The hurdy gurdy is one of the most powerful and underrated instruments out there.
I heard a anecdote from a historian stating "The hurdy gurdy has upwards of 80 moving parts, it was the space shuttle of the middle age"
Jenkins Family
It’s not underrated, no where near underrated, it’s just not a known instrument and has a limited genre of musical areas, but due to new cinema of Scandinavian and Eastern Europeans that’s been viewed by wider international audiences nowadays, these instruments are now getting their recognition for the dramatic and emotional scores that give depth and somber expression within the Television/Movie industry...
Musicians are adapting their genres incorporating this instrument within their sounds... But definitely not underrated.
Well it’s probably cause it’s named the hurdy gurdy 😅
@@Incountry I've seen people play rock songs on it, I've seen people (using software of course) make electronic music with it. Theres no limit really, it just depends on how its used.

www.altarwind.com/symphonie.html This box shaped model is patterned after the early medieval hurdy gurdies that were popular from 1,000 a.d. - 1,300 a.d. It has a quieter more subtle voice, which lends nicely to medieval music or vocal accompaniment. We revamped the old medieval design with modern enhancements (metal tangents, drone capos, and more), and turned it into the most complete hurdy gurdy package at it's price point.
A lot of people don’t know this but the Hurdy Gurdy is technically not a musical instrument, but an arthropod related to the horseshoe crab.

That feeling when you show a Hurdy Gurdy video to one of your D&D players, and they immediately want to make a bard with a Hurdy Gurdy. Good stuff.
I mean yeah. I saw this video and immediately thought to myself, "You know, this would make a great basis for a Bard/Artificer character. A Bardificer, if you will."
Guess what my first bard is plays. I'm building the character right now
I’m playing a bard right now who plays the hurdy gurdy!

I once saw a spindly man carrying a stone larger than his head upon his back. He stumbled beneath the weight, shirtless under the sun, wearing only a loincloth. He tottered down a busy thoroughfare. People made way for him. Not because they sympathized with him, but because they feared the momentum of his steps. You dare not impede one such as this. The monarch is like this man, stumbling along, the weight of a kingdom on his shoulders. Many give way before him, but so few are willing to step in and help carry the stone. They do not wish to attach themselves to the work, lest they condemn themselves to a life full of extra burdens. I left my carriage that day and took up the stone, lifting it for the man. I believe my guards were embarrassed. One can ignore a poor shirtless wretch doing such labor, but none ignore a king sharing the load. Perhaps we should switch places more often. If a king is seen to assume the burden of the poorest of men, perhaps there will be those who will help him with his own load, so invisible, yet so daunting.

@@megaleioaltura5362 It's a parable from The Way of Kings by Nohadon, the king of Alethela during the Heraldic Epochs.
The dark castle loomed in the distance with the cries of crows singing above the travelers. Dark clouds had overtaken the clear skies like an army did a village in a war as cold winds nipped at backs of all those who came into the land of the lone castle. The feeling of arcane forces were strong as they traveled closer, soft whispering sounding behind every footstep they took. "There looms the fortress of Creed, home of the dark wizard Alicreas" The old man said, pointing his staff at the building that layed ahead of the traveler's
"And with the rising of the morning sun, all things must come to an end. The pain and torment of those who did not survive the night is now a memory, a leaf in the wind that will not be seen more than once in their lifetime. I can still see her face in the beauty that is the rising sun, her warmth caressing me and holding me close to her breast. I shall never be alone."

I write this as the last glowing ember slowly dies. A harsh and cruel winter has fallen upon the land. What's crazy was when I was in Afghanistan years ago, when I was asleep I had a dream where anything and everything could go wrong on a foot patrol and a similar tune was playing. The human penchant for drone is interesting. It lives on today with electronic drone.
It sets the mood for an entire piece. It carries the melody on its shoulders. It fills the void between the notes.
I have zero musical literacy but that's what I feel drones are doing to songs.
@@MozzaBurger88 And so contrast that with classical music, which, once past the medieval era, seemed to be anti-drone. The "too many notes" criticism isn't just a funny line in _Amadeus_ when we finally hear Liszt crowding in as many strikes on as many keys as possible. This gives me the chills. I instantly thought of forgotten times where everything was forbidden and men sent out to fight wars and sometimes never made it back to their families. Battles so brutal you could be glad to have "only" a few broken bones or a missing limp. Primitive lifestyles. No order. No rules. God, medieval times were dark n depressing but also somehow amazing.
There were rules/order in the middle ages. They were vigorously enforced by the church and the landed nobility. For the average person, life was pretty regimented.
Battles were also pretty rare, and not actually that brutal for the most part. It's not like they were disorganized, chaotic melees where it was every man for himself.
Jude M A tremendous examination and explanation I tell my “comfortable” friends. I can love them and still shake my head at them. The explanation is definitely for weak chinned losers who sit around and get fat and break our genetic actions of being animals first. We need to keep our bodies and survival skills always up as we were not meant to sit down for hours and do nothing like all animals. Those who cower in fear and have never once even chopped wood. What good are they? They can not cook or clean or start a fire or adapt technology to their advantage if the world was falling apart. They would bitch about their phones not working and why there isn’t an Apple store open. Our comfortable living has destroyed natural selection and allowed weak minded people to keep breeding and made he strong rare. Humans work best when we go to a primitive survival state to see our capabilities at hand. I encourage a 3 to week long camping, primitive survival and almost not supplies in order to have the human mind use it’s brain and see what it knows, it can adapt and what it forgot.
Imagine if there were 100
Hurdy Gurties in the wood & on the hills😉
The fact that this beast sounds just like it did in the fricken medieval times is so mind blowing, cuz this is how people of that time period would have heard and played this instrument, I can only imagine seeing a group of medieval people gathered around someone paying this in a town square or a home or just out in the field 😍😨😱

As a child back in the early 80's I remember being mesmerised listening to a busker playing a hurdy gurdy in Brighton. It's still fascinating instrument to watch and listen to. Thanks for posting this.
This is a great instrument. Very emotional sound.
Absolutely beautiful. It made me feel like a warrior on my way home from sea after a bloody battle.
The Captain watched on in wide-eyed shock and terror as the separate stern and bow of the "Defiance" slowly drifted sorrowfully and pathetically beneath the waves across the debris field that was the ocean around them. Burning wreckage surrounded the "Honored Grace" as it stared down its foes, the massive "End of Dawn" guarded by the comparably diminutive "Endlessness". Their guns still smoking from the previous shells' launch. His stance faltered as a shake tore its way through his body, fear and hopelessness gripped him tightly in its frigid grasp. His jaw fell as his pulse quickened and he gulped shallowly. It was hopeless, a battle against the Twin Titans of Seven Seas. He shakily breathed a ragged gasp as his crew seemed to fall to their knees, smoke filling the cerulean sky above. He began to shake as his shoulders heaved up and down, while his lips twitched into a quiver, tears welling up in his eyes. Lips shaking, he realized the fight was already lost. He dropped to his knees and choked out a violent, heart-rending, and blood-curdling cry of loss, pain, and anguish. His tears fell relentlessly as he looked across the floating wreckage of the several ships that had fallen in the battle. Then came several flashes of light across the ships' decks, and a thunderous booming roar through the very air... As they fired their finishing salvo.
This is like violin, sello and bagpipe in the one and same instrument
Thank goodness there are people like you, still playing instruments like the Hurdy-Gurdy. There's no way anyone unfamiliar would even know how to hold that instrument! Thanks for sharing.
When I hear this instrument, it's as if my spirit drifts back in time a thousand years... then back to the present again. Beautifully played. ☺
In the beginning
Good always overpowered the evils
Of all man's sins...
But in time
The nations grew weak
And our cities fell to slums
While evil stood strong
In the dusts of hell
Lurked the blackest of hates
For he whom they feared
Awaited them...
Now many many life times later
Lay destroyed beaten beaten down
Only corpses of rebels
Ashes of dreams
And blood stained streets...
It has been written
"Those who have the youth
Have the future"
So come now children of the beast
Be strong
And shout at the devil
A wonderful art hopefully NEVER to be lost.

there's a few about, ua-cam.com/video/-x7sPlQe8yA/v-deo.html seems the better of the two convenient
I love the music and sounds Hurdy Gurdy makes due to it's depth in sound and mix of other certain instruments such as the violin and the guitar, the Hurdy Gurdy has more of a mono-tone mellowed guitar/ violin bass to it, making it one of the more dramatic instruments in music in which it gives it it's great sound quality. I personally like music that has that sort of emphasis much like chorus mixed with an orchestra that gives music it's old mellow, emotional, yet calming aspect to the sounds emitted from vocal and musical instruments and voices.
I listened to this song and now my cat has concurred half my town! All hail mittens, the true king!
