was Kal Daniels, albeit in half a season). He had power & patience, was as fast as anyone, and played a very good center field before injuries really hit.
Eric the Red had all the talent in the world. Too bad about his health, he could have been one of the all-time greats.
When I was young in the 80's there was a ton of base stealers. I love that part of the game. It's a lost art but some of my favourite players of all time were base stealing threats. Coleman, Lofton, Henderson, Vizquel, Alomar, White, Pierre, Raines, Reyes.

If I remember correctly, his .324OBP was mostly a high average, not a lot of walks. He swung to get to first so he could take second.
Can you imagine how many SBs Rickey and Vince would have in today's rules about only being allowed to attempt two pickoffs

I’m glad you enjoy it! Yeah unfortunately they can’t be much longer as I’m currently managing a full time college workload. I had to make a series that was a bit shorter and easier to accomplish. The prime vids take 50+ hours so I needed something that would give me a breather every other week.

Back at a time Omar Vizquel was seen as one of the greatest defensive short stops of all time Rey Ordonez broke into MLB and immediately stunned everybody with his defensive wizardry. Great hitters seem to get all the credit and attention but I can’t think of any other MLB player who’s defense put asses in seats like Ordonez did in his prime
Vince Coleman is a legend here in St Louis. He was the human embodiment of Whiteyball. Im really hoping that they get him to work with Victor Scott II. Vince Coleman wants to and has reached out.

Not that this adds anything to his legacy, but as a kid I got (and still have) a figurine of Ryne Sandberg fielding a throwdown to second as a player is sliding in. Starting Lineup could've chosen any player to be that base runner, and they chose Vince Coleman.
Whitey Herzog: "The only base Vince cannot steal is first base". Rickey and Rock knew you have to get on base to do anything.

I’ll say he just lurked in the shadows of the steroid era and delivered a hit every time it seemed. All time PH HR leader is a fun title to own. Clutch factor 100. I don’t think he got involved with the juice either
I think Kevin Brown would be a perfect candidate for this series. From 1995-2000 he averaged a 2.55 ERA with about 240 IP/season at the height of the steroid era. His prime also happened to coincide with the end of Greg Maddux's run of four straight Cy Youngs, Roger Clemens' second prime, including back to back Cy Young's in 97 and 98, and Pedro Martinez having maybe the greatest back to back pitching seasons ever. He also had to compete with a prime Randy Johnson, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz. His six year peak rivals that of several hall of famers and is largely forgotten.

Vince Coleman was indeed fast, but I would argue that Tim Raines is more comparable to Rickey Henderson. Raines' offensive output was greater than Coleman's in pretty much every way. In total, he collected more hits, scored more runs, hit more homers, got on base more, and even stole more bases.
In a complete player sense I totally agree with you, but for a video focused primarily on base running Vince was extremely comparable in terms of efficiency and total bases stolen
With the new baseball rules, if a guy can get pitchers to come off the mound one too many times, 50 times they could essentially break the record without even running.
Rod Carew stole home plate 7 times, was a switch hitter and was a threat to steal any base
It would be good to see a deep dive on Bobby Grich and how he only got 2.6% HOF votes.

Vince was good at stealing bases. But, Henderson was worth about 9 Vince Coleman's in his career. Henderson would have been a HOF'er even if he had never stolen a base in his career.

If he would have had more years & stayed consistent who knows how many more (if any) times would he have got over 100 steals in a season. As it is the first 3 years is pretty damn good. Only 8 years over 100 games & 6 of those over 120 games,5 years over 145 games. Amazingly he's still 6th all-time career.
He played on the terrible astro turf in St. Louis. The base path was astro turf instead of dirt. Made him fast though.

I honestly wouldn't pick either Ricky or Vince as the stolen base king. They got thrown out too much compared to Tim Raines.
Dalton Pompey was as fastest I've ever seen but wasn't much of a player so he didn't get on base much with the Blue Jays when he played.
