Mine lasted for 300 hours before needing a rebuild. Tolerated overheating and overheated oil, worst that happened was camshaft wear, bearing wear, and some pitting in the cylinders. Not even 500$ in the machine shop, new cam, new bearings, new pistons, and it's back as good as new.
When you ran the 3rd 0-60 run, I instantly thought of the end of Bad Boys, when Marcus beat the Cobra in Mike's Porsche..... "Now THATS how you supposed to drive! From now on, THATS how you drive!" 😂 Treat it like a Fox body, for all intents and purposes thats what it is.
5 seconds for the time period these were manufactured is wicked quick. It's insane to think that the 2.0T Accords aren't much slower than that V8 Miata. Cars are just fast now. A midsize econo-box is doing what some supercars were doing 40 years ago. We've gotten so spoiled
This video brings back memories of my 1990 Monster Miata, which had a slightly warmed over 5.0 motor and transmission out of a 1990 Mustang. Just after I purchased the Miata I took it to the drag races to see what she could do in the quarter. On my first run when I shifted into third I broke the drive shaft's rear 'U' joint and that ended my night at the drag strip. Luckily, it was the rear 'U' joint and the drive shaft dropped onto the track. If it had been the front 'U' joint it could have dropped down into the track and dug in. Even though the car broke half way down the track I was still able to cover the quarter in just over 15 seconds.
NICE! cool to see a 302, i feel like all v8 swaps i see are LS. are you planning on doing a video on how the swap was done, or any deep dives into the internals? a swap like that looks like a blast!
Search Monster Miata, they have been offering these since the early 90's. I believe they didn't offer swap kits, but sold complete swapped cars. This is most likely one of those cars, but who knows! I'd also like to add, NICE VIDEO INTRO!
Thank you! Yes I’ll do a video on the full build, it’s pretty well documented even though it was done by a previous owner. It was done with a monster Miata swap kit. It sure is!
I was driving at a track event some years ago and saw someone had swapped some kind of LS into a Miata, but the guy had retired the car for the day. I asked him why and he said it was so powerful that it was completely uncontrollable on the track. Apparently it was just fine for the street, but on a real track it was worthless. He was still happy to be there though! To this day, it’s one of the most awesome swaps I’ve ever seen.
Idk if I’d just assume all LS/V8 swapped Miata’s are “useless on track” based on that guys experience…there’s so many factors and variables to having a decently set up race car. He likely just needed more grip/suspension and or less aggressive clutch/gearing. The Shelby cobra was nearly unbeatable in the 60’s..big V8 ina tiny roadster..that’s what I think of when I think of V8 Miata’s..especially 302’s 😃
@@Crabtronics I'm not really assuming anything, just relating an anecdote. I do agree that many other factors go into setting up a proper track car, and it was apparent by a quick glance that, besides the engine swap, it was pretty much stock apart from a few minor upgrades. I recall that the tires looked to be the standard size (but perhaps were performance tires). My driving instructor had an S2000 with a 100% stock engine and regularly beat much more capable cars around the track, proving to me that it was more about skill than equipment. It also depends on the track - a track with many/long straightaways is going to be better for high-HP cars whereas the twisty ones will favor the lighter, more nimble ones.

that is sooo cool. love how unassuming that miata is, if it wasnt for the sound, which isnt even too loud from the sound of it it would probably Suprise people! love that. very nice and subtle.
What's the rear-end gear ratio? I've got a v8 Miata with an LS6 and a 4.56 rear end in a Ford 8.8 diff with an LSD ... I think it could run in the 3's to 60 if I cold shift it fast enough!
My ride is a 1968 Barracuda fastback powered by a 512 stroker with CNC Trick Flow heads and a hydraulic roller cam all backed by an A833 4 speed manual. The Barracuda weighs about 3300 pounds. Hellcat power in a car 1200 pounds lighter. 💪
Can you do a video on how the geometry and weight distribution of the car is affected by the balance change from different engines? Maybe some G force tests and corner exit testing? We all know the V8 will be faster, but us Miata and S2k owners are more concerned with how it affects the weight distribution of the car in corners, considering that's why we bought these cars lol. Lap time wise, carrying speed through corners in these cars is much faster than having more power but suffering on corners, which is often the case with V8 swaps.
I'm replying to this video 11 months after it was posted. I've had an idea since the early to mid 90's of a first gen Miata with a 1987 Grand National turbo v6 and a 6 speed trans. I think it would have been an awesome creation! :)
