  • It's time for another 31 on 31, where we rank 31 movies, on the 31st of the month. By "we" I mean my good self, Cody Leach, Sean Chandler, Wiliscredia and GenEXreviews. The 31 movies we have chosen are all comedy movies, made by directors who made their name in that genre, even if then moved on to other things since.

Respect for not finding humor in potshots at marriage, or the sanctity of sex being reduced to an act between two people. And as a Catholic who likes to look for the silver lining in everything, it’s refreshing to see at least a few prominent people on social media not being afraid to say it!

Of this awesome list of comedies, here are my Top 10 Favorites:
    10. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby-A terrific racecar comedy that mixes together a great ensemble cast with satire of American excess, which makes for a fantastic comedy from Will Ferrell
    9. Happy Gilmore-Even though Adam Sandler gets dunked on for his comedies of the last fifteen years, this one never fails in delivering a great time in Sandler’s manchild antics through the sport of golf
    8. Step Brothers-While I find this movie to be incredibly funny from beginning to end, I’ve always appreciated this one for its silly humor reinforcing the message of no matter how old you get, never lose your inner child, which I think is something this one doesn’t get enough credit for
    7. National Lampoon’s Vacation-A consistently funny road trip comedy that balances the family friendly comedy of the hijinks of what’s going on while being able to have more edgy, adult comedy at the same time
    6. Tropic Thunder-Even though this one’s a bit more extreme than a lot of the films on this list, none of that stops this movie from being a brilliant satire of the eccentricities and ruthlessness of Hollywood with self-aware humor, action shenanigans, and my favorite cameo of all time in the Les Grossman character
    5. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles-No matter how many Thanksgivings go by, I’ll always hold this road trip film near and dear to my heart for its ability to be incredibly funny in its comedy, but also be very sentimental in ways I don’t think we see as often in storytelling of today
    4. In Bruges-As a big fan of all four of Martin McDonagh’s films, this is my favorite of them as it’s able to blend together sharp McDonagh dialogue, profound themes of religion and morality, dark humor, and fantastic performances from Colin Farrell, Brenden Gleeson, and Ralph Fiennes, which makes for an incredibly holistic experience of a film
    3. Dumb and Dumber-An absolutely perfect mix of incredibly stupid humor written and delivered in the most clever of ways with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels’ chemistry elevating this film to be one of the funniest movies ever made
    2. Spaceballs-Because of my love of Star Wars and science fiction, I’ve always loved and adored this movie for its jabs at various franchises in Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien, Planet of the Apes, Transformers, and 2001: A Space Odyssey, which makes for the comedy I’ve probably rewatched the most times
    1. Groundhog Day-An absolutely hilarious time loop comedy that has Bill Murray at his funniest, plenty of memorable moments and lines, a script that’s both cynical and sentimental at the same time, and an efficient runtime, which makes for one of my Top 10 Favorite Movies of All Time

There's alot of comedies left off the lift that would or may rank higher for many people. Even the fellas doing the 31on31. But alas creating the list is a democracy and comedy being as subjective as it is, definitely won't have many people's favorites on here.
They're also trying to be as broad as possible.

I'm glad you liked Step Brothers, that's actually my favorite comedy of all time. It makes me laugh harder than any other film. I also think there's quite a story there too...
The 2 sons have all this youthfulness about them but no responsibilities or machority... the parents are all responsible and machor but have lost there youthfulness and love of life.... and by the end the kids come to learn the importance of and significance of responsibility and machority and the parents find their youthfulness again. I also think it shows the value of actually working things out as a family, forgiving each other and coming together to make it work. I just love that movie so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

What I’m saying is I feel like the rest (outside of CP) all fall pretty close together. Bryan is consistently pushing the boundaries of presenting a different opinion though I disagree with him more than I do (love Hellraiser/Texas chainsaw/fire fly family franchises all the way so I know we aren’t each other cup of tea but love his perspective which leads me to a lot I wouldn’t think I’d like).

Ferris Bueller too low, Bryan...I dont think youve ever played hookie from school lol. Agreed on Spaceballs, its corny. Young Frankenstein , PT&A, Coming to America, Ferris Bueller and In Bruges would be my top 5

    • @BryanLomax
      @BryanLomax  Місяць тому

I played hookie twice at school. One time I went to see Twelve Monkeys. The other I went to see The Game. But yeah, just never liked Ferris Bueller. All the stuff with the headmaster takes up way too much of the film's running time.

I must be juvenile, because in my 40’s I find myself still laughing at all of the movies that you are calling juvenile. But I love comedy and it sounds like you do not. It sounds like this was actually a painful assignment for you to get through.

Haven't seen Road Trip in a while. Not sure if my opinions would change. The video tape has probably aged poorly. Preferred the sequel Euro Trip, funnier them getting these ridiculous situations in Europe. Would've included it instead. Better watch of characters in European countries than Hostel.
Find Will Farrell's comedy hit/miss. Sometimes it's funny and others he's a complete loudmouth, over the top and cringey

I don't hate any of these
31: young Frankenstein: I didn't hate this movie it has funny moments but I don't really go back to it at all and this is a spoof I don't get as much
30: road trip: I had never seen this movie before I watched through all of these and it kind of felt like a bunch of other road trip comedies that I have seen and enjoy more
29: airplane: same as young Frankenstein pretty funny at times but not one that I go back to
28: theres something about mary: I do really enjoy this one but I don't rewatch it that often and I do think cameron Diaz was miscast for what they were going for with her character
27: weird science: I don't hate any john hughes movies but this one I feel like hasn't aged as well as I would have liked unlike his other movies
26: old school: pretty funny and Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn are great but I don't remember it or rewatch it as much as my favorite Todd Phillips comedies
25: Zoolander: great concept for a comedy and ben stiller is really funny in this but some of the humor doesn't land and is just cringe worthy for me
24: the worlds end: still a solid Edgar wright film with a good message but I don't think it balances the 2 plots as well as the other 2
Point of reference I really like to love the rest of these
23: knocked up: a funny movie with good performances and its heartfelt but I can't help but compare it to 40 year old virgin
22: funny people: I do really enjoy this one but I haven't gone back to it before very recently and not all of the humor lands for me
21: vacation: very consistently funny but national lampoon hadn't quite come into themselves yet
20: anchorman some very quotable memorable moments and a really good performance from Paul Rudd
19: hot fuzz: takes a bit to get going but when it does it's very funny and a great murder mystery
18: kingpin: very funny as most of these are but the plot can be a bit unfocused at times
17: the cable guy: a really good dark comedy but I haven't gone back to it more than 3 times in my life
16: spaceballs: a fun spoof movie that hits for me as a huge star wars fan
15: the 40 year old virgin: a funny movie with great characters with great chemistry and heart
14: the hangover: a fun road trip comedy that turned a bunch of actors into a listers
13: in bruges: a great dark comedy with great performances and some crazy action
12: coming to America: a fun comedy that is memorable and has a really good story rewatching this made me like coming 2 America less
11: tropic thunder: has some very good performances and has a lot to say about filmmaking
10: shaun of the dead: a really good British comedy with some great gore effects
9: multiplicity: a great concept with great acting and plenty of heart by the end
8: blazing saddles: a movie that I hadn't seen before but it does spoof comedy right and it will be rewatchable for me
7: step brothers: very quotable memorable and well acted with a great message
    5
6: groundhog day: a great concept that has my second favorite bill Murray performance and it has a ton of heart by the end
5: happy Gilmore: my personal favorite Adam Sandler comedy that is funny heartfelt with great performances and some of my most commonly used quotes
4: planes train and automobiles: a classic funny heartfelt quotable comedy that is kind of a template for what comedies would get back too
3: dumb and dumber: an unashamedly dumb comedy that is just trying to make you laugh and it works very well
2: Talladega nights: a great quotable funny sports movie that has great acting and a good message
1: ferris buellers day off: a classic nostalgic movie for me that is heartfelt amazingly acted and it's a story that most people can relate to
