I have had a problem with my sister's 2016 crv burning oil. She bought the car new and I've done her oil changes religiously and noticed around the 30-40k mark it started to burn oil. Now after an oil change and driving about 2k miles I needed to add a Q. We took it to 2 different Honda dealers to have consumption tests done and both times they've said that the consumption is within normal range and it's up to the owner to check the oil regularly and add oil when needed. If we went off the maintenance minder the car would be bone dry by the time it hits 0%. Just this week we had to have the valve cover gasket replaced because of an oil leak at the gasket and I'm going to be replacing the pcv valve this weekend. Hopefully that will make a difference but based on this video I'm not hopeful. Thank you for the content and letting me know that I'm not crazy.

Fkn do you know how many times I've locked the doors with the keys inside? Idk wtf is going on with Honda/Acura anymore. I love them. But for fucks sake. No oil warning or failsafe in place. Engine should shut off when it's 2 quarts or more low or go into limp mode to get you to put oil in it. Heck maybe even a oil level display inside. Mine has a oil life % display, but doesn't even warn when low on oil. I mean what is going on. 🤣😂

It depends whether you have a 4 cyl or a 6 cyl Variable cylinder management engine. I owned a 2004 Acura TSX 4 cylinder engine which was identical to Honda Accord 4 cyl. I changed the PCV valve and oil consumption was reduced substantially. The 6 cylinder burns oil for reasons other than the PCV valve. The main the reason is that when 3 cylinders are shut off, the intake and exhaust valves are closed but the piston still moves up and down. This creates suction which pulls oil up above the piston and fowls up the spark plugs and the excess oil is burned.

I really love Honda. I’ve had a 98 accord(1st car), 2003 accord, 2004 Saturn Vue (which was made with the Honda engines until 2007), 2008 & 2009 accord, and a 2013 Acura Tl (3.7).. they all burn/burned oil except the 98 accord and the Saturn. I can’t even buy a used Honda with a good engine. This is sad. I’ve bought them all straight out. No payments and I’m stuck looking stupid trying to stick with the brand I really love. They should fix all oil burning issues no matter how old it is as long as it’s not like 180,000 miles. I’m really thinking about switching to Lexus or Infiniti at this point. I should not have bought this many cars over the last 7 years . I should still have just the 1 which is supposed to have been reliable. The only reason I don’t have my 98 accord and my Saturn is because someone hit and run me in the accord and the Saturn subframe was rusted underneath. Honda if you’re listening, you guys are gonna lose a lot of customers.

I'm glad I found your video on an Acura blog. My story starts with a 2010 Acura TL sh awd 6-speed manual transmission. I did my research on these cars and heard there was a recall for oil consumption and this was a one owner car and I called to check on the recall and they said it was out of warranty. Because the car was such a rare car at the time with not a lot of mileage and being a one older car I ended up buying it because it was such a good price and that's when I noticed that it burns a huge amount of oil. I've been looking on UA-cam for a long time trying to figure out ways to do it without having to have major engine service done to it but because I'm going to keep the car since they don't make manual transmissions anymore I just religiously checked the oil now and it still Burns a lot of oil. Now that I've gone into comments and seen your video now I know it's not just me. I happen to love this car because I was searching for it for for such a long time and I also have a 2003 Acura CL 6 Speed and a 2011 Acura TL sh awd

Beside oil consumption, there is an engine rattle at cold start for 1 or 2 seconds ( VCT). There is so much pressure in the system that the valve cover gasket has leaked oil even on top of the cover. The lower tension piston rings are allowing blow by, diluting fuel which then vaporizes or burns oil off.

The underlying issue for certain year k24z engines is piston rings getting stuck or carboned up or worst case worn rings or even cylinder walls. My 3rd gen crv has excessive blow by I will do a wet and dry compression test to see if the rings are just not sealing correctly, minimal oil loss with castrol edge full synthetic though. I’ve been using marvel mystery oil in the oil and fuel. If you do a piston soak with mmo and berrymans b12 chemtool it can actually fix the rings if it’s from carboned rings. It can restore even zero compression in some cases

Try Mystery Marvel Oil. A lot of newer models are having issue with oil build up on the oil ring. I bought my 2011 MDX 3 years ago with 138,000 miles. Noticed shortly after it was using oil @ a rate of 1Qt per 1000 miles. Yikes! Discovered this was a common problem for this generation but made some attempts to solve the issue. Changed pcv valve, nothing, used seafoam in the crankcase and gas, nothing. So I gave up for awhile till I was adding a Qt every third fill up or 600 miles. Hitting the web again I ran across Marvel Mystery Oil. Sounds interesting but still sceptical since seafoam didn’t phase it any. But the more I read about it and many old school mechanics swore by it, won’t hurt to try it. I was down a Quart at 5he time so I put a quart in crankcase and 8 Oz in the tank on each fill. And ran it for the last 1000 miles of my oil change. After that one time incident I am now at 3000 miles per Qt. I will definitely be treating my oil again with Marvel Mystery Oil and see if we get to no adding between oil changes. I am totally amazed. This stuff works

The car has never been out of oil, but it was terribly close to it the first time I noticed the problem. There is no knocking, smoking, or dripps, so I dont know how the oil is just dissappearing from the crank case. It makes me terribly sad that Honda is dropping the ball this hard. They are supposed to be competitive with Toyota in terms of reliability, but this is nothing short of shameful. I cant believe they told you the rate of oil consumption was normal. WHAT A JOKE! I have a 2013 Honda ex-L with 158,360 miles on it. The problem is the VCM that cuts on and off, that’s the cause of the oil consumption and weird shifting and sounds. It also causes problems to the motor mounts. Mines was going through fast oil changes and weird shifting for a while but no leaks and oil is always at correct level. I did some research and found out the problem is THE VCM UNIT.
So I brought a S-VCM unit to cut it off, now my car runs smooth on all 6 cylinders constantly like it should. Gas mileage hasn’t changed much,
The VCM IS DAMAGING THE ENGINE BY CUTTING 6 CYLINDERS TO 4 ON AND OFF CONSTANTLY..

@@RBTheMechanic I had the same issue but may have found a fix to the 10th generation earth dreams engine problem. There are 3 things you will have to do in addition to the pcv valve change. These solutions are cheap. After my oil change, and performing the 3 steps, I have driven 1500 miles with no oil consumption. Took me a few months but after 1500 miles I have not added more oil and am at 90k miles. Before I add 3/4 of a quart every 1000 miles. I cannot guarantee if it will work for everyone but the steps I took literally gave a new life for the engine. For DIY's, it will cost at most $50 and would repeat the cycle every 30k miles. I am still monitoring but it has not given me issues at all.

    • @peachS2000
      @peachS2000 3 роки тому +1

@@RBTheMechanic This is what I did and it really worked. The 9th generation accord is fitted with Earth Dreams. Sounds fancy but not a great design in my opinion. The direct injection engine design is prone to carbon build up. You will notice RPM fluctuating at times when idle. After a fresh oil change, I replaced the PCV valve. I also cleaned the intake valves. 0w-20 engine oil is known to be a light synthetic oil and is used for improved mileage. On the downside, it is also known to consume quite a bit once the car hits 60k miles or more. It only gets worse. The 3rd item I do to prevent this is add a quart (make sure to not overfill with 0w-20) of pure synthetic oil stabilizer from Lucas Oil. Do all 3 things I explained above and you should notice a lot less oil consumption between oil changes or none at all. Cleaning intake valves will also give you 4-5 mpg increase on average. I have tried changing the PCV valve ONLY the first time I noticed excessive oil consumption. It slowed down the oil consumption but not by much. So far the above steps work and will continue to monitor. If buying the 10th generation accord, avoid the 1.5T engine at all cost. The 2.0 engine that is also on the Type R is a much more reliable engine and it is well made. It is essentially the same engine with a slightly different tuning to be able to use regular versus premium gas. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

The reason they burn oil is like other manufacturers (like my eyes 2013 Lexus) they tried a new type of oil ring on the pistons. This oil ring is a low pressure oil ring. Oil bypasses this, especially when it's 0w-20 grade oil. Then it burns oil like crazy ..
Toyota admitted this was their fault and offered a warranty on short engine repairs for the old-style higher pressure rings which fixed the issue.
Honda, however, clearly don't care and are relying on their brand name to get by

I just bought a 2007 Honda Pilot EX 4wd and it literally burned up 4 quarts of oil in a matter of a week. I'm in TN so used vehicles aren't covered under the Lemon Laws. What could be causing this? I've research and apparently the VCM system can cause it to do this but that's only in the 2wd's. The 4wd's don't have the VCM function I've also read that these motors have defective piston rings. If this is the problem how can I fix it?

I can say this I addedthe 4 quarts last night and the seafoam and I check it today and its already black so there's definitely some gunk in there. I then discovered that when I use Castrol edge high mileage or Amsoil XL oils my pilot doesn’t burn oil between changes and I’m doing it every 5k miles it’s weird!

I was about 1/2 a quart low. When I went to add the oil I was amazed how thin it was it poured like water.
