      My guess is that the color change is bluing. Bluing is a change in the oxidation state of the steel's surface. Bluing can be done with just heat, chemically at room temperature, or with both heat and chemicals. When done with just heat, there is a spectrum of colors that steel will go through that directly coorelate with the steel's temperature. This color change is used in tempering because it is such a good visual indication of the steel's temperature. Grey blue is about 310C or 590F and greenish blue is about 343C or 650F. The color in the video appears to me to be between those two. Oxygen might be prevented from getting to the steel if that fitting had an oil film or some other protective coating. I don't know if the brake clean contributed chemically at all to the bluing, or if it just removed the oil film allowing oxygen to get to the steel and the bluing to occur. Finally, this particular fitting is for the oil supply to the turbo, therefore it won't get as hot as the exhaust housing of the turbo because it has a constant supply of oil that is not as hot as the exhaust. With that said, this fitting will still get very hot next to the exhaust housing and will definitely not be at room temperature.

    I’ll take easily preventable thermal damage for $1000, Alex. When metal changes color like that, you’ve affected its tempering, it’s now either softer or more brittle than it was before, and it’s irreversible, especially to people who don’t know what the pretty colors are telling you. So you should probably do a dyno pull with your wiener right next to it.

    • @mikenone5902
      @mikenone5902 Рік тому

      It's not technically irreversible. He could anneal the piece and re-temper it. It is practically irreversible in the sense that he probably has no idea how to do that or the neccessary equipment. First step would be figuring out exactly what metal it is made out of. Steel would be my guess. Then anneal it. Then he'd have to figure out what the exact makeup of the steel alloy is to use the correct process to temper it as good as it was before he sprayed cleaner on it. If it is actually 1,000°F as he claims and has hot oil in it then presumably the quench only affected a very thin layer on the outside of the piece. It will probably wipe off with a rag. Most likely the hot oil would prevent the metal from fracturing. I suppose 1,000°F keeps the grain structure normalised since it's near annealing temperature and it cools slowly so it should be resistant to cracking.

    That's why you let the car idle after driving and let Temps normalize

      In fact it's probably almost as harmful as just truning it off. Oil pressure decreases a lot when idling that's why you should cool your car down by driving and not idling

    Pretty sure the warning label shows “flammable”. I’d go out to the garage and check but why bother.

    And this is why the chlorinated stuff isn’t sold anymore😂 (edit. I know they still sell it, it’s just not as common as it once was. I can’t even find it where I live. Have to order it.)
