When a song have quality, the singer has a unique voice, don't need dancers, lights, fireworks, only need is soul and greatest musicians, like this song... Eurovision need quality.
I'm seemingly one of the very few who love this song. I remember reading that the lyrics were inspired by a lady they met who had faced some serious struggles in life and it made me sit and listen to the meaning. It changed the whole game for me. Do I think it will qualify for the final? If I'm honest, probably not...but I hope and pray it does because it is quality. It adds a very different feel to the mix of songs this year. Not everything has to be an overproduced generic eurobanger or a screeching dramatic power ballad! Every song doesn't need to have the current trend of the ethno-vibe for it to be good. I appreciate this and I'm glad they've come to my attention.
Most ESC fans underrate this kind of music, but I think this is a song that the juries will appreciate and possibly sneak into the final. It will stand out among all the "bops" for sure. Portugal is my favorite.
I did not know the back story and I love the song. But I love jazz sounds and this is relaxing to me (not boring) but I guess that’s just personal preference.

I love the song. I only learned about the backstory a day or a few hours before hearing the song - but didn't know it belonged to THIS song. So, going in to this song, I only realized it once he started singing. But it's not the backstory that draws me in - it's the romantic quality of this song - his voice is perfect, the song is lovely and it's a 10/10 because it moved me. And THAT is what counts for me. Hence my second favourite this year, Switzerland being number one

I love this song......i really think people are sleeping on Portugal this year. Reminds me of Cyprus 2016, John Kyriannis. Not a song for the average ESC fan but it has some quality to it. The juries from the 2nd semifinal may like it as it is in a sea of female uptempos, and let's face it, it's impossibe for all the female bops to go through. Portugal also has some friendly countries voting in this semifinal: Spain, Switzerland, France and United Kingdom. And I suspect that it may get televotes from countries such as Austria, Estonia, Latvia, Georgia, Iceland and even Denmark, especially if it gets a decent draw. Not expecting anything from the Balkans (Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria, Moldova).

I don't think he was expecting to win FEstival da Cançao. lol However I do think people are underestimating the power of "silence" and "black and white" in the middle of 30 songs giving beats all around and explosions of color everywhere.

Ok, this wasn’t my favorite entry for Portugal, but... Deban, I do like me some gray or black and white (not all of us live in technicolor). Do NOT assume everybody is exactly like you or have the same tastes. It is a SONG contest, not a flair, not a scenery, not a dancing, not a special effects contest!!!! More: if I want REAL acrobatics in a voice, I’d rather listen to Mozart’s Queen of the Night aria, or anything by Donizetti or Bellini, or even Ella Fitzgerald or a yodelling singer. What’s wrong with a simple melody (oh, by the way, try to sing the rest of this song besides the "love is on my side" part)? I stopped viewing stuff like Got talent or The voice because now the original melodies just aren’t enough... You have to embellish it so much it becomes unrecognizable! You can’t even discern the pure quality of a voice, its tone, its intonation, its timbre because you do so much "acrobatics" that you can’t really evaluate anything properly... Surprisingly, I really liked it on first listen and put it quite high on my ranking. That will probably change but as a first impression it was pleasant. Realistically, pleasant isn't good enough to get anyone in the final, but I'm glad we got this song

Unique and different more than any other song in the competition very soulful..my favorite along with the song from Greece which has a 80,s style a trend done by many artists now in The USA and Britain.
The chorus is catchy in a jazz-y way, people always focus on the monotony of the songs being sent from Portugal but I have my doubts that it’s a sure non-qualifier, we may be surprised. Also there’s this sense that after Conan they just aren’t gonna risk something ethnic and upbeat because it flopped so hard and was misunderstood. It’s like you said, the average viewer doesn’t focus on meaning or lyrics, it’s all about immediacy at Eurovision.
Tbh Conan did poorly because the Eurovision live performance really missed the mark - everything from the lighting, choreography, costumes was better at the National Final. The Eurovision week package just wasn't as strong. I actually disagree about Eurovision being about 'immediacy' - we've had plenty of ballads, soulful, jazzy/blues-y music do tremendously well on the Eurovision stage. What this entry needs is *dynamics* - I love the melody and the energy of the song, but a good entry builds a story - the song needs to build otherwise after 3 minutes, the singer has been doing the same chorus 5 times the exact way with no change. The song could benefit from ending quieter, with the instrumental slowly fading away, or the singer breaking down and really connecting with the camera at the end.

This song has an impressive quality that goes from the beautiful instrumental to the singer's phenomenal voice. I don't know about televoting, but Portugal will do very well with the national juries.

Hi from Portugal! I wanted Neev to win Festival da Canção but I'm not ashamed of this entry. It's not competitive and as much as I want Portugal to do well, it doesn't really matter now so whatever happens we are prepared. We failed so many times 🤷♂️. Thank you for the coverage.

One thing is for sure, it’s not the tipical bimbo BOP song that some fans and Eastern Europeans love or the overstaged and repetitive year after year Swedish pop. But that’s Eurovision, a empty , poor taste acrobatics and dance show. Music? There is one or two songs, the rest is comedy. I’m not a big fan of the Portuguese song, but compare this to the tipical Greek or Cyprus entries (for exemple). Except Greece in 2011, that was nice. 🙂
You can have a good classic sounding song that makes you feel something, look at Salvador Sobral or Duncan Laurence (this being more modern but still nothing close to what you describe). Also, there needs to be music to fill of types of emotions and feelings, so there's nothing wrong or inferior with upbeat modern music.

I'm struggling to understand your evaluation: Clearly, it is not your choice and that's ok. But then I see a lot of bad will: "It's back and white!" yeah it is supposed to be a timeless ballad with a lot of old elements! So, it makes sense. Unless you'd want to add some "Cirque du Soleil stunts" as its usual in ESC. This guy has an amazing voice and is quite known here, I mean professionally, not "everybody can sing that" That's plain BS and quite rude. Is it not that ESC has some high standards: Someone making chicken noises has won it! Is it slow? Yeah, I agree, but then again it's is supposed to be. Lacks some action and fireworks, definitely. Tbh Conan did poorly because the Eurovision live performance really missed the mark - everything from the lighting, choreography, costumes was better at the National Final. The Eurovision week package just wasn't as strong. I actually disagree about Eurovision being about 'immediacy' - we've had plenty of ballads, soulful, jazzy/blues-y music do tremendously well on the Eurovision stage. What this entry needs is *dynamics* - I love the melody and the energy of the song, but a good entry builds a story - the song needs to build otherwise after 3 minutes, the singer has been doing the same chorus 5 times the exact way with no change. The song could benefit from ending quieter, with the instrumental slowly fading away, or the singer breaking down and really connecting with the camera at the end.

I also find Wiwibloggs often try too hard to find the good elements of certain entries (whether because they like or know the artists, whether they're in a good mood etc), but they and, certainly "all fans", are not prejudiced against Portugal; why would they be anyway?

I was disappointed Neev or Karetus didn't win. One thing is for sure, it’s not the tipical bimbo BOP song that some fans and Eastern Europeans love or the overstaged and repetitive year after year Swedish pop. But that’s Eurovision, a empty , poor taste acrobatics and dance show. Music? There is one or two songs, the rest is comedy.
I’m not a big fan of the Portuguese song, but compare this to the tipical Greek or Cyprus entries (for exemple). Except Greece in 2011, that was nice. 🙂
You can have a good classic sounding song that makes you feel something, look at Salvador Sobral or Duncan Laurence (this being more modern but still nothing close to what you describe). Also, there needs to be music to fill of types of emotions and feelings, so there's nothing wrong or inferior with upbeat modern music.

I'm struggling to understand your evaluation: Clearly, it is not your choice and that's ok. But then I see a lot of bad will: "It's back and white!" yeah it is supposed to be a timeless ballad with a lot of old elements! So, it makes sense. Unless you'd want to add some "Cirque du Soleil stunts" as its usual in ESC. This guy has an amazing voice and is quite known here, I mean professionally, not "everybody can sing that" That's plain BS and quite rude. Is it not that ESC has some high standards: Someone making chicken noises has won it!
Is it slow? Yeah, I agree, but then again it's is supposed to be. Lacks some action and fireworks, definitely. Perhaps that's the underdog that makes it to the final. Anyway, rude...yeah
I was unaware that of the back story. It's not happy. Even the mood seems off. Perhaps it's time we start looking at bad things happening to good people. Go Portugal, again discussing not so shallow issues. It worked well last time.
