Moving to Lisbon, What's Happened So Far

- It's been a few days since I moved into my new apartment in Lisbon after signing a lease and I'm still in the middle of the preparation required for applying for a residency visa, which I'll do back in Bali.
In this video I talk about what I've experienced in the process so far, and why despite frustrations and setbacks I'm still so thrilled to be moving here.
I love the tidbit about the rude lady cooking chicken. Anyone that has spent some extra time in Portugal knows exactly what you mean. 😆😆

I am so happy for you! I know the feeling of pure joy when you wake up in a city or town that just speaks to you. I am also looking for my forever home and had considered Portugal a few months back. When I saw that you were making that move I was over the moon excited to learn. I say this as just a few months ago I was virtually exploring and considering Lisbon and Puerto myself; but as you've mentioned in this video you need to be financially prepared for the associated cost in making the move, and this I'm still working on.
I actually live in Bali now- Amed, Karangasem Regency to be more exact. I just secured my villa for one more year just the other day and have really felt grateful to live here for the past year. Bali has such a special place in my heart and although I decided to make it my SE Asian home base, I'm not sure that Bali is my final destination. I'm also finding it difficult to make friends here, especially as a single female with different interests. I've been blessed to have two really great friends that have made this experience so lovely, but haven't had any luck expanding and I'm not sure that will improve.
I've always loved Europe and can see myself living there long-term, I just have to make the plan and prepare. Admittedly, although I enjoy the freedom that my motor bike offers and how I love the views of the rice fields and Mt. Agung, I've come to realize how much I value transportation infrastructure, walkable cities, and quaint neighbors with character since living here in Indonesia.
I think, I have much to consider this year and will be following your experiential advice as you settle into Lisbon. I wish you well in your journey and hope we get a chance some day to cross paths and say a proper hello 🤗

Hey Adrien, I’m also in the process of applying for a visa to relocate to Portugal. It’s a process that really makes you commit! Oh, and thanks for sharing the story about the banking delays and Bankinter. I’m asking my consultant about them as I’ve not heard anything about my inquiry with BGD.

To apply for the visa you have to have a lease and a bank account in portugal so I came first to do those things as well as make sure I actually wanted to move here 😁

Hey Adrien. Can you please do a video about the new changesto the digital nomad visa? About the tax changes and possibly discontinuing the nomad visa bcz of price hikes.

Banks are weird in Europe but it's all related to anti money laundering rules. When I went to open a bank account in Madrid at one of the big 3 banks in a branch they asked for a tonne of documents too (ID, visa, bank statements, tax documents from my home country). But then I went to their online only subsidiary bank (owned by the same bank) and I only got asked for ID and visa. Strange indeed. Glad you are loving Lisbon mate. RE rent, I had to pay my rent 1 yr in advance plus 3 mths deposit because I have no history in Spain, the laws are apparently anti landlord and the rental market is highly competitive in Madrid.
Definitely a lot more complications in europe 😕

My dear Adrien, welcome back to 🇵🇹 Príncipe Real is 😍. I grew up there during my baby years @ Travessa de São Pedro off Rua da Rosa. It is as original a LIS neighborhood as it gets, mixing steeltown folk, literary bohemian types amongst bossy, no nonsense, sometimes gritty folk that take no bull. At one time it used to be a redlight district, and you find many characters like the cook full of "sharp edges" (for defense) but a majority with 💕 of gold. Opening a bank account in 🇵🇹 is a pain & heavily regulated w/foreigners because of 💵 laundering and terrorism security, so please be patient. Be careful as services may quote you prices, (commissions, estimates, etc) without IVA, and 23% on hundreds of € is a lot of dough. It's not like shopping for clothing, food or jewelr which includes IVA. Life & doing business here is a completely different ball game from the 🇺🇸. I know what u are going thru. Portugal is a country that baffles and surprises. It's ridiculously burocratic in many ways, but there is often unexpected flexibility. Flip the coin & it can be quite modern, simple and developed when least expected. 🇵🇹 teaches you to think outside the box, challanges your ideas of what is the "norm", teaches you patience, ponderance, and challenges you in many ways. Ultimately, for those willing to learn, it gifts you in so many simple but special ways as it takes you down the path of seridenpity.
