  • Genesis Apologetics is at is again, and it's up to me, your friendly neighborhood gibbon, to bust them for being both super wrong and incredibly ignorant! This go around we are systematically covering their "Debunking the Seven Myths about the Bible, Genesis, and Noah's Flood (full movie)" over the course of 8 episodes.
    I have not watched this video in advance so this is all fresh reaction content, right out of the outrage oven.
    Please Join me in the first of these episodes, the Generic Intro, where we begin our journey together.

    "Be good apes. Be great apes." That's a t-shirt waiting to happen. 🤣🤣🤣
    I come to these videos as an ex-minister who was raised in a educationally sheltered home and who went on to major in NT Greek and theology at a conservative evangelical Bible college. I missed so much of this growing up, and, quite frankly, I find it very reassuring to me now that it is not just the egregious misinterpretations (or selective , convenient transliterations) that initially made me severely question what has been taught and accepted as truth from on high. There is more evidence for better questions to be asked and honest "We don't know" answers where they should be.

    The idea that accepting evolution weakens your "walk with God" is illogical. The one has nothing to do with the other. But if you're trying actively to turn young people away from Christianity, claiming that either the Bible is literal or Christianity is invalid is how you'd do it. When I was a kid being raised on this nonsense, I was told repeatedly that the scientific community was doing this because they didn't like the idea that they were sinful and wanted to disprove God so they could disprove their own need for a savior, and that was why they were promoting this theory of evolution. No. Young Earth Creationists have decided they must disprove science because they are afraid their religion has nothing to offer people if 100% of it is not factually literal. If the Old and New Testaments together are factually correct, then Christianity has something no other religion has--literal truth on their side. If any part of it is metaphorical (as many parts of it are), then they have to think of some other reason people should choose their religion over the others. Any kind of second glance at this stuff reveals how very fragile Young Earth Creationists feel their own faith really is, if it can be toppled so easily by National Geographic.

    GA, and other creationists seem to forget that the books of the Bible deemed "history" are Joshua, Judges, Kings, and Chroncles, and although they match some verified historical events in places, are not the most... reliable of documents.

    Someone has probably explained this already in the comments here but I want to do it, too.😉
    Genesis is important to Christians (of which I am NOT one) because in the garden of eden story, Adam and Eve commit the first sin by eating the forbidden fruit. This is labeled "Original Sin". This is the sin that has doomed mankind and had to be absolved by Jesus's death. All the other stuff in the OT is there to show how mighty God is and how you should fear him. And it also shows how important God's need for sacrifice is to absolve sin. Among the books of the OT are sprinkled events and phrases that Christians claim predict Jesus's sacrifice, though they tend to cherry-pick in the extreme to get these to work as prophesy IMO.
    In a nut shell, that is my summation of why all the seemingly superfluous OT books are necessary to support Christian theology.

    • @Ugly_German_Truths
      @Ugly_German_Truths 4 роки тому +4

      That myth is at best a very basic misunderstanding, like the old "spinach is the best source of iron in your nutrition" (the measurement was done in dehydrated (freezedried) spinach... but we eat that stuff hydrated so it's at least 10 time lower, making it only average in iron content) as that an EKG or MRI will only show activity in parts of your brain and it rarely goes over 15, 20 %, so with less advanced instruments an average of 10% might be imaginable as result of a serious study... BUT the parts that are active when we walk are different from the bits we use when we talk or wash our hands or take a dump... so over a normal day we use more or less all out non memory related neurons at least once, killing the myth thoroughly.

    Genesis Apologetics are right about the importance of Genesis in one respect, and that is without the Original Sin of eating from the Tree Of The Knowledge Of Good And Evil, leading to the Fall Of Man, being kicked out of the Garden Of Eden, there would be no reason for Jesus to have died on the cross as a sacrifice to be raised from dead three days later, which is the cornerstone for (orthodox) Christian belief.

    • @Tornadopelt
      @Tornadopelt 3 роки тому +2

      What's worse:
      That Original Sin is stated to have allowed evil to enter the world. But the fact that it was called the Original Sin means evil was *already in the world* to begin with, and if the creationist wants to argue that there *was* no evil before the Original Sin, then why the hell was it called the Tree Of The Knowledge of Good AND Evil?
      The YECs can't have it both ways - either way, Evil has to be there from the very start.

    A lot of the Bible references historical events, but in the way a teenager can explain historical events of three hundred years ago on a different continent. The names used have been warped over the centuries, due to the need to understand the current events of the oral histories they are based on, as well as all of the translations. The greatest problem with understanding the history in the Bible tends to be due to not knowing who actually wrote many of the books. The book of James, as written by Anonymous. The book of Matthew, as written by Anonymous. In the end, we are left a history that reads more like, "the Crusades, as recounted by a 20th century American." So I would disagree that the history in the Bible is much more accurate than the biology found within it :(

      A Hebrew writing to Hebrews in Greek? Instead of Hebrew something they would have been raised writing and reading in temple. The oldest copies we have are Greek, but considering the supposed author and audience it was probably written in Hebrew.

      I'm going off of what I remember from looking into this kind of thing when I was going to teach the bible (5-ish years ago). So I may be totally off base. Also, Aramaic was more likely the language, at least, spoken.
      I did a quick search online to see. Paul 2 was probably written in more formal Greek than Paul 1. Which is part of why it's thought to not be written by the same author (and I am possibly wrong). Wiki has a page on "Aramaic new testament" that is an interesting read.
      There seems to be fuzziness on if the Gospels were written in Greek, Aramaic or maybe the result of Aramaic speakers writing in Greek or Koine Greek. I don't think the language written is going to change much in someones religious life anyhow.
      knowing the exact language of letters written in a period of time is hard.

      @@punkrockllama The New Testament authors were Aramaic speakers but they wrote in Greek as a matter of prestige--much the same way English is used in India. The Aramaic NT is a translation of the Greek originals into Aramaic. I can't say I've ever looked at the wikipedia page on the subject, just a few books and articles. I am anxious to learn more of these documents you speak of: Paul 1 and Paul 2. Despite a lifetime of studying Patristics and the NT I confess I have never heard of them.

    "No one is saying there was no Jesus"
    Actually, a whole lot of people argue and believe this. I think there probably was a guy named Jesus who probably said a lot of the stuff the new testament reflects, but that's as far as I go. My brother, on the other hand, makes a very decent case that Jesus is entirely fictional.
    Honestly, I'm mostly willing to concede that Jesus existed because it doesn't really matter to me as an agnostic, so whatever, guy named Jesus, okay. Makes no difference to me because, regardless of his actual existence, the new testament has good advice for how to conduct your life ethically with regard to how we treat other people. It's an incredibly novel set of ethical ideas for western monotheistic religion that many modern christian fundamentalists don't seem to get at all. Not proven to be completely accurate, not totally consistent, but all around a good book.
    In any case, I just wanted to clarify that lots of people do believe that there was no guy named Jesus, and while I don't find that idea useful, they are well within reason to suggest it.
