- Time for an old classic!
Welcome to my fleet histories series. In it I review year-by-year aircraft fleets of an airline.
In this video I go through the history of Aer Lingus' Boeing 747 fleet from 1970 to 1995.
This series is inspired by Elmauriplatense. You can check out his channel here: / elmauriplatense

I do apologise, Aer Lingus' first 747 was called 'St. Colmcille' not 'St. Columcille'. :D
Who told you to shut Ibirdball up anyway?
What?
No not you ibirdball. Some guy in the replies told you to shut up.
I know, I was asking why they told me to shut up.
@Lachlan Tansey Shut up yourself your homeless! Hahahhahahahahhaahahhhahahhaha
The first landing of the B747 (EI-ASI) at Dublin Airport took place on Saturday morning March 6th, 1971. I remember it well. We lived between Runway 05/23 and 16/34, within 200 yards of the taxiway and the flight crew even flashed the nose wheel light at us as we ran along in the field beside the taxiway. A wonderful memory.
Here is a story about the Colmcille, and how casual access to these planes has changed over 50 years! I drove with my mother, father, brother, and a non-family car owner (we didn't have a car) to Shannon in the Autumn of 1974 to drop my mother off for her first flight to NYC (or to anywhere, for that matter) where she would catch a connecting flight to Hartford, CT, to be picked up later by my sister who was studying in the US at the time. My mother flew out on a Boeing 707, and I'm sure my father and driver friend repaired to the airport bar for a pint, so I was left to roam around the concourses, of which there were few at the time. In my family I was - and am - the only airplane buff, so I was delighted to see pulled up to a gate/skybridge a 747 (Colmcille perhaps, or was it Columba?). I had just arrived at the large plate glass window that looked out on the front of the jet when what was then called an air-hostess came along and asked me if I would like to see the inside of the plane, to which I immediately said yes, and being 13 years of age in less sophisticated times, she held my hand as we walked on to the plane. She brought me to the cockpit where I was able to sit in the co-pilot's seat for a few minutes, and then she told me to inspect the rest of the plane. I was forgotten about after that, apparently, because my efforts to get off were blocked by the return of the duty-free shoppers with their bags of perfumes, cigarettes and hooch, and out of nowhere - it seemed - an announcement was made that the plane would soon depart. For a brief instant I contemplated staying where I was and pleading ignorance once in the air, but the thought of my mother having to deal with me in NYC and her trip turned upside down got me to the front door once almost everyone was re-boarded. The air-hostess then remembered that I was onboard, and had a laugh with her co-workers over the potential snafu, and I walked myself off the plane and back to the concourse. When I finally found my brother who had been looking for me, he made it clear once I told him the story that he didn't believe a word of it. I moved to the US 9 years after that first encounter with a 747, and have flown back and forth many times in some of those jets. Take care.
Wonderful to see those big green birds in Tel Aviv airport after a six month stint in Lebanon, you could see the shamrock on the tail from a good distance away.
Glad to have flown on the Aer Lingus 747-100's many times.Such a nice roomy spacious aircraft.Memories.!.
A thing of absolute beauty
Fond memories of Aer Lingus. Flew in the 70s. Seeing the Shamrock on the tail in airports let me know that I was close to home. I liked the livery photo of 1979.
I was lucky enough to have flown a shamrock 747
Was it magically delicious?
@@lolaflores5388 yes it was found by leprechauns
I remember my first flying to Lourdes with 747 in 1988.. I never forget it.. where it sold to?
Beauty
Yep.
I understand they just started a regional Airline called Cunni Lingus
I love this livery
Love the original 60's scheme, not so much of a fan of the 70s-90s one. Looks too tacky and garish.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! Now how about Ryanair's Bac 1-11s?
they only had it since 1987 to 1993
Do you know were they ended up, nice video thanks.
These 747's did double duty per flight having to land in Shannon on the way in and on the way out.
do klm DC-3
SAS Md-80?
Irush Aer Lingus livery is my favirote but it's gone :v
I prefer the 1975-1995 one but both are awesome. I wish they went for a retro look for their new livery.
Shamrock is also good.
They should bring back the B747....and make it a -400 model or super max.....would look great in the current livery....with maybe Irish or Connacht rugby on it.....good advertising Ireland abroad, seeing as they now fly to Seattle, Miami, San Francisco, LAX among others
Their new long haul aircraft for the future is the A350 I'm afraid, the airline didn't even get the -200 or -400, let alone the -8.
Seen as they're owned now by IAG.....along with BA...…..they could pass an auld 747 over from LHR......sorry, I just love that plane. Can't remember the last time I saw one on this island.....although I know SNN gets quite a few due to emergencies, and a few cargo 747s too to boot....shame really. Last time I was on one was last Halloween, KLM, from ICN--->AMS......got an upgrade to business for 396 euro, I said to myself, for nearly 14 hours flight.....why not....felt so nostalgic like I was back in the 80/90s, the space you had....and then sleeping on the chair/bed.....sorry for waffling
I'm hoping to go on a KLM 747 before they retire, maybe fly AMS-HKG and then fly back to Brussels on an Air Belgium A340.
@@Ibirdball There already retired in 2020 cause of covid
History of Philippine Airlines A320 please. (Please correct me if you already did that.)
Sure :)
Ibirdball Thanks. :D
I like the background music. What is it?

I like the early Boeing 747's, vintage I guess one could say. Much more beautiful & looking back the older models looked better without & before winglets, even the engines look better. I don't like Aer Lingus new livery, less green than the Shamrock livery.
Are Lingus’ old livery was a thing of wonder!
Where did they normally fly to?
WillzWill Aer Lingus used its three 747s mostly on transatlantic routes, DUB-SNN-BOS or DUB-SNN-JFK. In later years they may have also used them to SFO. In winter, they often used them to take Irish holidaymakers to popular sun destinations such as the Canary Islands. (I remember flying those routes). The Shamrock livery was very distinctive and I will miss it! ☘️
Song 747 old
AerKLM
Ummmm
First!!
I was first :P
Commerican 2036
OOMMGG DAT LIVERY IZ DISCUSTING LOL
It does look odd, I love the classiness of their 1960s scheme.
I dont what video i should do ibirdball :(.. . .
legoridge city sorry i offended you but im one for newer liverys ;)
I wouldn't say it was ugly per say, more that I don't see the reason for the light blue. Green should've been more prominent.
Ur ugly
Less than useless video doesn't tell You nothing about the Aer Lingus 747 fleet history!
Aer Lingus sure had some of the most ass ugly livery’s to ever grace the beautiful lines of a 747.
Apropos that @apiece ofdirt wrote this ugly ass comment. I like the way he grouped "apiece" and "ofdirt" together to show people how smart he is.
