This BETTER NOT be the FUTURE of E-BIKES

- It is pretty normal for companies to try to dip their toe into the mountain bike community. It normally happens around trends in the industry centered around short term profits but the e-bike has turned it on another level. Today we are looking at the new prototype from Honda on their new e mountain bike.

Honda designed and built a gearbox driven down hill bike and won with it.
Their gearbox was the first mid mount gearbox on a mountain bike.
There were three generations of that gearbox.
No other company has ever won with a gearbox on a mountain bike and it is something other manufacturers are currently trying to do.
Single pivot a bad idea?
I guess you better tell that to all the current manufacturers that are designing and selling single high pivot bikes.
I'll have to look into that one. I hadn't heard of it. You learn something new every day...
@@Bike198 Gen 1 was basically a derailleur type system in a box. Later generations looked different. They were racing in downhill. Gen1 won the first world cup race it was entered into in 2004.
Gen 2 was CVT something different from Gen1, this was never raced, was a cool looking bike.
Gen 3 was similar to Gen 1.
I agree about seat posts but Honda always seem to be aiming towards downhill racing not enduro.
These bikes would make a great video topic.
Oh, just commented making your very same point. Honda were ahead of the game (tech-wise) before the MTB world was ready for them!
@@markmccall9027 Yeah it's a shame the sliding con-rod CVT style gearbox went nowhere. That was an ingenious way of giving infinite gearing an a relatively simple package. A shame they never raced with it.
I’ve had a permanent bruise on my shin from an Onza pedal, back in ‘95😂
Optimistic here. I kinda like the way it looks. I highly doubt the rear shock is simply mounted and likely has some kind of linkage. The panels look to be bolted on, like plastics on a dirtbike so some protection and very easy clean or replace. The grab hole is a nice touch. As the seat, well slammed it looks on point with bar similar to a moto. As a moto guy I get it, as I ride a EMTB with similar saddle height when dropped. Habbit. After imaging search of this at different angles, I 100% ride this.
One manufacturer id love see enter the EMTB market for powertrain anyway, is ZF. A motor gearbox combo from ZF paired with a Samsung battery on a cube, haibike, or bulls would be, incredible.
Single pivot designs are one of the oldest MTB suspension designs. It is just mounted like that.
You seem mad, and excited motorcycle manufacturers are getting in to "e bike design" I'm actually excited they are getting in to the mix, right now they give us much more bang for the buck than bicycle manufacturers do. And bicycle components just don't hold up to e bike use. We need some wild steps in this direction to get to where we need to be in the market, as a "prototype" none of us have ridden, we have no idea if it would work well or not, like brain storming all ideas are great at this point!
The perfect e bicycle will be a lightweight enduro bike, all R and D have been done 40 years ago, and face it, all bicycle brands are presenting solutions that we had used for years.
A little ill-informed. You are totally forgetting when Greg Minaar and Brendog, two of the world's greatest riders, rode a Honda downhill bike for a while. With an integrated gearbox fyi. Pretty much common knowledge for anyone with an interest in mountain biking. Honda have been developing mountain bikes, on and off, for a long time, and were way ahead of anyone with integrated gearbox tech.
Its just something for the showroom floor sorta thing cant see it being the future of ebikes if ebikes want to survive
But e-bikes are motorcycles and with the added weight the suspension dynamics are leaning closer to motorcycle design than that of bicycles. Looks better than most e-bikes that are funny chubby mountain bikes. This look fits what it is. An overpriced small motorcycle.
That is just an e-bike hate comment. There have been 50+ pound mountain bikes for a long time that had no pedal assist.

Not hating they have their place at the table. Disabilities, out of shape and want to keep up with friends, or the reason i would consider one: able to session a fun run more times than i could on my switchblade. But they are still overpriced small motorcycles. That is just a fact. Not in traditional bicycle category and not as good as a real motorcycle in the motorcycle category. They are a niche.
Right. Did you see pink bikes video regarding stack. They literally made a video describing modern mtb geometry, that, yes, mimic the geo you'd find on dirt bikes. The entire mtb industry is leaning on dirt bikes. EMTB's just reap the benefit of it more, like they do in every aspect.
Dirt bikes still don't have pedal input. As long as a class 1 e-bike does not have a throttle...it shouldn't mimic a dirt bike. Above class 1? Sure. The Honda does not have a throttle. It isn't about weight. It is about how the bike reacts to circular pedal input as the primary driver of the bike. Pedaling my Trek Rail with correct saddle height vs. slammed is drastically different (and also really bad for your knees).
Maybe there is other niches besides mtb they can design for....🤔
There shouldn't be a future for e-bikes. Put in the time and effort and learn how to really ride.
