5 Things I HATE About My ND Mazda MX5 Miata

- The ND Mazda MX5 Miata is a great car, but it's NOT perfect. Here's 5 of my biggest complaints about the ND Miata.
1) Passenger Seat Bump
The ND has a very odd bump in the passenger footwell. Turns out, it does serve a purpose - it's where the catalytic converter sits, snugly tucked next to the transmission. This takes up a fairly considerable amount of room in the passenger's footwell.
2) Poor rearwards visibility
Rear visibility is lacking when the top is up, due to a small rear window and higher doors and trunk than older cars.
3) Wind and road noise
These are light weight cars that are minimalistic, which means lack of sound deadening and materials to isolate you from the road. Because of this, these cars are noisy at speed, and not the most luxurious.
4) Terrible cup holders
The ND Miata has cupholders that aren't very good to start, but on top of that, they're removable and can get lost or removed.
5) Lack of storage space for longer trips
The Miata is not a car designed for hauling large amounts of cargo, but it definitely requires you to plan what you're bringing on a trip, especially if you're with a passenger.
These are problems I've found after owning this ND Miata for about 1.5 months. I LOVE this car, in fact it's my favorite car, but it's not perfect, and has these issues and flaws. Of course, everything is a compromise, and in my opinion the ND Mazda Miata is still the BEST driving car, especially when you consider price. What are your thoughts?

My biggest complaint is that people that don't like two seat sports cars, buy them and then complain online that they are noisy, they don't have enough storage space and they have crappy cup holders. Just go buy a KIA Sorento and be done with it.

There’s still no reason for those shitty cupholders. Even if they only made just one good cupholder, they definitely could’ve made the room.

Yes the video is a total clickbait BULLSHIT (yes I also use clickbaity caps here). All of these "flaws" are shown in literally any review of the car :)

I hear all these tiny little complaints 😂😂😂 ya know we should be thanking Mazda for keeping this car real. Real manual with three pedals on the floor, hand brake instead of an electric one , analog gauges, instead of an I pad. Still real petrol instead of electric, still real original roadster platform. Others have come and gone but this one still remains. There simply is no competition in the price range. Again, thank you Mazda!!!

I just drove one. You gotta set the side mirrors pretty wide, but if you do, there's literally no blind spot, with tons of viewing cross over between the rear view mirror and the sides.
I just put those little blind spot stick on mirrors and bypass the head check altogether.

I’m curious what your thoughts on the 2008 special edition Miata are. It has the limited slip. Kind of a cool color combo. Only 750 made. Is this a possible future desirable Miata?
TL/DW: Guy doesn't describe any real flaws like mechanical issues or leaking roof, just lists some obvious facts about ND Miata you will find in any review.
Yes, it has large bump in passenger side.
Yes, it is noisy (RF is noticeably better).
Yes, everyone makes fun of cupholders.
Yes, it doesn't have any interior storage. Trunk is quite OK for its class, though.
RF has more wind buffeting and less headroom, as well as several other notable downsides. Not that simple.
Bro does your Miata have hail damage all over the hood? Looks as such, but that might have just been the reflection from your garage ceiling.

Is there a better sportscar / convertible that starts around $30,000 new? Or even twice the price that is better made with & as good reliability as the MX5 that is so much fun to drive? It is not perfect but please think about what is more close to perfect for the price in 2024. I have had a 2021 MX 5 Sport for over 3 years & have never had any problems yet. There is no perfect human or car. Just enjoy yourself & your MX 5 even with its 5 flaws.

Since i have the right hand drive version, the "passenger" compartment is were the driver's clutch leg goes and it has never been a problem. Passenger side of RHD has more room there as well

I'm at the "binge watching reviews" stage now, god I cannot wait for next year to get my hands behind the wheel of one of these. Currently have an absolute s-box of a Mazdaspeed6 that I poured over 10k into and got nothing but a cracked firewall to thank me for it. This car is everything that joke of a vehicle isnt, lightweight, RWD, reliable and quick in the corners. Cannot wait
The GT trim has thicker headliners than the Sport trim you are driving which helps with less road noise on soft tops.
I totally agree on the noise aspect. After driving it on the highway with the top up for more than 2 hours, by head and ears are completely done in, especially on a windy day. I would gladly take a 10-15kg penalty for more sound deadening, especially by the rear wheel arches, as road noise at 130km/h (80mph) is truly awful, even with better tires. I ended up throwing 3 blankets behind the seats, where the top goes, to dampen some of the noise (works surprisingly well)
Noise canceling headphones are your friend :)

My NC hard top, has a glove box and four cup holders……one on each door and two in the centre console, just behind the window switches. The noise is moot point being a convertible, and the trunk space is another moot point being a small car, sorry but the complaints on this car is not worth complaining about .
Is it quieter than older miatas tho?

Again, it’s a small sports car…..I bought the 3 piece luggage set for the trunk, fits all my clothes for 4 months in FL.

Obviously you bought the wrong car for you. It is a small sports car and you must've known not much storage and that it being a convertible it just might be noisy. I hope you learn to enjoy the MX 5 as much as I enjoy every minute of driving mine.
This is my 7th Miata, and I’ll keep buying them. They’re the best cars but there’s no denying their limitations

The driver side blind spot can be easily remedied with a blind spot mirror sold on Amazon for $5 or so.
Soundproofing wheel arches does improve things. Ever so slightly but noticeable.
When I owned mine the passenger bump in the footwell was very much a problem. All my passengers did complain about it 😂 and the location of the cupholders!

I don't get why Mazda didnt put a glove box. My NA and NB both have gloveboxes.
The passenger compartment has another flaw in that a big chunk of your leg room is taken up by either a 6" thick subwoofer box in the Club and GT, or in the Sport a giant piece of plastic in place of that box. Also, I got around the rear visibility issue in my ND by installing a backup camera. Not a tough job. Some of the flaws you mentioned are why I decided to go back to the NC.. I road trip in my car frequently and it's a lot more comfortable on a long trip, especially for my passenger.

The alarm in both mirrors will tell you if there is a car next to you. Noise? it's a convertible .

I like whole Miata stuff here, I've checked many videos here carefully, as I bought my NA recently. No offense, I have to laugh how Americans are fixed to cupholders :)
Normally Cashed out cars does some great videos… this is just clickbait. I drive an RF. Less visibility, less storage… are those an issue for me? Not even a little. Convertibles are noisy, and to keep the weight down, Mazda cut where they could, that explains the cheap plastic and comedic sunvisors. But that also means things like sound deadening had to be done differently as well. The hump in the floor has been an a thing since the days of the Camaro, who cares, it’s not that invasive. As for the cup holders, sure they’re not the best, I have a beer cozy that I put my travel mugs in and not once has it been an issue. As for storage… look at your daily driver and have a good honest look at yourself and allll the BS you travel with. I daily my MX5 RF and there is NOTHING in it that I don’t need. When I had a sedan I like most people had it piled up with just stuff that didn’t need to be there. Drive your cars people, enjoy them. While you’re doing this ask yourself do any of the so called flaws actually matter? They really don’t, if they still crop up, sell it and buy an SUV

The location of the sound system control knob on the console. Keep hitting it with my wrist. Very annoying.

I see so many of this generation Miata on the used car market. Some 2016 and 2017 Miatas already have 4 owners.
Mostly because they love it so much they upgrade to the new one.
People buy these miles and don't put miles on them. It's a toy for older owners like a corvette would be.

I owned 3 NA miatas. Loved them for the fun car they are. I am sure I would enjoy a ND also. The lack of storage I get. No normal glove box. Omg! Car noise😮😮😮😮 Come on! You are in a light weight sports car. Put a good exhaust on it to hear the motor. When you are on a twisty road you want to hear what the car and tires are doing.

I've owned 5 NAs as well, they're great cars overall. The blind spots suck on this, no way around it

I’m sorry but this is a ridiculous video. Was looking for criticisms on reliability, maintenance or upgrade limitations, left disappointed. Small sports car has little space, poor visibility and is loud and not isolated from the road? No shit, these are given within anyone who is interested in this market.
That video will be a separate one, you’d be surprised at how many people are in the market for one and don’t think about these. I’ve had several people actively looking drive one and change their mind
I never use cupholders. Such an overrated accessoire. Dont have them in my NA and dont miss them...

@@ricks_toysonly Americans like to have some water on them when they drive? So many times do I go for a nice long drive in my Miata on a hot summer day with the top down and with that much sun beating down on me I am very glad I have tons of water
I drink like a gallon of water a day, to me it’s definitely a necessity to have easily accessible and not rolling around at my feet
@@joeykeegan6909 be honest it's for them Starbucks cups and fast food cups! Have yet to come across a water bottle to fit them tiny cup holders. I wedge my water bottle behind the seat no problem
Nothing on this list bothers me. This guy wasn’t too bad, but some of these reviewers that come on here and nit pick everything to the masses are the reason that this is the last generation of the true miata. In 2025 we’re getting a 3,000lb (at least) automatic only, full electric car. The miata is dead because it wasn’t good enough for non old school sports car enthusiasts.

That’s why I will never own a ND. Mazda you lost any future purchase until you get more realistic with this design. I own a NC grand touring soft top. Maybe Mazda should consider the more mature customer who isn’t like a little boy wanting a street legal go cart. Get real we are the group with the funds to purchase your vehicles. Now that you want to enter the high end market get real and grow up some. I cannot believe that you cannot build a better car that appeals to more. Cup holders, noise and a trunk that’s not usable for more than a backpack really lol. Say what you will about the NC for me it’s a much better car and more practical.
I would just get rid of that car. Find a car that you like. The Toyota Corolla is a good car, Honda Civics are almost as good as Corollas. I would highly recommend either of those two for a non-sports-car type of person like you. Some people just don't appreciate the sports-car experience. Yes, sell it as quickly as you can. Take a loss, but buy something that is more geared to your personality. Your welcome.
This is my 7th Miata, I’m good on the corollas or civics. I’ll keep buying these, but they certainly have their limitations
