  • Learn the essential technique of tying a NAIL KNOT with a LOCK for connecting fly fishing backing to fly line. As we discovered in previous tests, nail knots tend to slip before breaking. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, given that the nail knot alone is strong enough, we can mitigate the slippage by tying a LOCK.
On this week's H2T, I will show you how to tie a nail knot with a lock and will put it to the test to gauge its breaking strength, ensuring its reliability in fishing situations. Whether you're a novice or an experienced angler, mastering this knot is vital for successful fly fishing outings.

Excellent demo! I didn’t know about this variation. Gonna try it tonight. I prefer the nail knot and its variations to the connecting loops for passage through the guides but also because I feel the loops create a hinge.

Thank you for this test as I was curious about the strength of this connection. In addition to going through the guides better, some people say that a nail knot casts, or turns over the leader, better than a loop-to-loop connection. Do you agree with this? Personally I don't notice the difference, but maybe my casting isn't good enough.
