  • In this video I pinch a log from our fire wood store and turn a natural edge bowl.. I don't think it turned out bad for firewood, there was even a bit of spalting

These are the ones I like best, just a random piece of old wood and a simple but not obvious shape, showing its unexpected beauty. The dark crack becomes a feature, not a flaw. The pencils and the resin are great fun but this is real woodwork. My grandfather was a joiner - very basic stuff mainly, like mending chairs and the desks from the local school - but he was also the village undertaker and made coffins. My sister and I spent a lot of time in his workshop, watching him at work, learning about different types of wood and the use of his tools. Looking back it was a bit weird with the odd half-finished coffin propped up in the corner, but fascinating and, for us, just normal.

Of course Andy has the power of pardoning a piece of firewood for Christmas! But with his extraordinary creative genius, he has made a Christmas present masterpiece, leaving it with an incredible burnt edge as a gentle reminder of what it could have been! Its gorgeous Andy! Merry Christmas to you and yours!!!

Hey not bad for firewood, I think burning the edge of the bowl was a nice touch. Also I'm happy to say that I was finally able to purchase a lathe for myself this year. I can't wait to take it for a spin and try out a few inspired projects thanks to you Andy.😄

How great is it to shop for your next project piece just outside your door. I love that.
Watching you I feel how Peacefully you work. This time you simply removing all that wasn’t the bowl. It’s just matter of fact.
I swear I could smell the fragrance of the fire meeting the wood. How fun!
Thank you Andy for sharing your Creative Expression with us as you shape nature piece by piece.

Hi Andy. I find it cool, when you have a "turn" where you get the illusion that you are carving out something invisible. It's a pretty piece. And for Christmas I offer Albert Finney as Scrooge:
I like life. Life likes me.
Life and I fairly fully agree.
Life is fine. Life is good,
'Specially mine, which is just as it should be.
I like pouring the wine, and why not?
    Life's a pleasure; that I deny not.

P.S. What do you do with all the shavings? I was thinking it might be interesting to try using a bunch in resin some time.

I really enjoyed woodshop back in Jr. High so long ago. More than once in the decades since then I've wished I had followed that path, but life had other ideas. Sadly, the teachers in that school at that time for the most part didn't give a damn about the students. There were exceptions (the one that comes most to mind was the English teacher, she'd go way out of her way to provide all the help you might need), but most of them just wanted to go home and get away from us kids.
Unfortunately, the woodshop teacher seemed lifeless and monotone, like he was reading from a script. He gave little to no encouragement, but if you screwed up, he'd rip you a new one. The whole class hated him, as I suspect all the other students that had a class with him did.
    Pity.
