You could always weigh your catch cup and subtract that from the weight of the combined catch cup plus tarantula weight.
Most if not all kitchen scales also have a tare option so it automatically subtracts the weight. But this is more entertaining!
True…but this always works
Would that be schrodinger's tarantula?!?! 😁
That was my first thought, too, but he wanted to measure them as well so the catch cup would have to come off anyway🤷♀️ Great idea if you just wanted to weigh them, though!
What fun would that be, and where’s the challenge then?? 😁
There's something I always find amazing about you and your videos: You don't always "plan" the content of the video... you just share an idea and let us be a part of it. Will it work? Will it fail? No matter, the idea was great! ^^ And that's really cool! That's also why your videos always feel so genuine and honest... and I am really grateful for that.
Keep up the great work, all the best to you and greetings from Germany!
By the way... last time I saved a "home spider" (Eratigena atrica) from being sucked into my vacuum cleaner. I took her and put her in my terrarium and now she's sharing a home with my centipedes (Spirobolus caudulanus). And I have to feed her flies, of course, but she seems to be fine... she already molted three times.
Bye ^^
One of the coolest ideas petko ever had… 19:24 ‘geez Louise papa cheese’
Man I love hearing that accent every time
I love the fact you can see all the bite marks in your poking straw.
😳
I was looking at the exact same thing XD
Very interesting as always. And a treat to see Elvira, Bonita and Linda out in the open! Thanks Petko!
Bonita lives for the drammmmaaaaaaaa!!! Just falls right over 💀
You should start a friendly competition with the other UA-cam tarantula keepers. See whose got the chunkiest arachnid on UA-cam
sounds fun but you can actually over feed some an have issues, gotta be careful.
Concerning the mushrooms, sure in nature there's mold and mushrooms and it's all part of it. Yet you see that Bonita's leg was rotten I suggest trying to get rid of the mushrooms, maybe some spores got on the leg joint during the molt and it started to grow before the tarantula hardened infecting the leg with the mold. Just a theory based on the evidence
You could zero the scales with the catch cup or a container on the scales, then weigh the subjects in the catch cup or container, no risk of darting.
Right its just maths
But that would not be exciting.
Tssk look at you and your sensible solutions. bah i say.
Dude, you can tare that scale with the container, so when you place the container with the tarantulas on, it won't count the container weight xDDD
I've been following your channel for YEARS but I still have to chuckle that your T.stermi is called "Linda" .... I dont know why I fi d it so funny, but I do lol 😆
*Petko gets bored*
Petko: "let's make a video of weighing extremely dangerous tarantulas for fun..."
I wish you had a finer scale like 1.00g
19:48 - mycosis, lubricate the stump with "Triderm" cream (once a week), or better yet, remove it altogether!
*looks at kitchen scale*
…no…
*looks at tarantula enclosures*
…or maybe?
*looks at c. lividus threatposing her waterdish*
…nevermind
#true story 😂😂😂
I love Linda so so so much!
Big chonky queen!
You and our majesty Linda are the reason I have a T stirmi now too 🥰
She recently molted and is a femaleeee! Her name is Xena like the warrior princess, because she’s a feisty bolty thing!
Springtails will knock those mushrooms out in no time
15:09 HOLY CRAPOLLA I played this over like 15+ times WOW WOW WOW Petko I know my heart jumped, even though it wasn't a clear camera angle I could still see her jump enough!!! You have very calm reactions to what could be intense or serious situations. Me I would have flown back and fell out the chair onto the ground!! So happy she didn't getcha...
I think I can guess the Friday's bonus content will be Petko chasing the harpactira pulchripes around the den before taking the body length measurement 🤣🤣🤣
Loving the video, great and entertaining content as usual 😘
Petko, Thank you for Another Wonderful Video.
That Enclosure, That will have a Waterfall, is just Amazing.
You're very Talented!!!!
If Linda were to reach the 175g record, about 3x her current mass, some math says she would be about 1.45x her current length. So, imagine a 10.8cm body length! That's assuming she keeps the same proportions.
Another brilliant video Petko. Great to see Bonita and Linda out and about. And of course it's all in the name of science! 😉
“So it will be like we are doing this for science, and not just because I wanted to do this for no particular reason”
Relatable, Petko. That’s a mood right there.
That big ass spider jumped from your hand to the other without hurting itself that's soo sickk...like in the 8 leg freak movie
Thank you for another fascinating video Petko! I've been watching for years and still enjoy this channel as much as ever. I kinda miss the couch but how fabulous that The Dark Den has grown so much! Your soothing and calming voice is also greatly appreciated. I'll be hanging on for the next video as usual.
Petko it wouldn't matter if your videos are over an hour long they are always easy to watch because you are an enjoyable youtuber to watch but I'm not going to complain about bonus Friday video 😁😁
It says "for science" in the title so Gramm is the correct measuring unit! 😁
PS. the imperial system is crazy! Especially if you consider, that Americans are historically not very fond of the british empire, yet they still refuse to switch to the metric system 😂
drug dealing confirmed as science
Great video dude, loved the “Pick of Destiny” reference 🤘🏿
Wow 36grams- no wonder she’s not scared of anything lol - Dark Den looks amazing
Fat shaming tarantulas?
... for science...
I love how the trusty poking straw has clear signs of multiple uses
My Geniculata was 57g and 8 cm body lenght before she dropped an egg sac. And I had a huge problem with finding a male that was able to lift her up 😄
Add different color rocks for the water fall and maybe some snails or fossils. And if you take the weight with the trantula in the cup you can minus the weight of the cup and get the weight of the trantula. :)
I thought about subtracting the weight of the cup afterwards too... but then I thought "where is the fun in that" 😆
your spiders are offended that you are so concerned with their weight
You should get a food scale that goes into 0.00 in grams instead of just a whole number
I could never do this with my own t's. Great to see someone do it though!
If i would do this video with my tarantulas it would be like „and now… irretating hairs everywhere“
With me it would be, so far I have tried to weigh 15 tarantulas and so far I have managed to loose 15 tarantulas but don't worry they are in the house somewhere 🤣🤣🤣 if anyone would be interested in purchasing my house it will be on the market shortly after this video and comes with some free pets 🤣🤣 but in all seriousness I would probably have the same as you and have hairs flying everywhere, my T. apophysis all I need to do is open her enclosure and you see the hairs flying out, she doesn't kick when annoyed just kicks all over her webbing that she has done
Hello great video information Petcko
Oh I loved this! 😍 always a treat seeing these guys! I felt inspired and weighted my baby obt and she was 5 grams lol
Really enjoyed this video great idea 👍
love this! for science !!!
This is definitely up there for the best Dark Den video! 🥇 Loved it!!
This is actually important for the tarantulas health, we wouldn't want them to be underweight now do we?
Fat shaming Tarantula's. I've now seen it all :)
The golden blue legged baboon tarantula was a beautiful T,there actually native to the province I live in
Kitchen scales can be out by one or two grams. To measure accurately when they weigh so little, you will need a medical scale. They are rather expensive but that is the price for accuracy.
you need a jewellery scale to get accurate readings
yes jewellery scale, i was just gonna recommend a more precise scale, but jewellery scale is a much more legal way of saying it hahaha
“A big booty means a hefty weight”, the story of my life 😂
Next time measure your capture cup so that way if you can’t get them out of the cup, you can still know what it weighs by subtracting the cup’s weight from the total weight
Good news (though with a grain of salt) According to a webpage (UA-cam deleted the link where I got the info), Bonita will regrow her missing leg during her next molt.
Yep! That’s why he wasn’t too concerned. They’re such incredible creatures
Maybe her leg went like that with the fungus growing? "I think they are harmless as nothing ever happened" , T with one less leg walks in as you say that lol
The holes in the straw lol!!!
Very cool video!
Vaga hahaha Petko care! 😀
Nice, Cool Video.
Thank you for also Providing Education.
You should give them a nice tasty treat for their cooperation.
3g or in american 1.63 bottle caps
I have the ****static****, waga.😂 My slavblood enjoyed that, google translate to the rescue
cool idea!
at 20:03 is there a yellow spot on the rotten leg that has the same color as the mushroom?
Yeah have seen it, too. i thought about a very tiny wound, not big enough to see it, but maybe it got infected?
Don't worry. Bonitas leg will grow back during the molt. Same thing happend with my GBB😜
Poor T. apophysis never gets any love 🤣🤣
I love your channel so much that you literally appeared in my dream last night hahaha.
I Absolutely Loved seeing their size and weight measured out and would love to see a Part 2 !!!❤❤🕷🕷❤❤
He sounds more like gru than gru does ☺️💕
Very interesting video, definitely enjoyed it.
G. pulchra simply is the most beautiful tarantula 😍
hey would love to see more videos of you exploring Croatia
this is so crazy, bc I was JUST thinking earlier today about how much some adult arboreal T's are! (debating on making my own decor w/ magnets involved, so id have to take into account T weight.) THANKS FOR POSTING!
Would love to know how much Zilla weighed. She was a beast.
My Gaint devil mantis I3 broke her leg in shipment, it fell off and since then it's been growing back each molt. It has grown back but not a full-length size leg, missing about 1cm maybe. It is still not an adult so it might grow back to its entire length. Maybe it might be the same with tarantulas?
Great video
Just for reference kittens are born at 50 to 60 grames!
the scales with have a switch to change to freedom-weights
Smoking a fatty and I noticed a new video is out lucky me 😃. Keep up the hard work petko you are the best tarantula UA-camr out there by far. 💯
Also smoking a fatty watching this 👀
The catch cup is 19 grams
LOLOLOL. "English word not found." I wish I spoke more than one.❤
Probably better for her not to have that dead leg for the next molt. Interested to see her progress.
Oooo this is an interesting topic! Yes I want to know how much an adult poecilotheria regalis weighs!!
I love my P.ornata its around 3.5 4 inches and ferocious eater and super gorgeous
How do ya think they know that they are siblings ? and Do they ever try to mate ?
I love that you weren't worried about him bothering the females bc he may hurt them but bc they would probably eat him😂😂😂😂
Good video. I enjoyed that.
Holy crap are those fang marks in the straw?!? Beautiful animals but definitely intimidating to me...
Linda is HUGE!!!
Their weight was amazing. Thanks for this video.
I think i would be super fiesty&spicy if someone was poking me with a gnarled up straw
If you ever see a tarantula with a really big booty it always has the way at least 30 million pounds lol
Edit: just joking around
I never knew I needed to know how much a tarantula weighs until now!
How is Felix doing 🦎
Hey Petko, you mentioned that Tarantulas in the wild have a more variable diet than those in captivity? That has me quite confused because I would think that you have the ability to feed Linda anything you choose to feed her. A Goliath in the wild would be limited to what they have access to, and of the items that are accessible they only have access to what they are actually able to catch? By that logic, you could technically give your Goliath a diet that rotates through each and every item they could ever get access to in their natural environment if you chose to do so, and were willing to seek out and purchase those food items. I’m not saying you should or would do that, and it would be insanely expensive to do that I’m sure, but it is possible, right? For that reason I just feel as though a captive born Goliath has the potential to grow the largest (at least in theory anyhow)? 🤔😳🐍🤷♂️
You actually make some very interesting points, I own about 160 tarantulas and have 3 different types of feeders that I breed, the problem I have personally found is no so much the cost of buying lots of different types of prey but the space required to keep them as its better to try and build sustainable colonies because can't always guarantee the pet shop will have any feeders in. To give you and example I have red runner roaches and dubia roaches, both colonies are in 100 litre boxes, my crickets are in an 80 litre box so with just them 3 boxes alone takes up quite a bit of space, plus with red runners they require heat for the eggs to hatch which things like heat pad can achieve but I personally had a problem with a heat pad and it almost catching on fire so now have my red runners on a table which sits over a radiator. To be honest I wouldn't think you would need to get every different thing they eat so long as you have a few different options and not just feeding the same thing over and over although some keepers do and never have any problems. The part of your comment that caught my attention the most though is the part about in captivity they could grow larger that their wild counter parts, I would have to agree with you on that as you pointed out in captivity you can fully control every aspect. I really enjoyed your comment as its something that I had never thought about but now makes me want to try and see if your theory would work. Sorry if my reply is really long.
@@ethanmccormack9561 if it works, please update us on a comment in the future. I’m super curious to know after Petko mentioned that food/diet is what can allow them to grow larger (to full potential) with the proper variation. 🤔
This video should have been sponsored by Peloton.
Lovely Linda 💕💕🕷🕷
She makes me want to get a tarantula ? Her and the Purple Man my favorite color?
It is the first species of tarantula to be described at all. The name avicularia comes from the Latin word avis - bird. The discoverer was inspired by an engraving from 1705, in which the painter Sibyl Merian immortalized a large spider devouring a chick of a bird.
Lasiodora parahyban: Occurrence: Brazil
Size: 10dc
Temperature: 24-27°C
Humidity: 50-60%
Venom Strength: Weak
Italian scalding: yes
Comments: One of the larger terrestrial tarantulas, slightly poisonous, rather peaceful.
Grammostola pulchra is a great tarantula to start your spider adventure!
Harpactira pulchripes (Pocock, 1901) is an exceptionally attractive tarantula, which with its appearance and character has gained considerable popularity among breeders and enthusiasts. Once a rarity, now it is an easily available species, the price of which is constantly falling, which is especially pleasing to beginner terrarists who want to try their hand at a slightly more aggressive and faster tarantula.
Poecilotheria metallica is not for everyone - it is a demanding tarantula, whose temperament can take its toll if we are inexperienced. It has a venom that is strong, so before breeding it, it is better to prepare properly and try it on other, easier to handle tarantula species such as Brachypelma albopilosum (Curlyhair tarantula), Brachypelma smithi (Mexican redknee tarantula) or Brachypelma vagans (Mexican red rump tarantula).
Acanthoscurria geniculata - white-kneed tarantula one of the most popular spiders in farms. It occurs naturally in Brazil. It is a terrestrial species, gentle although it adopts a defensive posture, suitable for starting the adventure with breeding tarantulas.
Dark den time!!!!!!
Petko don't you think a paint brush is better than a straw, being that a jab from a straw could be kinda rough............no disrespect, I've used lots of things over the years but paint brush has felt safest to me so far. Great vid dude.
Damn those big gals move fast too!
Loved this vid getting so up close and personal with the Ts. I have an Elvira as well, my P cambridgei, and she is psycho! Lol
I enjoyed learning how much they weigh and seeing Linda lol that’s a big girl
Seem a little manic ,hope everything all well ? petko ,but u should weight pre then post molt ,
That be cool
I was hoping Lind 👍
In polish also waga :)
