  • We review the 2021 Porsche Macan GTS, the enthusiast trim level. We discuss the compromises introduced to make a crossover a "sports car" and vice versa. This is still a Porsche that carries a higher price tag and increased expectations. With other vehicles like the BMW X3, X5, Alfa Stelvio, Jaguar F-Pace, Audi Q5, and, Genesis GV70 it's a hard choice.

Buying a Macan S in December of 2014 as my first Porsche product was a huge financial mistake. My experience with it caused me to buy multiple Porsche sports cars of which I currently own 5. Still have the Macan.

Piano black only became popular when it was decided silver plastic was tacky. That had replaced leather-grained black plastic, which replaced fake wood. Manufacturers need to put something on those plastic surfaces, and they really can't afford to put brushed metal or real wood veneer everywhere. So far, piano black is seen by most buyers as classy, though it really is a dust magnet, even in places it doesn't attract fingerprints.

As an engineer who has worked on the Macan's development in Weissach I only can tell that this car is awesome and no SQ5 is even near the performance levels of it.
Small story: The development of the hood (incl. the openings for the headlights) was a pain in the ass regarding tolerances & rubbing off the headlight sealing during long term closure test (and still was issue in production as I was told by a friend). The air intake section was redesigned (some of the combs needed to be "closed" and nearly caused big problems with intake temperatures in hot countries) due to failed Thatcham break in test.
These guys are really creative when it comes to breaking inside a vehicle. They did it in the Macan by going through the grill with a pre-bent steel wire, going upwards through the center intake (the mesh you see @6:20) to the hood latch release mechanism.

    "Why this car exist?"
Well, for me and me only, the Macan GTS represents everything I would want in a car (or CUV). It sits higher than a Cayman/911, so I don't have to worry about potholes, speed bumps, steep driveways, etc. It is sporty enough (especially with air suspension lowered and PASM on its stiffest setting) that I can take on a backroad and have a lot of fun. It is also comfortable enough so I can do a 10 hour road trip and not be extremely fatigued (did a three hour road trip in my old GT4 and by the time I was done, I was ready to sell the car).
It does everything I need it to do and I can have fun in it. It's a good looking Porsche vehicle that drives and handles very well. Steering is amazing and although it's not 100% like a 911, it's still very "Porsche" like. Not to mention it has "usable" backseats and a large enough trunk to carry groceries and suitcases.

I get my basic SUV needs met and still have a daily driver that I absolutely enjoy getting into every time I drive as I always have with the Cayman. Consolidating cars and still being 100% satsified with what I'm driving is something I think only the Macan fills for me. I'm trading in my two for the Macan GTS.

To answer your question about WHY someone would want a sporty SUV... it's for the person that wants something sporty, understands that the street isn't really a smart place for actual sports car performance (but wants to safely scratch the itch every once in awhile), but also needs a versatile and practical daily driver (that can also tow in this case). You don't need two cars to accomplish that, this is a jack of all trades car and I get everything I truly want (or need) in a single car. Another added benefit is cheaper insurance and only having to maintain a single car.

Probably 80% of my driving is done well within the limits of good taste, often with a beloved spouse, dogs and/or gear with me. Of the 20% when I am playing the hooligan, at least half is in a straight line. My Cayenne is utterly, utterly exciting and competent in those scenarios. It does not require me to fold myself into it like I do with a Miata, or Lotus, or GT3. (Wait until you are in your 60s. You will get my point.) If I were to get a Griswold family truckster for daily driving and an exquisite little sports toy for glory runs on nice weekends that would mean I was missing out on enjoying driving 80% of the time to have a relatively small increase in sportiness 20% of the time. Will I ever confuse my Cayenne for the sports cars I used to race? No. Will I be dang happy getting 80% of the feeling every single day I drive? Absolutely. Keep up the great work!

    I have a current 21 Macan GTS, with it replacing a 2017 Macan S.
This car is by far the best driving SUV in the market. Granted it isn't
as fast as a F97 X3M but it also don't ride like that stupidly harsh X3M
    with a boring ZF8 & noticeable turbo lag, I'm also a current F80 M3
ZCP owner. Porsche does a lot of things correctly aside from the hefty
price tag that always comes with them.
If you are able to afford these cars, they are absolutely worth it. BMW
has completely fallen off the horse when it comes to their performance
    cars.
And I also agree with Jack. It's way better to have physical buttons

weeks, you know exactly where each buttons are. Sadly that won't last

Adding to what the guys said in the video...
To non die-hard car enthusiasts: It is a lot of money, but it is a very well rounded car that you can daily and have fun whenever you want it to, and it comes from a very respectable and reliable brand.
To car enthusiasts: We know we can have a normal, cheap SUV/crossover and a more engaging sportscar, but even if you dont like it, think about it this way: This is the type of car (along the Cayenne) that lets Porsche develop the 911 and Cayman which is ultimately what we want to buy. You can hate SUVs all you want, but if the brand admits that this is what allows them to make and develop faster GT3s and GT2RSs, keep your criticism.
Awesome video as always, you just can't get enough of Mark and Jack!

Well filmed in the snow and great interaction by the hosts. The Macan is one of the best looking CUVs out there and it is so well made. They are build in Leipzig, Germany, where I had the chance to visit the factory, and they are each tested on a real track and an off road course on site once they come from the assembly line, where a lot of work is done by skilled workers and not everything is automated. There is more to this car than meets the eye at first glance.

I have a Macan GTS. I bought it new. At the time, it was our only car in Chicago (split btwn me and significant other). We arguably did not need 1 car and definitely didn't need 2. This was the closest thing I could find to a do-it-all car. The 911 is not a do-it-all car. In the event of a zombie apocalypse, 911 doesn't do much for you. Macan GTS can be of more use, unless of course the zombies have a thirst for Yuppie brains. That said, now we are more in need of 2 cars (on occasion), so I bought a 2019 Carrera T. Have kept the Macan bc what else do you replace it with? Maybe a pickup truck, but the Macan is fun to drive and when you live in a winter climate, you end up driving your Macan a lot more than your 911. There aren't many 4wd SUV/CUVs that have better driving mechanics (I haven't driven one to date, I would guess maybe a Urus for an additional 100k). TLDR: It's a yuppie city car to quickly get you away to your lakehouse, all doing it with style and fun. It is expensive, but sadly it seems reasonable when compared to other luxury SUV/CUVs. Macan S gets you 90% of the way there, though...if that fits your budget better.

After throwing piles of money into my E90 M3, I still have anxiety driving it, and I think I've reached my limit. It's sporty, precise, well built, comfortable, and can handle 4 seasons. It has everything except loads of interior and cargo space, but that's why the Cayenne exists.

I am now in the process of purchasing the Macan GTS and selling the sports car (2017 Lotus Evora for any interested parties). I have now driven the GTS and in my view it is more 911 than SUV. Porsche could not address the cause after many months and visits to the dealer. It’s a known issue on the forums but without resolution Porsche lost me to a Tesla. Exactly why we got one for my wife. She has a 2018 Turbo. She would love a 911. But, just take a look at all the roads this winter, or any winter. You cannot drive a sports car in NYC or surrounding areas in the winter without constantly being on the lookout for potholes.
With the Macan Turbo, it’s nearly as fast as most sports cars, but we don’t have to worry about the snow, the rain, or potholes. We see the snow and icy patches from further away. We have more time to assess how big the potholes are. Should we swerve or just hit it head on. Most of the times, swerving isn’t necessary. That makes it so much safer.
Almost every day, I hit a pothole or swerve around one that would’ve swallowed a sports car wheel.
And then there’s the practicality of it. It simply does everything. We take it on family road trips. Can’t do that in a 911. We take it food shopping. Can’t do that in a 911. We take it joy riding in the winter, through snow patches and potholes. Can’t and won’t do that in a 911.
And when we’re all done having fun, it’s just a supremely comfortable car.
I still think a 911 is in our future. But, we talk ourselves out of it every winter until they fix the potholes, which is about...May. Or never.

I remember (circa 1970) even being told the exact date our car would be made. Of course, back then, there were maybe a dozen options, but one of them was which engine you wanted. Nothing came close to the driving experience in the Macan GTS. Living in Toronto it would let me replicate 85% of the feeling of my GT4 throughout the winter - and that makes it worth the money to me. Honestly the GTS isn't fast compared to the other cars that I've driven but it's a convincing facsimile for a daily.

Love all the physical switches, too. Feels like you sit in an aircraft cabin. And you get instant access to everything.
Too bad this style will be entirely gone soon, I guess too many Americans are getting too stupid to operate that many switches. Plus, it cuts costs to switch to smudgy and scratchy-looking capacitive buttons on black piano trim.

I was going to say the same thing about the buttons and switches, it makes it feel like an aircraft cabin and imo it also looks cool. I strongly prefer it to the newer touchscreen controls they're implementing these days.
      I guess I'm a smart American though 🤦‍♂️

blame Porsche and Audi double touch screen nonsense not the Americans. One of them "rest of the country is deplorable" folks eh

Capacitance buttons were more common 5+ years ago, with most manufacturers abandoning them since. There's nothing wrong with putting little-used controls in menus on the screen, but putting basic HVAC controls and things like seat heaters there is stupid. You can blame Tesla for some of that. I think they were anticipating true autonomous vehicles years before they became practical. If you aren't driving, messing with the screen is fine.

This car is for the person with a million dollar condo that has 1 parking spot or the person who always wanted a porsche, can finally afford it, but may need to pick up the kids from school or from their ex's when its their turn for custody. Its actually a surprisingly big market.

Sporty SUV's make total sense to me, and you touched on it earlier. I am never going to get everything I want out of a 718 etc., I don't really have much desire to go out onto a track or find a place to keep my "summer car". All I want to do is get me and my family around and have some smiles along the way when I take a corner or smash the pedal.

I just don’t get that feeling in a suv no matter what they do to make tall fat cars feel “sporty”, probably unpopular opinion considering the dominance of these suvs in the market

All of which could be done in a Panamera, which has a lower CofG and better aerodynamics/dynamics.

@@EvoraGT430 Don't get me wrong, I love the Pana, but if you want one car to do it all - it doesn't have great space or practicality as a family vehicle.

@@sunnohh Speaking honestly, I have only felt it in the Cayenne/Macan. Does it feel like a Miata? No, but feels very different from a M-Class/X5 etc.

It's for the people who may want a sports car but need the practicality of a cuv and who live in the city and have one parking space so we have to compromise. Looking for one of these now, probably a well-equipped S.
