Thunder is the character that caused my fall from grace from being a honorable shoto player to a degenerate grappler player. The realization that command grabbing people from a third of the screen away was way more fun than grinding people down was a life changer, and I've never looked back.
The more I learn about this game, The more I find out That it was heavily underrated. In my opinion I think this is like a western version of Guilty gear
Aside from what you told us in the vid, the music in this game is absolutely top tier and I love how it's dynamic. Fulgore's theme is so hype, even though I mostly play Aganos
Killer Instinct is easily my favorite fighting game of all time. The music was what first drew me to it, Mick Gordon, along with Celldweller and Atlas Plug, crafted an OST that blows every other fighting game OST out of the water. My first main was Omen, I loved his insane hitcount and just utterly ballistic mixups. And then...I picked up Cinder. Easily my big main in the game, everything from his insane air combos to his plasma bombs and setting people on fire is just so cool to me. And that THEME!!! "Inferno" is unquestionably my favorite KI track, and a big reason why I picked up Cinder in the first place. Plus for a character as technical as Cinder is, he is actually super fun to practice with, and his potential feels borderline limitless. Right behind him though is Shadow Jago. I've always found the "evil protag" archetype fascinating in fighting games and Shago? He lives up to it and THEN SOME. I've never had so much fun with a character who I can best describe as "The time for talk is over, TIME TO PUSH BUTTONS". I get that he has a bit of a nasty reputation in the KI community but goddamn he's too much fun. Plus I love the super heavy metal remix of Jago's theme that Mick Gordon made for him. Then there's my girl Kim Wu. If Kung Lao from Mortal Kombat was a chick, used nunchucks, had a Dragon Spirit guiding her, and was actually likeable, the result would be Kim Wu. I always found her super fun originally, as her insane damage and solid mixups were always satisfying to see pulled off. Combined with her Dragon Cancels allowing you to rush people down more quickly, or juggle them after a big launcher, not to mention her parry, Kim Wu is easily my wild card main in KI. Her buffs in the anniversary edition made me love her even more, as now she can actually get in on people a bit more easily and snuff out armor moves more consistently!! I know this comment is long, but I'm really happy seeing the amount of love KI has been getting the last few months after nearly 5 years of next to nothing. Ever since they announced the 10th Anniversary Update at EVO 2023 I haven't been able to put the game down, and I am so happy to see so many people enjoying it.
That's why I love KI a lot of it's characters are pretty unique and once you get the combo system down it's lets you effectively lets you play almost every character. Still remains to be one of my favorite fighting games and that likely won't change also it should go without saying the soundtrack is goated.
I remember seeing the Hisako trailer when it released, and she was instantly a favourite because of her design, but I didn't have an Xbox or decent PC at the time. I should definitely give the game another try, it looks likes a blast. Great video!
this would be the one and only fighting game i'd play if I could ever get the hang of manauls, literally everything about this game is perfection but I'm just too bad.
Fulgore is my favorite character in this game because the way this meter works with the reactor gives me big Order-Sol vibes (although the bonuses you get from the reactor are more movement bonuses as opposed to stronger specials), and as a filthy Order-Sol player I approve. The two of them made me realize that my taste in fighting game characters are either Ryu or the character with a unique power up mechanic that makes them super busted and there's no in-between.
I owe a lot to KI. It was the first 2D fighting game that made appreciate that type of FG, as prior to that I had only played 3D fighters like Tekken and SC, and even then without any appreciation for the finer details. Without KI, I wouldn't have gotten into GG, SF, MK, MvC... And even then, KI is so unique when compared to anything else on the market. Long live Killer Instinct.
You know, I know nothing about KI but Hisako has always intrested me, and after your breakdown I have no doubt in my mind she would absolutley be my main if I was to ever pick up this game.
I played the absolute crap out of this game on the snes back in the day remember getting over 100 hitters on cinder and orchid. Always been more of a PlayStation guy other than halo of gow recently copped a cheaper smaller version of the console an I’m so addicted to this now it’s literally been 20+ years since I’ve played street fighter or mortal combat and I can’t put KI down. Having an absolute blast glad I found ur channel
i didnt get into the game until hisako entered the picture. she made me instantly pick up the game and fell in love with it again. her design, move set, music, stage. shes everything
Killer Instinct 2013 was the game that got me into Fighting Games I remember trying to play Thunder but couldn’t do the DP Input at the time so ended up switching to RAAM and just spinning my stick 360 degrees 💀
Hisako is the thing I was missing in my life. Scratches so many of my character bases at once (XRD sin/johnny, +r sol, 3S makoto) she’s one of the best fighting game characters out there.
As a first impression I was pretty down with the vibe of this game but when the covenant guy with an energy sword randomly appeared in the game I was sold lol, I can’t imagine what other characters it has
I remember watching the dev streams as they released the characters back in the day, and Hisako became one of my favorites. I like her move set, the creepy vibes, and her scream when Instinct is activated. Never became my main, but damn did I enjoy playing her.
God I've been playing KI for a long time and I'm glad it's getting the love it deserves. There is not enough good I can say about this game and I'm glad one of my favorite funny grappler man players for showing other people why it is based. In the words of one of my friends that I forced to play it, "Everyone has a gimmick, but none of them suck (except Rash pre-patch)" Loved your Jago tech breakdown, I play him a lot and I still learned some new things!
glad you made this video. i almost never played this game again, after a buddy showed me this game. I did not know about combo breakers. The final moment that made me say this game is trash, is he did a combo put the controller down and the game did this auto combo. i was like who would ever want to play a game where it is all automatic.
Grapplers and big bodies don't normally scare me (because I also play them lol) but the KI grapplers and big bodies like Aganos are one of the few characters of the archetypes that legitimately put the fear of God in my eyes when I see them. Prepatch Aganos punching you through his walls actually felt like he did that to you irl
This video speaks to my soul, I've always loved playing Raam and Jago and with this new patch I picked up a bit of Hisako. I go around and play alot of the roster too cause these characters are just so well designed and deeply interesting. This game is imo one of the best fighting games ever made and its a shame it isnt more popular.
I remember trying the game out since me and my friend joked about it and it had both Raam and The Arbiter in it. Game was quite fun for the short time we played it.
The learning curve is actually pretty low imo. Because you're not thinking much about combos due to the build-a-combo system, you go straight to what matters: neutral, mix-ups, and mind games. Pick it up and play. Get used to your options, figure out your opponents' habits, and most importantly, have fun!
KI 2013 is a game with a very low skill floor for new players, but possibly one of the highest skill ceilings in all of fighting games at the top end, lol. High end KI is legitimately mentally stressful, because you're always reacting to something - even when you're in the middle of getting hit with a combo you're analyzing each part of it and deciding whether to try and break it, or whether you've been tricked by your opponent to try and break it and they're going to COUNTER-break you. It's madness.
The Black Heart has another on-ryo and I will take any excuse to recommend that game, it's a great horror themed fighter, main caviat being no online or replays
I'm glad that you're not only a fellow grappler enjoyer but also a fellow shoto enjoyer too. I have a feeling you play Makoto too in 3S (if you play that) after seeing you play Hisako I initially did not expect to like Jago that much. I just wanted to learn the game from him but he very quickly almost became the main because I got addicted to playing him and is almost my most played character lol (Fulgore's still my ❤ tho). KI3 truly is a wonderful game with lovable & addictive characters.
for my money, thunder is the coolest fighting game grabbler. call of the earth (and especially shadow call of the earth) are actually the coolest. they have the same anticipation & snap that akatsuki's b-tatsu does in uni-i never get tired of landing these moves. and thunder's crow dash mix is a thing of beauty.
Never really gave this game a try (Since I'm more pre-occupied with Tekken) but the music in this game kicks some ass. Mick Gordon composes some fantastic tunes.
i just started playing KI because of the new update and i want to play RAAM , is it possible for you to make a guide for him just like potemkin ? You really leveled up my Potemkin so i am sure a RAAM video from you will do the same , so please if you want i would really like that !
just plug the Sajam Sandwich System (tm) in the beginning smh and if you want to edit the video some things i think could make things clearer: make light, medium and heavy different colors when explaining combos at the start explain what potential damage, KV meter, and ender levels are (and how different strength AD's/linkers build them) mention that almost every button is special cancelable explain shadow moves/meter either way, adding details like that would take your videos to the next level
I find it so tough to find a cahracter in KI. They all have so many tools but yet not as many as a Smash character lmao. I would really love to see you break down every char like that its very well done to help me decide
i think i might have played you lol. i played a 30 star hisako that fucking obliterated me. the biggest problem with the game is the steam version lacking ranked cross play, it's not the end of the world as you got exhibition but KI is kinda... free. like obviously there are good players. but outside of the hisako who i think was you lol. i haven't really lost a set after starting to grind with the update. a mate mentioned cause of the game pass getting alot of people to play who don't really play fighting games. i suppose my main question is are the main players for this game on ranked ? and if so would i need to get the windows store version ? that might be a pain due to being on linux though.
I honestly kinda dislike the look of Hisako but I do find the funny combos funny. I dunno who I would play, but... it looks like a fun game. They even have weird GBVS-like super enders where you get "ultimate" at the end or something. Usually I play some grappler character, or someone who has big damage. But there's a dinosaur in the game, as well as a dude from Halo with a shield mechanic, and that's just too cool to ignore.
It also has a robot with three different bodies you switch between at will, all with their own movesets and health bars. And an ogre with split personalities, where each personality has it's own moveset and you change between them at random - or you can punch yourself in the head to try and force the switch. And a gargoyle man who can summon minions from a portal that will walk back and forth and attack you. KI is dope.
So glad Killer Instinct was able to return after 10 years! You know, I have a feeling, if Iron Galaxy *ever* decides on making a sequel, is it possible that Microsoft could *potentially* buy/acquire Iron Galaxy?

@@nhlba3301 1. Lawd you type like a kid. Even if english isn't your first language, syntax is mostly intuitive, so communicate coherently (and no emoji spamming doesn't make up for the fact you're mostly unintelligible). 2. Most of what you're saying as critiques of the game seem to be just preference and fluff nonsense. Like wow, "TJ looks like an actual human being rather than an action figure, gross". Like, does Cinder having a mouth really detract anything? Cinder in KI og was literally just low poly dude built like an action figure on fire. Don't even get me started on the KI2 characters cus that game has some of the weakest character designs in a game even for the 90's with the rubbish same face thing the ladies there's got going on and the lame Conan the Barbarian stuff going on with Tusk. KI og and 2 for their time had some legendary stuff with its 90-cgi quality character models, but lets be real, the character design in them was mid. Yeah, some stuff in the latest game isn't on par with even some games that it came out with but its easily better looking than anything in the old games and has the characters actually have personalities beyond looking like cool action figures. I do agree the ultimates can be better but with how shafted the game's development cycle got and how much time has passed since they last had a proper update for the game, I think we'd be better off just begging for MS to actually allow a sequel to develop and thrive. 3. Referring to the gameplay critiques, I just simply disagree with a lot of your points, but its just preference at the end of the day cus the games are different. I will say that I personally like having to actually understand how and when to combo break than just timing a counter-intuitive input in a short timing window in the middle of a combo. Character gameplay is easily the best in the latest game. OG KI is only fun as a single player game cus the simple act of playing neutral in the game feels sluggish and normals can do more damage than some combos and the gameplay is just an opponent fishing to start a combo. KI2 is literally just KI1 with even more busted mechanics. Like no thanks I'd rather have character variability along with the mind games combo breakers and counter breakers and the instinct gauge and the revamped shadow meter allows you to achieve. KI1 and 2 also feel like dogsh*T to play if you play on anything that isnt an arcade stick because for some reason they want to you to perform awkward half-circle motions without the forward and back motions and charge moves in the middle of a combo in a game that has virtually no hitstop. If thats not counterintuitive gameplay then lol go eat your cake I guess.
I am not remotely surprised that we play the same 3 characters in KI.
KI is all what MK wanted to be when grown up but never could.
Man the music, the characters, and the community all amazing with this game.

It's on Steam, too. The Steam version is a buy-once and everything is unlocked sort of deal. A complete game.
Now it's free to play. You just doesn't have all the characters. It's nice to get to know before buying.
Aaaaaaaaaaaall these reasons ...
and its still just fancy rock/paper/scissors with an awesome soundtrack
Brilliant.

Awesome video!
I wish I was better at fighting games to enjoy them. 😅 KI always looks so immensely intimidating.
JAGO my great hero ...Killer Instinct should have a movie and an action cartoon series

The best rollback out there, and that since 2013 ish

and if you want to edit the video some things i think could make things clearer:
make light, medium and heavy different colors when explaining combos at the start
explain what potential damage, KV meter, and ender levels are (and how different strength AD's/linkers build them)
mention that almost every button is special cancelable
explain shadow moves/meter
either way, adding details like that would take your videos to the next level
Nice

It's too jank
