Three small tips for you, things I picked up in my 69years.
1/. Use a coffee filter to cove your large hole in pots. They are cheap, allow extra water to drain through and don't fall apart when wet. Also won't harm any roots that come in contact with them.
2/. Try using a cake icing knife not a butter knife, for freeing up plants that maybe stuck to a pot. They are not sharp so won't do much damage to any thick root they come in contact with. It is also very flexible so will conform to any curves the existing pot may have.
3/. When you have a plant in a plastic pot that has thicker roots coming out of the hole in the bottom. Cut the pot not the root.
Love the video, even if it took me two goes to watch it all.
Thank you!! These are fantastic tips. Appreciate you watching and commenting :)
@@wildfern great idea
I am SO GLAD you got that message about the Bunny Ear cactus...I was yelling at my computer while you were petting it!
lol! I’m so scared of it now 🫣
@@wildfernI literally just tossed mine out yesterday after I repotted it because I learned of what it could do to your eyeball 😅
A cactus I have is about 30 years old. The last couple of years life has been a Shit show and my poor little cactus got seriously ignored, the roots disintegrated and it fell out of its pot. This video inspired me to try and pot it back up. I actually stopped the video halfway to do it. So now I have to wait and see if it does anything.🤞🤷♀️
It will come back and all the best to you.
You can use your terracotta pots as cover pots so you still get the look while actually potting into plastic.
Not me thinking your new mug would make a cute pot 🌵
Yes I like that mug too
i thought it was a cute planter until she moved it and i saw the handle XD
I take this video as a sign to repot my cacti and succulents, which I've procastinated for quite some time 😂
yesss - perfect time of year for it 👏
Girl me too
Me three! I have a bunch of tiny cacti & succulents that are desperate for a repot because, like Fern, I am a chronic under-waterer.
Me 4!!!
It was my sign to water mine 😂
Me screaming at you not to touch the bunny ears!!!! It’s the absolute worst! I’m deathly scared of mine😅
Oh yea me too. Just going into the same room as the bunny ears and I get pricked. Yikes!
Elmer's Glue applied to Bunny Ears tiny thorns on fingers... allow to dry.. . Great way to remove these almost invisible stickers... very bad idea to touch these cacti..
Me too. Glochids are worst than spines 😖
I always look forward to your yearly cacti succulent repot. You have a beautiful collection. I lowkey flinched when you were touching your new opuntia. Their glochids are deceivingly innocent. Be careful touching your eyes. Your rat tail cactus is looking lovely after the repot.
I was literally out loud saying “No! Don’t touch it!”
🌵loved the Eve's Pin in that pretty gray planter. 💚
I love all your videos! But this was especially excellent! There is limited cactus/succulent material on UA-cam. And your videos are always so wonderful! I was really relieved to see the Monkey's Tail successfully repotted 🥰🌵
Thanks for putting the plant names on the screen as you talk about them!💞
Your Euphorbia lactea ‘White Ghost’ has normal roots. Euphorbia generally have very shallow root system. So do many cacti and succulents even very large and old ones. They tend to like spreading out rather than spreading down. You pull out some of the giant barrel cacti that weigh in the hundreds of pounds, and they’re barely a couple of inches deep.
Overall, you shouldn’t worry too much about roots being cramped and shallow. Many succulent species, especially desert cactus, can live literally between small rock crevices. They aren’t like the tropical plants you’re used to. For cacti, it’s often better to underpot, especially if you live somewhere temperate and humid.
The substrate falling into the pots… ASMR for us crazy plant people! 🌵
🌵 Love your videos! I’m a sucker for cacti and succulents. I’m so happy you enjoy them too!!
I love the annual cacti video!
Thank you 😃😃
I’m in the UK and grew cacti for over 20 years, I stopped watering end of September and gave them no water at all until the next April, they in my experience need as much light as you can possibly give them over that period also. Another tip is to use tomato fertiliser at half strength during their active growing period encourages them to flower
I love the fertilizer suggestion. L
" ... going in with the butter knife!" Planty people have to be resourceful. Great video, Fern ... thank you.
This is absolutely the most enjoyable video you’ve ever done, at least for me. We don’t see many cactus and succulent repots. I love these and have lots. I live in the southern Arizona desert so mine are outside all year long but still in pots.
I think I heard the stepelia crying, "my baby " 😂🤣😉 Please keep them side by side outside 😉
LOVE your repot videos, sooo relaxing!
this makes me so happy to hear - thank you!
the monkey tail is my favourite, looks so crazy but in a good way xD 🐵
yesss hahah totally!
Realized I wasn't breathing during the monkey tail repotting....😅 Glad he came free for you, such cool looking plant.
I don't like the idea of not giving them light at all during the winter. Cacti in their native habitat would still be outside. They just wouldn't get as much light. I'd recommend keeping them in the brightest windows you can during winter, but cutting way back on water when it starts getting cold (if not stopping completely, especially for that Mammillaria - they're particularly sensitive to being watered too frequently).
agree. light is needed but no water.
I also have to agree. I grew up in West Texas desert and they obviously get light but little water during winter months. As of February it's already in the 80s. Cacti need light all year round. It's something that should be really obvious.
@@jessicaliltxn3295 They don’t really need light when they’re dormant. Keeping them in complete darkness is a valid method of overwintering them without etiolation. I’ve seen it done with Trichocereus. Unpot them, wrap them in newspapers, and keep them in a cold basement throughout winter. Then slowly acclimate them to light when spring comes.
@morningstar8187 Etiolation occurs when its actively growing but gets less light. If it's dormant how would that happen? Different cacti have different requirements but they should receive some light in winter. People can do what they want but Mine always stay in the brightest window when the are indoors. Water and temperature are what I worry about most. My cacti are happy.
@morningstar8187 I would have NEVER known. 🤭 I've been around cacti my whole life indoors and outdoors. People can do as they please I just do things in a way that works for me and all my cacti. Js
I’m so happy you did this video, so little content on cactus
I think they are so different then tropicals, hope you do more soon
Look up @dessertplantsofavalon and @caffeinecactus there are tons of cacti content online. I use to have a lot of cacti, but grew away from it to aroid plants.
Love the red in the picture on the wall in the background, it's gorge against the green everywhere 💚❤️
I saw someone else on UA-cam (can't remember!) use folded newspaper to wrap round cacti instead of fabric. It worked really well for me! Just need loads of sheets and fold up into a thick rectangular shape and just wrap round 😊🌵
Paper towells work too
Hi Fern
Here is a tip. In Australia i purchased a roll of synthetic fly screen mesh and i cut into squares to cover the holes. Great drainage and it cost me about $8 at a local hardware store for the roll. I have used it in all the pots i have replanted and you can barely see i have used any. Much better drainage than coffee filters i believe. Love your cacti❤
the euphorbia will be totally fine! they root like crazy with adequate watering :) I loved this video, so comforting!
I had so many cactus die because I was always under the assumption they don’t need water but my goodness! Once you start watering them they really pop
Off! 😍
🌵Loved literally EVERYTHING about this!! Can’t wait to see how they do over the summer 🤩💚
Your anthuriums peeking out from behind the table remind me of dogs begging for food 😂
I always look forward to your cactus and succulent video 💚🌵Thanks for making it a long one!
Hahaha! Love that. Thanks for watching 🫶
1:26:08 hi Wildfern ❤ thank you 😊🌵🌵🌵🌵
Great video. The Stapelia's roommate does look like a Rhipsalis.
Your tongs are great, but try several pages of a newspaper, magazine , etc. to put around your cactus. You can wrap it around your cactus and actually hold it while repotting 😊
🌵 Literally held my breath while you repotted the monkey tail LOL
🌵🌵🌵🌵
As an Arizonian this made me excited and made me want to appreciate growing cactus more!
I'm so scared of cactus, so I'm vicariously living through your videos 😂 your rat tail cactus is so freaking cute
I think the plant with your starfish cactus is a Queen of the Night or orchid cactus, but I am not 100% sure. I love your shirt and the cactus mug. I ❤ your videos!!! Thanks Fern! 🌵
🌵🏜️🌵🏜️🌵🏜️🌵🏜️Lovely Video Fern!! Loooove that shirt and Mug! Loooove all your cactus babies. Lots of very fun and cool looking babes. I just enjoy watching you so much. You ate such a wonderful person, and your vibes are ❤️ Beautiful! Hope you're having an awesome day, and Happy Weekend
LIKED this before even starting because I just know 🌵 perfect timing as I repot my succulents 🥰
Love the cactus mug your monkey tail cactus and rats tails are just stunning 😍. 🌵🌵
This was so nice to watch while getting ready for work every morning this week! Love ur videos!🌵🌵🌵❤
I’m excited for this one.. my monkey tail died over the winter and I’m so sad.. Thanks for doing this video. I appreciate it ❤.. so I just ordered the variegated opuntia and when it’s big enough I am going to put it into my scorpion pot because it does just look like they are meant to be together.. and use a bit of packing tape to get the thorns/needles out of your fingers.. and I wear my rubber gloves 🌵👍🏻💚
awww so sorry to hear you lost your monkey tail :( and yessss such an amazing combo, they look great together 👏 thanks for watching as always x
🌵🌵🌵💚
I think cactus and succulent plants are my current favourites, I just had a cactus I have had for a year produce the prettiest pink blooms 🥰💖
Eve’s Pin in gray pot. Beautiful
I agree!! Thank you for watching ☺️
🌵Absolutely loved it! Can’t wait to watch them grow and look forward to next year’s repot!
Well done, handling these prickly cactuses!!!!! Love the mug!!! 🌵
34:47 I haven't watched the whole video so not sure what's to come, but my FIRST thought was this plant in the pot from variegated opuntia!
I always love this repot series 🌿💚
Cactus repots are full of “ow” and “ouch” for sure, thats how I am like. I think we both could use some cacti gloves for next year though 😅 🌵🌵
I loved this video so much Fern. Love watching you repot your plants. So relaxing. 🌵 🌵
My little sister fell into a very similar cactus to the bunny ear opuntia when we were kids. She had the worst skin irritation for weeks, it was awful. Definitely be careful with it, I’m literally feeling phantom spines/hairs on my hairs thinking about how much we hated that cactus lol. You won’t notice them getting stuck until you get the horrible fibreglass shredded skin feeling haha.
OMG!!! Been waiting for this 🤩🌵🤩🌵🤩
yayyyy 😁🌵
You can tell by the thickness of the bear paw. Yours is definitely under watered. Should be plump. Easy fix nonetheless, which is why I love succulents.
So excited to watch this video, been looking forward to it for so long!💖
I’ve seen other planty people use mesh or cheese cloth to help prevent soil falling out of large drainage holes. I love these long videos, Fern!
Love the T-shirt, the mug and all the cute plants🫶🏻 such a relaxing video for a slow Sunday🩷
The cactus mug lol
Coffee filters or pieces of paper towel work to keep the soil in the pot. You can also buy round pieces in two inch and four inch screening. Another thing you can do is buy a roll of screening and cut pieces out of it to cover the hole in the bottom of the pot.
🌵 perfect timing! I’m repotting my succulents and cactus this weekend ❤️ Thank you!
🌵 loved this!! Please make more longer videos if you can 👌🏻
I was holding my breath for the monkey tail, that was stressful 🤣🤣 good work girl. Good work x
I wish I’d watched this yesterday 😂 I literally just picked up two of the cutest twistiest ‘fluffiest’ cacti and was picking out spines for the longest time! Soooo many and soooo fine 😮😂
Perfect timing!! Excited to see how these grow in their new upgrades ☺️😍
You read my mind!! Video soon on my cactus and succulents. Today I bought the cactus/succulent fertilizer to mix in the draining soil. Wish me luck. Lol!! 🙋🏼♀️🌵 The round cactus is a Mammilaria. I also like to add Earthworm Castings in the soil…they love it.🌵🌵🌵
🌵Loved watching you repot.
🌵🌵Love your videos! Can’t wait to see updates on these bay-bays 😂
Love them! 🌵
Love watching these. 🌵🌵
I am putting off repotting so many plants because i can't decide which pots they would look the cutest in! 😂
My cactus live in a south facing window all year round and for years. the room is light and cool in the long dark winter, and bright and sunny and very warm during the short Swedish summer. They get flowers and seem to be okay. re-pot sometimes. Water them in the summer.
🌵I loved watching this video and got some of my own things accomplished while watching it!
the mug!!! perfect for the video 🌵💚💛
🌵🌵🌵 Repotting videos are my favorite Fern! Thanks for this and enjoyed it thoroughly! ❤
I 100% need to repot my succulent and cacti 😅
Definitely recommend using a “grater glove” for repots! It’s like chainmail for your hand for grating food
🌵 Thank you!
Enjoyed the repotting! Love cacti🌵 and succulents!🌵
Great job on getting them all repotted! 😍🌵
Had lots to do today so rewatched this 🥰 thanks for unintentionally body doubling! 🌵🌵
Aww thank you for re-watching!! 🥰
