MY TRANSMISSION DIED, IT DID NOT GO WELL (LIVING FULL TIME IN MY JEEP CHEROKEE XJ)

  • I was overlanding in Utah and I developed transmission problems. So I stopped at a place by Salt Lake City and have it checked out and they told me to put in a rebuilt transmission would be $7800. So I left that place. He was definitely an asshole. The transmitted really started to act up so I went to another place (Transmasters Transmissions in West Valley City in Utah) I really can’t tell if they really did a good job or not, but there were a lot of red flags, dealing with them. They absolutely lied to me and we’re very unprofessional. I would never go back there again

I sold everything i couldn't use 30ft lowboy gooseneck, the powerstoke, mud drag truck 750hp yes i have the Dyno sheet. Talked my uncle into selling his XJ . Been in the family 20y now. I freak All of my friends out 2500 mile trips multiple times a year. been All over southern Arizona up to Moab and back to DFW, a few times... You Jonh inspired me. Im only 44. It took me a while to get over who I'm not, and who i still can be. I thought of giving up, then it's only some one who cares about me that Will find me.. nope. Started living with what the Lord left ME. I love Life. Absolutely thankful for finding out Life isn't over. Hope to me you one day Sir

Wow, that’s some story. I’m so impressed. You inspire me. One thing I have learned is nobody gives a crap about you and a lot of the time that includes family. If you do find a friend on the road that is kindhearted and is truly a good friend, that is special and hard to find. the most important things I have learned is being alone and being very happy being alone. I have had a lot of bad things happen to me in my life so five years ago I sold everything I owned and just took off in my jeep. I started a new life and now I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. Stay strong my friend life is good.

I asked him a bunch of questions about my transmission, and I never really got a direct answer. What a bunch of assholes. About four years ago I put a jasper motor in and if this transmission last, I will be very happy. I love my jeep and this lifestyle. The Jeep gives me a lot of freedom to go places most people can’t go and to get into remote places to go fishing. A camper would be my nightmare.

Well John the AW4 is a good transmission. Some problems are fixable without removing or rebuilding. Shift solenoids common problem. Your transfer case would probably last a million miles without requiringa rebuild. But now hopefully you have new parts to keep you going a few more trips around the country. Happens to all of us, enjoy your adventures.

Good mechanic shop time $150/hour minimum.
Show up every day, different hour, see who is under the hood. Or where your parts are on the rebuild table.
Good mechanics will show you. Small shops can get extremely busy and not have call to update. Understand that some projects take more days than estimated due to parts availability, and parts delivery. Mechanic may not have recent experience with exactly your model, and therefore may not be as fast as a previous mechanic.

Hey Clark, I never complained about the price and I did say I thought that price was fair. When a mechanic says this is how long it will take to get repaired That’s what I go by. If there is problems and he’s honest with me, I would have no problems with that. On day four I called him up 8:30 in the morning and told me the jeeps on the lift and they’re putting the transmission in now.. when I got there at 10:30. My jeep was still in the parking lot. They had no plans to doing anything. When it comes to stuff like that, he’s just a lying piece of shit. And then on top of that, the mechanics lied about my check engine light. That just shows the type of place they are.

You need to learn some patience. And shopping around for the cheapest price, gets you the cheapest results. Then hassling them trying to speed it up, resulted in them, taking even more shortcuts to try to get you off their back. I get it you cant afford to sit in a hotel room. Next time maybe rent a van, probably way cheaper than a room. And you can move around still. Get all your stuff out of the Jeep you need and go camp out. Im just giving you advice. Yes, it is almost impossible to find a decent mechanic. I have worked on my own cars my whole life so I know when I talk to a mechanic if he’s giving me the shaft. Most of these mechanics, take advantage of people that have no mechanical abilities. We are in a sad state because we can’t trust any mechanics or politicians or doctors or law enforcement and so on and so on. Right now, I am camping on a small creek up here in Idaho all by myself with nobody around catching a ton of rainbow trout. This is where I can forget about what the world is becoming. Life is good out here.
